I was thinking about getting a KITH started here. For the newcomers to knife making, it stands for Knife In The Hat. Basically, everyone who is interested in joining throws their name in a hat and I will find some impartial person ( any suggestions) on here to draw the names. A week or so before the shipping date, the makers will be PM'ed the recipients name so they can make contact and get the shipping address.
I would also like to include knappers in this also. Steel or stone does not matter because a knife is a knife. Do your best work and have fun. Unless someone has any objections or suggestions, there is no theme to follow or size limits. Make what you make best. They can be forged, stock removal, or knapped as long as you made it. Sheaths are a must. If you are not good at making sheaths, just do the best you can and you won't hear any complaints. If you make a bowie and will get mad if you do not recieve a bowie, please do not enter. This is the easy way to start a collection, make friends, and have fun. I am sure that whatever you make, the, the recipient will be very happy with it.
To give everyone time to see the post and respond, I think the cuttoff date should be midnight August 23 and have the knives shipped by September 20. Any sugestions for different dates are welcome.
One other thing, when you receive the knife, you have to take some pics and post them.

madcrow this sounds cool Im in. Joel
-
Madcrow,
Count me in as well.
Tommy
-
Glad you both could join in. It is nice to see that I am not the only one that likes to play with sharp objects. That reminds me, I need more band aides. :o
-
Count on me, sounds like fun eh :)
-
i could get into that...have a few blanks, just need some motivation! Sign me up!
Scott
-
So far the list is:
Madcrow
deerhunter97370
woodsman1031
DanaM
radius
The responses are coming in quick. Keep 'em comin.
-
i would love to partake in the festivities
except i dont know how to make knives, yet. thought about trying it just never gave it a stab though.
-
Count me in! Just be carefull not to cut a limb off with the knife I make!!! PLEASE!!!! :'(
-
I'm all for it too, but I think the date needs to be extended longer. If not, I'm out. Going back to Brazil again this week. The one I was in on Tradgang lasted quite a few months and there was over 70 knives before it was over. I got two real nice ones.
-
Like, I said, I am open to suggestions. I don't want anyone to be tied down or left out due to time restraint. I know that hunting seaon is right around the corner adnd some will be busier than others, so does anyone have a suggestion for the extended time. How about Thankgiving. It could be like an early Christmas present.
-
or how about new years
it could be a celebration of all thats new, like new knives for every one.
that would also give me time to try my hand at it.
madcrow: took your advise and checked out that build along, looks like something a domb old mechanic like myself could handle
gonna talk to a couple of guys i know that are nailbenders and see if sthey've got some used up saw blades that i can mooch.thanks
peace,
tim
-
New years is a bit far out there, I'd think sometime in Oct, how about Halloween?. Just so ya all know I will most likely be doing the Christmas Trade again
this year, probably get that going next month :)
-
Oct. 31 sounds good to me. By New Years, I would have probably forgotten about it. Short term memory loss. Mullet, I hope that will give you enough time to get back from Brazil. Sailordad, that should be plenty of time to get the basics down. If you are having trouble getting steel, I could send you some to get you started.
-
Halloween sounds good to me, I just started a knife this afternoon. Are we going to do like Tradgang did, like you can put more than one knife in the hat?
-
Is there a size limit? I got a hunk of obsidian over 3 ft in diameter. 8)
-
Count me in. I can't knap... but i've got steel.
John
-
Halloween it is. There is now size limit on the blades or the overall size. If you want to make a sword, make one. If it is a neck knife you have on your mind, make one. As far as how many times you enter, enter as many times as you like. I was thinking about entering twice myself, just to add to my collection.
-
Count me in, too.
-
Is that too, ot two times?
-
I'm in for two Madcrow ;D
Ok where's the knappers on this ??? Come on guys time to belly up to the bar so to speak :)
-
You got it Dana. Here is the line up so far:
Madcrow
deerhunter97370
woodsman1031
DanaM
radius
sailordad
D. Tiller
mullet
Okie1
Me, Dana and possibly mullet are in for two knives each.
-
Count me in tentatively for two! These will both be obsidian or daicite blades with yew wood handles or possibly some other type of exotic species. I will probably make them both wrapped with some type of primitive cordage in the Japanese style. One my be a hunting blade while the other may be in the dirk style. Dont know yet still thinking on it!
-
I'm in for two, possibly three. I've got some stone knives already made.
-
Cool. I was working on one and it said CRACK. Took almost an inch off the tip. Oh well. I have got plenty to work on.
-
I'll join in on the fun... ;D
-
Cant wait to see what ya all make!
-
Count me in for dos, amigos...i've got one shaped like a japanese tanto, and another, simpler knife more like a fishing knife...

