Since the flintknapping challenge seems to have kinda fizzled out, I thought I'd grab it by the horns, give it a good shake, and resurrect this fun part of the flintknapping challenge. Since I'm an arrow point nut, I figured we could make this one a bit more open. Make an arrow point, whatever kind you like and post a pic of it. You like Cahokia points? Then knap a few and post 'em. How about side notched points? They have a place here too. Clunky or refined, crude or exquisite, we want to see everybody's work. Some people on here are intimidated by other knappers, feeling their work isn't up to par with what other, more experienced knappers produce. Well....DON'T BE!!
Wherever your favorite arrow points are found....western or eastern, northern or southern, if you like it and it is considered an arrow point, then make it and post it here!
I'm gonna start this one off with some Gunther barbed points I made, as well as one Perdiz point. As a lot of my true arrow points reflect, these are kinda "abo" looking, with some asymmetry and a kinda "rough" appearance. These were made on small waste flakes that would have otherwise been thrown away. Enjoy...now get to knapping!

Wish i could do that. Maybe someday. Love that largest one in the center Billy, great job.
-
great work bill. wheres the proton sized reference. ;D ive been ruining rock cause after watching marty on you tube ive been trying to master getting clovis points nocked out. not breaking em i just cant figure out when to flute without having to clean up the edge and removing the flute at the same time. peace
-
Nice points, Billy. I really like that style. Looking forward to seeing everybodies points. Wish I could play.
-
hahaha...yeah, sorry bout that jamie. I realized afterward that I didn't have a flea sitting next to the points so you could tell how big....uh...I mean... how small they were!
-
billy, i was just thinking the other day "what ever happened to the point of the month challenge"
glad im not the only one whos been missing it ;)
nice points too, by the way
that top left point,is that mookite jasper?
i like the looks of that one
-
Nice group of points.slowly getting my swing back. :-\ Gonna try to do this one.

im amazed that trying to make an average sized hunting point was so damn hard to do today. ive gotten so accustomed to larger blades i had a bear of a time keeping this one clean. its my version of a levanna. i just notch em so i dont have to repeatedly wrap the head. the levanna is the northeastern version of a late woodlands triangle so its what ive come to use.

I decided to post this pic just to encourage the people that stink at flintknapping like me to still post some pics! ::) Billy said to post even if it's crude, and I would say mine qualifies for that!LOL This point started off much larger, but when I was trying to notch it, I broke off about 2/3 of the bottom. >:( So, I decided I might as well keep chipping away until I get something. I guess you would call it a bird point, even though I saw in the magazine where Billy showed they could be effective on deer sized game as well. Anyway, here it is and it weighs 26 grains.

-
WWWWWWWOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Holey Crap, Paul.
-
Very nice Paul. But if I can make one small suggestion, hide the broken ones farther down in the pile, don't put them right on top for everyone to see. ;) ;D
I'm just yanking your chain of course, I've never knapped anything and you've got some serious talent there.
-
Looks like one of the Cahokia mounds after excavating! :o
-
Ya'll are lookin at the evolution of this knapper. Notice the short stubby notches on a bunch of them. Most of em are gone now in trades or just given away - I'm gonna git back after it one of these days :).
-
:o That is some serious ammo.
-
Wow is right I have been off from knapping but will be back soon... To all who posted pic great job real nice points! I am out of rock and snow too deap waiting for something come in the mail hopefully!!!

That's a goodun! Nice flake scars, symmetry, median ridge - aughta make some meat...
-
Beautiful point! Great job! :)
-
Here are a couple that I managed to get out of some waste flakes. The bigger one is some Flint from TX (I think), the smaller one is Dacite. They are pretty thick and ugly, but at least I had some time to chip. :)

Lookin pretty good Rick. 8)Bob
-
Nice job Rick!
-
Nice points Rick! They don't look that thick to me.

I made these Obsidian tips on Sunday. Used some nodules I collected at Glass Buttes the previous weekend, after the GMLR Horse Ridge Rendezvous. Talking Crow and I were only at Glass Buttes a couple hours before it got dark. However, I got a bucket full of small nodules that will keep me busy for awhile.

Here is a replica that I did of an artifact. The owner indicated he found the projectile in the Columbia River Gorge near Cascade Locks,OR. The original was made of a dark reddish brown rock that looked like jasper. My replica is made from mahogony obsidian and is identical in length (2.5 inch) and thickness, but just tiny bit wider than the original. However, the original was very worn on the edges. I figured the original was a little wider when the edges were sharp. Since it is as easy design, I tried to get nice oblique flakes. The flake scars are not perfectly lined up to center line, but are OK for me. I am not an Archeaologist, but this seems to match the leaf shaped points used on spears or darts by the old Cordilleran Culture or the Cascade phase in the Pacific NW. The original may date to between 5500 - 9000 BC.

I haven't knapped in awhile but the new point challange got me started again. That first obsidian point is one of 2 out of 3 that I broke while notching. I'll shorten it when I calm down. The other one I broke split almost to the tip and isn't pictured. The one of the 3 that didn't break is posted under "Started to knap again". Each picture shows both sides of each point. The first two pictures are of obsidian while the last is George Town and one Keokuk. All from spalls except the Keokuk was a flake.
