Title: Things you don't see in Ky... But you might in Florida
Post by: FlintWalker on March 24, 2009, 09:45:21 pm
The first picture is dedicated to Eddie, my tour guide ;D   He played tourist long enough for me to get the picture. :o

The second pic is a Mexican eagle (I think).   Eddie says he's been trying to get a picture of one for a while... I didn't have any trouble ::)

Then there's the hogs.  I never saw so many hogs in my life!  It seemed like everywhere I went, I saw hogs.
We killed a few the first couple days we hunted. But after that, we had turkeys on our minds.  I shot one with Eddies pistol and he killed one with a rifle and one with buckshot.  Every day I hunted I had opportunities to shoot hogs. Some as close as 5 or 6 yards. 8)

That's IndianCharlie (Charlie Parrish)  with a nice Osceola gobbler he killed. He called it in with a bamboo trumpet call.

These next pictures are some of the other wildlife I managed to catch with the camera.  On top of all these. I saw river otters, coons, deer, rabbits, a bobcat, a couple of snakes and several other birds and lizards.
Lots of interesting critters running and crawling around down there.
The only alligator I saw, just had his nose stuck out of the water and didn't make a good picture. >:(

And finally...Here's a few picture of some of the scenery.  This terrain is a loooong way from what I'm used too.
The first picture is of a palmetto thicket.  This stuff goes for acres and acres.  Some places for miles and miles!  If you shoot something and it makes it into this stuff, there's a good chance it's gone!  The stems on this stuff has a row of teeth down each side like a course hacksaw blade and would do a number on your legs if you went very far into it.
The rest are just pictures of the scenery.

Destructo, I didn't get lost ::) I just took the long way around and didn't make it to the gate on time.  It was all fun anyway. ;D
What turkeys Eddie?  There's no turkeys around there... ::)  Oh!  You mean the one I missed with that gun of yours. ;)  I think the barrels crooked on it.  You need to take it to a gunsmith and get it checked out.

That ol' Winchester is kinda wore out. There was always the 10 gauge, or Beretta. I think what we needed was less cold front and wind.

Oh well...Sometimes you get 'em, sometimes you don't.  I have to say. That was about as much fun as I've ever had trying though.
I WILL KILL AN OSCEOLA someday. Just not this year.  :)

One thing I have to say, is Shannon is one hell of a hunter. He hunted his butt off in 80 degree weather in something he wasn't used to. This kind of enviroment can be a shock for people that are used to seeing a hill for a landmark. Down here you have to memorize the horizon outline of trees so you can navigate in the dark or find your way back to camp in the daytime. These turkeys don't gather in the same field everyday or gobble all the time. You have to hunt for them or just sit and call. Most of the time they are o the move looking for hens, and these boys have been after them since late December. Some hens have Polt's right now.
We had some birds coming from over a mile away, and they might gobble and let you know,  that it would take two hours if they weren't distracted. And Osceolas' have no problem about diving off or coming out of that thick palmetto, or wading water , unlike Easterns.
When he comes back next year, I have no doubt Shannon will get one, heck, I might have a "Bessie" for him. ;)

AHH! We did have fun, Pat. There was a lot of fun conversation every night on the screened in porch sipping a few while dinner was cooking. We were so close to Okeechobee , that we had a nice sea breeze blowing like you were at the beach.

Looks like a great time. Ive been to Florida a few times and the natural areas there are cool. Very different from up north. Tourism is out of hand there and Ive heard some locals like it better in the summer when us northerners leave because we cant take the heat ;D. Florida must have been a really great place back in the day. Looks like you guys know all the good spots. I really wanna hunt pigs there someday.

Jesse, no offence, but we really do like it when all ya'll go home. The PARKS CLOSED for the SUMMER. ;D This was a great place to live till Walt had his Dream. Now it's turned into a nightmare. Where we are hunting is one of the few places that is still old Florida and it is also where they want to put a new connecting highway in to go north and join the Interstate near Disney :(. If they do, it will not be long before it is developed, too.