Madcrow,
Please count me in for a 2nd time.
Thanks
-
You got it woodsman.
-
madcrow, I put it at the top. We need to keep it where everybody can see it. :D
-
It's nice to have friends in high places. ;D
-
madcrow, q for u:
after you heat and quench the blade, freezing the carbon atoms as carbide, is there a time limit on doing the heat temper by baking it in your wife's oven? Or can it be any old time after the knife has been shaped and put through the quench?
Another q: To make those cool damascus blades you make, have you tried using twisted cable? I saw a guy do that (don fogg or somebody) and it looks pretty damn cool.
Scott
-
I don't wait between quenching and tempering. Most of mine are from sawblades which is L6 metal. Some of the other metals work better if you wait though. As far as the damascus goes, I think you have me mixed up with Mechslasher. I have never posted damascus, but I have seen it made from some types of wire cable, chains from chainsaws and other things. It takes some serious forging to make damascus.
-
oh your right, my bad.
i'm not set up to even try a damascus blade by forging, just shaping a blade by stock removal similar to how you do it. I have some old sawblades kicking around. I was checking out propane blowtorches in the hardware store today. The one i looked at goes to 1870 degrees celsius, whatever that is in farenheit...that should be hot enough to make the metal non-magnetic, i think?
I'm glad you started this KITH. When will we be paired up with the guys we are making knives for?
Radius
-
radius I use oxy/acetylene torch to both anneal= soften the steel so it can be drilled/filed and then to reharden the blade. The only problem I see with the propane torch is keeping the whole blade at non-magnetic(red hot) you can't get one part red hot then another, the whole blade needs to be non magnetic at the time of the quench. Of course there are methods for just edge quenching.
-
hm...i don't understand why one torch would work and not another, unless the oxy torch simply emitted a way larger flame...i've seen videos of people forging knives...forging, not just shaping from flat stock...on youtube, by heating a railroad spike in an old barbecue filled with red hot coals...maybe i'll try that...
anyone here ever try that?
-
That is probally not charcoal but coal. It get's hotter. An OxyAcet torch gets way hotter than a Propane torch. You can turn steel into a puddle with an OA torch.
-
well, i have access to a propane torch but not the other, so i'll give it a whirl.
i'm not after a puddle of steel anyway! ;)
i'm really looking forward to this. I told some guys at work about the KITH over lunch on thursday, and they all think it's pretty cool...time to get to work...
good luck everybody
-
When I do the heat treating, I place the blade on the kitchen stove, turn the burner on high, and when it gets as hot as it will, I hit it with the propane torch until it is non magnetic. Porpane won't do it alone, and neither will the stove, but together they will get it there in just a couple minutes. One word of caution here, I have the stove with the older spiral burners that are made of metal. I would not try it on one of the fancy new stoves with the glass top, or whatever it is. You may be in for a big repair bill if it melts the top of the stove.
-
Uhh,, I guess you don't do it when the wife is home either? ::)
-
If she only knew what went on in the kitchen while she was away >:D.
-
q for u more experienced guys...
i've got the 2 knives shaped and i've spent some time with them on the stone...how sharp can i expect non-treated steel to get? should i just get them "pretty sharp" and then do the funky trick with the stove and the oil? Or should i persevere until they will cut through diamonds and THEN heat treat them?
-
Just get them 90% sharp and then harden them, after you quench them check the hardness with a file. If you can barely remove
metal with a file they are hard. Then clean them up and temper in a 400 deg oven until straw yellow color. Do your final sharpening after the
knife is finished it saves on blood loss ;)
-
thx
-
Here is the list so far. It isn't getting much longer, but it is getting wider with people deciding to make two knives. We have a good mix of steel and stone, but w could always use more. DOn't be shy.

HFD60
I mentioned on the KITH string on PP that we had one going on here, maybe a few of them will join in.
-
Madcrow,
Put me in for 2. I really like makin' knives. t's almost as addictive as makin' bows.
John
-
It's done. I modified my last post. ;D
-
This is really getting exiting! I have my first knife epoxied up drying as I type this. I feel like a kid at Christmas! We should do this every quarter.
It is putting a little pressure on me to make sure I am ready in time. It is also going to have to learn to make a sheath. I think this is a great for "forcing" me to try my best at making a knife someone else will be proud of.
Tommy
-
Check out this link. He uses nails to make the holes for sewing, I use a drill. He also gouges out leather in the center to help it bend, I just wet, fold and clamp it.
http://beknivessite2.homestead.com/pouchsheath.html (http://beknivessite2.homestead.com/pouchsheath.html)
Be careful if you use the hot wax bath at the end. It would be better to experiment with some scrap leather and ckeck the temp with a thermometer. If it gets too hot and you drop the sheath in, you will have a wrinkled up mess and a learning experience.
-
Thanks for the link
-
For all those still pondering the idea of joining, there are three days left. Go ahead and join, you know you want to. I am going to get in contact with the name drawer today and have him post on here. Everybody send him the your shipping address and if you need right handed or left handed sheaths. As soon as he gets the names drawn, do you want him to post the order (#1 sends to #2, #2 sends to #3, last on the list sends to #1) or do you want to keep it a big secret. I will leave it to you. I will also have him send a PM with the addressor addresses that you drew, just in case someone decides to go on a hunting trip or will be gone unexpectedly around the shipping date.
-
Madcrow I need to drop out. I wont have enough time before the deadline to finish. Maybe next one after hunting season. Joel
-
If you are sure about it, I will take your name off the list. Thanks for letting me know.
-
If the deadline is still Halloween, count me in.
-
Cool, lost one and gained another, in the same day. Count yourself in.
-
Who do I send my adress to?
Keep it a secret until the last minute!
-
Maybe he will chime in tomorrow.
-
All of You can PM me your address. I would be honered to draw named for ya'll..
David
-
Don't forget, right or left handed. You may even recieve a right or left handed knife. You never know. >:D
-
Mad Crow Im sure I dont have the time. This round. Thanks Joel

