Title: Pin Head Coral
Post by: bjrogg on March 12, 2025, 11:19:25 am
I received a very nice package in the mail from Bone Pile from the PITH. He sent a few spalls along with some very nice points.

I played around with a couple spalls that had some cortex on one side. Really colorful stuff on the other side. I had some trouble getting all the cortex and the white layer under it wasn’t quite as strong as the colorful stuff. I didn’t get quite as much as I hoped for but I think I an still get a couple small points from them

Then I picked a little nicer spall labeled pin head coral and tried to do it justice. Not as nice as bone pile’s but I think this one will hunt.

Thanks Roger. You certainly are a good knapper and a good guy.

You did good! Working coral is not like obsidian, it's a little hard getting used to hitting. That Pinhead is the best. The tan, pink point looks like coral that came from Pasco County, Florida.

You did a good job on the points . Pinhead can be tricky sometimes. Mullet nailed it, Pasco County coral.

Thanks Roger. I worked on another one of the spalls with the cortex on again.

Sure wish I could have gotten that hump off. The white stuff under the cortex works a little differently than the colored stuff lower

Any suggestions for getting that hump off?

Make what I call a,"booger picker". File a horse shoe nail down to a fine, flat point or a copper tip. then lay it against that hinge ledge, then hit it hard with indirect percussion. Try to knock the top off of it.

Thanks Eddie. I will have to try making a tool for that.
