It is worth the trip for the Saturday night feast!...and we TN boys will be doing some pickin after that.
Ya all need to bring the whole family. You won't find a better host than Pappy, and the course and facilities are as good as you are gonna find anywhere.

Pappy
-
Pappy, its about a 10 and half hour drive to your place from here, thats not that bad I guess, I'll have to see what the wife thinks about it.... ::)
-
Ryan, we'd really love to have you and the wife join us! Might let you help out teaching some newbies if you find some free time on your hands! ;D
I'd like to talk shop with you as well, we really like to continue to learn from other bowyers and their techniques. Might could bring one of those big recurve forms with you to compare to ours. ;)
Really would like anyone out there to visit us especially for this shoot, regardless of your experience level. There is a lot of bow making going on in a short period of time.
-
The Wife gave me the ok as long as we can come up with the extra cash to come down...she put in for those days off of work! ;D
-
Pappy- I am a fellow Clarksvillian, and my son and I are very interested in learning about traditional archery. We would like to make it to the Classic this year and learn about making bows and shooting. Since we are both beginners/novices at this what would we be able to do? My son will be 10 years old and is very excited about this, as am I.
-
Tomgunz, I'll give you some information and I'm sure Pappy will add more. Pappy and I are the two in the club most involved with the bow making part of the shoot. The actual Tn. Classic May shoot is for traditional equipment only...longbows, recurves, and selfbows all without use of sights. As a side event of the shoot, we have what we call the Selfbow Challenge.
Basically the "Challenge" is starting out with an untillered bow stave (tillering is the process of thinning and balancing the limbs basically to a finished bow) without string notches cut in it, and over the three day weekend make a bow and shoot the tournament with the new bow. It is a special class in that you're only competing against others that have made bows during the "Challenge". You can bring your own bow stave, or purchase one from the club for a small amount while they last. We've had people start out with a split log that has to be worked all the way through to a finished bow, to actually starting with a roughed in bow stave (no string notches). With the short amount of time available, I would recommend having the bow roughed in without notches cut if possible to start off with.
We have probably a dozen or so vises/work benches with some tools such as rasps and scrappers for loan while they last. We have strings pre-made of various lengths. There are several band saws that mainly Pappy and I use as needed during the event. We attempt to help and give direction all we can, but it gets pretty busy at times when perhaps half the people have never made a bow. For those experienced bowyers, if you have room please bring some of your own equipment such as benches/vises, tools, etc. as we do have a limited supply. For the most part all is under roof though open air, and their are lights...we've had people working on bows well past midnight before!
What we strive to accomplish is that at minimum everyone has a good time, and new folks to bow making leave with a much better understanding of the bow making process. For some it may be their only involvement with the sport, but we've had a lot of people start a new and enjoyable hobby from this event. I'm one of them myself from five years ago! I had been shooting traditional equipment for close to twenty years, but had never made a bow. Now I enjoy the bowmaking as much as I have a life time of hunting with bows.
We have vendors at this shoot selling traditional supplies, so you should be able to purchase any accessories you need. There is a practice coarse with set distances (bales), as well as a free 3D 20 target course better then many clubs main courses. Also have the main course of the actual shoot involving I think 40 targets. Primitive camping is available at the club, 1st come 1st serve. We also have concession's including breakfast and lunch. There is a potluck dinner with a lot of wild game on Saturday night, also country musicians that night around the concessions area.
Few people actually completely finish a bow during the event such as properly sealing the bow, grip, etc. But the majority of people have gotten their bows tillered and shooting so that they can shoot the tournament. We give direction on how to totally complete any bows not finished. I'm sure I've missed something, Pappy knows all the details much better then I do. But I hope I've given you and anyone interested at least an idea of what we're offering. Hope to see you in May!
p.s. There is information about the Tn. Classic in PA including Pappy's phone # for further details. :)
-
Thanks for the information!
-
Tom, you're welcome. ;)
-
I'm am not sure how many of you folks plan on making this but I have had a lot of responce
So when we get together be sure and let me know you are one of the P.A. family.I want to get a picture of all of us together ,put some names with it and post for those that don't come to see. Can't wait.Got a e mail from Graemek from down under and said he was coming .Looking forward to meeting all.
