Greetings and Salutations...

I'm on the West side of town, I-10 and West Sam Houston Tollroad area.

Pile diving every wood pile I see on lawn waste pick up day and Chopping down every hardwood tree I see... in my mind that is.  ;D

Just getting going in building bows.
Building out my tillering tree, string jig and wood gathering.
Have my first bow, Osage self bow, ready to tiller.

Hello Aelerik,

Sorry, don't know how I missed this reply...
Had my nose to the grind stone lately.  :)

I'm in the Gessner - Long Point area, I-10 West and West Sam Houston Parkway.

Most of my wood is already split, and still a bit green but I think I could pass a stave your way that is ready to rough out.
As well as help you get it to the point of floor tiller once it's seasoned. But I can't guarantee a good tiller yet...   ;)
Still trying to get the tillering process worked out in my head.

Got one bow mostly tillered, and three others in process.

Had a chance to meet Aelerik yesterday.
Got him paired up with a decent stave from the Osage trees George and Cipriano and I fell back
on the July 4th weekend. The wood was down to 11%, still needs a bit of drying but pretty darn close considering its short life as a stave.

Got him lined out on chasing some rings and turned him loose...

Aelerik is a Very Nice, well mannered young man.
Eager to learn and ready to make wood shavings.
He is welcome any time.

As I am not a bowyer as of yet, I just stuck to the basics.

Hi Gus
Well I haven't got to far yet just finishing up my first
its a molly style that I am making from a pine 1x4 .
I have a elm stave roughed out but it still needs a lil more time
But so far I enjoy it.
Title: Re: Houston Tx
Post by: Gus on September 12, 2011, 05:28:10 pm
I hear ya Bo.

Man, a pine molly... That sounds like a tough design for a pine bow.
Do you have it shooting?

Not to far along yet myself.
Have one Osage bow shooting but not finished.
Two more Osage bows ready to tiller, mostly.
A Pecan sapling Longbow that is getting close to tillering.

Been spending a lot of time gathering materials and building tools for use in bow making.
Along with trying to learn to knapp and build arrows.

Its getting close I did actually shoot it today but its not really ready
It has a crack in the back so I backed it with a cotton shirt
It helped some but it still needs some tillering one limb is still
a lil stiff.  My next attempt is gonna be a elm stave I have roughed out
and curing.may attempt another board bow in a pyramid style.

Title: Re: Houston Tx
Post by: Gus on September 13, 2011, 03:24:26 pm
Yes Sir Bo,

Sorry you lost your Pine Molly.

From what I have read, pine can be made into a bow.
But you have to go Very Long, Very Wide, and Very Light in draw weight.

If you are board bow building I would recommend an Oak board.
Or Hickory/Pecan if you have access to it.

I've also read that the Molly design is a tougher to tiller owing to the flat uniform cross section of the bending sections of your limbs.

Have you considered a longbow or flatbow design?

-gus
Title: Re: Houston Tx
Post by: Bohunter0908 on September 13, 2011, 06:39:35 pm
Yeah Gus my next board will be a pyramid style and most likely
Oak although I do have acess to pecan and some other
 Nice stuff
Title: Re: Houston Tx
Post by: Gus on September 13, 2011, 07:15:44 pm
Hello Bo,

I hear ya.

Pecan will definitely do you better than Pine, hands down.
From the advice that I've seen on PA along with TTBB and other sources, Pecan works well when you keep your limb width at least two inches from the fades out to about mid limb then start your taper out to half inch tips.

I'm in the process of tillering a Pecan Sapling bow that is a bit more narrow at about an inch and a half out to mid limb, tapering to a half inch at the tips. But I made this bow Long at about seventy three inches n-t-n. Its holding together so far, but we'll see.  ;)

Bo,  it does sound like you have a good wood connection going on.
Still trying to do a bit of wood networking locally myself.

Would be happy to pass an Osage stave your way.
But be warned all of my unworked Osage staves were cut in the past three to four months.

Heading to South Central Texas in short order, hoping to gather some materials along the way.

Hi Jermcramp,

Welcome.

Man, I've spent quite a few hours digging through Houston Hardwoods Racks and Bins... :)

The idea of having a monthly or biweekly  or some such get together for bow making and what not has been loosely discussed.
And even more so after reading Miss Sadiejane's thread on the Bow Class that she has going out her way.

I guess the thing to do would be to find a willing soul who could host.
It would be good if the place was centrally located but that is not a show stopper.
Having some room to work and shoot would be helpfull.
Then find a time most suitable to as many as would be interested in coming.

