Thought I'd get this started. Looks like cahokia's are it with a certain grain weight to up the challenge a bit. I'm thinking somewhere between 125 - 150 grains? You guys speak up on what you'd prefer. I don't have my spec book with me at the moment, but these points are triangular, side notched. I know Ishi's looked a lot alike and he liked expanded notch, and I believe the base can be concave? Anybody with more info - feel free :). Here's a few to give an idea.

Here is a link to some originals. I think Most cahokias where on the smaller size but we can make them however big we want. ;D
Great hunting type points.

-
Whoa! Look at all the points. Thanks for the link Timo, that aughta get everybody started ;).
-
Figgered i'd have a go at it. Haven't broke a rock in so long I couldn't find my tools :o
Broke four before I got these two lil' guys done. Sure hard driving flakes on those chips.
Missed the weight too (31 gr & 62 gr), but I was just happy to have two finished ;D

Hey Roger, good to see ya around! Ain't nothin wrong with them points. They'll get the job done no matter what they weigh :). I'm sitting in a pasture west of Georgetown right now loading rocks. I should have some gray one's to post next week..
-
Thanks Paul...
Man...you lucky dog! That GT works nice. That's what these two are from. Watch out fer them rattleheadedcoppermoccasin's!

3rd point: a real beaut piece of purple Texas, had it so thin that in the light was almost all trans.Bout had the first notch done, deep and narrow.snap
When I break 3 in a row I quit. somedays? :'(

Sheesh Pete! First try? that is some kinda nice ;). I hear ya Timo, seems like we all have em :'(.

Roger
-
15.43 grains=1 gram ;D
-
here's some I made..Burlington chert and Keokuk chert, just like the originals.

-
Beautiful Billy! They look like originals, bet that smallest one was a bugger to notch :).
-
Nice job Billy. I just pulled out a penny for reference and, that's small. :o
Mike
-
Thanks ya'll. YEah, those points are pretty small, but that's the vast majority of what I make. I just love those little points!
-
Nice looking points, y'all. Shannon, post that little blue/white coral Cahokia I gave you at the Classic-it's probably one of the better Cahokias I've done.
-
Nice job on them Billy, and you bet, that is about the actual size of alot of cahokia points. I'm awwed at how you can get those things notched. ;)
-
Will do Steve. ;) While I'm at it I'll post a couple I made at work yesterday too. 8)
-
Here ya go! Hillbilly made the one on the left for me at the Classic. I made the next two yesterday at work and the last one today. I don't know what the material is ??? It's just some stuff Jesse threw in my box. 8)
The banded obsidian point is from a piece Wade gave me.
-
I know this ain't the kind we're supposed to be posting for this challenge, but does anybody know what type this one most resembles? I made it, but don't know what to call it ???
-
Hey Shannon, I,m not sure but I believe thats called a Gunther. Heres a point I made at the classic. Now if I can figure out how to post the picture.

beautiful points guys. wish i could get the flake patterns all clean like you guys do. anyway heres a few i did. one is from root beer flint , the other from a chunk of rhyolite . both stones came from hillbilly. i like the rhyolite a lot . it took me a wehile to figure out that i needed a slightly higher platform to get past the inclusions in that stuff. next point should be better. the noviculite point came out a bit heavy but it should work >:D

Man...yaw turnin out some nice stuff...I need to practice... ;D
Jamie that RB is sweet. I bet its sharp too!
R.
-
sure is roger . got a nice piece of it still imbedded in my hand ;D
-
Damn, you guys are turnin out some points here! Nice work there Steve, Shannon, Jamie - I'm gonna have to get busy :).
-
Jamie, the rootbeer colored stuff is Knife River flint from North Dakota. Good job on those. That rhyolite is great for hunting points, gets sharp and won't hardly break. Ancient Chinese secret for the hangnails: heat it up and rub beeswax on it or hit it with a shot of Armor-all. No more hangnails. :) Nice chippin', Outbackbob. Shannon, I think yours look better than mine.
-
Man You guys are hammerin out ain't ya? And talk about nice! Wow! :o AIn't getting no knappin time. >:(
Knife river is one of my fav to knap. Took me a bit to learn it, but man o man it makes some sharp thin heads. You got a bunch of that stuff hillbilly? I'll trade ya out of it somehow. ;)
-
Man! you guy's are cranking them out. I don't even have time to post that broken point Dana gave me.
-
damn jamie...we're making arrowheads....not AXE HEADS!! That's a beauty...bout the perfect size for taking down a C-130
-
billy thats a bird point. i just have really small feet ;D
-
Man! you guy's are cranking them out. I don't even have time to post that broken point Dana gave me.
Broken ::) One little corner off the ear and yer gonna hold that against me eh ;) :D
-
Tim, wish I had a bunch of that stuff. I picked up a couple spalls at a knap-in last year, I think that was my last piece that I gave Jamie.
-
Excellent points fellars. Gotta get on it!
Jamie, I'd like to see the arrow that novaculite is getting mounted on. :)
-
nice points guys. havnt had much time myself since getting back. will try to sit down and not break one.
Shannon -
that piece of banded obsid turned out great. nice job.

I'm in the same boat! Also, left my knapping kit at the Classic. Just do not know where my brain was! Man what a few days. My brain has still not gotten back into the fast pace of life here on the island after all the fun at the Classic!