David

Got a lancelot blade done but its a foot long. Is that too big?
-
Not if you can mail it in one piece.
-
Now I have to figure out how to haft it and then thats one down!
David T
-
OK, we are winding down now. The cut off for joining is Midnight tonight. Jump on in while you can. Everybody that has not done it yet, needs to send a PM to knightd with your name, mailling address, and if you need right or left handed. I think he only has three so far.
-
David,
I PMed my address to you.
Tommy
-
Madcrow,
When are we going to schedule the next one ;)
Tommy
-
I got it woodsman.. I was going to do the drawing tomorrow so the rest of you guy's need tp chime in... ;D..
David
-
I will probably get another one started after the Christmas trade. I don't want people to be too overwhelmed with trying to get too much done.
-
Ok I want to see pics??
David
-
Question: Can we send our knives out now or are we supposed to wait until Halloween. Or is Halloween just the deadline to have them sent out.
John
-
Halloween was just a deadline for shipping. I am planning on sending mine as soon as they are done, that way I don't get too attached to them. >:D >:D >:D
-
Same here! I just need to get over the flue and I will be working on them again. Anyone done wooden sheaths before?
David T
-
D tiller, i made a wooden sheath once. took 2 oak blanks 1/4 " thick, laid the knife on what would be the inside of each, marked it out, then chiseled away the wood until the knife would sit in nicely and the two slats would join with clean lines. After that, glue em together: just don't go crazy with the glue on the inside, cuz you don't want it to leak into the hollow.
-
I finished both of mine today. I need to send them off before I keep them. ;D Are we going to post pictures as we finish them and not say who they are going to? That way , maybe giving everybody an idea what might be heading their way, but not knowing who is getting what, and making it an agonizing mystery. You guy's decide an if yes, I'll post them tomorrow.
-
As long as the pics get posted, I don't see a problem with everybody else wondering. The recipient needs to chime in and rub it in when they are received.
-
I'll take them tomorrow then, by the way, making sheaths, sucks. ;)
-
Just finished the first obsidian blade for the neck knife I'm making. I will be putting the the sheath and handle on it some time in the next week or so. I will try and get the next blade made soon. I'm thinking of hafting the blade into a yew wood handle or VG fir one. The sheath will be wood too with a special toggle to go on a sling for wearing around the neck. Don't know how I will get a strong enough friction fit on the obsidian blade to keep it in the sheath. Any ideas? Was aiming for a larger sized knife next but this cold is getting me down! :'(
-
David, try lining the inside with felt.
-
Here is a couple that somebody is going to get. One is a hornstone knife and sheath and the other is a neck knife made from a spring in an old trap.I leaft the pits in the metal, thought it added character and it is shave your face razor sharp. Sorry about the sheaths, my leather skills are lacking.
-
Damn eddie dem is nice :) That first sheath is really nice did you do the bead work? And nothing wrong with the second sheath either :)
-
Thanks Dana. Kathie and the son were arguing about which one did the bead work. It used to be a Saturday night family thing, Beading and watching TV. Forgot to add , and it's hard to see from the pictures the scales on the Spring knife is hard maple and cocobola.
-
Cool!!!!
-
I don't see anything wrong with them and the scale does give it some character. I think you did a fine job on the sheaths.
-
Thank you ,sir.
-
Really nice Eddie.... ;D
-
Great looking knives and sheaths!! :)
John
-
Good looking knives Eddie, and I think the sheaths look great myself.
-
Here's a few knives I made over the long weekend. A couple of these will be shipping out to their new owners in a couple of days. I haven't decided which ones to give away yet. You guys tell me which ones I should send to the guys I drew.
Hope you enjoy.

Their all nice okie :) Man I have to get busy on my knives :o
-
I guess call me crazy, but I say send the antler and the walnut. They all look great. Keep them coming.
-
I like them all, but I'm partial towards the antler one and then the fillet knife looking one next.
-
Well, got both of mine out today. They are coming Priority Mail, should get there in less than 3 days.
-
Same here Mullet. I hope the new owners enjoy them.
John
-
Just got both obsidian blades finished. They're in the tear drop fashion (Dont remember the exact name. laurel leaf?) and made out of Glass Buttes obsidian, one from the pumpkin and the other from the Red stuff. No I will not reveal where I got the red stuff. IT'S MINE!!!! MINE! MINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D ;D ;D
-
well ihavent had any luck finding bras rod for pins for the handle of my knife,so i decided to go with glue.
i have one question though, what kind of 2 part epoxy should i use,any ideas?
thanks
tim
-
Tim for brass rod go to a auto parts store or welding supplier and get 1/8 inch brazing rod, you have to clean the flux off and I always use glue even with the pins.
I prefer devcon 5 minute epoxy.
-
Check tractor supply and welding supplies, hardware stores. Some sell the rods without the flux in 3 ft. sections. I use the Devcon 2 ton epoxy. It works great. Pm me your address and I will send you some brass and stainless steel rods. I have several hundred, so I am sure I can spare a few.
-
Home Depot and Truevalue have it in 3' sections. You can go to Hobby stores and get the tubing and star rod to make Mosaic pins.

No hobby stores in da UP eddie >:(
-
I'm still working on your care package Dana, The UP sounds like trying to find stuff in Brazil.

It can be tough eddie, the nearest Lowes from me is 100 miles, all we have here in town is an Ace hardware :(
-
My favorite place.
-
Recieved one of my knives today and man its nice thanks Okie1 ;D Its picture number 5 and 6 on his post. Will try and get a picture up in the next few days.
Thaknks Okie ;D
-
Well, still have not had a chance to start work on hafting the blades. Looks like it may take me a bit. Laurel leaf blades look prety good hope you guys will like them when they are done.
-
Glad you like it Dana. I figured it would go good with the fine bow you made. Hope you get some blood on it soon.
John
-
My 2 knives are done. I ordered the sheath supplies and they came in about a week ago. I will get started on the sheaths hopefully soon. I am having a lack of confidence problem on starting the sheaths :-[. Has anyone else had this problem on thier first sheath?
Tommy
-
Yep! ;D
-
Yep, me too. I sent two knives out Priority mail last week. That means usually 3 days. Hope they made it.
-
Got mine from Okie, and it's a nice'un. 8) Thanks, Okie-it'll be put to good use.

