Title: February Self BOM - Congrats Keenan!!
Post by: OldBow on March 05, 2010, 10:47:31 pm
Congratulations to Keenan Howard of Bend, OR
His Deflex/Reflex styled Yew Receives the February Honor for Self Bow of the Month

http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php/topic,17111.0.html
This from Keenan:
This is Yew D/R character bow that was made from a highly deflexed stave. The stave had over 6" of natural deflex, so it was best suited for a Deflex/Reflexd bow. Often we are so busy looking for straight or naturally reflexed staves that we overlook the potential that is in natural deflexed staves.
This bow is 68" Tip to Tip and comes in at 61 lbs at 28 inches. It has been tillered out to 30 inches and even pulled to 31 several times. The tips are zebra wood and the finish is minwax polyurethane.
"hey,do you reduce and round the sap wood in the early stages..." -blacktail
"Yes John, I generally roll them fairly soon. The sharper corners are easy to lift a splinter. And if you wait till near draw weight, rounding those corners  can easily bring you in under weight. Yew will heat form very well. Just go slow and try for a deep penetrating heat and use some lard to keep it from drying to much. I always try to bend just a touch past what I want for the end result. Things always settle in some. The The original reflexed area was slightly in front of the handle before tillering.  The nice part is that the inner two thirds of the limbs are almost the same as the original stave. it's high density yew. Not sure what elevation this one came from but it looks to be about 4 rings per 1/16 of an inch. Had to use a magnifier to count. With that as an average it would be around 64 rings per inch. "
Lots of PA Forum Members Loved This Bow:
"WOW Keenan, that one looks fantastic; I'm sure it performs well!" -medicinewheel
"you are a brave man mr. Keenan.. all them bumps and swirls.. wow.. very nicely done." -majsnuff
"I'm amazed at what  you were able to accomplish with a piece of wood that most of us would have discarded. The tips, handle, curves, character - they all flow naturally together to make this superub bow. I tip my hat to the master." -Gordon
"That is one of the nicest bows ever, simple but elegant. I'll bet it shoots great.  great job!"    -oneeye
"beautiful, truely inspirational, love all that contrast between sap and heart wood thanks for sharing." -Hammertime.

 Thanks everyone.

Pappy, Trying to decide witch bows I'm going to ship over that way for the classic.  That one is a little long for me but I may take it for others to shoot. If I  take my halibut or favorite ambush bow, then I would have be very carefull who draws it considering my short draw  25"  ::)
