Title: Heat treating/straightening juniper?
Post by: WhistlingBadger on March 11, 2022, 06:16:15 pm
Hi, all.  The juniper stave I've been working has developed a bit of prop twist as it dried.  I'm planning on recurving the tips, so I was wondering how to go about straightening it.  If it were whitewood, I'd just clamp it down as I heat treated it, but juniper isn't ordinarily heat treated.  I am going to steam the tips, but don't really have a way to steam a whole limb.  Ideas?

Wish I could help you wb. Only experience I have with juniper is using it in handles.

I really hope you get a shooter.

Such a pretty wood and I love her smell.

Juniper has done pretty good with dry heated recurves for me. I havent used it to twist, but I would expect it to be fine.

Ended up going with this guy's method.  Worked like a champ.  Curves perfectly aligned now and almost ready for sinew!

I watched a lot of him when I first started making selfbows. He made some pretty helpful videos. Usually pretty interesting to.

Yeah.  I think I'm getting a little obsessed with this bow, though.  I just found myself wishing we could skip our family's upcoming spring break road trip so I could stay home and start putting on sinew...

Yeah I’m pretty lucky my wife let’s me hang out with my hobbies as much as she does. Once in awhile though she gets a little jealous.

I’ve used this same method too and it worked well for me on a badly twisted yew bow build. Glad it worked out for ya.