Glad you like it Hillbilly. The walnut handle is from Madcrow that he sent me in a trade. Hope you get some blood on it soon.
John
-
I have been working 56 hour per week and have gotten severely behind. First off, Mullet, I received the little spring knife, I guess on Monday. I have been so busy that I did not have time to get the mail. When I saw the box overflowing, I figured it was time to empty it. Anyway, I love the knife and it does have characterand I like the sheath too, especially the antler retainer. My son loved it so much, I had to help him make one. I let him make up the pattern, cut it out and make the handles. I had to bevel the edge because he is still nervous when he tries to use the grinder. He also made his own sheathfor it, so if a nine year old can do it, I know you guys can. I will post some pics in the morning of both knives plus the one I just finished for the KITH on paleo. Second of all, OKIE1, why is it that your walnut handles look better than mine, and they are from the same wood? Great looking knife.
-
You must of sent me the good stuff. ;D
John
-
Got the handle done for one of the obsidian blades last night. Its our of NW old growth straight grain cedar. I will me making the sheath for it out of some other wood. Would like to make it out of the same cedar but I ran out! I will see what I can find. I will also be using a resin and beeswax mixture to glue the knife into the handle so its an authentic looking NW Native design. No carving of head of animals or totems on the handle though. I suck at carving! ;D Man, doing all this by hand is taking a long time. But its coming out Purdy!!! With more experience I hope to be able to make even better knifes. Any suggestions on hafting and obsidian blade into a wood handle?
David T
-
Madcrow, glad you got it. I was begining to worry. Still haven't heard about the other one.
-
Here is the one I got from mullet. I think I have worn it everyday this week. This is a cool knife. Thanks.

Glad you like it. I had to make one for myself also. That steel will get sharp ,too.
-
Mullet, I recieved your Hornstone knife last week. I love it!!! I've been so dang busy the last couple of weeks I haven't had a chance to let you know.
-
Glad you got it. Anytime I ship a stone knife I worry about it making it there in one piece. I made a mistake on the stone ID, it's Georgetown chert.
-
i know the ship date was two days ago so i would like to publicly appologize for not getting my knife out on time.
i dont want anyone to think that i am not going to live up to my end of the deal.
this is my first attempt at knife making so i am a little behind,i did put the finish on tonight and just need to make a sheath for it.
i am currnetly trying to make adeal for leather, hopefully have a deal going for some leather. i hope to be mailing it off very soon.
so i do apologize for my tardiness, but i am trying to turn out a decent knife for the person that i was drawn to make it for,and i would rather it be a little late
than far from perfect.
please forgive :-[
tim
-
Tim you haven't missed any deadline, I believe we have till Halloween eh :)
-
thats good, i thought i read that it was sept 20th
-
Recieved both of my knives, the bigger one is from Okie1 and the neck knife is from someone in Pennsylvania
Thats all I could read of the return address the box was a little chewed up. My thanks to both of you I like
them a lot :)
I have one knife done and the second about half way and need to make sheaths also, please have patience
I'm getting there.

DanaM,
I like both of them, but that neck knife is KILLER!!!!!! Man that necker is super small and super usefull looking!
Gongrats!!!
Tommy
-
Yea I like it but I wish I knew who it was from ???
-
They are both nice knives. I like the style of the necker, maybe he will chime in so we can find out who the culprit is.
-
The blade is stamped R.R. if that helps.
-
Richie Rich????????????????????? ;D
-
DanaM,
It was a mistake, that necker was supposed to come to me ;)

Thanks eddie, dats him :)
Now them my thanks Richard for the nice knife :)

Hello,
I now have my sheaths cut out moistened, folded and laying in place. I have 12.5lbs laying on each sheath! The leather I bought from Jantz is about 1/4" thick. It is good stuff, but way thicker than I had planned on. I Just need to drill holes stitch and They will be completed . I am not dying these sheaths. I had planned on leaving them natural, and I bought some neatsfoot oil to soften them up for the new owners. I have really enjoyed doing this, I hope we can do another really soon.
Tommy
-
DanaM, glad you liked it. I was a little worried since it was only my 3rd attempt at making a knife.
-
DanaM, glad you liked it. I was a little worried since it was only my 3rd attempt at making a knife.
Not to worry, its really nice and I will probably copy it :) It will be hanging from neck this hunting season ;D
And Okie's will be at my belt ;D
-
I shipped out the 2 knives today. One is going to Mullet and the other to Dtiller. They are both neck knives.
I finally got over my sheath making mental block. I just had to jump in there and do it. The leather I ordered was so thick that It was very very hard to work. I think it was the thickest that Jantz had. I now know to get a thinner leather next time. The sheaths are not works of art, but they are good sheaths that will protect the knife as well as the user. I hope the knives will be used this hunting season.
I hope yall like them.
Tommy
-
The majority of my leather is from 1/8" to 1/4" thinck. When I use it to make neck sheaths, I lay it over a broom handle with the flesh side up and just use a razor blade like a draw knife and slice some of the leather off where it is going to fold. You can also use wood carving gouges and gouge out a few strips and fold it over. I originally started doing that to thin some down for the welt and skive the edges that contact the welt, otherwise I would have 3/4" of leather to sew through.
-
Madcrow,
Thats a great idea! I will do that next time. It actually didnt take that long to make the sheaths. Do you have a self made tool you use for the edging? Like the area where the stitches would go. I have seen a few tools in the Harbor Freight catalog, but I would like to make some leather working tools if I could.
I feel like a kid at Christmas waiting on my knives.

Follow this link.
http://beknivessite2.homestead.com/leathergouges.html
In a pinch, you can press down a strip for the stitches by wetting the leather and waiting a few minutes til the leather starts to look dry on top and roll a quarter or nickel down the length of the welt. If you push and try and keep it evenly spaced fromt he edge, it looks great. You can use the info on the link and make an edger for give the edge a rolled down look.
-
Thanks madcrow!
-
Hope to have pictures up tommow of my entries and then off to the Post Office :)
-
Thanks Tommy! Cant wait to receive it in the mail. Just about have my first knife ready to go. Took a lot of shaping to get the handle and sheath to match up right. Blade fits in the all wood sheath with a pressure fit. This is my first knife in this manner which I tried to base on a northwest design for a utilitarian knife. The next one is going to be a bit different with the hafting and design of the handle and I think I will make the sheath out of leather instead of wood since I'm starting to run out of time. The handle and sheath on the first one are out of cedar. The handle is old growth cedar and the sheath is second growth. I thought the growth ring difference in the wood would be a cool thing to set off the handle and sheath. This is fun! Wish I could do it more often.

