Well I finally finished another Osage. I cut this tree in May '08 and when I split it I had this little stave that i thought was to small to do anything with. After looking at it for about a week I decided to quick dry it and try to make a bow from it since I'd be waiting on the others to dry anyway. Turns out this little stave really wanted to be a bow. This thing really flings an arra. Nothin' fancy just plain and simple. It has taken no set and I've put 60+ arras thru it so far.

It don't take much osage to make a bow and you have made a good 'un! Pat

Nice looking bow John, nothing wrong plain and simple.

Nice bow, with no set, I hope my osage turns out as good.

Great work and good looking bow. I say use the wood even if it is to small or too ugly. If it breaks its not a failure, it is a learning experience. ;)
-
Nice little bow there :)
-
Turned out right well...simple but effective. Nice job! ;)
-
Very nice job on that one, well done. :)

Nice and simple, looks great. Better to let the wood guide you sometimes.

Good looking bow.

nice little eastern woodlands style bow. for your draw length you could take an inch or so off each tip and bump up the poundage for a first class hunting bow.
-
Thanks for the replies guys. Glad you like it... I really do.
Mechslasher, I've put serious thought into cutting the tips back an inch, but man she really shoots sweet. How many pounds will be added if I take an inch off of each limb and could that change the smoothness of the draw?

I think if you cut the tips back and inch it would give you 5-7 lbs. But I wouldn't. Unless you plan on hunting bear it should be enough to kill anything in the woods with a good arrow. Also, if you feel like it shoots sweet right now, then the bow is talking to you and trying to tell you that this is how it likes to be. It may not shoot as sweet if you take its length down 2 inches. A nice long draw length and easy weight provide good arrow placement and that's what really counts. Just my opinion.

I bet it's a pretty fast bowand I wouldn't change it.

Thanks for the reasurance guys...That's what I was thinking and what I'll do. I don't want to screw it up cause it is my smoothest bow yet.

dddddOkie, My best shooting bows have been osages that were very narrow, 64to 67 ntn, and 45 to 50 pounds. The very narrow bows seem to be both smoother and faster. Sounds like a good bow , I wouldn't change it. Congrats.

Yeh if you like it this way then by all means leave it be. Great job. I bet it'll be shootin a long time from know. Danny

Very nice bow - any chance of a larger full draw picture?

Oldbow, I'll try to take some better and bigger pictures tomorrow night and post them. I can't seem to resize this one.
I can't learn to build bows AND work a computer too. ;D

Very good looking little bow! Saw Filer

Your full draw looks great and would convince anyone that you know how to make a well-tillered bow.
Got your fine osage bookmarked too.

John, for some reason, I'm not seeing the pictures. Hopefully I'll get to see it in person Saturday. Things still looking good from my standpoint if your schedule looks OK.

Mike everything on my side is a go for Saturday. The wife and daughter are going shopping, so It'll be a guy day. ;D Woo hoo. There may be some more folks show up but the more the merrier.
This is the little bow I started working on last Friday and I was shooting it on Sunday. It really wanted to be a bow.
Give me a call by tomorrow and let me know, there's a couple other guys I have to call if we are going to get together.

Nice work John.

It is a nice bow guys. I got to see it in person Saturday and shoot one of his other bows. John makes some shooting little bows. John invited me and several others over to work on bows and I had a blast. Not only did he open his shop up to us, he grilled us some backstrap, cooked some beans and cornbread, homegrown tomatoes, jalapenos, the works for lunch. :D He got me started on my first bow, unfortunately I think I may have got too carried away with the bandsaw. Oh well, if she blows apart, i guess that's one lesson never to be forgotten.
John, thanks again for the hospitality. Tell your dad and Jake I said "hi". I look forward to another session of Hol-Jam. ;D

Nice little stick. :) You must have really quick-dried it to have a completed bow in 2 or 3 months!

that looks like a great bow

Mike I had a great time as well.
We had some great folks there. Included was, Chad Slagle (thesingingbowyer), Donnie Wilson (Full Quiver) and his son Logan, Mike Magee (Dingus), Mike Chase (Otoebow) and his dad and my dad. We done some tiller adjustment on Donnie's Black Locust bow, which he has done a fine job on, Started Mike C. a board bow, which will probably be to light but I have a Osage stave that has his name on it so he can make a huntin weight bow. I traded Mike M. some arras for some Turkey Feathers and broke my latest board bow project >:(. Now Donnie knows he's not the only one who breaks bows. All in all we had a great day building and shooting bows. We will definitely do this again soon.
Here's some pics.