Pappy

Anyone making a family trip out of this great event and plan to spend any extra days in Nashville (we fondly refer to it as Nashvegas) let me know. I can give you some ideas on fun places to go/eat/see etc. Nashville is about a 45 min drive (if I remember right, Pappy can correct me). But I warn you once you set foot on the Twin Oaks/Pappy's farm place you may just never leave. Ryano, your wife will be so pleased to use this event for her days off. She made the right choice! Plus I am sure she scored some points with you and if I were her, I would milk it a bit!

Thanks Marie,we are busy trying to get ready.I think if the weather will cooperate it will be the
best ever. Are you going to try and make it at least for a day,We really enjoy seeing you,You need
to bring that boy along and let him shoot the bow he made.Yall for sure need to be in the picture
Might help it out some. :)

I am planning on coming. My kids are with their father that weekend however I might be able to get that changed. The one who has been begging me to come is my 10 year old daughter. She has the gift of being able to create just about anything she wants to with her hands. I just talked with Sarah in the office today about her traveling here to the event as well. We will let you know if she is coming. She really wants to be there. I am banking on that pretty spring weather that Tennesse often delivers that time of year. I can still remember how good that food smelled on Sat. last year. You can try to describe how pretty your place is, how friendly every one is and how good that food smelled, but you just have to experience it don't you!
Marie
-
Well a little over a month away and we have already began to get ready. Can't wait it is going to be a blast ;D.Marie looks like we are going to have several from here so if you make it I would love you you to get us together and get a picture. You can't take it cause you got to be in it but you could set it up.Life is good. :)
Pappy
-
Is it ok to bring a bow stave 95% complete, finish it there and shoot it in competitiion?
Thanks
-
I'm gonna try to load up the family and head that way if nothing happens between now and then.
-
Yes you can finish it there,If you haven't cut the nocks yet you can get in the selfbow challenge,
if you have already cut the nocks you can finish it and shoot in the selfbow class. That is great to here you may make it Hillbilly, looks like we will have several from this place there.Yall be sure and let me know who you are if I haven't seen you before so we can all get together for a picture. This is going to be so cool. ;D
Pappy
-
Pappy, I'm the ugly one ;D Not quite as ugly as Pat, but he's got a 15-year headstart on me. Do you usually have plenty of space to throw a tent out? It'll probably be late Friday afternoon before I can get there.
-
O ya got plenty of room.See ya then.We had some folks from N.C. last year, they had something to do with the shoot in Hickory.Don't remember there names but they both built selfbows and said
they were on a scouting mission to check it out and planed to bring more this year.Needless to
say they had a good time.1 of the guys built glass bows.See ya soon.
Pappy
-
Hillbilly, glad to hear you're planning to come.
Neanderthal, you could go ahead and finish up that last 5% and start you another one at the Classic if you'd like. ;D
Marie, glad to hear you plan on making it again this year. I finally got over my period of procrastination and got my subscription renewed...three years before I'll have that particular procrastination opportunity again. ;)
-
The Wife gave me the ok as long as we can come up with the extra cash to come down...she put in for those days off of work! ;D
ryan, are you driving thru maryland, down I-95 south? you're from PA right?
-
I may be riding with Dick. IWe talked last night and it will depend on one other person and what particular day. I'll be the guy that is just a little bit uglier than Hillbilly...and probably have a ceeeeegar in my teeth.
Marius, If you're coming, the PBR is on me! ;) Pat
-
it all depends if can work out the logistics. i'd love to come down. i happen to be in edgewood (near aberdeen) MD, during that time. i guess it would be easiest if i flew into nashville and somebody could pick me up there, if it's not too far. plus i don't have any camping gear in the states. i could probably mail some of my stuff to a friend ahead of time and then mail it back when i return. i'd love to participate in that bow challenge if pappy or greg could rough out a stave for me ;D
-
Marius, hope you can make it. We'll find you a stave, I've got a shed full, just name your poison.
