Title: Future breakfast sausage!
Post by: GregB on December 06, 2008, 12:32:56 pm
I hunted behind my house Thursday afternoon and passed a shot on a small buck...3 or 4pt. I would guess. Friday morning Jimmy (RangerB) and I went to a farm he was kind enough to invite me to hunt with him on. Although I didn't see a deer, I saw a lot of sign. We had  a couple of guys walk by Jimmy without permission and I'm sure that affected the hunting. I didn't go Friday evening, but decided to go this morning. I had two young ones come by me that I'm sure I've passed shot's on a couple of times this year already. The larger of the two I was sure was a button buck, the smaller a doe...I thought. I decided to take a shot on the smaller deer and had already let the larger one by probably 20 lbs. or so walk by at 12 yards. I was using a osage bow Pappy gave me (one I took the 8pt with), and a cane arrow that Sawfiler had given me when he was hunting with us at Pappy's. The arrow flew great, but it wasn't one of my better shots...about 10 yards and a steep angle. It was a neck shot and the deer didn't go but about 20 yards or so. I found out after getting down that it was a little button buck as well, but I couldn't tell it from the tree stand. In Tenn. a small buck with antlers under 3 inches is considered a doe from a tagging standpoint. I plan to mix pork with the venison along with the seasoning and some liquid smoke and make sausage with it. ;)

Nice deer Greg. I'd of ground up that buck for sausage and kept that little bugger for steaks and chops and such. Them little ones are always better eating.

Awesome Greg.  You're on a late season roll.  Glad to see that food plot is paying off.  See if I'd have been chasing your squirrels you'd be deerless this morning  ;D
I'll be back at it Monday morning.  This is my last week so I hope to get one more.

Thanks Ryan, yeah it would be some tender meat for sure...just don't know if I'll get any more opportunities and I'd like to make some sausage. The late season hunting is pretty tough with all the leaves off.

Shannon, your trade point did really good, was sticking in the ground after passing through the deers neck. I noticed when practicing with it what you said about it rotating...I could tell it rotated when pulled from the target. I got it good and sharp before it went in my quiver...thanks!

Thank you Jimmy and enjoyed hunting with you the other morning! I hope you can get another one before you have to leave.

Appreciate it armymedic.2, we have so much venison at the club already that I think the breakfast sausage is something different we'll enjoy. ;)

Congratulations on another one , Gregg.

When I hunted that mngt Area in NW Kentucky a few years ago, we couldn't shoot anything but bucks that were 14" or better. I had 3 real close shots on bucks that had real short spikes that I wouldn't shoot at. I didn't know any better and thought they were Bucks.

In Ky, any deer with visable antler pertruding above the skin is considered a buck, or antlered deer, except  a button buck.
Buttons are to be checked in as male/antlerless. ;)

Thanks Chad!

Patrick, I've been making bratwurtz with 2/3 venison and 1/3 pork for several years now with very good results also. Used to make a lot of jerky, but haven't done that in a while.

Greg,

Are you planning on coming to LBL this year?  We sure missed you last year.  We have 6 yanks coming down this year and we're towing a cargo trailer.  We're thinking of looking for some real estate.  Maybe not looking at your weather this week.  It's as cold there as it is here!  Lets hope it warms up a bit.  I like hunting in 50's and 30 rather than 20 degrees.

Glenn

Hi Glenn, yeah I'm planning to come this year...may not stay the entire time. Anthony and I scouted this past Sunday and it seems like the farmers left more standing corn then in the past. We found sign of the deer leaving the thickets and heading into the corn...good evening hunting for sure. We marked a couple of trees for stand locations. If you guys would bring some lock-on stands and hunt the edge of thickets/corn fields, you could probably take good advantage of what the deer seem to be doing this year. Get in quiet and above their eyes and nose as best you can! ;)

Did you get a look at the soy bean fields off of 201 above the Prior Creek Area where you hunted a few years ago?  I was looking at the topo this morning and thought that might show some promise.   It's good to hear about that corn.

I have been watching your progress all season.  Both you and Pappy have had super years!  Maybe some of the good fortune will rub off.  This is the year the Yankees get one.  At least the numbers will be in our favor.

See you soon,

Glenn

Yeah Glenn, Anthony and I scouted that bottom behind the Home Place...I think that's the one you're talking about. We're probably going to hunt the back right corner on either side of the power line. There is standing corn along the edges closer (less walking) then where Anthony and I are going. I think Gary hunted in that area last year some. There was a lot of corn across the road from the cemetary in front of where the tall towers are where they used to raise eagles when they were being reintroduced to the area 25 years or so ago. We found good sign where the deer were crossing the creek to access that corn. We marked a good tree there at the creek crossing where a lock-on stand could be put up. I think anywhere on any of the roads where corn is standing in the fields would be a good place to look for sign.

I know right were you mean.  I hunted at the creek end of that field last year year and had some action with a yearling buck and a flock of turkeys.  Anthony always seems to do well at the far end of that field. The topo shows some nice draws on the northwest side of the field by Prior Creek.  That might be good in the am.  I did also scout the field by the eagle's nest last year.  I have some sites marked in the GPS.

I do want to scout the ridge above that field the LBL maps show a large field of soybeans up there this year.

You have gotten me real excited this year about the prospects!

Glenn
