Here's a Vine Maple I just finished up. 50# at 26", 60" NTN, no overlays with a simple cordage grip.
Stained with leather dye and sealed with tru-oil. I've been working on this for a good year and half
it was seriously crooked, the tips were a good 5" outside the handle then throw in the knots and
whoop de dos and I was stumped for a long time so it sat in the corner of shame. Finally I felt up to the task
so I steamed it and got the tips about 3" closer, then 3 more sessions with the heat gun and while not centered
the string is on the handle. Pulled one splinter while straightening it but managed to remove it by some side tillering.
While the tiller looks stiff in the outer third of the limb they are bending and for a problem stave I'm happy with it.
Shoots hard and fast and overall I'm impressed with Vine Maple. Now who has a straight piece to trade :)
Will be giving this one away also haven't decided yet but its between two people :) Comments good or bad welcome.

Looks good Dana. The f/d pic pointing left looks like you have a more even bend thru out. Nice dye job too. Someone is gonna be a lucky recipient! 8) Pat
-
Very nice Dana, Congratulations on your crooked stick success ;) Love the dye job, character and very nice profile. Looks like a slight R/D. I'm sure whoever ends up witb it, will fall in love with it. Glad to see a yooper venturing into the realm of the dips, dives, and turns of VM. ;D Aagin very nice bow ;)
-
Nice job, Dana! Making those character bows is sure a lesson in patience, eh? I'm havin' fun with it! I've got another yew selfbow on the go at the moment. Hope to get it done in the next month, or so.
-
Seems like all I work on is crooked wood lately ;)
Pat I agree with you the FD pointing left is the better side :)
Thanks Keenan just go ahead and send me a VM stave along with some of that rock you picked up ;)
Where ya been David I've posted 2 bows fairly recently :)

SWEET! Great looking bow for such a challengeing piece of wood. I think the tiller looks real good , Dana.Like the dye job, too.
-
Mike Trenary Toast for Vine Maple ;D (Inside joke for you non yoopers)
Thanks eddie, as ya can see winter has arrived so be on the look out for old Yoopers heading down yer way ;)
-
Nice bow dad, i sure could use something like that down here, to stick pig, or a deer on base! And as for that snow... :( god i hate the south even more now that i see its already on the ground back home!!!!!!!!
-
Thanks Kyle I keep giving bows away but I haven't made you one yet, whats up with that eh :P
Perfecting my technique son ;) Don't wory I have a piece of osage with yer name on it :)

