I don't see one for this month. I would like to suggest a Savannah River spear point for this month's type. They are made 100% percussion and out of a wide range of materials. Savannah River points were the largest point made around here. Some are quite crude & thick, while some are finely made. The Savannah River point appeared around 3,000 B.C. and lasted until just before the first arrowheads, so it lasted a couple thousand years. It is a common spear point to find (in central N.C. anyway).
The largest ancient point I saw was 7 & 1/2 inches long, obviously smaller points are more common and practical.

Sounds good to me. SR's are one of my faorite point styles. Plus, they were usually made out of quartzite or rhyolite. >:D

Sounds like a good one to me. I don't have any quartzite or rhyolite so will have to try one out of this junk I have ::).

Johnstone is just rhyolite whose ancestors moved to the city. ;D the second one from the left in the bottom row of the pic is pretty much the "classic shape" for the type. Most of them are pretty big, too-about palm-sized or so.

it was all percussion,except a little pressre to clean up the edge a little

The ones I've found down here look a little different than those. They are long,6"or more, wide and a pretty non descript base. All percussion flaked with just some edge touch up with pressure. I'll see if I can find sme pictures when I get home. And they were usually made with our crappy chert. The stuff Hillbilly liked. ;D

I got some rhyolite and I will attempt to make one of those. Hopefully it will be close. It is some good ol Uwahrie rhyolite that I aquired recently.

Good pick Jim, I've always loved finding these. Here is by far the best original I have. It's Quartzite and has a pretty classic shape, at least for my area of NC.

And here is my best attempt at one so far, it stayed in one piece at least! It is a piece of rhyolite I got from Joe at the Burlington knapin. All percussion with dogwood billets and hammerstone.

Dang, I'd better get busy. Those are some sweet looking points, guys. I'm pretty partial to Savannah Rivers ,even if Hardaways are my favorites.

Here is my sad attempt at a SR. It is rhyolite. My first with both the stone and style. Looks more like a knife blade to me. If nothing else it is very rustic looking. A little dirt on it and some wethering it might look authentic.

TJ, that one actually looks really authentic. Just need to square that base up a little. That old speckled rhyolite is some tough stuff, you did it justice..

i used a cobble stone from Texas and it come out pretty good. I think this is a perdenale?

Thanks Steve. It was thicker than I wanted it and it was stalling out everytime I tried to even the base out. I also took pictures before I finished cause I wanted proof before I busted it.

Good work guys. I'll go ahead and post my own sorry attempt - and no, I ain't gonna show you the cross section ;D. This is some kind of silicified somethinorother I picked up in the river, closest thing I had to rhyolite or that other stuff but seemed to work (kinda) ::).

I don't know TJ, they both look fairly authentic to me though I've never held one - and yours is thinner. I'll most likely heat this up one day and refine it.

They both look like the real deal to me. I have a few ancient Savannah River points that are so thick it is hard to imagine that they were used for anything but a thrusting spear.
I got a couple of pieces of rock picked out for my attempt. Time wil tell how i do... Muzzleloader starts this weekend too, so I intend to be busy hunting, dragging, or dressing deer.

Paul, that one looks really good. You got the base perfect, too. That looks like some good rock, there- I bet it would work really good with hardwood billets. Jim, I'm gonna be down there in your neck of the woods next week with the Hawken and flintlock.

Paul, that one is perfect! Don't do anything to that one, looks like it just came out of a field here. Steve is right, you got the base just perfect on that, couldn't be any better.

Thanks Joe, my brother actually found that one and we both almost passed out and fell face first in the dirt when he pulled that out of the ground.
Paul, I'll take some of that river junk. :) The way you have the base different on each side is very common on the originals I find. Here are two originals that have bases very similar to yours.

Alan: Thanks for posting these base examples. I notice the crude nature of the type in the pic of that collection. So I went to town on it with the boppers ;D. That's acutally the only piece of that stuff that I picked up that day, the rest of my bucket was perd. Next time I'm in San Antonio i'm gonna grab some more.

I hunted all day Saturday, no shooter bucks of the 5 I saw and none close enough for my muzzleloader anyway. Does are off limits at the lease until the end of next week. I also had an inspection postponed today and got to hunt 6 hours this morning. No bucks, 5 antlerless deer & 14 turkeys (including one longbeard that better be careful come Spring). Somebody shot about 50 yards from our property boundary...likely one of the smaller bucks I saw Saturday.

Nice looking points & axes, Pete. I find more of the Guilford-type axeheads around here & only have one grooved axehead.
Those are some realistic looking points Eddie. I'd believe it if you told me they were ancient.

Here is my entry. It made of raw Pedernales that has some wild stuff going on in it (thanks, Curtis!). Made 100% Abo percussion. I love a big moose billet. It is a little thicker at the base than I would have liked, but not as thick as some I've found.

Good one Jim! Man, that's some wild lookin perd! I have picked up some cobbles like that with a mix of actual chert and some quartzy stuff, and some silicified sandstone or something all mixed together. Gotta hold yer mouth just right to work that stuff ;).
