We have dozens of facebook pages dedicated to primitive bow making. I am going to start plugging PA on these pages. Maybe if we all do that we can start gaining members. I don't think it would take long. Some of the posts I see will have 100 or more comments so there is a lot of activity.
-
Steve, what is the SBMB? Is it the flight shooting organization?
-
Pat, that was a mistake, it should have read PA. SDMB is another non archery site that I visit. I fixed it.
-
if I-phones cannot access the site and the ads are still a problem for many, perhaps one might want to wait until things are fixed up better?
First impressions count.
-
They have lots of hits because they can reply without all the hoops you have to jump through on this site. Yes we would have all the dumb things said like when I first got on PA. 🤠🤠🤠oh ya I still say dumb stuff.🤠🤠

I’ve thought about that also as I have joined several Primitive archery type of Facebook pages. My concern is if you read through the posts there is a very high percentage of people “offering advice” that I’m betting have never even attempted to build a bow. A lot of false knowledge I would be concerned about. How do you separate the people that want to be serious from the so called experts?
Yeah, like the guy arguing with me that yew was denser than oak. LOL! (But ChatGPT said...)
-
Good points Arvin. I don't have to jump through any hoops on my computer and don't see many pop-ups. I wonder why it is a different experience for some of us? I haven't tried it on my phone yet, and I know most people use their phones. It sounds like we need something that could set us apart. Some of our old crew have gone silent, while others have gone professional. What about a weekly or monthly thread where different bowyers would be featured, they would introduce themselves and answer questions based on how they do things, or even talk about mistakes they had to learn from? whatever?

That might be the good part. As long as debate stays civil encourage it. Nobody has to pull punches just no hitting below the belt.

I use a Chromebook with the Chrome browser - I get no pop ups at all when I'm on PA.
Other computers running Windows 10 or 11 I get all kinds of pop ups.
-
I pay $35 a year for an ad blocker that blocks ALL pop-ups and advertisements on all of the sites I visit.
As much as I hate pop-ups, I feel this is money well spent. One time my blocker needed to be re-installed, I was without it for a couple of days, I couldn't believe how many pop-ups showed up, 5 or 6 every time I went from one page to another.
-
I have a Chromebook and I'm not getting pop ups anymore. I very rarely use my iPhone for PA or other sites I visit.
-
I use my phone, its an android, and i get some pop-ups, but also just tons of random ads top and bottom and inbetween posts. And recently random click here links that pop up all over. I'm not much for Facebook or other social media platforms, but there's certainly something to be said for ease of use and how it affects user engagement.

The lack of updates to this site over the years has lead to the issues we have. The updates are doable but significant in size and quantity, aka... price. Thats what the give away is for, as a fund raiser. Im hoping we will roll into the new year with a correctly operating site and none of those popups.
-
Well I dont know if this is a bad thing or hurtful to the site at all but if you use the browser duck duck go you get no ads and no issues.
-
+1 for duck duck go - no pop ups on my iphone

If that works for you, please use it then.

Yeah pop ups are a big pain for me, I’ve had to get through about 5 just to make this reply and they’re not easy ones to close. Will try in another browser. I also often can’t access the site on my phone, something to do with a security risk or something?
To be honest there is a reason I don’t post of many Facebook groups, there are far too few hurdles for people to join so, as said earlier in the thread, half the people have never shot a bow let alone made one.
That said I think there’s a few too many hurdles to get over to sign up here, you have to be pretty hardcore I think.
Personally, the thing that would make me check in more is more pics of finished bows/ bows in progress. More bows! Nah I think for people to post anything and everything they’re up to and not just showing the things they’re proud of. I included myself in that. Personally I don’t wan to spam the place with beginner questions and pics of my own stuff but I think there needs to be a bit of that to make it inviting for other people.
If the last few posts are fantastic bows or high brow questions from experienced bowyers it can be intimidating for new people to chime in
-
Jameswoodmot, don’t be intimidated. I have learned 90% of what I know about building bows from this site. I have not found another site with so many experienced people willing to share their knowledge with anybody willing to ask and learn. Please don’t be afraid to participate.
-
Yes, Jameswoodmot, don't be afraid to participate. We all started somewhere and at least here on PA nobody should be afraid to ask questions, as stupid as you might think they are. Your questions will be answered and great info will be given. We want to see your bows and watch your progress through this madness of wood bow building. The more pics you share and the more questions you ask the more we will understand where you are in the process. We can also see how far we have come just remembering the questions we asked back when we started. Remember, none of us came to this great sport knowing anything but we stuck to it and now we have the privilege to help someone else along. Just remember when the time comes please help to Pass It On to the next generation. :OK (--) :BB
-
Yeah James, stop being quiet! You have any idea how dull it is in a room full of people who agree with everything you say? We need fresh meat! Stick around and we will turn you into a bobblehead nodding along with all the experts here too before long! Im on the verge of saying something crazy just to get folks talking, like... osage is mediocre at best!
-
Well sleek,,,, TO QUOTE ARVIN, “ OSAGE IS KING” . And I just happen to agree. :) But then I’m still a rookie, so there’s that.
But seriously, there’s no better primitive site for learning, and everyone’s serious willingness to pass on knowledge that I know of. But we need more participation from both new and old members.

Honestly I’m surprised that a site like this has actual bowyers contributing all their secrets and sharing them with anyone who wants to read them.
I often wonder how I got here.
I’m not a computer person
I’m not a Facebook user or internet user for anything else.
I just got bit by a bug I didn’t even know existed.
I somehow found this site and jumped through the hoops to become a member.
I’m so glad I did. I found so many people who are so passionate and supportive.
I found an incredible source of information and if I couldn’t find what I was looking for. All I had to do was ask.
People like Pat B , Marc, Eric , Arvin , Dave and many others some who are not visiting the site regularly and I very much miss.
I guess what I’m saying is. I think the people like me. Who aren’t really computer savvy and really like to do things with their hands are out there.
I often wonder how many bowyers are out there that we never ever hear or see anything about.
I’m guessing a lot.
If you are out there lurking, please come into the room.
We welcome you and like Pat said . We want you to have success and we want to see your progress.
I think the only thing I enjoy more than watching someone shoot a Selfbow for the first time, is watching someone shoot a Selfbow they made for the first time.
Let’s see a bunch of guys and gals shooting their Selfbows
What we really need is activity new and old
Question answers and lot of pictures

Yeah PA is definitely one of the best forums. Everyone is very kind and there's hardly ever any weird drama. I have a couple new projects I am going to be posting about. One juneberry bow and another juniper bow haha
-
Ya it is a great place, all I can ask is just hang in there , things are going in the right direction and will be even better if that is possible than it was before, just going to take a little time, Kevin is working hard to get things in order so be patient and he will get us there. :)

Thanks Pappy, but I got to say, the success of this place is because the people of the community made it that way. I can do anything except provide the platform. Its the people here that make it great.