Dana - What a beauty, That is a wicked piece of wood to make such a nice bow out of. Tiller looks great. You did an awesome job on that one. I guess that's it for green ground until June. ;D
-
Very nice bow Dana, love the die job,I like crooked wood. ;)
Pappy
-
Good Job, Dana. Bookmarked, too, eh!
-
Very cool...really like the color. No frills....just the way I like 'em. Nice job Dana. 8)
-
Thanks for the kind words guys :)
-
Now who has a straight piece to trade
That's funny Dana ;D.
The bow turned out really nice. Is it bending through the handle? How wide did you make the limbs?
-
Gordon its 1.25" wide and yes its bending thru the handle, I'm really impressed with VM its extremely tough and forgiving
By straight I mean one that the tips are almost lined up :P, had a heck of a time getting this one to line up. Ya know if VM
took heat like osage no one would bother with that orange stuff :o
-
DanaM, nice bow. You've been a busy bee lately. Just saw your arrows a few minutesago. Can'tbelieve you're standing in snow.
-
Dana,
I've had really good luck steam bending vine maple, but you can hardly get it to move using dry heat. If vm didn't have so may grain swirls that make for miserable scrapping I might put it up there with osage.
-
Good lookin bow there Dana ! I had some of that white stuff on the ground Saturday morning, but it was gone by the evening :P
-
Well if you insist go ahead and send it.Seriously great looking bow. Ronnie
-
I think it looks great. I like the unbraced profile, the dye job and the tiller.
-
John the snow melted today but where I'm hunting theres 3" and go another 20 miles north and theres almost a foot of snow :o
Thanks cracker but the draw is to short for a big guy like you :D
Thanks Shannon, I also like the tiller its no dog gets the arra moving pretty quick :)
-
Very nice Dana. I would like to try Vine maple some day. How does it like heat? Danny
-
Very nice Dana. I've got to learn how to use dye like you guys. I've got work to do in that category but you've got her mastered.
-
Sidewinder as Gordon said it steams pretty good but does not bend real great with dry heat although it did respond nicely to belly toasting.
Thanks Jimmy, as for the dye job I'm certainly no master, I just used ox blood red fieblings on the tips, dark brown on the rest and then dabbed some
black on with a feather, after it was dry hit it lightly with 220 grit and sealed, Be safe over in Afghanistan eh.
-
Good job Dana, I like the dye scheme. :)
-
Nice stick eh, Dana. ;D I got some VM billets from Gordon that I need to do something with.
-
Thanks Greg and Ryano, its good wood ryan, not osage but its real nice stuff :)
-
Very nice job on a challenging stave, thats what this all about! Love the tiller on that bow. Steve
-
that things cool! you'r getting preaty good at making them uncle dana. i'm thinking i'm not taking winter classes so i'll have to set up a visit for early next month, let me know what ya think.
-
C/Mon Josh.....it's what 60 miles............I'd be up there every weekend if I had someone that close that was this good to learn from!!! I drove 1600 miles to shoot some arrows with Him this Summer....and I will be back again this coming Summer to do even more
-
Steve, coming from you that is a compliment indeed :)
Josh, just call and get yer but up here, you going to camp for the opener this weekend?
Mike looking forward to another visit from ya, did you know that the local Wal-Mart doesn't sell Trenary toast :o
-
Well......I guess I will have to take me a Supply from Ishpeming when I come.....and buy a few extra for You!! I know how cranky I get with a Cup of Coffee....without Da Trenary Toasts fer dunkin!!!!
-
Mike I'm going to check the local grocery store, I hardly ever shop there as everything is about 25% more expensive
but I bet they have Trenary Toast :) Hoping to make the Trenary Outhouse races this year also, man what hoot they are ;D
BTW pasties for supper tonight :)
-
yup heading up friday after work (get there around 6) and staying till tuesday. mollys little sister is hunting this year so she's going to be with till sunday. anything going on thanksgiving? i think my mom and dad are going to camp. i gotta bed i gotta build soon, and the house is just about all moved in now ( i even got to set up the shop a little) theres a few things to put away yet. 3 weeks left of classes till finals. then i should have a bunch more time. but gotta get to class test day. talk to ya later.
-
My turn to say great job, Dana. The snow, however, yuck. I hate that stuff more than Brussel spouts.
Rick showed me a vine maple he made, at the last New Engand primitive gathering, and it was a beautiful weapon. That is the only experience I have had with vine maple.
My only criticism, and this is just me, but I wish you had left the wood natural. But red works too :) Humans have been using red for decoration since the dawn of humanity, after all. It is a power color, and strong magic, some would say.
Dane
-
Josh good luck hunting eh :) If you and Molly want to come up for Thanksgiving your more than welcome, I cook
a pretty good Turkey ;D Give me a call eh. Actually this bow is yours but ifin ya want it you have to come and get it ;D
Hope ya like it Josh because once you shoot it you will toss yer compound in the burning barrel, so ya better get up here
before I change my mind :o ;) :)
-
Dane Thanks buddy as for the color I let my creative juices flow and thats what I ended up with ::)
Giving it to my nephew(escanabajosh). I'm pretty damn proud of him :)
-
I should talk, I always seem to want to color wood.
Stay warm, and happy Thanksgiving ahead of time. I envy a bit you guys with lots of family for the holidays, but having a quiet day and only cooking for the wife and pug only is also nice, plus a spirit or two that have to be remembered, but they don't actually eat.

I bet Davenport can eat a whole turkey ;D Happy Holidays Dane
-
She happily would. She is the most glutonous creature ever, a walking stomach with a wrinkly face attached to one end. Her nickname is little piggy. We love her anyway.
Happy T day to you, and to all you other guys, too.
Dane
-
thanks uncle dana!! ;D :o ;D :o i cant wait to shoot her.
i was in class when ya called. my final exams are the 3rd of december so i'll be up there some time soon after. i'll give ya a call from camp if my phone works , might have to use mollys mines on it's last life. thanks again uncle dana.
-
Good luck on yer exams Josh and good luck hunting eh :)
-
A very beautiful and nice bow.
side note: your bow shoulder is collapsing. Push it out, and that should get your shoulders in-line when you're at full draw.
-
Shamus thanks for the compliment and the advice, my bow shoulder is in bad shape from breaking it
and then a botched surgery >:( I need to go see a good orthopedic surgeon but am hesitant after
one doctor already screwed up :'(
-
I hear Ya ....Dana.....thats why I still have all of the Screws and Plates in My Leg.....really dont want to go back uncer the Knife again.....if at all possible!!
-
Really sweet lookin' bow I like the dye job and full draw pics, well done. Hammertime.
-
Dana, did you really use "vine maple" and "straight piece" in the same breathe? ha.
Looks good!
-
Thats what I was thinking too Mike....dana wants His Cake and Eat it Too!!!!!
;D >:D ;)
-
I'm sure there is better VM out there than piece, once againn by straight I mean relativly straight with the tips at least closer
to aligned than this one was :)
-
Just picking at ya .....Dana.....I think Santa may have found you one....better be Nice.....Ya know He's checking His List.......... ;)
-
I'm always nice ::)
-
Dana,
ouch, sorry about the shoulder.