-
hillbilly, that's very kind of you. something that doesn't grow in germany would be cool, like HHB, osage, vine maple, whatever you guys come up with (just not too snaky. with only 4 bows that lived and one casualty ;D my experience is limited) also, if you could rough it out, it would be great, since i won't have a lot of tools with me, nor time, to finish it for the tournament ;D
this forum never ceases to amaze me. you guys are the best.
-
Isn't logistics your cup of tea anyway? I will have plenty of room in my tent for you, Marius. You will need something to sleep on though. Wood and tools should not be a problem. Getting you to drink Papst Blue Ribbon beer is another situation, all together :o . Pat
-
pat, you're grossly mistaking if you think you can scare me away with PBR. ;D
on the tent, that's a very generous offer, my friend and i might have to take you up on it. my wife claims i snore though, so now's the time to reconsider ;D
by the way, how far is this event from nashville? since i intend to fly in, would it be feasible to take a taxi to twin oaks?
-
I emailed Kenneth trying to get him to drive out with me. It is about 22 hours, but if I can pick up some wood it would be worth it. If I bring my truck you might notice a few more trees missing from the side of the highway. ;D Justin
-
It is about 45 min-1hr from the airport if I am not mistaken. Pappy would you say that is correct?
-
Ya it's about an hour, depending on the time of day. This is great to see all this intrest,me and Greg won't know what to do with all you guys/gals down there with us.I know we have never meet most of yall but you do feel like family.Tools shouldn't be a problem and I have cots and bags.justin we hang pochers in Tennessee
-
justin we hang pochers in Tennessee
Man you sound like family too. ;D Justin
-
I've got an 8 man dome tent I can set up if anyone needs a place to sleep. Also have cots, sleeping bags, etc.
Marius, if you can make it, we'll see you have a dry place to lay your head! :)
It's exciting hearing all you folks are going to try and make it. Really looking forward to meeting each of you and maybe picking up some new techniques...yall are a talented group! ;)
-
greg, ain't much you could learn from me ( i think you guys already master drinking beer ;D )
i may have mentioned it before, but you guys are the best. i, also, can't wait to meet y'all in person.
-
Pat....if ya can see thru it....it aint beer. :P
Brian
-
I guess I can get a stave or two there? ??? When is everybody showing up? Justin
-
Justin, Did you talk Kenneth into coming with you? Pat
-
He didn't know if he could get away that long. He wants to think about it for a few days. He was right in the middle of hunt applications when I talked to him. Justin
-
I'll drop him an e-mail. Will be great to meet you and would love to see Kenneth again. Pat
-
Justin, we have 30 or more roughed out bows of hickory. We've got to reduce them in thickness again, and will try and have them reflexed. Gary Davis will have osage bows spliced in the handle and reflexed ready to tiller.
After that we'll have to see what we can round up if need be. I'd bring your favorite tools if you can, we got quite a bit on a first come first serve basis. We've averaged over 30 people each of the past two years working on bows, looks like we could easily beat that this year. :)
-
Thanks Greg, that is what I needed to know. Justin
-
justin ,you drive all the way from Utah,I will make sure you go back with something special. ;D
Pappy
-
Man I wish I could afford to come see ya all. I'm saving my pennies hoping to build a garage/workshop this summer.
perhaps next year me and momma will take a southern vacation.
DanaM
-
Love to have you and promise we will make you feel at home.
Pappy
-
Hope Greg isn't in charge of cooking. :o ;D
DanaM
-
Dana,
Every great chef learns from experimenting, I just didn't have a lot of experience cooking osage! ;D
Most of those meals in the "Life is Good" thread were my dutch oven creations...of course if you keep enough liquid in there you can't hardly go wrong. Now that I think about it, that's what went wrong when I was cooking the osage...ran out of water! ;D
-
Greg I wonder how PBR would work for steamin that osage, I know it makes for a good bender ;D
Dana
-
Greg I wonder how PBR would work for steamin that osage, I know it makes for a good bender ;D
Dana
My question is would you be able to get the tips lined up. Justin
-
Pappy, it looks like I'm going to. It would cost a little less to fly, but by the time you figure in shipping staves/bows home its about the same. The time with lay overs is not a huge difference either. This way I can bring all my tools and other goodies. I think Ill make more friends if I fill the truck with obsidian and bring it out. ;D If anybody lives between Ut. and Tn. and wants a ride they are welcome. I have room for 3 more full size guys comfortably. The ride is free, so nobody has an excuse now. Justin
-
It looks like I will be picking up Brian "Koan" in Mo. on the way. Unless his work wont let him off. We will be in Tn. on Thursday. I still have room for 1 or 2 more and their tools if anybody else wants to hitch on. Justin
-
I heard from Kenneth tonight and it looks like he too much going on so he won't make it. I'm looking forward to going and to meeting everyone I thought I already knew. I hope I'm not disappointed! ;D Pat
-
Me to Pat. ;D Just kidding guys. Can't wait.