No offense taken. I wouldn't want it to happen in my area. This recession might keep a few of us home :) I know the highway that connects marco island to miami wrecked a lot of the wildlife by draining the swamps. I learned that while on a tourist  airboat ride ;D.  Should have seen me. Wide brim hat, camera around my neck, sun burnt face, and pointing at everything that moved. You would have no trouble telling I wasn't from around there. :D. I spent a few days just driving around on the gravel roads through the everglades and once the locals saw I had WI plates they would pull their truck in front of me and kick up dust for miles ;D. Cant blame them I guess.

I've been wondering how Shannon's trip went, found this one a little late...enjoyed the pic's and looked like yall had a fine time. I remember one of my earliest trips to Florida when I was 5 or 6 years old and we went to Sanna Bell and Captiva Island's...around the mid 60's. I don't remember much other then some cabins, fishing boats, crabs, and lots of sea shells...

Had an Aunt that lived in Melbourne, Fl., she used to bring us the sweetest oranges ripened off the tree!  :)

Dang, Roger, I should have gone with you. That sounds like some good eating and the wind didn't help us at all. And then, it started raining at 7 this morning and the wind was still blowing.
But we didn't get skunked. The good Ol' Huntin' Jeep scored another hog on the way in. A big pack tried to shoot across the road, and I swear, she's like that Volkswagon Herbie. I felt the gas pedal hit the floor, like it had a mind of it's own. Looked in the mirror and had one down and ended up catching another one alive that was a little rattled. So far the Jeep has got 1 Tom Turkey, 3 hogs, and 6 Armadillos.
I also shot a couple of more hogs and my buddy Chris shot a turkey and a Bobcat that jumped on the turkey. He said that was exciting. He watched the Bobcat sneaking on the turkey, and when he shot the bird the cat attacked the turkey and tried to run off with it. All I saw was hens and I'm not going to elaborate on the gobbling hen that somebody bagged. ::)

That looks like that cat I slipped up on last weekend. Slim and long legged.  Looks like a nice gobbler too.  What kind of hooks was he packin?
Six 6 armadillos with that jeep. ::)  You must have gotten better at hit'n 'em ;D
I watched 12 jakes run a bobcat off yesterday morning. They went running at him purring and clucking real aggressively. He stood his ground for a few seconds and then turned and ran away. ???
The wind was blowing about 25mph and it was raining here this morning too.  I thought about sleeping in, but figured I'd sleep when the seasons over.  Glad I went. I managed to kill this one just after fly down and was back home before I had time to get good and wet. 8)

Shannon, that is a Cara Cara.  You see a lot of them on SR 60., and around Okeechobee.  They range from Central America, on up to Fla.  You should have gotten Eddie to cook that Possum on the half shell for you.  ( Armadillo )  they are quite tasty.  Taste like mild pork.  You just have to be careful when cleaning them.  They are the only animal besides humans that can contract Hansen's disease.( Leprosy )  They were used in research for that disease, and some of them escaped, and bred with others, and some people have caught the disease from handling them.  You have to get the nasal droplets in your system to catch it, from what I understand of it.  But they are tasty.  I have heard that they also eat coral snakes.  So they do serve a purpose beside mobile speed bumps, and telling Tourist that they are land prawns. ;D  Well, glad that you got a hog anyways.  Those Oceolas are not the smartest creatures, but they sure do have the hearing, and eyesight, and are ever so cautious. ;)  Well Edward, I would love to go next week if you are going to be down that way.  I did not see the offer soon enough for this previous weekend. :(  I will have to show you my beautiful Fox skin that Hunter Trapper, and his Dad sent.  Did you ever put an edge on that Puma?   :)

Yep Eddie, I knew it was a given, but just didn't know when.  Between entertaining visitors, and skinning hogs, and plucking Turkeys, and digging holes, I didn't know when you would have the time.  :) Like I said in the Pm, the blade is made in japan.  Well enjoy it.  I want to go rock digging, and such sometime, when you have the time. ;)