I don't mind hosting, we're located in Spring Branch.
Have some workable facilities but mostly a hand tools setup at the moment.
Think we could manage a twenty yard mini range.

Lets talk it up!!!  ;)

I would love to host but my 7 mo prego wife might not be up for that...

As far as tools, I cut shape with skill and the rest rasp and file...

And I think 20 yds is perfect!
Title: Re: Houston Tx
Post by: Gus on October 20, 2011, 05:07:54 pm
I'll get the yard and work benches squared away.

Next we need to decide on when we want to meet.

Bohunter0908 had expressed an interest in a get together.
Aelerik might be up for it as well.

I'm up for most any day Except for Tuesdays.

Once we get a first meet together the rest will sort itself out as we go...   :)

Lets make some Shavings!

Any chance yall just wanna meet up for lunch or somethin and drive around lookin for some trees outside H-town?? Im pretty much as new as u can be to this but im sure we can find somethin worth choppin down if we all just meet up. Only reason i say we meet up is because i noticed the problem with tryin to stuff 3-5 people in one persons yard. I think it'd be cool though to just sit down and talk about bows with other people. If yall want to, lets try and get somethin coordinated.

Post by: Gus on December 08, 2011, 06:27:36 pm
It might not be a bad idea to look up that 70 tree listing on Craigs List again to see if there is anything there of interest.
It was on the north side of town but not far out.

As far as hunting trees go, I'm pretty covered up at the moment.
Probably won't be tree hunting till after sinew season.
That is unless I hear of an Osage or Black Walnut or some such tree that needs whackin'.

Anyone want to come by and do some white tail leg cutting this Saturday or Sunday let me know.
You keep what you cut.

Hi Fellas. I'm in the Woodlands/Spring area and just putting the finishing touches on my first red oak board bow. I'm starting the floor tillering on my next board, but I already have an itch to try a stave. I imagine I may have to purchase one which would be fine for my first, but I'm interested in where/how some of you are getting access to the ability to chop your own tree? I'm still kind of fresh to the Houston area and don't have any access to land, so just kind of wondering. Do any of the lumber yards around here happen to sell staves or is it best to just fork out the cash for reasonably priced first stave off the internet? I appreciate any help or advice for broke college student  ;)
Title: Re: Houston Tx

Hello heliopilot and AJMag.

Welcome aboard.

You've found one of the best sources of information geared toward the so called Primitive Arts on the web.
At least in my honest opinion.
In my short year of time here on the PA Forum I've had the pleasure to meet and deal with some of the Nicest folks I could have asked to meet.
The good folks here have a Wealth of knowledge running down most any path from Bow Building to Flint Knapping to Primitive Living in all its intricacies.

I am no expert nor am I a bowyer, though I've got a couple of shooting bows and few sharp arrow heads knapped out so far... :)
I'm out on the West side of Houston near I-10 and the West Sam Houston Toll Road.
If y'all make it out this way I'll be happy to pass a good stave into your hands and help you get started working it.

As for staves and wood in general around the Houston area.
Two good places to hunt hardwood boards are:
Houston Hardwoods:  http://www.houstonhardwoods.com/
Clark's Hardwood Lumber:  http://www.clarkshardwood.com/

I also keep my ear out for the Dreaded Wood Chippers when I out and about around town.
With the drought of the past year there are Thousands of hardwood trees being taken down and mostly chipped.
I've had some luck with stopping and picking up wood from them.
Another potential source is Tree Trimming Companies.

Yet another option are the good folks here on PA.
Every now and then folks will get together for a wood cutting party.

The next to last option for the uninitiated is Ebay.
You can find good wood on Ebay, but you can get stung as well.

The last option, at least on my list, are Some of the premium purveyors of staves on the net.
Once again there are some good ones, and there are some not so good ones.

One of the good ones, in my opinion, is Gary Davis of Rattlestick Bows.
He sells Excellent Osage Staves that are nearly Floor Tillered when you receive them.

We have started trying to have a Houston get together once a month to work on bows and what have ya and y'all are welcome to come by make shavings.
At the moment the next get together will most likely be sometime in February.
The date is yet to be determined.

Sorry didn't meat to write a book... :)

Best Regards,

-gus

Hey Guys,

My name is Aaron and I am in the Humble Area (NE Houston). I'm just starting out with bow building and thought I'd connect with a local community of bow builders. I have my tillering tree built and my garage workshop ready for the first round of bows. I'm starting (on a budget) with a Holmegaard of red oak from Lowe's. Then I hope to make it out to the hardwood shop on 290 for some more interesting bow/backing combos. Anyways, just wanted to say Hey and if there is a get together I'd love to meet other like-minded folks. My only other obligations are my wife, college and bows. Cheers.