Pappy
-
Pat, when you going down? We could start a convoy ;D
-
Steve. I'm not sure. I will probably be riding with Dick and he will pick me up in Asheville somewhere. So whenever he says he will be there I will meet him. I need to find a place to leave my truck for the weekend. :-\ Pat
-
You could probably leave it in one of the overflow lots on campus if you needed to.
-
That would be good. Is there easy access off of I-40? I will have to give Dick directions. Pat
-
Pat, it's about 10 minutes off I-40. Probably safer than leaving it somewhere like the mall or WalleyWorld, though.
-
Well, Mojam is 8 hours drive fer me. Clarksville ,Tn is about 5 hours from Nashville, In. I'm gonna try and make it.
Is there lotsa room fer tents or do I need to get there friday evening to be sure of getting a spot?
Gotta call a buddy and see if he wants to go.
It'll be good to meet all ya'll.
Chris
-
minuteman there is plenty of space we will find you a place to set up
-
We spent a good portion of the day Saturday cutting fire wood for the Tn. Classic. Promise none of it was osage! ;D
Got to keep our camping guests comfortable! ;)
-
Got the vacation time, got lucky. Be there with bells on! Want me to bring some of that good Mo. homebrew beer Pappy?
Brian
-
You the man Brian. Can't wait to meet you guys ,done meet the Gals. ;D
Pappy
-
Brian, I'll trade you some homemade wine for homebrew beer! ;)
-
We aint got none brewed up of our own right now but we got a great micro brewery in town. I will bring a couple gallons with me, if'n I can keep Justin out of it. :D Hope ya like the dark stuff. Greg, havent found a wine that agrees with me yet, but Im willin to try again. ;)
Brian
-
Y'all need to build a still for a club project ;D
-
Brian,
I used to make a lot of it, but the acid does a number on me. I havn't made any for a couple of years, I'm still using off of old batches. :)
-
I have a converted 5 gallon milk can with the top drilled out and a pipe shoved in. Oh wait, that is for making home made root beer. SORRY ;D Justin
-
Hillbilly, Pappy works for a beer company...always seems to be old beer that didn't sale that needs to be put to good use. I always use it for putting in with some of my dutch oven meals...some of the other guys seem to want to drink the stuff for some reason. ??? ;D
-
greg, that's because primitive archers are environmentally sensitive. here's a study that proves it:
"A 2006 study found that the average primitive archer walks about 900 miles
per year.
Another study found that archers drink an average of 22 gallons of
beer per year.
That means, on average, primitive archers get approximately 41 miles per
gallon. "
-
I need to do some checking, I must need a tune up,I don't think I am getting that kind of mileage.
Pappy ;D
-
Pappy, I think you're putting the miles in...maybe just require a higher intake which reduces your MPH. ;D
-
Maybe you are like one of those fancy sports cars Pappy. Maybe you need a higher octane. Justin
-
justin, that high octane makes me spit and sputter and maybe even ping a little and the mileage gets worse. ;D
Pappy
-
This shoot is getting close, can someone post directions or a address?
Thanks
Ralph
-
From which direction are you coming? Pappy can give you great directions but he spends his weekends out on the property. I know he is getting everything all ready for this crew. I will look up what I have at the moment. GregB or someone else can pipe in as well....
-
It would also be great to know how many from this forum site are planning on being there. I think Pappy wants to get a P.A. group pic if possible. Also if you all haven't given Pappy or Twin Oaks a heads up that you are going to be there make sure you do. Sounds like they are working very hard to make sure all goes well. They are tops in hospitality! Maybe pick a meeting site/time for a group pic.
