Title: Did I mess up this bow with these pin knots? advice
Post by: rcoen2 on May 16, 2022, 04:43:41 pm
Upon finishing up tillering and sealing/finishing my 4th bow I realized that two pin knots that I overlooked/mistreated may be problematic.  I was hoping for this bow to be a gift for a family member but I am now concerned about it's longevity.  So below are pictures of the two pin knots that are both located on opposite edges of one of the limbs, about 5.5" past the fades

The bow is about 64" semi D bow/stiff handled and, Oregon Ash, and ~27#s at 27"

Advice?

It almost looks like the knots are a growth ring higher than the rest. Do you know for sure that thoes knots are one ring deeper than the rest?

yeah I left extra material around the knot cluster on the first picture just to play it safe, but if you look closely you can see a one of the pin knots doesn't have extra material around it right on the edge with a small black crack running through.  The extra material/growth ring that I left kind of swirls around it.  And that's what Im concerned about.  the pin knot that doesn't have the extra material around it...

27lbs. at 27 inch draw is not a whole lot a strain on the limbs. I would take a shot at soaking  the knots with crazy glue, and back it with linen, or rawhide just to be safe.

Don't leave 'extra' wood around pin knots. That section on the back is asking to pop off and potentially raise a splinter when it does so.
the ring for the back should be continuous.
You should've left extra width on the limb edges. Next time be really careful to follow the grain - it would've flowed around these pins.

Cutting through a pin knot on the edge of any working wooden bow limb is not a good idea to do.Leaving a little swell of wood on the edge of self bows is what gives it some character.
As said before though with your lower poundage weight and length it might survive yet.

Oregon ash, and the knots are located about 5.5” past the fades on one of the limbs.  The two knots in question are on the very very edge of the limb directly opposite from each other