Hello Aaron,

Welcome aboard!

Would be happy to include you in the Houston Group when we get going again.
We've not had a meet this year as of yet.
Two of the guys, which is the lion's share of the group, have new babies and my plate has been pretty full.
With that said I have a feeling that once things settle down and the weather warms a bit, the get to gethers will
get going again... :)

When you make it out this way I'll be happy to get an Osage stave into your hands to give you an alternative wood to work with.

Hope you enjoy this site and the Great Folks on it!

To my fellow Houstonians,

With tree trimming time upon us, I am looking for insight. Does anyone know of local species of trees that make good bow wood that I should be on the lookout for? I see the occasional hardwood trunk on the trailers of tree trimmers and would love any info on local trees you guys have had success with.

Cheers,

Aaron
Title: Re: Houston Tx

aclewis3,

You bet.

Mulberry is a top notch local bow wood.
Crepe Myrtle is a good choice.
Elm Trees make good bow wood
Hackberry is another.
White Oak
Red Oak
Sycamore should not be over looked.

Just to name a few
And Osage starts showing up around Livingston heading north.

Hello Everybody,

Just thought I would bump this thread to the top and start getting some ideas bouncing around for a Houston Primitive Get Together.
It's been quite a wile since our last get together, and there are some new Houston Folks coming aboard P.A...

So How about we get something brewing for June?

Any ideas or preferences for a Date or Day of the week?
Like a Saturday or Sunday, what is good for everyone?
Would we want to try for June 9th or 10th?

We can get together at my place, unless someone else has a better place or wants to host.

Hope all is well!

I missed it. A birthday came up that I forgot. This day has been bad like that. On the bright side, I found some intriguing wood. Its bright white, and when I put my hawk into it it smelled of ginger. Could this be sassafras ? If I can get all of it, could I bring it over to you for inspection ? It does have a bit of wobble, but its pretty straight compared to some of the stuff I have seen you guys make bows out of.

I had a feeling that I've been missing out on things. I was hoping to get on here regularly enough to catch some kind of get together to see some others in action. This college class/working "stuff" has dominated my life and I haven't even had much time to continue on the last board I started. Just wanted to mention that I'm going to try my best and pay better attention for any upcoming dates.

Hey Bo,

Glad to hear from ya.
Hope you and your Family are doing well.

Had my head down mostly covered up with Family Business the past six months.
But that is mostly finished.

Had a couple of shooters finished and shipped.
About to finish a new Osage Molly and a Sinew Backed Osage Longbow with flipped tips.
Also working on a Problem Child Rawhide Backed Yew Pyramid that may be my first Explode-O-Bow.

We need to have a get to gether towards the end of September or early October.
Preferably after an early season cool front.  :)

I say lets start talking it up and see who's interested in getting together.

Definitely wouldn't mind a get together, and definitely wouldn't mind a cool front beforehand. Got a couple I'm working on when I can manage to stand the heat.  Even though I've got target fixation on deer season, I'd be down to sacrifice a day to join in, assuming no demanding class assignments, also.

My Stihl is well broken in, but I don't think I've started it since the last time we cut wood.  ::)  I guess this time I should make sure it actually runs before you guys get up here.  Mary says we'll be home the first 2 weekends in August and Thomas said he'd leave the tractor out for us if we came when he wasn't there so I don't think there's any reason we can't do it.  Let me know which weekend you choose.

You'd be going to the northeast side of the Dallas burbs.  I live near Wylie, and the place we cut from is just northeast of McKinney which is a little further north.  If you want to check it with your GPS, the zip here is 75098.

Within reason, anyone that's interested in getting some osage that's driving distance from Dallas is welcome.  Thomas said he had 4 osage trees picked out for us to cut.  I don't personally know which ones they are.  He also has dead straight cedar elm and hackberry that he'd probably let us cut.  I can check if somebody wants it. I also think there's more osage too, though it probably isn't as easy to access.  There's one huge old osage monarch that is 90% dead already, but I don't think there's a place on it that's straight for over 3'.  Best part of the whole deal is that Thomas keeps a brush pile going all the time and will clean up all the small branches and wood we don't take after we leave.

What we did last year is meet at my house about 8:30am for my wife's famous biscuits and gravy.  Of course, this means the guys from down south have to leave real early.  Sorry about that.  Let me know who's planning to come.  I know we talked about the 4th earlier, but I'm planning on Saturday, Aug 3rd.  Correct me if I'm wrong Gus.  I wouldn't be available until after lunch on Sunday.

