Title: Sleeved oak ELB aka Urban bow
Post by: Mudd on March 20, 2010, 01:29:38 am
I set out a few years ago to prove that even without all the normal resources that I could build a bow that would allow me to survive.

Here's what I came up with. I took two 4ft oak dowels and a piece of pvc pipe. I glued the dowels into the pvc pipe then tapered the ends of the oak dowel sort of like an ELB.

Then I covered the pvc with cloth camo tape, then glued on a leather hand wrap.

I think it will draw at or above 30+ lbs at 28".

That's pretty awesome there, Mudd.  I like the ingenuity behind it.  Never seen one crafted like that before... how does it shoot?  Looks cool as heck to me!  :)

It's certainly cool but I can't really see what makes PVC any more primitive then fiberglas!?  ;D ;D ;D

You are correct Frank. I'm sorry for posting it on here.

I wasn't thinking primitive as much as I was trying to think of what materials could I find to build a survival type bow if I had limited access to good wood.

I will not be offended if you pull my thread.

God bless,Mudd

PS I'd guess it pulls around 30# at 28". It doesn't have the best cast but it would help you defend yourself or fill your belly.

That's not PVC - that's "urban bamboo" :o ::)

There are bows from Java in Indonesia that are made with round-ish built-up wood/bamboo handles that are very similar.  The limbs are sometimes bamboo, sometimes straightened strips of waterbuffalo horn.  The whole bow is 36"-48" long.  Take a look at this one from The Grayson Collection:

Your bow is certainly unique. With a little bit of work, you could vastly improve the tiller, and get the bow bending other than just at the grip. I love your Robin Hood cover!!  ;D

Cool bow Mudd. That's thinking out of the box for sure. When a survival situation happens you use whatever you have available.  ;)

PVC pipe, eh? If you wouldn't have told us, that could have passed for a regular wood bow.  ;)

Hey Mudd,

Nice Bow:)  When I make kids pvc flutes I tell them it's "Urban Ivory" so what you really have is an Asian Tusk bow!

Interesting project, it could make a quick kids bow. It seems to bend a lot right in the center, how is the hand shock?

BTW, I moved this topic to a more appropriate area.

The hand shock is barely noticeable. The tiller isn't terrible. It can be made quickly. Be forewarned if you make one after its dry and you start shooting it, it will sound like its breaking but it doesn't. I guess it glue making the sound. I've had this one for 10 to 15 yrs and it shoots exactly as it did the day it was 1st shot.

God bless,Mudd

I like your ingenuity.  If it's functional than it has value in my book.  Dig the hat - where'd you find that at?
