What makes it a TUBE? Well, I'm heading out west to chase elk and am going to be riding horses in deep to base camp. The troubles of trying to take a long selfbow on a horse in the mountains has been on my mind. I have had a take down handle set kicking around in my to-do pile for some time and it seemed like a good time to try one. Yew seemed like the correct material for western elk, so...

I roughed out the billets and glued up the brass insert pieces fitted onto the ends. Fixed the top limb with a brass pin and filed the bottom brass till it slips right in. Glued on deer skin handle with leather built up rest. Tips are water buffalo for fast flight string.

I am mostly an osage guy living here in the mid west and have had a tough learning curve with yew (lots of exciting explosions) but I think I am starting to understand this material. This bow down right smokes and arrow. Look out Wapiti!

The billets were actually a half of a 5" diameter log 42" long. The rings are about medium for yew - not fine, not coarse - but it was nearly free of knots. It split cleanly lengthwise and took no set during tiller. My take on yew is that one has to be very careful tillering and sneak up ever so slowly on it.

Beautiful bow you have there. The tiller looks right on. I know what you mean by sneaking up on the tiller. I made kids bows out of a couple when the tiller came in quick. Good luck on the hunt.

Very nice bow and a very clean stave you had to work with. I've only made a few yew bows and love their light weight and the zip they have when shot. After working with and using osage bows, I hope I don't tear up my yew bow treating it like osage.    :o    Pat

Congratulations Shawn, That is a very nice takedown. You are right about yew it can be touchy sometime when tillering but you did great.  Glad to here your going for the elk with it. Are you planning on useing camo sleaves or something on the limbs?
