Title: Gift for a Friend
Post by: knightc71 on December 31, 2008, 10:17:41 pm
This is the second set I have made,( all by Myself. ;D ) and I am very proud of them! I made these for a friend. I hope they like them. They are tonkin cane, they are weighed within 20 grains of each other and fletched with hand split and ground turkey feathers. The cock feather is from a domestic turkey with a unusual colorization. They are wraped with artifial sinew and stained with leather dye. The finish is wipe on type poly. I hope you enjoy them. Please let me know what you think..

Ok I see that not everyone has looked at who posted these !! This is my wife's post..  I would love to say that I had a hand in these but the only credit I can take is that I helped her with learning how to straighten shafts and such.. SHE built this set all on her own.. She refused to even let me give suggestions on these.  Looks like I'm going to ask her for help on my next set.. ;D.. She is a fast learner..Of course this means I don't catch any crap for ordering shafts.. ;)..

Those are really beautiful.  I think David has a plan....Teach his wife to make all of this beautiful stuff so he can get hunting more. ;).  Really nice arrows.  I think I would put those on display.

Wow !....Nice.  That makes me want to teach my wife how to make 'em,Just think,I will just have to put my order in anytime I need a batch and wa la  arrows. It would be like having an arrow fairy living in your house. Now all I got to do is figure out how to get her to do it. I am persistent but ,not necessarily bright. Can I get some help here ?  Any idea's ..?   Frank

Yep, Rick beat me to it. Beautiful arrows, Cora. If I could get my wife to make arrows like that I could quit trading with Cade. Is that some of that Tonkin from down my way?

Beautiful!  Knightd, you are indeed a lucky man.  Oh sorry, I forgot those are for a " Friend " not for the Old Man!   ;D  A very lucky friend indeed.  Cora, those are beautiful.  And as was asked previously, what are the nocks made of?

Thanks guys!!  I really appreciate all the positive input.  The nocks are self-knocks that I cut in just above the node.  When I stained the arrows, I decided to leave the knocks natural.  I thought that would really make them stand out.  As I said before, thanks so much for the positive input.  All you guys really know how to make a person feel good!! ;)

Sorry mullet, but these are from another batch.

The only ideas I can give you guys that want your wives to do this is, unfortunately, it is all up to her whether she would enjoy something like that.  I have always enjoyed making things with my hands, but never found anything that I really liked doing until now.

Hey Billy, when is your birthday?? ;)

I got these so straight by using a single gas burner and slowly warming them.  Then I take a tool that my husband made for me and slowly straighten the area that is crooked.  I also use a half moon shaped piece of hickory that he made for me too.  The hickory is used to straighten in between the nodes and the tool is to used to straighten around the nodes and the nodes themselves.  Of course the tool is also used to get those little crooks out as well.  And last but not least,  A WHOLE LOT OF PATIENCE!!!!! :P :-\

Could you show a picture of the half moon tool?

Ahhh yes......very clever.  Pretty darn spiffy.  8)   Secret?  Ha, there are no secrets here.  This is where we share the secrets, which of course then cease to be secrets, except for the non traditional people. "  How do we get these shoots, and cane so straight?  We just look for the straightest ones we can find.  Haven't you ever seen a shoot nice and straight?  No secret to it. "
Very neat tools.  I like the node straightener, because you can use one hand, and then hold a heat source in the other, or beer.  These would be good to pack in your back pack, with some knapping tools, and some fletching.  In in case you come across some uh straight shoots...... ;D
Now, I can see how you made such beautiful arrows.  But why is he bending one?  I thought he was going to sit back now, and let you be his arrowmaker...... ;D I guess he should've know that now you are going to keep making your "OWN" arrows, just to keep him trying to match yours.  Now you have to start knapping.  That should keep him busy.  Thanks, those are pretty cool, and again, beautiful work on those arrows.  Did he come up with the idea for those tools, or did you, or someone else.  Thanks for sharing the " Secret "

The tools are realy not a secret.. Ive heard of guys using 5gal buckets and such to bend the shaft over. I just made one to sit in your lap..
Title: Re: Gift for a Friend
Post by: knightc71 on January 03, 2009, 03:20:00 pm
What I like about the piece of hickory, is that I can heat the whole section between nodes and not have to worry about breaking the shaft.  When he cut the hickory, I had him elongate the radius so that I can do the whole section between the nodes.

He's not actually straightening that one.  He's just showing how it works.  He did actually come up with the ideas for the tools.  He wanted to make it easier for me to do this!!!  You know what that means??!! :D  He really wants me to pump them out!!!!! :D :D

Well just pump them out, and into " YOUR" quiver! ;D

I'll see if I can get him to make you one, Dana!!

Thanks Zander!  If it wasn't for my husband I would have never gotten into this.  It really makes me happy to finally get to make things with my hands.  I have always enjoyed making things for other people, but just never really found what I liked until now.  It's great!!!

Sorry Billy, but I can't make them everyday!!  I have another job to do too!!!

Dana, I'm very glad that you like the arrows.  It's just a small token of my appreciation for the maple stave that you sent me.

David helped me rough it out today and I will be working more on it this week and even more this weekend.  (Weather permitting!!)  I will start a build along on the bow.  Well, IF I'm able to pull it off, it will be a bow!!! ;D

If that bow turns out anything like those arrows, it will be more than "a Bow" !!  And speaking of arrows, hmmm, I wonder when Dana goes to work, and if he has an alarm system...... ;)

Ok, Dana, you can have the arrows!  I don't want two savage Yorkies, acting like a couple of sewing machines on my little skinny legs, or a wild Yooper Woman from the Great White North, blasting away, with a shotgun, as I am trying to run in the snow, with just my tenner shoes for traction.     So have you shot them yet?  The arrows, not the Yorkies.  Or you just sitting there petting them?  The arrows, not the Yorkies.  So what does the Wife have to say, about you get'n gifts from anutter woman eh?  Better tell her, dat you had her ship dem to you so dat ya could send dem to me, fer a Chrismus gift, and so den maybe you should get busy and get dem in da mail hey? ;D ;D ;D

Hmmm, chocolate isn't the answer huh? Dang!  No romance novels either?  Dang!  Well you may have a point about the snow, so how about making a deal with the wife, and have her shovel a shooting lane, in the snow, while you finish up the living room......sounds like a fair deal to me.   Think she will go for that? Oh, and don't let her see these posts.  I think it would be better if she thought you came up with such a great idea. ...... ;D ;D

Ah man, Perch AND Walleye?!!  Man, you are going for the Gold!
Well I hope she is happy with how the paint turns out, and doesn't decide, that maybe the other color would have been better......
Well enjoy those arrows, and the Perch, and Walleye.  I have never had Walleye, but one of my Buddies, in Montana, is from Mich. and he just raves about walleye.  But none the less, keep the Wife happy, cause as the saying goes, if Mama ain't happy, ain't nobody's happy!  So have a beer with the fish, and enjoy petting those arrows, they sure are pretty.   ;)They would even make a nice wall display, when not stuck in a big ol U P buck! :)
