Marie, when I started with PA we were still writing in hieroglyphics. :D I first read about Primitive Archer Magazine in an ad in Traditional Bowhunter Magazine. As soon as I saw the ad I got a 1 year subscription. That was months before the magazine actually came out and I have awaited every issue since then. ;) 8) I got on the message board as soon as I got a computer at home. I did visit the site from my office computer when biz was slow.

Many years ago, when dinosaurs still roamed the earth, I googled "primitive archery" to see if I was the only idiot out there trying to whittle bows out of trees. I was pleasantly surprised, to say the least. ;D

Stumbled onto the board after several weeks of searching for information on how to make arrows. I think I was searching for "arrow spine".

I believe it was at the original MoBoJam that I met.."what's his name?" Dang it! I hate it that my "sometimers" is more like "all-timers" any more. I can see his smiling face in my minds eye. Not what you'd call a handsome lad but very pleasant young man with what he tried to pass off as a beard (more like scruff) and glasses. I think we had occasion to visit at several of the MoBoJams after That also. He was nice enough to sit a visit and even shared a sample copy of this crazy magazine to which I immediately bought a subscription. All of the issues I ever received was my favorite. I just couldn't isolate the #1 in my mind. I read every one of them from cover to cover the same day they arrived in the mail.
I kept them in a special place where I could easily find them and shove them in friends faces just to show them I wasn't the only crazy in the world or even in Missouri. Then along came a very nice young man(jeff Vinson age 7 or 8) who showed a great deal of interest in archery even primitive archery. I knew immediately where I was gonna recycle any and all of my old magazines and any other reading material I could come up with. Fast forward, say 20 years this past fall. Jeff brought me a cardboard box filled with stuff he had gotten from me over the years. It was like Christmas early at my house.
I noticed that one of the volumes wasn't there and neither of us knew whatever became of it. Someday maybe I'll find it or get another copy. The cover had a fella walking around with his bow being followed by a small herd of pack goats. A great read!!
Jeff just called me from New Orleans to tell me he was going thru "arch of the arrow" withdrawals and hoped he would make it back home before the end of our deer season so we could do a stalk hunt together. I got to share with him how I started 2010 with an arrow arching skyward with flames marking its path, carrying my prayers for a better year to come.
Wow! Don't get us ole folks started...hahaha!!! It's a good thing my cell rang when it did or this post might have gone on for a couple more pages.
With all the love of Christ Jesus
Have a happy, healthy,safe and blessed 2010

Man, this brought back a memory. I was handed a copy of PA from a work buddy of mine that his uncle had laying around. That's been a few years back.

On another forum. I make mountain and native american stuff. I was, well I guess, too primitive for them.

Somehow I found it searching the web. Glad I did to, because I really needed some help on my bowmaking skills. What a relief to find such nice people wanting to help you anyway they can. Thanks Guys,

Years ago shortly after the "beginning" it was PMed to me from a couple on another board that is no more.
Lost my post count" because I have no idea who my provider (address) was or what the pass word was.
Was easier just to re-register.

Found out about community from a web video on making your own bow. Found the video from a google search.

Not sure when PA magazine started but I remember first hearing about it from a guy at arrowhead archery in Green Bay WI. He sold me my first and only store bought longbow. A used timberline safari. He showed me how to shoot it and told me about instinctive shooting. After talking about doing stuff the old way for a while he mentioned that if I wanted to learn more there was a great new magazine called Primitive archer. Im pretty sure that was a bit more than 11 years ago. I stumbled onto the website much later. I was building a BBI and saw that one had won bow of the month. I went online and found the message board through that. I sent in requests to become a member for over a month with no reply and then I was about to give up on it when I got in. Still not sure what that was all about ??? :)

LoL ! Marie

Picked up the my first magazines from the newstand. Finally subscribed three or four years ago. Bow of the month piqued my interest so I started viewing this site daily last January. Great mag and great site. Trying to build bows a couple years and enjoy reading others experiences. If was more computer literate I would try to post with pictures as I could use some specific advise. I have all four volumes of Bowyers Bible, Hunting the Osage Bow, and Cherokee Bows but still struggle. Biggest problem is I have never had my hands on a self-bow nor do I personally know anyone who uses or builds. Started hunting in 1957 and bow hunting in 1965 but "primitive is all new" can you believe that. I was old enough to know better.

a year & a half ago, i decided that string guns were getting too complicated & i felt like doing things more primitive. i tried for a month or so to find an affordable longbow that felt good at my 30" draw. seemed like everything available locally stacked at 28". i've been an AT member since '05, so i started hanging around the traditional forum there & met Kegan, who got me started building my own & also suggested this site. that was 20+ bows ago! now i'm a subscriber to the mag & i spend way too much time here- according to my lovely wife, that is. you people have helped me convert a passing interest in longbows into a full blown obsession with shaping, shaving, and all around torturing wood.
thank you!
Rob

When I first got into bow making, I naturally looked for books, magazines, and websites associated with primitive archery. I found Primitive Archer magazine at our local bookstore, then assumed (and assumed correctly) "there must be a website". And thus, here I am. At the same time, after spending some time as a member of the "Planet", I discovered some of the same friendly folks there are also here, so I joined.
-
i was referred by George T. after emailing him about some info a few years ago after viewing his site. Ty
