Title: Glass Butte, Oregon
Post by: Knocker on March 16, 2010, 03:17:09 am
I am searching and not finding any discussion about the upcoming Knap-in.  Who's going this year?  How about you Dave Tiller?  Are you going this year?

I'll be down there.  Last I heard Aaron planned be there.  There's a short thread about it over on Paleo Planet that Emery started but, as you noted, nothing has shown up about it on here.  It seems like the majority of active members on PA are from east of the Rockies.

You didn't look hard enough. There's a long thread  Glass Buttes, Knap In, under Primitive Shoots and Events.

I am going too - hope to meet some of you there.  I plan to be heading down the 19th and coming back on Monday the 22nd.  The weather forcast shows 30 to 60 degrees for Bend over the weekend.  Can someone please remind me of the milepost for the turn-off?

Thanks Mullet!  Found it now - I didn't realize that the site search didn't go down into that Primitive Shoots and events folder unless you clicked in that section...

What have you been up to Brian?  We'll have to do some knapping when I get back. Did you ever get that Locust?

Most recent forecast for Burns is calling for temps mostly in the mid to upper 50s and dry except for Monday when there's a 30% chance of rain or light snow and Thursday when there is a 20% chance of rain but still mid 50s.  I think it's a go.

well just got back from the great PNW late last night.
Too much work but at least I got a chance to play on the weekends.

That second weekend was a blast up at glass buttes!

Nice to meet some of the PNW knappers from this board.
I met aaron, keith and tell and a bunch of more great folks....
And good times were had by all.

Unfortunately all I had with me was my phone camera so pics didnt turn out real great.......

But here are a few....

By the way.... Billy... Met a bunch of guys that know you. Didnt know u lived up there in a past life. Uncle Steve said to say hello...
And a bunch of the other guys told me to tell you.... O wait this is a family oriented board. Guess I'll just have to wait to tell you what they said.
Later,
wade

Just a couple more..

This is what I carried home in my checked suitcase. Man the case weighed a ton with my scaled down knappin kit and all this rock. didnt think they were gonna let me check it.

That big preform is just over 16" long and 2" thick right now.... hope I can take it to the next stage with out having several rocks....

Wade , nice pics and glad you had a good time. I'm sorry I didn't make it out there , My back flared up again and had a rough weekend. Going back in for another MRI.  hoping nothing bad as we already have our tickets for the Classic.  getting around a little better and waiting on the MRI schedule. I may try to ride out there with Dave later in the week but just taking a day at a time right now.

The next two posts are of Emory working out a blade. I sat there and took pictures. He worked this from a big rock into a nice blade in a matter of minutes, maybe 30 at the max.

And my last post of pictures.  This is a carving in Fire Obsidian.  It was carved by one of Emory's friends, I cant remember his name though. It was really really cool.  The pictures are hard to see the fire but it is there. It is some amazing stuff.

Just got back...
great photos everyone, and nice to meet y'all in person. here are some of my photos.
By the way, the photo labeled "Blond Bear" in an earlier post is actulally "goody" Jones- both goody and blond bear run the "Echoes in time" workshops in the willamette valley along with leland gilson...
first photo is emory working a small biface from some really sugary black and red obsidian in the blowing snow storm
second, jake about to take the first flute on a clovis of the same black and red "mick whack"- needless to say- we ran into some huge chunks of this stuff
third, a carved wood skull by terry kramer
fourth, a replica ishi point which killed a deer made by a guy who wouldn't want his name here
and last some dang slim nocks by paul who is better known as a champion slalom skateboarder

second is a fire obsidian point by jerry
last, emory stitching a danish dagger made of "sugary" black and red obsidian- i watched him make the whole thing and have tons of photos. Thanks, emory for all the 'splainin' you do- answering questions and teaching as you go.

N2 and Aaron, Sorry we didn't get out there in time to meet up with you guys. Dave and I got out there Saturday afternoon.had hoped to get there sooner but made a stop at the dacite pit and I couldn't get Dave to give up on a 3 foot long cylindrical rock that we never got. He did get some good boulders for some nice blades but we had to leave the premium one and concede to ground that was holding it.
We spent the afternoon with Emory teaching us the finner arts of dissecting the boulders and I videoed him working a very ugly chunk into a nice respectable 14" blade.  When I get some more time I'll post some of the pics I took as well

Keenan, how about putting the video on here? 8)  Wish I could've been there, but maybe next year.  How is the back?
Have you talked to a Chiropractor about the DRX9000 ?  It is fantastic.  It sure helped me.  I have the 4th and 5th disc almost non existant.  It is great for that and especially for bulging discs.

Wayne, how ya doing.  I told Emory that he made your trip out west a highlight.  I have another MRI with contrast tomarrow and see the surgeon on Friday. Not going to have another surgery,,,,,,,,,at least not till after the Classic.  On the last visit he said to much damage for disk replacement but that I'm a prime target for a new development that will be out in about fifteen years ::)

I'm trying to learn how to post videos. ::) ;D ::)