-
I'll be coming through Nashville. I go to Clarksville then what?
-
24 west toward Clarksville exit 19 turn left at end of ramp go to dead end and you will see sign turn right and follow signs you are about 8 miles from there and have to make a couple of turns
-
Marie there looks like there is going to be 12/15 from the forum there, this is going to be great.
Welch2 like knothead said just head toward Clarksville/Fort Campbell on 24w to exit 19 get off go left over the interstate and go till you have to make a right or left .Go right and look for a big sign about 5 miles on the left it will be a 4x8 that will say TwinOaks.Turn left at the sign and go about
a mile or so and look for a twinOaks sign and a Smith Salvage sign.Turn left go about another mile and look for the same signs and make a right and look for the next sign about a mile or so and turn left at the sign witch is the drive into the club.If you are camping and the bottom isn't full drive on down the drive and you can't miss us.See ya soon. ;D
Pappy
-
If you're coming from up north and on I-24 going in the direction of Clarksville/Nashville, take exit 11 and turn right off the end of the ramp. Travel 2-3 miles until you get to a large intersection which will be the first traffic lights after you left I-24. Turn left at the traffic light onto HWY 41-A and you'll have a Walmart on your left and a FoodLion and Wendy's on your right. Travel 6-7 miles and be on the lookout for a large water-tower on your right off the road with East Montgomery Utilitie's (something like that) written on the side. Oak Plains Road is a right turn at the end of that field w/water tower and will have the signs directing to Twin Oaks Archery Shoot. :)
-
Thanks Greg, that is what I needed. I would have had to go to Nashville and turn around and come back to get there if you hadn't posted the directions for comming the other way. Justin
-
You're welcome Justin, don't want the buff horn...I mean you to get lost! ;D
You bringing your pet gopher snake with you? You might should leave him at home, I doubt he would live to leave Tn. ;)
-
Its pegged to a board. Cody skinned him out and dried him. It is the first time he has skinned a snake, so he is going to put it on his first bow. Justin
-
That's cool, how did he like skinning it?Some folks don't care for it much.I always cut the head off first myself. ;D
Pappy
-
Blood and guts and a 10 year old boy, he thought he was in heaven. I cut the heads off anything poison. On the harmless variety it serves as a handle. :D Justin
-
I think that boy has great potential! :)
-
He kind of reminds me of me when I was his age. I guess I'll have my hands full soon enough. ;D Justin
-
Just wait Justin.............. ;) :D :D :D :D :D.bob
-
Bob, I have a secret weapon. ;D Primitive Archery ;D If you hunt with a kid, you wont hunt for a kid. ;) Justin
-
finally got the trip and my leave approved!!!!! pat, start chilling the PBR, pappy or greg, drag out the cot and the bag...i'm comming. can't wait to meet the greatest bunch of rednecks on the planet. looking forward to meet the gentlemen from the north as well. ;D
-
GREAT NEWS, Marius. The PBR will be cold!!! ;D...as long as I don't step on Pappy's toes with the wrong brewer. ::) And don't you mean the greatest bunch of redneck gentlemen ;) on the planet?
Now we will have to call this event..."The Tennessee International Classic and Cat Fight". Sounds like a fun weekend followed by headaches! ;D Pat
-
PatB, I am going to have the camper there. I will also have an extra air mattress cot and sleeping bag and pillow for Marius if you need it. I will get a hold of you this week, Mon. or Tues. and we can formalise plans to meet. How far are you from I40? Could I meet you at your house? Would that be convenient for you? If Vinson comes can he park his truck at your house etc?
Dick Bernier
-
Dick, I live about an hour from I-40. You guys are welcome to come here but I thought I'd meet you at River Ridge Mall, just off I-40 in Asheville and leave my truck there. It doesn't matter to me. I have 25 acres so there is plenty of room for Vinson's truck. ;) We can discuss it this week when you call. Pat
-
dick, i'll happily accept your generous offer ;D
-
PatB, just as soon as I get a hold of Vinson I will call, no later than Wednesday.
Dustybear, Its a done deal. When are you flying into Nashville?
