Title: Black Rose arrow set
Post by: Robert Pougnier on January 24, 2026, 03:56:33 pm
I made these target/stump arrows to match a recent bow.

27 1/2", 480 grains, spined 45-50# (caved-in and finally bought an ace spine tester). Balanced 1 3/8" FOC. The points are sharpened duplex nails ground and cut to 70gn.

Shafts are wild rose. Silk wrapping for fletching and a short wrap of sinew for the nock ends. Colors are carbon black in shellac and red acrylic. Finish is spirit varnish and paste wax.

Thanks for looking!

Robert, if you live in the US it is illegal to use any non-game bird feathers whether it is marine or shore birds(pelican) or songbirds unless they are considered invasive exotics. Raptors are also a no no. Those feathers could cost you $1000 apiece. This has been a law for over 100 years.
Those are beautiful arrows none the less. Wild rose makes excellent arrows and you've done a good job with these.

Pat, thanks for the heads up.

I should know better and this is a bit embarrassing as I work as a seasonal wildlife biologist. I just tried to remove the post. Being unable to do so I edited. Maybe you can remove it? My apologies for the inconvenience. I know this does not change the legality but I feel like mentioning that these were removed from a deceased animal found on the beach. I would under no circumstance kill a pelican.

Robert, over the years we have had to remind folks about this law. It does seem to be a waste not utilizing discarded feathers or feathers from dead birds but as far as the law is concerned it doesn't matter where or how you got the feathers. They are illegal to possess.
I'll see about removing the post.
You don't need to apologize for posting these arrows. We actually need more folks making and posting arrows. We just want folks to understand the law and follow it.
