New to the forum just joined. I'm working on my first bow. It's going to be oak and bamboo, as soon as the bamboo gets here. Any hints would really help.

Yes take Dads advice and also remember that the Boo has to be thin....to make sure that it doesn't overpower the Oak Back.....

but yea this is all i have done right now.

keep it slow, every bow i have tried to rush to make has come in under weight with other issues like hinges etc.
patience is a virtue, that saying was meant for bowiers

I echo the above sentiments counseling patience. The verse from the Bowyer's Bible that has led my feet on the narrow path involves the bucket of cold water. Keep that 5 gallon bucket close by and any time you think you are ready to speed up and really get something done...go soak yer head!
Oh, and learn to professionally sharpen all your tools. In my shop if I don't feel a little pang of fear when I reach for a tool then the tool is not ready to go to work. My first (of many) underweight bows was when I was leaning heavily on a dull spokeshave while maniacally chanting, "I'll show YOU, stoopid tool!"
But the most important piece of advise will no longer do you any good. Don't start making bows, it's addictive.

An easier way??!! The only easier way I came up with was to buy a upright belt sander, and a band saw. Can you say bucks!! I knew you could. ;D Slow and constantly checking it is the only way to make sure it comes out ok.
-
I would use the fine side of a ferrier rasp, ..and when you think you got the bamboo thin enougth,...make it thinner !!!!
I would suggest you buy the Torges book too.
You need to get the bamboo down to the bow outline before you can thin it properly, and glue it up.
Did I mentioned it before ? ..make it thin :D :D :D ...it can be done
-
Easier? Yes a jointer. ;D
-
OK so i have the boo on the bow and started on the limbs. After class i will get some pic's up.
-