Dick Bernier
-
dick, i'll arrive thursday (flying in from philly) and got to fly back on sunday.
as soon as i got the flights locked in, i'll post the times and flight numbers. maybe somebody could pick me up at the airport? ;D
-
Pat, I'm gettin' senile and forgot to tell you that I checked with the college and they basically said that you can leave your truck there, but they wouldn't be responsible for it.
-
Thanks Steve, I'll see what Dick wants to do and go from there. It might be easiest for him just to meet me at the mall. If he's pulling a camper, the easier the better. We'll see. Pat
-
Marius, really glad to hear you're getting to come! Lookin' forward to meeting all of you "Redneck Gentlemen". I'm sure we'll all get along just like pea's in a pod. ;D
Pat, Pappy's pretty sensitive about what beer is drank at Twin Oaks because of his patronage to his employer. He will just kiddingly give you a hard way to go. Might ought to have some huggies to camoflage those cans. ;)
We spent a good part of the day yesterday and some on Friday reflexing hickory blanks. I think we're going to be further along on our blanks than any year so far. We should have all of them straightened and reflexed ahead of time. I don't know if any of you guys are interested in hickory or not. If you are let Pappy and I know and we'll try to set some of the better ones aside for you with your name on them. :)
-
Greg, I wouldn't insult the host so Marius will have to suffer the whole weekend without PBR. ;D I'm sure he will be heart broken :'( but he's a big boy and it's about time he acted that way. ;D
I found a few pieces of birch bark long enough to cover a limb. It's coming with me. ;) Pat
-
i don't know pat, i might have to reconsider my participation. i mean, you can't lure a man in and then not keep your promisses. ;D
-
No problem,Pat we sell PBR,Not much but some ;D I can't wait this is going to be a blast.
Pappy
-
So what is the official politically correct brand of beer for the Tn. Classic? Hope it ain't Coors ;D :o ;D
-
As long as it don't have eagles on it that would be A.B. we sell it.That is Miller,Coors P.B.R
and almost any import there are.Don't worry I give guests I reprive. ;D
Pappy
-
Pappy you remind me of my friend Ray, he's been workin for a Miller beer distributor for about 25 years,
No Bud fer him either. Forget the PBR swamp water guys get some Strohs ;D
DanaM
-
Dana, Spell Strohs backwards. That is what it is made of! ;D Pat
-
Dats an oldie Pat, when I was kid growing up all anyone drank up here was PBR or Strohs, the poor people drank Blatz.
Now everyone drinks Lite, Bud, Lite(might as well be water), Mic Ultra(yuck) or some other preppy concoction.
DanaM
-
Growing up we drank PBR. I didn't hear about Strohs until I visited my sister and her husband in Chicago in the early 70s. That's when Chris told me about spelling it backwards. He was from Winnetka, Ill. Come to think of it, the early 70s was the oldies. ;D Pat
-
Actually I'm not drinking any beer at present, I was drinking a bit too much so I had to cut it out.
But my favorite brand has always been FREE BEER ::)
DanaM
-
speaking of which, i just looked up the customs limitations on alcohol: i'm allowed to bring 1 liter of beer. don't they know a german won't even make it thru customs on one liter? ;D
-
Dana, I don't drink very much myself...usually just a water man. But when I do occasionally drink a beer, it's the "free" type you were referring to. ;D
-
Pat, forgot to thank you for planning to bring the birch bark...thanks! :)
-
Greg, The planning part is over...its coming!!! ;) Pat
-
OK, planning phase is getting hot for me now. i just noticed i could fly in wednesday, after work or thursday morning. which one would increase my chances of getting picked up at the nashville airport? and, oh yeah, could somebody PLEASE pick me up? and maybe drop me off on sunday? PRETTY PLEASE ;D
-
Marie had offered to pick some up but if she can't we will get it done.If we need to do it Wend. evening would be better. The selfbow challenge starts Thurs. morning and it looks like me and Greg are going to be busy.Have you got any times yet on Wend. and sunday evening.I will ask Marie and see from there.I am off from Friday on and won't be near a comp. so we need to get it figured out before Frid. morning.