WheewHoo! Looking forward to my new knives. ;D
-
Got my blade finished, gotta haft it up now.
-
well mt knife is finished, trying to make a sheath now.
i'm finding this to be more challenging than making he knife itself.
gotta figure out how to make the leather fit the knife snuggly yet not to tight and have the proper shape etc etc etc.
well gotta go play with the leather some more now.

Here's my KITH entries:
First is my first stone knife, blade is Kansas chert hafted with elk antler and birch bark sheath.
Second is from big bandsaw steel, hafted with chokecherry burl and a small bolster of abalone sheel, ya can't see the shell in the pictures.

Those are some pretty ones, Dana.
-
DanaM,
Those really look great! :o
Tommy
-
Nice Dana! I will be putting my last coat of finnish on my first knife tonight and then I will get a picture of it and send if off on Thursday.
David
-
Daggone Dana. Those look great. Just box both of them up and send them to me. ;D ;D ;D I will test them out fully and send back a report on the performance ASAP.
-
DanaM,
Where did you get the leather for that chert knife sheath? I like the markings in it.
Tommy
-
Its not leather! That there is birch bark!!! :o ;D
-
Hey Tim, you can soak the sheath in rubbing alcohol and then cover the knife with cling wrap and put it in the sheath. Start pressing down and working the leather wherever you want it to form to the knife. If you just want it to form to the blade, you can get a couple pieces of thin flat wood a little wider than the sheath, press them to the outside of the blade and clamp with spring clamps or C clamps and let it dry like that.
-
Sent em out yesterday :)
-
Got the second handler finished now. First knife is done and will go out to the happy customer sometime this week/next week...maybe sometime this month... ;D Yeah, I know I'm slow! Must be something in the water.
-
Tommy, Got home today and had a great looking knife and Sheath waiting for me. Thanks a lot ,buddy, I'll get some pictures up tomorrow. Tommy are you related to a Tye Thacker up near Wichita Falls, Scotland to be exact?
-
ok so i finally finished the sheath, knife too.
so i was wondering, should i post pics or wait for the lucky,or unlucky, recipient to post pics?
i will say that making the sheath was actually harder for me than making the knife, so i will apologize to the individual
in advance for my poor leatherman abilities.as far as the knife itself goes i hope he enjoys and likes it,as it is only my second one. i made
my first one exactly like his,it was my demo/prototype knife.

I am glad that you like your knife ;D
I have never heard of him, but I will ask some of my family.

Got the other KITH knife today. Thanks, Dana. That is a pretty piece of wood. Here they are.

Nice guys! I will check my mail tonight!
-
Eddie hope ya like it :) The handle is a bit oversized to the blade but in my own defense it gets cold up here and them small handles and frozen hands usually lead to bloodshed :D My own that is ;)
-
I think the handle fits real nice. I forgot about the Abalone until I was sharpening it and caught a reflection in the blade. That's cool. They are both face hair shavers after a session on my wheels. Thanks, Guy's.
-
Those are cool. Looks like you are ready to skin something. The neighbors better hide the cats tonight. >:D >:D >:D
-
Nice guys! I will check my mail tonight!
David,
Yours should be there today!
Tommy
-
I know! Its just that I'm putting in 10 - 12 hour days. No time to get to the post office! Will try again tomarrow morning.
-
Just picked up the knife Tommy! Its a purdy little thing. Thanks! I will send out the first sometime next week. The next one is almost done!
David T

Hey David, Kathie and I will be in your neck of the woods in July '09. We will be on LaConner Island for a family Reunion.

First knife is on its way to John Holman! John you are now the happy owner of a Northwest designed obsidian knife with cedar wood handle and sheath. The obsidian is a red from Glass Buttes OR and the handle is Old Growth cedar while the sheath is 2nd growth. I thought it would be cool to see the growth ring differences.
John can you put a picture of it up on the site when you receive it in the mail? I don't have a camera yet so I could not do it myself!
David T
-
Heck ya I'll put pictures up David :) :). Now you got me all excited and you know how slow the mail is ;D.
Can't wait to see it. It sounds great.
Thanks
John
-
Nice looking knives guys !
-
well i finally got my knife mailed off today.
i hope you like it RADIUS ;D
it was only the second knife i made. he first one i kept it was a prototype you could say. i used it to figure out what the heck i was doing.
enjoy and i hope you dont cut yourself,i think its got a decent edge to it.
peace,
tim
-
HEY!, Where's all the pictures?
-
Okie, you got that knife yet? Now be careful. Its obsidian! May not look sharp but it will slice you silly if your not carefull.
-
David, I got it, but I ain't had time to take pictures yet. It is great though. I'll get pictures tonight for sure.
John
-
'bout got mine done, I'll try to pop it in the mail sometime this week.
-
Will the 31st ever get here ::) I am about to go nuts, I am dying to see what I am going to get >:D
-
Still working on the last one. Just not much time here to do anything with it! URRR!!!!
-
Alright I finally got home at a decent hour to get the pictures posted. David did a great job on this one.
I bet I have the best smelling knife around, lol. ;D I had to check it to be sure it wasn't soap. Nope it's real obsidian.
I hope to get some blood on it soon.
Thanks David, I really appreciate it.

