Hello everyone, here is a replica Eastern Woodland bow that I just finished up. It is Black Locust, 63 inches long and pulls 45 at 26. It is 1 1/4 wide at the handle and tapers down to 3/4 at the tips. It keeps just a bit of reflex after unstringing and relaxing. I burnished it and stained it with some red clay. I stained the tips and handle area with blackberries and have heated it and rubbed in several coats of deer tallow for the finish. I made the string from yucca fibers. It's the first I've tried and it is holding up fine so far. I'm going to experiment with other strings also, rawhide, sinew and dogbane. I plan to hunt with it this fall with replica arrows of course!

very nice bow Alan , i like the lines and the tiller, hope you do well this season with it !! hows black locust to work with , i havent tried it yet
-
That looks nice, Alan. Yucca strings hold up real good.
-
Very Nice and Very primitve........Great tiller......awesome job Alan.
How did you learn to make the primitve string? I would like to try
-
Cool bow and string, Alan. Bring it to the camp-o-rama if you come. I hope you do. The yucca string looks pretty small in diameter compared to other natural fiber strings I've seen.
I've been thinking about a similar bow from the locust stave you gave me at the camp-o-rama 2 years ago.

Woodland,
Damned fine bow sir, Like everything about it. Hope you do well on the deer, that will be a real "extra" to suit such a fine weapon.

-
Nice bow Roamer. I believe BL was meant to be a d-bow. And, you did a fine job with it. Makes me want to finish the stave I started a year ago.
-
Very nice simple and effective. I like it. :)

What a nice looking primitive bow. The tiller looks awesome on that weapon, you must have treated it right for sure looking at the unbraced profile.
-
Thanks for the kind words everyone!
ken75, I think locust is really nice to work with, similar to working osage I think.
straightarrow, I guess I learned by reading and forums like this one. In one of the TBB volumes there is a chapter on strings that explains a lot.
Pat, I'm planning to be there and I'll bring it along.

Very nice. Tiller looks dead on. Hope you have success with the meat end of it. Lets see the arrows you'll be using.
-
Great looking bow. Like the Cherokee diamond nocks. My first bow was just like that.
-
Simple and beautiful! Tiller is perfect! Nice job.
-
Now that is a beauty. I love the tiller on your full draw pic. I have been working more with D bows myself lately. Got a couple of Locust staves so now I know what I will do with them. Thanks for sharing.
-
Primitive, simple and effective! Very well done Alan. Best of luck with it on the whitetails this fall!

Very very nice allen. I really like it.
Funny I was just playing with some yucca this weekend teaching kait how to twist up fiber and was thinking on making a bow string.
Your tiller looks great. Nice bow. Hope you take a deer with it this year.

I would love to build this exact bow. You said its 1.25" wide at the handle. How far up the limb did you keep it 1.25"
-
Thanks again everyone!
bigcountry, the limbs are 1.25" out to almost midlimb so just about 14 inches out from the center of the bow.

That's a beauty.Great job. God Bless
-
OUTSTANDING!!!!!!!
Thats what this is all about.
-
Yep, what everyone else already said! This is the type of bow Locust is meant to be IMO. Is the back completely flat and if so, did you have to de-crown it? Thanks for sharing!

Stunning! Absolutely A+.
How 'bout a build along for the yucca fiber string? I would be interested for sure!
Mark
-
I second the string build along,.....please ;D
-
Thanks everyone!
CP, no the back is not flat, it slightly crowned. This stave was from a log that was about 8" diameter.
Mark, I was thinking about making another anyway and saving this one for a backup so maybe I'll do that.

NICE ;D That is the kind of bow I love seeing. Very nice work, tiller is right on. Good luck making some meat with it.
-
Sorry I missed this one, I was on a bit of a hiatus. That's a beauty, that tiller looks superb. I've been fideling around with starting to try making strings myself. I've been disassembling machine spun hemp cord and seperating the fibers and putting them away, I'm thinking I'll put together a drop spindle, like shown in the strings section in the TBB2, I believe...
Anyhow, you did an awesome job, very nicely done, I like you you used the berries for some staining also.
-
Yeah that is sweet looking I haven't found to many photos of a black locust D bow with all the angles. I'm a bit like Parnell have to take a break from here now and then or I don't get anything else done. It also makes for exciting reading when everything you see is new.
-
Very inspiring! Will be in the running for my vote for sure!
-
Thanks guys!