I'm easy...

I'll go with what ever you fellers want to do.

I would recommend that we not spend time and effort splitting logs this trip.
Keeping our focus on cutting, loading and hauling waste wood to the brush pile.

Are you sure that was this last time?  I thought we only split wood to be able to lift it that first time?  We can load logs in pickups with the tractor loader again and I don't think the remaining trees are as large as that first one was.  I could be wrong though.  I'm fine with us heading straight over there.  How early can you make it Gus?  We have a spare bed if you want to drive up Friday night.  I'll be a zombie though, have a hog hunt Thursday night.

Looking forward to Breaking In Cipriano's New Sthil...    8)

I'm planning on crashing at my Uncle's place Friday night.
So I should be able to be at your place by 6:00 or 6:30 George.
Or even earlier if necessary...

Then it's back to Cipriano and 4dog.  How early can you guys make it?  I'll be up by 6 but I don't think we should run chain saws out at Thomas' until at least 7 or so.  He said the earlier the better, but I want to be considerate to his family too.

Howdy all.

Just saw this thread this morning. I know a bunch of you guys are outta town on a wood getting spree. Sounds like a good time. I am in the Tomball/Magnolia area, and recently started working on a juniper bow from some wood I brought with me when I moved down here from Montana a couple years ago. I still have to figure out how to post pictures and stuff on this site, but just wanted to drop a line and say howdy. Would like to get deeper into primitive archery than just the magazine. LOL! I've been shooting recurves for about 11 years, but haven't gotten to hunt since I moved down here, thanks to work constraints and working out of state last year. Anyway, glad I found somewhere to hang out and get some advice and hopefully meet some new friends.

Howdy everyone.

Been a while since I was on here last. Our computer went down, and fighting with the kids for time on their tablet is nearly a moot point. Lol! I presume everyone made it into the new year alright, hopefully.

Do any of you guys go to any of the 3D shoots? I know there is one today at Buffalo Field Archery today, and I think there is one over by Conroe at Archery on Fire next weekend, as well as the ASA qualifier there this weekend, too.

Have any of you done anything with western juniper before? I want to finish up my first bow I started last year, but don't know where to go beyond roughing out the bow. It is 60" tip to tip, currently, though I may trim it down a bit more if it looks like the small bit of twist it has at the tips is going to be a problem. The 8' log the stave came from had 180 degrees of twist in it. The whole tree was actually able to grow very straight, so it never really clicked that it would have any twist, until the first two halves popped apart. Also, where I am with it now, I need to know how to proceed with the cambium layer. I had one friend with decades of experience with selfbows tell me to leave it on, and back over it with rawhide or another backing. Other guys I have talked to said to take the cambium off completely. One person said he has seen them stripped down to wood and left unbacked. So, any input? Lol! Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Michael

Hello Michael,

I'm currently located in Spring Branch.
Well be here for the next two weeks.
Then we'll be popping up in the Woodlands for a while.
Hoping to land in the Conroe area in the not too distant future.

You are welcome to swing by now or later.
I'm sure I could put a stave or two into your hands to play with.

As to your Juniper Bow.
If you are gonna back it, I would take the Cambium layer off.
But that's just me.

Gus i used to live in off kempwood when i was a kid. We left that area when i was about 12. When are you guys moving and why are yah getting rid of the wood. I'm fairly certain that i would make room for my wood pile. i would stack it nicely in the master bedroom and then strategically place the matresses over the top of it and call it a bed.
Title: Re: Houston Tx
Post by: Michael Scott on March 19, 2014, 08:51:41 pm
Howdy Gus,

Where will you be located in the Woodlands? There is a monthly shoot over there, just east of I-45 a few miles, at Archery on Fire. I made it to last month's shoot, and am hoping to pull off this weekend's shoot.

I saw a posting of a juniper bow a fellow did on here, and it looked like he left it unbacked, but took the cambium layer off, too. Was a great looking bow. Also saw something about using the heartwood, and backing that, too, so I may try that so I get some of the heartwood coloration.

What kind of staves do you have on hand? I wouldn't mind getting a decent quality stave to practice on, as the juniper material I have currently isn't particularly rookie-friendly, what with the twist it has.

Talk to you soon.

Michael

Ink,

I'm just down from Kempwood off the West end of Long Point.
And I'm hoping to leave too much behind, Wood, Rock or Iron.

But in truth I have Several Tons of wood and Stone to move.

So if I could pass along a Stave, Split or Log along to some local folks that need it, that would be good for them and me. But if nobody wants it I'll just have to take it all with me...

