This thread is devoted to posting pictures of arrows (individual or sets). Hopefully, those who were not able to post last time will post this time....and those who have limited time will be relieved to know that they can post single arrows if they wish.
Basic rules:
1) Three Categories: Primitive, Neo-primitive and Modern.
2) Minimum of three pictures: Overall view and two close ups.
3) Tell us what category you wish to participate in.
4) Tell us how you made the arrows and what they will be used for.
Primitive arrows must be made of natural materials. You can gather these yourself if you wish but buying/trading for them is OK too. Using modern tools is OK (but using stone tools might get you more kudos). The arrows can be made of anything that was available before the year 1900. Primitive arrows do not have to be reproductions.
Neo-primitive arrows look primitive but are made from modern materials or a mix of primitive and modern materials.
All other arrows are considered modern.
The arrows will not be judged on performance. They will be judged on workmanship. This means that they can be wall-hangers, hunters, or whatever. If they are reproductions, they should be judged on how closely they match the originals. Again, they don't actually have to be working arrows.
OK, to start this thread off, I will post some of my own arrows that I have made recently. The first two are reproductions (primitive). The upper arrow is a southern plains style with elk bone arrowhead wrapped with sinew and glued with fish glue. The arrowhead resembles a Cahokia type. The feathers are goose and turkey wrapped with deer rawhide lacing (made from "stinky rawhide" in another post ;D). The leading edge of the wrapping has been sanded down to create a smooth transition. The shaft is red osier and the blue stain is laundry bluing. They are intended for display but are fully functional. They are spined for 70# @ 20" draw.

The lower arrow is a northern plains style with steel arrowhead wrapped with sinew and glued with fish glue. The feathers are goose wrapped with sinew. The shaft is red osier and the paints are made with red and yellow ochre with shellac as a binder.

These next pictures are of a set that I'm making for Auggie. They are neo-primitive. I promised this set months ago and her we are....already January. Sorry Auggie...thanks for being patient. ;D
The arrowheads are stainless steel wrapped with jewelry wire and black thread. The feathers are white and grey goose wrapped with black thread. The shafts are privet shoots. They are spined for 55# at 28" and weigh between 688-692 grains each.

Neo-primitive arrows look primitive but are made from modern materials or a mix of primitive and modern materials.
I think that is right?
The bamboo came from Markinengland and is Chinese Arrow bamboo. I cut self nocks just above the nodes on the cane with three blades taped up.
The points are screw in heads that you could use in al or carbon arrows.
The feathers are hand picked from geese,cut to shape 5in long.
Then glued on and bound with artificial sinew.
They will be used to shoot at clouds,trees,the ground. And all those other things we pro archers shoot at......

As for the leather wrap....it's thin deer rawhide. I cut the strip on the bandsaw when the sinew was dry, then sanded off the frayed edges, then soaked the rawhide in water for maybe an hour, applied a little fish glue to the shaft and rawhide, then wrapped the fletching. After it dried overnight, I sanded the leading edge so it wouldn't bump against my bow hand.

These would be Neo primitive.. Tonkin cane fletched with goose and a turkey cock feather wrapped with atrifical sinew..Self knocks..

Heck, I don't see why you couldn't post an atlatl dart or two....maybe some blowgun darts?

well i wouldnt call this my best arrow... but its one that i built over the week-end to send to a friend that i'm sending a few green privot shoots for him to try out.... i wanted to send him an arrow soo that he could see that it would work to make arrow out of privot i'm sure this is not a great arrow... but i am found of it and i thought it would be worth sending and even posting... hope ya'l like it... its from privot shoot i collested in my local woods here in dallas about 3-4 weeks ago... and i put a "wanna be" stone point on it... i dont know how to knap sooo dot laugh but its just a flake that i tried to pressure flake close enought to call it a point...lol... i made a self knock on it but used all modern tools... and i used modern glue for the tip and wraped it in nylon strands that i un twisted from a twist nylon string from the fishing department from walmart if you untwist the string it turns into many fibers of nylon that almost looks like hair... i than coated the fiber wrap with some superglue to help hold it all togather... soooo i guess this is a neoprim... but i thoought it came out ok...

COOL! 8) Looks like the nylon string worked pretty good. Keep making 'em.....believe it or not they get easier. ;D

Mine are way too ugly to put up against any of these.But here we go any ways.
These are some from a few month back. Mostly primitive all hafting is sinew or cordage, some liberties have been taken with the decoration( shapies). All turkey feathers, some modern points.
Will post new ones as I make them

They are a mix of cane and meadow sweet shoot shafts. The ones in the last picture are multi purpose. I use them for stumpin , targets and critter getters.

It's probally hunting season in Florida, only, still. Most people won't need them till next fall. I'm going hog hunting for a week Feb 9. But I have over 300 arrows, ;D

They aint real purty but are solid functional neo primitive arrows.