Gotta finnish the last one and send it out! I'm calling this next one the "Hornet!" You'll all understand when ya see it! ;D
-
Dtiller,
That is an awsome looking knife!
Tommy
-
Sweet :)
-
Dtiller,
What kind of wood did you make the sheath from? Is it 2 pieces of wood joined together to make the handle? It is hard to tell because of the way the grain is running. It really looks good!
Tommy
-
i think the handle is two pieces of wood,or one that was split. if you look close ypu can see a seam in the last pic.
-
Handle is two pieces of old growth cedar and the sheath is one piece of 2nd growth cedar. Glad you guys like it. All done by hand and now power tools to boot. The obsidian is the rare to find red glass Buttes stuff. Harder to find in larger sizes these days. The next one will be an elm wood handle and pumpkin obsidian. Been meaning to work on it but I have been down with bronchitis. May be a bit late on getting the last one out. Sorry!!!
David T
-
those wooden sheaths are really sweet in conjunction with that obsidan rock/glass blades
with halloween quickly approaching, wouldnt mind seeing something like that showing up in the mail
-
Sorry! Next one goes to "Woodsmann". Have to see who I'm doing the x-mass trade with. You may be the one! ;)
-
i think the handle is two pieces of wood,or one that was split. if you look close ypu can see a seam in the last pic.
I see it now. It is hard to tell the way the grain is oriented.
I am so glad to hear about the knife.
I hope you get to feeling better, I have had bronchitis before. It is VERY painful when you cough. I got bronchitis when I was still smoking several years back. I just knew the Dr. was going to tell me I had lung cancer.
Tommy
-
It's starting to get better now. a couple days ago it fealt like my right lung was trying to jump out of my chest. May be able to work on the knife this evenning. we shall see!
-
Finally got a day off to get some stuff finished-got mine done and boxed up-it'll go in the mail tomorrow. Hope the recipient likes it, I like the colors and the character with the hole in the blade. I knocked the blade out of a "boulder" of slag glass, handle is a piece of cholla cactus that I got from Cowboy (thanks, Paul!) with a burl maple cap on the end. There's a hole in the blade from a bubble in the glass(fun to run flakes through :) ). This one is 90% percussion, a little shy of 10" long overall.

WOW! thats a pretty one :)
-
Now thats one fantastic knife! Still waiting on the last knife so I hope its mine!!!! ;)
-
nice lookig knife hillbilly, that red on the tip makes it look like its already seen blood >:D
love the handle too, nice combo 8)
tim

hey it's Radius...
I want to apologize for being a lame-ass...i've been out of commission the last couple months, and my knives never got past the roughing-out stage...now i have no shop and i hang my head in shame for not being able to participate. Whoever i was supposed to send to: sorry, guys.
r
-
Instead of hanging your head in shame you could send the half finished knives to who you owe. Just send the unfinished knives as a "you finish it" kit.
-
Hillbilly that is one of the best looking knives I've seen..
-
Dang Hillbilly, that's a beauty. The combination is great. You got my address, right? ;D
John
-
Man I look at the work that you guys do and it never fails to amaze me just how talanted you guys are. It makes me feel embarassed to put in the bow that I put in, and then I see the talant you guys have. You guys should be very proud of your accomplishments.

Radius,
Who's names did you draw?
Tommy
-
Dang Steve thats purty, I got a line on where to get some slag glass but with winter closing in don't know
if I can get over there before freeze up.
-
Dana, I used to be able to get big boulders of it from a rock shop near here-all different colors. The last time I was there, the guy said he wouldn't be able to get any more than what he already had. I think he said he got it from the Fenton company or something like that, and they were going out of business. It's pretty cool material to work- the texture is waxy, more like tough obsidian or good dacite than regular glass.
-
Man Steve, that is one purty knife! The glass and cholla really go together - nice package overall. I have a box of that Fenton slag that I bought at a rock shop in Branson, MO. I bopped out a few rough blades but have yet to finish one - I am once again inspired ;D.

The stuff I have a line on is sitting on the shore of Lake Michigan at the site of old smelting plant that produced pig iron for shipment. Don't know if it will
any good or not. I really need to find some time before ice up.
-
That would be interesting Dana, show it if ya get some. Slag from an iron smelting operation - that might make some heavy points if it works.
-
Hillbilly,
Where did you get that Cholla cactus wood at. That is some awsome looking stuff :o! Are those worm holes or does it always look like that?
Tommy
-
Hillbilly,

Tommy
Tommy....that Cactus may be some that I traded or just sent to others....When Cholla Dies...the heart of the Cactus rots away....leaving behind the Tough Skeleton of the Plant....that is what you are looking at....the Structure that Holds the Branches and Limbs of the Cactus up....when dry this stuff is as tough as Hickory is...but light as a Feather.......
-
I got behind on my posting. I hate overtime. I have seen some nice knives so far. I especially like the cactus. I am going to have to get my hands on some of that stuff. Steve, you could have named it the Wholey Knife. ;D
-
Dana.......your talking Coal Slag (Clinkers) correct....like the kind you used to be able to pick up around the Old Coal Power Plants....or from Basement Furnaces that We grew up with?? The Black Shiny stuff........

I'm talking about Fayette state park slag Mike, they made pig iron ignots there due to to availability of limestone and the deepwater bay.
The slag is a byproduct from the process. Never dawned on me when hillbilly said slag that it was from a glass factory whenever I hear some one say slag
I always think of stuff up here.
-
Radius.. The easy way to make the loop of the trade complete !! Would be to take the knives you recived! from DanaM and sailordad and forward them to the ones you had drawn.. Wich are D.Tiller and woodsman1031.. And then all would be right with the world..
-
Hillbilly,
Where did you get that Cholla cactus wood at.
That was a piece that Cowboy sent me.
-
that's one way! i'm actually feeling much better about things now...
-
Hmmm, does that Crypted message mean the circle is going to be unbroken?
-
I went to the mailbox today and found a knife waiting for me. Thanks Steve. This thing looks even better in person. My wife had to tell me to quit jumping up and down. I was shaking the house. Can't help it, I'm a big boy. As soon as I get done squirrel hunting this evening, I am going to put the finishing touches on mine and get them out tomorrow evening. I know a couple people are have been waiting, but they will get there.
-
You are one, lucky, guy, Eddie. That knife is pretty.
-
My last knife is done but just need to make the sheath. When thats finnished it will be in the mail!
David
-
Eddie, glad you like it and that the PO didn't manage to mangle, break, fold, spindle, or mutilate it it between here and Boonville. ;D
-
I finally got them finished. Something always seems to go wrong when I am working on knives. Sometimes the steel will no cooperate, but I fought them tooth and nail. I used steel from an old sawmill blade about 1/8" thick after I removed a bunch of rust. I used some elk antler for the scales. They will be in the mail tomorrow, so Sailordad and Okie1, here are your knives.