;)

Michael, we are gonna be up near Woodlands Parkway.
I'd love to make some of the Shoots up that way once we get settled.

You can make a Juniper Self Bow.
The nicer the Piece of Juniper is, the better your chances.

I could lay an Osage Stave on ya...
And maybe some Mulberry...

;)

Howdy Ink,

You're about an hour from me. Not bad, but would take a little planning ahead to make it up. How often do you guys have shoots up there? I'd like to get to know more people in the primitive archery spectrum, and make more shoots, too.

Gus,

Where will you be at off the Woodlands Parkway? I am over that direction regularly for work, and live not too far from there, to boot. I'd be very appreciative of any staves or advice you'd be willing to give me. This juniper bow is the first bow I've done anything with. I am going to peel the cambium off, and I may shorten the bow up a bit at each end to give it a bit more power. I think I am a bit narrow and thin on the limbs to get much power out of it, but a bit shorter might help give it a bit more oomph. Also, I saw one fellow on PA that it looked like he did an un-backed juniper bow, but I couldn't swear to it. Do you know anything about building a bow without backing it? Does it work, is it advisable? Also, I am thinking about doing something with crepe myrtle, too. I saw some threads about that as a bow wood, too. And I guess crepe myrtle can be heat-tempered, which I guess makes it possible to build the bow green and then dry it?

Also, if you guys want, look me up on Facebook: http://facebook.com/mhscott2

Howdy Michael,

Our new house (Temporary) is one road south of Woodlands Parkway off of Grogan Mill/Raford Sawdust,  Timber Mill Road is our street.
At this point I think it's gonna be a couple weeks before I get my work area set up again.
But I should be back I'm action pretty Quick...

Good thing is, I'll have gone through all my staves by then by moving them, and we should be able to find you a nice Piece of Osage.

Juniper can go Unbacked.
But it depends A Lot on the Quality of the Stave, and Skill of the Builder.

Heat Treating is used on Seasoned, or at least Dry Wood.
Putting Heat to Green Wood is Not Advisable...
You risk inducing Cracks and Ckecks at best...

Crepe Myrtle can make a Nice Bow indeed.
It pays to choose a piece of CM that will line up with as little correction needed up front.
Or be prepared for a bit of resistance in straightening.

If you would, send me a PM and I'll send you my Cell Number.

Regards,

-gus

Micheal, there's a shoot every month with the archery club that i'm a member in. Mostly compound shooters but there's several of us trad shooters that regularly attend. Check out the Brazos County Archery Clubs web site for more info and shoot dates.

Hey guys, I know its been awhile for this thread, but im in the Spring Branch Houston area. Im looking to see if I can swap some labor for some knowlage in regards to bow making. Im also wondering if anyone may know where a fellow could find some stands of cane around here. I was thinking maybe along buffalo bayou. What I can offer is my skills as a painter and remodeled guy. I can do it all except major electrical and plumbing. Well, have a dry weekend fellow Houstonians.

Hey everybody. Been off here a while. Work has been busy. Home builders are throwing houses up as fast as they can, weather permitting, and as such, I have been running my butt off fixing fences for them. LOL! Who's all ready for hunting season? If I get to bowhunt this year, it will be with my Bear Grizzly, but the way practice time has lined up (or not, actually), I may only end up rifle hunting. Not quite sure yet. How's things been for everybody else?

Ink, I almost came up to ya'll's shoot last Sunday, but as people I knew down here kept dropping out of going, I decided I wasn't interested in driving up in my Suburban by myself. Then I found out that another guy and his wife actually ended up going. :/ Oh well. When does your club start their 3D shoots up again?

peterdragon, I am up by Magnolia, and see bamboo stands on the sides of several roads up here. I don't know the specifics on cutting off the side of the road, but I would think it wouldn't be that big of a deal to harvest some of the smaller stalks for arrows. I have been considering the same thing. I think it would be nice to have bamboo shafts to shoot out of my selfbow when (if?) I ever get it finished.

I may have to cruise those roads and see what I can find. I have been working in spring and porter allot and im in the process of tree larceny at a few of the construction sites. Im just trying to ID a few so I dont end up making tallow tree bows. Im thinking I may have a maple sapling or three and a ton of white oak. Ill keep yall posted on what I grab.

Peterdragon, if you can find a way to make it to college station one of these days, i can put a decent osage stave in your hands. And maybe a white wood stave as well to get you started in bow building. Let me know if your interested in coming up.

That would be a huge help. So far I can spot sassofrass and what I think is some type of maple and oak trees. Was thinking I would just have at one and see how it go's.