Pappy
-
Marius what are your options timing wise Wed. eve. and/Thurs. morn.? You flying in Southwest?
-
Pappy, What is the food situation at the Classic? On site venders or does the club serve food or do we bring our own? What about water, showers etc? Thanks Pat
-
What Pat, you going to start taking showers now. ;D I was curious about food too. I kind of like to eat. Justin
-
I will be leaving Nasville Wed. evening to go to the club and could pick some one up at airport Ron
-
Justin. It doesn't bother me to go without a shower but it might offend others. ;) but food, drink and companionship I do need! ;D so a shower might be necessary. Pat
-
The club will have breakfast Friday/Sunday and the consession will be open Friday around Noon/1:00
We will have food Friday night and a big pot luck Sat. night.I am sure me and Greg will have something around the fire Thursday, you may want to bring something to munch on till Friday. There are stores close by if you don't want to pack a bunch of stuff. We will have drinks there all the time.No showers but there is a nice creek,Pat if you get to bad I will take you in the cabin.Ha!!! ;D We can get or heads together and cook up something for Thursday night for all that will be there.Knothead told me to pass along ,that no one will go hungry. There is always something going on.Dustybare how about Sam Adams. :)
Pappy
-
I'm sure I'll do some cookin' Thursday night, I've been practicing up a lot lately. Remember the scorched osage pics? ;)
We keep a fire going right next to where all the bow-building takes place. That's where you've seen all the "Life is Good" pictures taken. We have plenty of firewood, any of yall want to bring your dutch ovens and share your creations with us...we'll be more then happy to ablige you! Just make yourselfs at home! :)
-
What Greg said. :)
Pappy
-
Got any pickin' and grinnin? do we need to arm ourselves with git-tars? Don't seem like I've been to a primitive event yet that didn't have some pickin' goin' on somewhere.
-
Pappy, I have a shower in my pop-up and as PatB and I are comming together, ::) he probably will be sleeping in it, over it, around it or on it. :-\ It only holds about 30 gal. of water. Is there a hose near by to fill it up if "need" be? I don't think the "need be", but you never know about these mountain men and their showers. :o I also have room for Dustybear to sleep in it or if he prefers in a tent with air mattress cot etc. Usually 30 gal is sufficient for 2 or 3 showers if we do not run the water constantly. Just trying to plan ahead for these shower wimps. ;D
Dick
-
Got some going on Friday night and a big show Sat. night.Bring it on and you can join in.Chad
the SingingBoyer is going to do some both nights and is going to some of his new album :)We have at least a half dozen more that will join in,the more the merrier. ;D
Pappy
-
I'll bring one, then, if I can find somewhere to put it in the truck amongst the wimmen and younguns. Dick, Pat just asked that question to make it appear like he usually bathes. ;D
It'll probably be late Friday afternoon before I can escape and get down there.
-
Steve, Bring the Medicine Bow with you. I'm bringing about 10 others with me.
Thanks for the info Pappy. Like I said, I'm not worrying about a bath for myself it the others around me I am concerned about...but if everyone else stinks, then I want to stink too! ;D Pat
-
There's water faucets located outside the concessions, and where we make the bows...so filling up containers will be no problem at all. There's the creek too, that's where Jeremiah Johnson always bathed, and ours isn't near as cold! Oh yeah, and the creek is co-ed! ;D
-
hi folks, sorry about my scarce appearance lately. for some odd reason i seem to get blocked out of this site, but only at work and not all the time. it's weird.
and yesterday i was slightly distracted by my birthday party ;D some friends surprised me by hiring a band to play at the bar we have at work. yep, i know, it's hell to work for the US Government ;D and yep, i heard it from my wife too when i came home at 10 (and as usually i forgot to call and let her know i'll be late)
anyway, i'm going to pick up my tickets tomorrow, so i'll be able to post exact details. a brief research revealed a flight arriving on wednesday at 6:39 PM from philly. its a US Air executed by Canadair, flight number 3795 and there's a returnflight on sunday at 7:05 PM. those two are the most likely i will take, if they're available.
