Title: Heat treating Buffalo River
Post by: leapingbare on June 27, 2008, 11:12:15 am
So i tyred to heat treat some buffalo River chert last night and this morning when i looked at it there was no change in texture, only a change in color went from a dull light brown color to a Rusty color brown.
I cooked it in a pan of sand in the oven at 550' for one and a half hrs. The Kansas chert i heat treat changed and became waxier. But its the buffalo river that i would like to get waxier.
Anyone ever had any success heat treating Buffalo River?

Jesse, when I heat treat the local chert we have here. I just put the spalls in the toaster oven, turn it all the way on (500dgs) and let it cook all night. I unplug it in the morning when I go to work and it is cool when I get home. You can usually hear the diferrence when you smack it.