Sorry about the pics, it was too dark outside. I had to heat treat and temper three times, quenching in cooking oil twice and finally in warm salt water before they were hard enough. The funny thing is that the blades that I cut from the other sides only took one quenching and they were right on. There are a few scratches, hammer marks and maybe some of my leftover DNA on them. They are fairly sharp, so don't cut your finger off.
-
I'm going to be a few days late on getting the last blade in the mail. Sorry, some things have come up here that have taken all my time. It is going out though!
David T
-
Nice work, Eddie. Good looking knives.
-
Very Very Nice!
-
Thanks Eddie, I'm sure they look great, but I'm here at work and can only see red X's. :( I'll check them out tonight.
John
-
dude them is just sweeeeeeeet man 8) ;D
thanks, when i get back from great lakes training facility i will be running to the mail box to see if it has arrived.
tim.
-
I hope you both enjoy them and get some blood ( not yours ) on them soon.
-
YAAAA HOOOO
got home from work today and checked the mail, all kinds of goodies where there waiting for me. not only did i have my package from 3R's,i also had a package
from madcrow, my new knife.
i am proud to own this knife, the photos really dont do it justice. i will hopefully finish up my bow this week, this week end my neighbor is taking me to a piece of land
his family owns and he said i could hunt on for the rest of the year,he said there aint no trophies on the land just a lot of meat.
ifn i shoot one its a trophy to me and i damn sure plan on using this fine knife that i own to gut and skin it with.
i will try and post pics of the knife if my wife gets home with the memory card.
the back edge of the knife has really nice detail on it, i didnt first notice what was there, it just looked like finger grooves or grips on the back edge, after about 10 mins of looking and holding i noticed how fine of detail work there really is, the four closest to the handle are all in the shape of arrow heads, really cool 8) looking.
thanks again madcrow
peace,
tim
-
I am glad you like it. Hopefully you will get many good years of use from it.
-
Got mine yesterday also. Thanks Eddie, it's great. It should last a life time. Like Tim said the pics don't do them justice. It's a heavy knife but balanced well in the hand. If I get a chance I'll put some more pictures up.
John
-
Hopefully one day when you are old and senile you will be able to tell your grandkids the some redneck from North Carolina made it for you. :D :D Glad you like it.
-
Anybody heard anything from Radius? I was just wondering if he had sent anything out.
-
Hopefully it will last longer than that... I'm pushin' the old and senile now. ;D
John
-
here are the 2 knives i received...thanks guys...the stone knife is from DanaM and the steel knife is from Sailordad...
very cool
-
Both of those look great!
What kind of wood did you use on that handle Sailordad?
Is that a whitetail antler DanaM?
Tommy
-
its called lepoard wood, an exotic species from the rain forest is what i was told atthe lumber yard.
all i know is that it is hard as nails, gives ya one hell of a cough if you dont wear a particale mask when working it. i learned the hard way
i still have some so i will probably use it for tip overlays, maybe another knife or two who knows
peace,
tim

woodsman the handle is elk antler :)

I thought this was about trading knives? ???
-
isn't that what we're doing?
-
I'm going to give everybody a heads up if we do this again. This all went off without a hitch with everybody getting great knives except for the two people picked by Radius. Not only is he going to keep the one's he got but might send two partial finished knives to the ones he drew.
It's people like this that ruin these kind of things and leave a bad taste in peoples mouths. When Madcrow called him out on this in a PM, his first reply was " Blow Me", nice guy, huh? I'd think long and hard about entering any kind of trade with Radius in the future.
Well you got your knives, Radius, hope you enjoy them.
-
Madcrow send me the name of one of radius' draws, I will be more than happy to send out a knife.
I won't have time to make one for at least a month but be assured I will get one made as soon as possible.
I can't stand the thought that people entered this in good faith and they are going to get screwed.
Well said eddie.
-
Ok I just talked with knightd and we have it covered :)
-
Thanks David and Dana. It will be greatly appreciated. Dang, I used a big word.
-
Dana, I have some made up that I could send out if you don't have time. Let me know.
John
-
Nice knives everyone !
Well i guess i have another name to add to my little black book >:(
-
Noted....I was not involved in this trade but I do follow these threads with great interest. Radius is added to the naughtly list...SHAME ON HIM!
Probably should check his participation on the Christmas thread too.... >:(
-
Long time no see stiknstring. How are things in Montana?
-
Dana, I have some made up that I could send out if you don't have time. Let me know.
John
That would be great John, I'm more than willing but am short on time right now :(
All I can say is what a great bunch of guys we have here, with one notable exception ;)
-
Mr Madcrow-
Things are pretty decent up here in the Big Sky State. I have been hella busy (mostl seems like I am running in place though). Kids jump from sport season to sport season and their dad must follow. I am trying to get a bow done for a nephew and another for a friend but just struggle to find time which is why I did not join the KITH or Christmas trade this year...if I cannot live up to my end then I just wont make the comittment, even though sometimes that is what spurs on action. Going hunting tomorrow (rifle season) to hopefully get some meat for my sister and her family. I don't really need it and they definitely do right now, times are hard for them. Hopefully I get one down so that I can spend this weekend hunting some rabbits with my son who is learning to handle a bow pretty well...how is your BIG boy doing. We should take this offline so go ahead and shoot me a PM buddy.
-
I should be able to mail one out in a couple of days. I have to make a sheath for it and don't want it to look like I hurried.
John
-
The one I am sending out will be next week. This sheath is going to wear my fingers to the bones. >:D >:D >:D I think he will like it though.
-
Thats great guys, we take of our own eh :)
radius I'm glad yer not in the Christmas Trade and not sure how you can live with yourself >:(
-
This is a great site with lots of good folks!! And with that said. One small splinter is not enough to bring a shadow over the spirit of this KITH! and the commorodery of everyone has proven this..
P.S. Radius I understand you got busy and lost your shop! But its ok Just Stay in the truck Bubba WE GOT THIS!!
-

