Title: Billbow Ipe/Boo
Post by: majsnuff on August 03, 2008, 02:41:01 am
Here is my first Ipe/Bamboo. "Billbow" Glue up was back in June, just finished it today. Pulls 58# at 28". 1-1/8" wide by 7/8"thick at the grip, 1-1/16x3/4 at the fades, 7/8x5/8 mid limb, 3/8"wide x 5/8" thick at the nocks. 65-1/2" end to end, 64". Glued in 1-3/4" of reflex which is already gone. Pin nocks and no grip wrap, true oil finish.
It is now basicaly a straight bow that shoots nicely but with a bit of handshock.
I purposely left the Bamboo 1/4" thick full length. It looks nice but I am sure it will overpower the Ipe sooner or later. The outer limbs were narrowed to reduce mass, but not enough to ease the handshock. Next bow will be narrower yet.

Majsnuff,

Your bow looks real good!  I use the thicker bamboo all the time on certain designs since it lowers the limb mass, and get very good arrow speed.

Your bow probably has a bit of hands shock primarily because the upper limb is a touch stiff in the outer half, and getting the tips a little smaller both ways. Also if these bows hold a lot of reflex you need to shoot heavy arrows since they are still retaining a lot of energy when the arrows leaves the bow..Heavier arrows will help as well..And perhaps a slightly higher brace height too.

As far as loosing the set, I think humidity on unfinished bamboo probably contributed to that, plus the first time experience of making these style of bows...

On the deeper core styles like yours its harder for the bamboo to overpower the belly, and often the softening of the bamboo from humidity is misdiagnosed for just this..

Very nice bow. I love the contrast of the woods. I'll have to try one someday.

Thanks to you all for the nice comments.
As for the Humidity affecting this bow performance. Where I live, the RH is about 20%. So I doubt humidity had an impact.
Again thanks to all for your kind comments.

My error, the RH here is closer to 60, not 20. No excuse for the error except for brain cramps.
