Title: Mullet ,Bonepile and jcinpc score some coral
Post by: jcinpc on May 22, 2010, 04:15:21 pm
We had a great day on the river. We all loaded the canoes and kayaks with coral and ledge flint. Roger has more pics but he lives 2+hours away and I`m only 15 minutes from the area so I uploaded first. These are just from my load, Roger got the biggest baddest coral head today and Eddie score some killer ledge and sweeeet candy coral

That is a whole mess of fine looking coral. Nothing like going with good friends and finding some good rock.

Heck yea! That was fun, but man am I sore. Jeff, I think I got that sweet candy coral from you. And that spot will definitely be a secret. I paddled behind Roger and Jeff and that canoe didn't have 4" of freeboard. Rogers head was so big it took the three of us to get it in the boat.

Oh, here's my haul and some of the Candy, Thanks, Jeff.

Yeah that was some kind of haul,a river rock safari for sure
(http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk33/Bonepile/Alifiasafari002.jpg)
Here's Jeff and Eddie hard at it
(http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk33/Bonepile/Alifiasafari006.jpg)
A  peice of killer coral
(http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk33/Bonepile/Alifiasafari010.jpg)
Hard at work trying to keep up wth the rockhounds
(http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk33/Bonepile/Alifiasafari011.jpg)
Now all we have to do is load it in the boats, unload it at the dock, load it in the trucks, and unload it at home, nothing to it.
All that's left is to bust it up

Man, it looks like you guys really made a haul !  I wish I could have gone with you, but I had a family get together to go to yesterday.
But I would sure like to go before I leave for Montana full time.  Man the water looks nice too.  I don't have a canoe, so I would have to borrow one.  Looks like some really nice stuff.  Should make some beautiful points, and blades, after heat treating.  Have you ever done anything with it unheat treated?  Must be like working that unheated Texas stuff !  Man that is a sweet load there.  I guess you guys "were" sore after loading, unloading , and reloading, and unloading all that.  Man, I sure do want to make a trip like that before I leave.

you ever tried to get a 300lb+ head of coral OUT of a canoe? at a dock in about 5 ft of water?. I had to get on my knees and lean opver to get the big ones out then with Rogers monster head of candy coral left, we decided to leave it in the canoe and drag the whole thing uphill.
It was funny as I was the youngest one there, Eddie and Roger are figuring out who is the oldest between the 2, meaning they are to old to pick up the big stuff ;D..... When you run across a deposit like this age doesnt matter, you feel like a young buck and are happy to have a chance to score the harder to find coral and even harder to find Ledge.

;Ddefinition of luck.....When preperation meets opportunity ;D
this is our backyard and between Eddie and myself and all the artifacting we have done with over 50 years combined we just happen to know where to look for some goodies every now and then :)

spalled a head this morning and a piece of the ledge I have left, that was gone as soon as I got home :)

Wow, that last piece looks like you are looking into an aquarium !!:o 8)
Man, that is a great haul.  As for Roger's coral head, you had a sledge with you......sooooo, why not spall it a bit till it was a bit More manageable........? ;)  Or......he found it, he can haul it!  ;D Unless he was going to split it with you guys........ ::)  Well you being the youngest, should have been able to just manhandle that little thing on up the hill, with no problem. ::)  You should be ashamed of yourself, making those old guys, have to drag a canoe full of heavy coral up a hill ! :(tsk, tsk, tsk.!  But I guess in the end, it just comes down to the coral...... ;D  That is some great stuff there.  I wish I could have come with you. :o

I left my big spall hammer at home and all he had was a little copper hammer, enough to take an edge off. YEah I am the youngest at 43 now and have hauled some 500lb+ boulders of coral all by myself. It has taken me up to 5 hours to get just 1 head into my truck before. Roger happens to live in the "rock challenged" area of FLorida so I dont mind hauling some heavy ones for him.
No if Roger sucked real bad at knapping then I would have talked him out of it, but for 3 years of knapping the dude has it down. I remeber the first time I met him, he drove 2 hours to meet me in a Walmart parking lot to but some coral, I bet I gave him as much as he bought ;D

We also dont like to leave evidence of any rock being there for specific reasons ::)

Post by: mullet on May 24, 2010, 09:45:48 pm
Like Jeff said about luck. There really wasn't much luck involved except tripping over a head in a spot I had never looked in before. And spalling stuff out leaves too much evidence for some other rock hunter. 8)

Just take the spalls, and dump them where there isn't any coral...... ;)  Let em look the area over for awhile...... ;D

All this talk about old Roger,I'll tell ya what I felt a little older the day after that's for sure. But I did get that big coral head out of my canoe all by myself.I just knocked a bucket of spalls off it and it came right out ;).Wish we had a dock photo,we didn't have all the loot unloaded and the end of the dock was below the water line .After we carried it all up to the trucks everyone in the parking lot thought we were a bunch of crazy prospectors

Russ,  rocks are kinda scarce down here. The ones in the river is limerock and really smooth, unless there is fossil rib bones stuck in it. We just found this spot dragging the canoes through a rapid area when I felt a rough rock. I pulled it up and it was a coral head.

It was just luck of the draw. For 10 years I've just stumbled and dragged through this area without checking on what I had been walking through. Kinda like not fishing at the boat landing; It's got to be better away from where you put in.

also we find rocks in our creeks and other deeper cutting rivers. Its kinda shallow here in Fl. so alot of fossils and corals are exposed, you just have to find the area

Wow thats cool its not like me using Google earth finding a vein then going to look for it.  That is amazing how u found that and also much prettier rock than what I have here in NY.  The GOVT just shut down the Normanskill quarry and no ones aloud near it!  Aint that a pile of crap!  Now I gotta go and search outcrops and rivers again.  I wonder how much is down there?  Im gonna have to give u a shout next time I get down that way.  I think rock hunting is almost more addicting than Knapping isnt it?  Maybe its me..lol  Great story and awesome coral!

Have a good day!

That's a fine little point there Roger - course everything you make is fine ;D. Russ, I'm the same way. Have more fun I think finding the rocks than I do turning them into something. If I ever get around FL again....

the best luck I have had in finding coral WAS to follow the construction sites in different counties that I knew were ancient coral beds. When that slowed down so did my collecting of coral at that time. I found a killer coral site that covered about 60 acres, I found it when they dug for the water mains, I got about 5 tons of good coral there.About 3 ft down inthe trench was a 2 ft thick wall of ancient spalls that ran over 100 yards long.fire pits dotted that place, they were everywhere. I miss stuff like that. I took Claude and his girls there and we had a blast.
