For 2 years Alan has been trying to break the longest distance shot set by Harry Drake. Yesterday Alan finally accomplished this goal. He sent an arrow over a mile in distance. Thats a far distance considering a few years ago he was struggling to just get past one foot. ;) Alan, you just created a new challenge for someone else to spend a lifetime to chase, and you didnt make it easy for them. Congratulations on a job well done!

Congrats to Alan for an amazing accomplishment. Over a mile with an arrow seems insane.

Wow, that is amazing. Way to go, Alan!
-
nice shot!!. we look foreward to more details from the bonneville shoot.
Seems a bit early this year?
-
Truly amazing. Congrats Alan!
-
Almost unbelievable. Any info on equipment used to accompli such a feat?

Incredible feat, Alan. Congratulations.
I'm curious about his equipment also, bow, string, arrow, head, etc.

I think Alan is shooting a foot bow and last I heard he was making composite bamboo arrows
-
Carbon fiber arrows about 60 grains. Best I remember .yes he’s been chasing this record for years! He is quite the engineer and bowyer!!!
-
That is incredible.
Congratulations Alan. Pictures would be amazing.

WOW !!!

Anyone know what type / style of bow he used ?

I don't know exactly what he used this time, but previously Alan was using a composite recurve foot bow of his own design and manufacture that pulled 200+lb at whatever the draw length was. The arrows are solid carbon fibre rods less than 12" long that use razor blade stock for fletching. They look very much like big darts rather than a traditional arrow. Alan has said one of the biggest challenges is finding those small arrows after you have shot them over 5000ft away and I don't doubt that at all.
The technical achievement is simply staggering.

Wow ya that’s crazy far. Congrats Allen. Well done to achieve this.

here is an interesting article (https://www.opb.org/article/2024/11/16/beaverton-mechanical-engineer-archer-chases-record-longest-arrow-shot/) about his efforts

I don’t see it either.

That was an interesting read, Willie. Thanks.

By the way, he found an arrow from a past year that was further than his official record of about 1.18 miles? The lost arrow shot was almost 1.25 miles. Alan is the only person I have met who has a specific form of synesthesia where he can tap an arrow and listen to the tone it makes to tell if it is tuned properly for optimal flight with a specific weight bow. I’ve also seen him tap a bow to tell the draw weight by the tone it makes.
-
I guarantee he has shot further. He has broken the record likely for several years, just he was never able to find those arrows. Dedicating time to find them is the hard part.
I heard he can flick the bow string and tell you how far it will shoot. The man is a genius.
-
He impresses me all the time but tapping the string to tell how far it will go ? Well I’m going to have to hear that from him with a straight face. 🤠🤠🤠

I am slow getting in this thread. Thank you all so much even though the equipment was not all made with organic materials. It means a lot to me!

By my count, that takes nothing from the shining glory that surrounds your new record.
-
Well it’s official now. It will be interesting to see how long it takes for someone to brake this new record. I probably. Won’t live to see it.
-
Technologically, the record could be broken in a relatively short period of time because Allen has been fairly open about his journey. I doubt many will have the fortitude to endure lost arrows and broken equipment the way Allen has. It may never be broken. The sacrifice and dedication here are worthy of a movie! I would have Nickolas Cage play Allen.
-
Wow that is awesome, loved the story also. I get blown away hearing of people taking that kind of shot with a rifle, but with a bow just amazing. Congrats 😊😊Pappy

Yeah, I'd watch that. It seems unlikely, but hey, if they can make a movie about Eddie the Eagle, why the heck not?

Hello Arvin, You are close-ish! Hahaha! I weighed the arrow and it is 120 grains, so a bit on the heavy side.

The design is a relatively mild-ish static take-down recurve. Strung, the length is a little over 40” Nock-to-nock. Unstrung, the tips are reflexed about 1.5”. The bending area is concentrated over a relatively short 4”-5” portion of the bow limb and the outer limb is very stiff. The maximum draw length is about the equivalent of a 24” draw on a “normal” bow, and maximum draw weight close to 300 pounds, although I never quite got it to this point. I was slowly working my way up to full draw, but ran out of time while dealing with my own nerves, mechanical failures, and having to wait out a constant series of thunderstorms.

You mean to tell me that bow had more to give? We GOT to get you shooting earlier so you have all the time you need!

Sounds like when he eliminates the air gap between the gas pedal and floorboards we are gonna see another record!!!
