Title: April Challenge "Dalton"
Post by: Timo on April 02, 2009, 08:49:23 am
I rekon I'll get this started.Hope no one minds, but it is April already?  Dalton of any type? Long, short, big, small.Find a type you like, and build it.Or better yet build one of every type you can find pics of.  Here in Mo, there are all kinds of daltons, from just about every kind of material. Bring um on.

Good luck and happy knappin.:)

Well I don't have any old ones but did finish this one after I snuck home from work this afternoon. It's Ranbow Obsidian I really like the way that stuff looks.

All right, I'm on for this one. I always wanted to make daltons. I tend to make them anyways when trying to make something else. Its been imprinted in me from an earlier life, I think!  :o

Very nice point Mullet!

I was in the mood, so I found me a good piece of burlington and had at it. I guess I was on my game tonight cause this one came through without a hitch. Not sure if you can see the heal fracture that runs across the base? This is probly one of the best points I have every made. Got lucky. :o

Those all look great.  I don't have time to make one but here's a couple of pretty rough authentic ones I have.  Most of them I've seen from around here are usually better quality than these.

Here's my attempt. I found one in my book that looked about like this so thought I'd give that a shot. This is a peice of Georgetown that I picked up in - well Georgetown :). Found an old rancher that had nothing better to do than sit on the porch and drink ice tea - we hit it off instantly and I secured permission to load up all the rock I wanted. Life is a journey - ain't it 8).

Title: Re: April Challenge "Dalton"
Post by: Timo on April 15, 2009, 07:44:31 pm
I've tried them on a few occasions, and always end up with snapping ears. A buddy told me to keep the preform wide, thin the base well and run the notches. Then go back and bring the sides in  to finish. Never tired it....yet. ;)

Title: Re: April Challenge "Dalton"
Post by: D. Tiller on April 15, 2009, 07:57:20 pm
Thin the base first then run the notches using inderect pressure flaking. Then thin up the rest. Make sure the basic shape is there before thinning the base though!
Title: Re: April Challenge "Dalton"
Post by: cowboy on April 15, 2009, 09:46:04 pm
Hmm, that sounds a little spooky - running the notches first. I'd be afraid that'd be more likely to snap the ears than the other way. I'm no authority on calf creeks though :).
Title: Re: April Challenge "Dalton"
Post by: Timo on April 15, 2009, 10:28:01 pm
Tiller, you done much punch notching?
Title: Re: April Challenge "Dalton"
Post by: D. Tiller on April 16, 2009, 12:32:31 am
Nah, Nah Timo! Inderect PRESURE flaking. Means coming from the back side of the notch not the front.
Title: Re: April Challenge "Dalton"
Post by: Timo on April 16, 2009, 08:00:43 am
yea Tiller I got ya on that.:)  I'll try that on my next, and next and next one. :)

I was asking you if you ever punched before?
Title: Re: April Challenge "Dalton"
Post by: Bone pile on April 16, 2009, 08:20:08 am
I've been punching lately with some coming out good.I found you have to keep the burs  on the sides of the punch filed smooth ALL THE TIME! them little buggers will pop the ear off and it's allways on the second notch >:(

Lets hear some ideas for the May challenge.

Calf creek was mentioned, can't remember what else without looking back.

I'll throw in something. Since alot of us use our points in the field,How bout a hunting point of some type, cahokia, basic corner notch, etc, but making it with a certain grain weight?

Just under the wire.  This one is made from  Pedernales from Texas.  I couldn't get either flute to run.  This is the better side.
Kinda like a non-resharpened Dalton.  I broke a couple of others I was working on.

Calf creek or something with a certain grain weight would both be a challenge. I'm game for either Timo, we need to announce it quick though :).

Hardaway,ya got a nice scar pattern on that one!

I always have favored the side notch/ cahokia design.Maybe try to make a couple matched? 100-125 grains?

How bout we wait till everyone gets back from the classic. maybe they'll want to add imput?

Nice looking points and hafting job the bone pile! ;) You not use pitch to set your points?

I'll get them to take a survey at the Classic and maybe post their pics from there. Cahokia sounds great to me.. Nice arra's Roger!
