I used a turkey tail feather to apply alcohol based die to my locust hunting bow. I was very pleased with the realistic woodland look of the result. Started with green, then black, then rust color. The yellow of the locust gave me four good colors. You just swirl the feather around and drag it and daub it.(http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm219/spiermo/camo%20on%20locust%20bow/hupaandcamo004.jpg)(http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm219/spiermo/camo%20on%20locust%20bow/DSC_0498.jpg)(http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm219/spiermo/camo%20on%20locust%20bow/DSC_0482.jpg)(http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm219/spiermo/camo%20on%20locust%20bow/DSC_0478.jpg)

Dan, that's just too cool.
-
Very cool. How long did it take?

Most impressive! I was trying to decide how to camoflage my new bow, and you posted that, very nice.

Thanks, everyone. It did not take long to do it at all. You do not have to be very careful. Just kind of free-wheel it, trying not to make any real big blobs of color and twisting and turning the feather to get different effects. You might practice on a piece of lumber and then do your bow and arrows. I was pleased with how the stain took to the river cane on the arrows also.

Hi Dan
Where can you get the dye?
Thanks Ronnie

Dan, what was the brand of dye you used, is it something that's readily available?
-
That is COOL! :o
What brand dye didya use, and what did you put over it if anything?
-
Nice camo job Dan - don't lay that thing down in the woods :).
-
Thanks, guys. I use a set of dyes from Tandy that is used for dyeing leather. They sell a set for about $30 that has about 12 different colors in it. I also buy some alcohol and water based stains from Woodcraft and Rockler woodworking stores from time to time. You can also use RIT dye mixed with water, or you can just mix up some acrylic paint and water it down and use it for a stain. Almost any paint or stain is just pigment powder added to some sort of medium like water, alcohol or latex. You can also make your own pigments as Billy Berger does it, using natural clays, fruits, and minerals. I will probably try to use all natural ingredients the next time I try this.

Very nice. I have been seeking a way to camo my next bow. Do you have any pics demonstrating your secret technique on a bow or board? If you ahve them I and I think others would really enjoy seeing them. T
-
T, I don't have any pictures demonstrating the technique, but just experiment; you can do it.

that is the coolest thing i ever seen when i read the subject i expected to see shoe polish blot on but that is amazing
-
If you hadn't said anything I would have thought that was Advantage Timber camo. That is awesome :)
-
That is way,way cool. What finish did you use over it ? Frank
-
I can imagine the Ooga-Booga crowd body painting themselves and running nekkid in the woods with that pattern. I wonder if I could do that pattern in a 4 inch wide strip down the side of my Isuzu Trooper, hehehe. Nah, then I couldn't find it again in da woods and have to walk home.
-
exellent effect, Im going to try it myself
-
That is really fantastic. If you had a video of t he process you could sell it!! Watcher
-
Thats awesome
-
Better watch out, that arrow looks like it'll hide under the leaves really well. ;D
Very neat idea. I might try it out.

Would be a good turkey season bow down here. I may try something similar but in more of a fall/grey scheme as I do more deer hunting/small game hunting than turkey. Very cool old thread.
-
That's really cool! Been wanting to Camo a bow for turkey hunting myself I may have to use that! Thanks Patrick.