Ya'll do some fine work .Here are a set of mine from last year. Cane shafts dyed with poke berries .Goose fletches ,horn nocks and points ,and everything mounted with hide glue and sinew ,with bit o' pine tar on top.

This is a set of red osier arrows I made for a trade with Minuteman(Chris). He wanted a Plains style so this is my version. The fletching are turkey. I used fletch tape to hold down the feathers and added a sinew wrap fore and aft. The trade points are hafted with pitch glue and sinew wraps. All wraps and the shafts are sealed with pitch varnish. The cresting is earth pigments. I made glue water with Elmer's glue and water and mixed the earth pigments with that. The decorative feathers are Guinea foul from the fly tying shop. Nocks are self nocks.
I only had 5 trade points so I used an obsidian head that Justin made for that one arrow. The fletching on tist arrow were glued down, after tying, with liquid hide glue. This one came out OK but others didn't so I opted for the fletch tape.
I guess these are considered neo-primitive

Thanks Rick. I guess I could have used hide glue water as a carrier for the pigments but the Elmer's was close at hand and I am basically lazy. ;D

I think I got you beat on lazy I use the acrylic matte medium to mix the prim. pigments. I never thought of using the Elmers. That is a good idea.

Rick, If I had the matte medium I would have used it. My wife is an artist and lately has been doing paper mache so we have lots of Elmer's.

Sounds like you look to get in the same trouble as me. Using the wife's art supplies. Sometimes that can make you a pretty unpopular guy around the house. :o

This set was part of a order I made for 2 dozen self-nocked cedar arrows (spined for 50 lbs) that were footed on both ends with purple heart hard wood. I ended up ordering spliced feathers but I spliced the cock feathers myself and fletched the set too. The shafts were coated with pencil coating before being fletched. The points came from 3 rivers. Sorry about the quality of the photographs.

This was the 2nd set of arrows that I made from the footed shaft batch. This time I painted along the footing lines on the front of the arrow. After finishing the paint job it was covered by Pencil coating. The feathers were ordered spliced and I put them on in a four feather configuration and tied them off with red silk which was then waxed. The bodkin points came from Ebay.

this is the final set of arrows made from the orginal footed shaft batch. I failed to mention that these are used for a medieval archery demonstration once a year for the forth grade at my daughter's school. These are made essentially the same way as the other two except I have exanded on the spriral paint job and I haven't used silk to tie it off. Enjoy.

This was my attempt to reconstitute a broken arrow. I panited it and put a six feather fletch on it then put a whistling point on the end. The kids love it.

Last one I promise. This was made into a whistling arrow also except I used flu flu feathers in a four fletch configuration and tied it off with silk. Not the flaming whistle point.

I forgot. I guess you need to put me into the neo-primative class on all the sets because I tied off many of the points with artificial sinew.

Albren, My goodness you do some VERY fine work!!! I was making a set to enter, but not after seeing your work. No way I can compete with that! I love your painting and footed shafts. Thanks for sharing.

By all means please post. Remember my arrows were not entirely made by me. I basicaly just assembled them. The hard part (making the shafts) was done by a real craftsmen whom I ordered them from. Since I assembled and painted them, I've found out that the fletching and the footed shafts are not historically accurate either. It's OK though because the kids don't seem to know the difference. Maybe one day I'll make a real medival set after I can afford a real yew English Long Bow too.

Here's a couple of Cherokee-style arrows I made a while back. Completely primitive. Shafts are native river cane sealed with bear grease. Two-feather wild turkey fletch tied down with deer sinew, flint points hafted with pine pitch and deer sinew.

The whole set spined at 40 - 45 pounds. I used modern glue and fly line backing to tie them one.

Here are some neo modern. Red oak dowels, barrel tapered, with a mix of real and atrificial sinew, self knocks, modern tips.

They all spined in at 50# and weigh from 520 to 545 grains.

OK, here is another set of neo modern. I sanded some bamboo down to spine 50 to 55# and the weight ranges from 520 - 580 grains. They have modern aluminum insert glued in. I used real and artificial sinew, one has an antler tip and all have self knocks.

These are a set of 4 modern Flu-Flus for roving made from northern pine shafts of a 75# spine, fluorecent yellow feathers combined wild turkey feathers and the most traditional plastic nocks I could find ;D ;D ;D ; hope you like them anyway, they do fly very good!

David, this idea was discussed (in the initial planning stage) and it was determined that the "Best Arrow" contest could not be run like the B.O.M.. The best solution we came up with was to have an impartial judge count the votes and post the results. Maybe later, if this thing gets bigger, we could run it like B.O.M.? It's all up to the admin's.... :)

Nice job fellows,Too me , no one arrow is better than another, as no two are excactly alike. All take precious time to build, but it is so nice for you to share your creations.Keep building we all enjoy the past, and what a better way to step back in time. Denny