Good people there at Twin Oaks to put up with us forgetful types! ;D

I know what you mean Tiller, I left a jar and a guava bow I couldn't give away. They are mailing it to me.

Here's one out of Burlington...I think.
-
Good thing about floods is the wash outs. I hit a couple road ditches today and found a good bucket of burlington.Got it home and knocked off a good spall. This came out of it. Wore my arse out being fresh from the earth! Gonna heat the rest of it... Not the best, and my notches stalled, but it'll do.(Don't look at that lil hingy thingy there) ;D

-
rainin here again today so I went to the shop after visiting Mom, O:)
Just went to. Knocked out 6 points 4 being side notch.
Lft to rt,creek nodule, not sure of mat,Jeff city chert I think-122grains.......Hixton,(and I am proud of that one) 102 grains...... Reed springs chert-64grains,(love the lightining bolt) ;D ......and choteau-62 grains.
-
Man those are nice! I'm guessing that Hixton is tough stuff. You should be proud of that one. But I really like the looks of the two on the right. Them's plum purdy ;D
-
Been out of pocket the last few days. Wow! you guys have been busy - great looking work all!!
-
all awesome but that hixton looks like some great material. where is that stuff from
-
Nice points Timo ,looks like they'll get the job done.I like tha lightning bolt too, gives it a good look
bone pile
-
Y'all are making some nice stuff. Timo, I really like that Hixton point. I've got a similar one from that same red-tip Hixton material that Scott Doblar from MN gave me-one of my favorite OPP's.
-
Man those are some nice points. I got a chance to knap this past weekend, I gotta post some pictures.
-
I have been having a tuff time lately, hobbling around on crutches. I badly twisted my left ankle in March; ruptured ligaments, spiral fracture of the fibula(small leg bone), had surgery, put a screw thru the ankle. I usually work off my left leg, so haven't done much knapping. The leg is feeling better, but ankle still little swollen. Anyway knapped a couple points this weekend. Here is my entry. It is Glass Buttes Obsidian, about 2 1/2 inch x 1 inch, 132 grains in weight, and sharp.

-
Sweet lil point! Looks like keokuk?
-
Timo, I don't know what the material is but you're probably right....I picked it up from the knapping pit at the Classic. :)
-
Looks like Keokuc (spelling?)
-
Better than just an attempt Pat - that's a sweet little point, and from debitage no less :).
-
Thanks Paul. :)
-
Not sure if this is correct but here is my attempt at it. The point is a little thick and wieghs about 200 grains.
TJ
-
pat that debitage pit was a gold mine . excellent work
-
Nice one, TJ.
-
Looks good TJ - keep on knappin ;).
-
Nice point Nugget.
I can't believe how much material was in that pile that far exceeded anything that I find locally. I've got a few pieces that I'm working with now.
Tracy
-
Here's my effort stone is unknown a spall I threw in my bucket at the Classic. It needs a little more work as it has a curl in the tip,
but overall not bad for a beginner eh :) Its 1.25" wide and just under 2.5" long and weighs in at 156 grains.
-
Nice point, Dana, looks like Keokuc.
-
Yup, that one'll work Dana - nice point!! I don't know what material, but if ya stick it in the right spot = meat ;).
-
Well I finally made time to try another point tonight. I'm kinda proud of this one. I call it the first "real" point I've made. "Real" meaning it's the first one that I've made from a spall and used some percussion to thin. The other half dozen or so flint points I've made were just pressure flaked from thin flakes. I almost made a couple others tonight also. (emphisis on almost) Just as I would get 'em thin enought to start pressure flaking, I'd break 'em. >:(
Anyhow, it's 2-7/16" long and 15/16" wide and weighs 131 grains. I don't know what the material is. It's something Jesse threw in my box at the Classic. It's blacker than the picture shows and only passes light on the very edges.
I'm happy with it, whatever it is. ;D

Dustin D
-
Now that is a real point and very nicely made...Thanks for letting us see youe work..
Curt
-
Looks great Shannon and you got the notches nice and deep :)
-
Very good work,I think every one stepped up a notch on this style
Bone pile
-
Dana, nice work, looks alot like the Jeff city chert we have around here! ;)
Saw, that is a nice job! you are hooked now......Good notches, and nice convexity.
-
Hey Shannon nice point, looks like dacite to me. Now that your using percussion you probably give up the glass an pressure flaking only when you have to. I just gotta smash something. :>) Later Bob
-
Oh yeah! That's a nice one Shannon! I don't see a step anywhere -- niiiice :) :).
-
Wow ! Nice points guys. Yeah, that looks like dacite to me too, course,I've got dacite on the brain, love the stuff. ' Frank

-
And here's one that Dana did out of Osidean, He made this for me for the point trade.
-
I'm gonna have to find some of that brown glass. Cool point Eddie - looks like ya e-notched it a little. Looks like Dana's getting better too - nice pernts..
-
Really nice points everyone.I think this month challenge was a great way for us to learn a bit more about a good quality hunting point, and how better to make them. The animals this fall don't stand a chance? ;)
-
I made this one out of some broken blue glass found along the road. It looked like it might have been an old jar. I used the biggest piece left from the bottom. Managed to get the curve out, but is smaller than I wanted. This one weighs in at about 110 grains.
Allen

Nice flaking and symetry Allen!

Made this one out of raw Texas, ABO knapped just to see if I could. I can't find my reloading scale, but it would work on the end of a shaft.