i didn't just get busy: my life went all to hell! And it's not just that i lost my shop: i barely have a pot to piss in.
Some guys are being real jerks about this, and so I gotta say I appreciate you reminding them to think about the good stuff that came out of this. DanaM and Sailordad, I really like the knives you sent me. They are very cool and well made. I know you enjoyed making them and you enjoyed giving them away. The reason I was rude to madcrow is that he was rude to me in a PM.
You guys take care, and keep up the good work.
R
-
Sorry to here that your life went to hell but you still have an obligation to make good on your word.
A easy out was suggested to you, send the knives you received on to whe guys you drew, simple enough.
Hopefully things will get better for you.
-
i personally wont hold a grudge beacuse i have been in that sitsuation and its not fun or pretty.
radius i hope you enjoy the knife it was made for you so please keep it and i hope you dont feel bad cause sometimes things happen that you cant control.
if you want i can send the other knife that i made, just like the one i made for you, to one of the uys you drew. it will just take me a couple of days to make a sheath.
pm me and let me know.
i really hope things turn around for ya man. cause i know how that sucks, been ther done that more than once.
i know most here wont agree with me but hey cut the gut a little slack, because like a said sometimes things happen that you cant control and they can affect every aspect of our daily lives.
peace,
tim

The appropriate action would be to bow out gracefully by passing on the knives that were gifted to him to the people that he promised knives to....totally innappropriate to pass your own misfortune on to others. Just my two cents....and thats about what it is worth most of the time.
I am not bashing...just shaking my head in sadness over these actions because examples like this are what limit others from potentially joining the next one.
-
Neither of my pm's were rude. They were actually the polite version.
-
The only reason I'm sending out another knife to one of Radius' draws is because I feel i am blessed and if/when Radius gets back on his feet I think he will remember this. We are a family here and family takes care of family. At least were I come from. I agree Radius should send on the knives he recieved, but I am not in his situation and they may be all he has left. Just my 2 cents.
John
-
okie1
i totaly agree with what you said.
i have been contact with radius on this matter and hope he sands me a name and adress. because i too feel the same way and have been in that situation before.
never asked for help but also never turned it down when it was needed and offered to me. so now i am doing what i can, you know the karma thing.
peace,
tim
-
You guys are THE reason I love this board. Good folks helping good folks
-
i do what i can with what little i have been given if life ;D :D
peace,
tim
-
Hello,
Guys, I am not worried about not getting a knife from Radius. I appreciate yall thinking of me, but please dont feel like I am going to not participate again or anything like that. I dont expect anyone to send me a knife.
This is part of life, and I am NOT going to let it steal my sunshine ;D.
I understand that Radius has fallen on some hard times. I hope that everything works out for him in the future, I have NO hard feelings for him whatsoever. I am going to continue participating in every KITH and Christmas trade that I can on this forum.
Thanks
Tommy

Tiller, your knife is on it's way. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoy the one I got from you.
I can't post pics at work anymore, so if you could when you get it that would be great. If you can't I can post them from home.

well my kids came over this weekend and i showed them the knives you guys made. My elder son really loved DanaM's stone knife, while his little brother thought sailordad's steel knife was cool. He said, "Doesn't look very sharp," then proceeded to drag the blade across his thumb and cut himself! God, was that ever funny !!! (just a little cut) and for the rest of the day we made dumb jokes like, "That car's not going very fast" or "This gun ain't loaded"....

Glad you like the stone knife Scott :)

hi tommy,
i said i would send you a knife after i got a sheath put together for it. the knife itself is the very first one that i made,it was the protype of the one that i sent radius.
my leather skills are a little lacking and i am slow at it so thank you for your patience. i finally have the sheath finished and should be able to get it mailed out by this friday.
like i said the knife was my first one and does have some blemishes on the handle and blade, i call it character. i like this sheath better than the one that radius got ;D.
the blade has a 25 degree edge to it and is pretty sharp, atleast i think it is(took the hair off my arm).
i had used this knife before i knew you werent getting one. i used it to peel and entire apple stave and it kept a nice edge the whole time. i did resharpen it for you though.
please dont cut yor self with it.
i will try and post a pic so you know what to expect. ;)
the blade isnt polished as much as it looks in the pic,its from the flash.

Got the knife! It's a Beauty! Sorry, still have not had a chance to photo it. Just about have the sheath done for my last knife. Sorry again for taking so long. Trying to figure out a way to attach a shoulder sling type carrying device to it. Cant wait to go hunting with it! But in my case it may be a while. The women are SO demanding! "Where's my lotin! Where's my soap! Wheres my SALVE!!!!" Yada Yada Yada!!!! ;D

Looks pretty cool, looks like a short stabbing spear :)

I was kinda aiming for a skinning knife. But I guess it would work that way too. The blade, If I remember right, is red obsidian or pumpkin.
Glad you like it!