PS: pappy i actually do like sam adams. it's my sure bet when i'm unfamiliar with the other brands served. another one i like is yingling (sp?). i think it's from pennsylvania
-
Pat, yep, I'm planning on bringing it down. I've been shooting it some and keeping it warmed up, I'd like to try and skewer a turkey with it, but haven't had much luck so far.
-
..CO-ED CREEK-yeehaw :P :P :P :P ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D...............bob
-
Dusytbaer Knothead here let us know the flight times as I said I will be taking off from Nashville Wed. evening and can pick you up at airport
-
Guys Knothead here I have a 5th wheel that people can take showers in we may have to carry water but we can do that
-
Boy! we're a tough bunch...griping about showers. I don't hear Marie or Sarah complaining and they will be covered with Jello and chocolate pudding! ;D Pat
-
This is going to be great,I will be off line after Friday,Me and Greg are planing on doing some cooking Wend. and Thursday before the consession stand opens up so we can get our heads together and cook up a bunch of stuff so none of us go hungry. Thanks Knothead for offering the showers,I will help keep the water to you,we want this bunch to look good for the picture Sat.
Who knows it might even make the magazine or if not I will use it in my garden to keep the varmints away ;D.Hope Dustybare can get his plans worked out before I leave so I don't have to worry about that the rest I think is taken care of.See yall soon. :) :)
Pappy
-
Knothead (Ron), I think Marius is planning on arriving Nashville 6:39pm USair flight 3795 from Philly. See his response above. He will probably post and confirm the flight today I'm guessing.
-
I can pick him up if that is the correct time
-
Hey, got thinking about the arrow thing,my arrows often Houdini... is there going to be anyone there with arrows for sale or trade?
-
Auggie,
Grey Wolf Archery Supplies will be there as a vendor. They should have anything you need in the way of arrows, or whatever else. They even have a pretty good inventory of books usually. :)
-
I'm bringing lots of sourwood shoots for some fireside arrow making. You are welcome to join in as is anyone else. Pat
-
Its going to be awful lonely on this site while you guys are all at Pappy's having fun. I think I'm jealous. :'(
Its just not fair danggumit. Actually I will be takin my son to Lansing, MI to leave for the Coast Gaurd boot camp
so could have come down no matter what. I'm still jealous as all hell.
DanaM
-
Me too! Wish I could go. Next year I will definatly have it marked on my callender.
-
sorry guys, still no tickets. i got the ones for my official travel, but that office would not issue my personal tickets. so i got on the web to order them on line and got kicked out AFTER i ordered them, bot BEFORE i got my confirmation. so i'll have to call US Air tomorrow to find out how i can solve the problem. but i'm confident that the arrival time will remain the same, since there were several seats available on that flight.
-
Sounds good Marius, Knothead was planning to pick you up if you can get that flight in I think.
I could have used some of you guys help this evening, no not with reflexing the bows I was working on, but sweetening the homemade yellow plum wine I'm planning on having on hand at the Classic. You see, I had to remove wine from the carboy (5 gal. glass container) in order to have room to add the sugar. I plan on bottling it this weekend. Will make two cases. This wine was made in 2003 and really is at a point where it needs to be consumed. Yall got to help me out with this! ;)
-
Greg, Doesn't seem like it will go to waste with this crowd. ;D Pat
OK Marius, We're counting on ya! Pat
-
I will be out of here at 9:00 today but if yall need me call my cell and I will return you call as soon as I can.615-256-5961. or Joanie at home and she will get a hold of me 931-362-3717. See yall
soon. :)
Pappy
-
arrival flight is confirmed, more details to follow. i had to run home during my lunch break to post this, since our server at work is blocking my access again.
-
Marius as soon as you get a time pm Knothead and he said he would pick you up.See ya soon.
Pappy
-
Marius, would you mind telling me your draw-length? I've got a bow in mind for you to use but its fairly short at 60" ntn. If you have a long draw I'll have to choose a different one for you. ;)
-
Having never been to a shoot I'm wondering what kind of yardages do you shoot at?
DanaM
-
Dana, Usually most of the shots at a 3-D shoot are within 30 yards, usually less with maybe a few long range shots(over 30 yards). They use difficulty rather than distance for these contests. Usually the targets are placed in hunting situations so the target might be only 15 yards but you may have to squat and twist around a tree or bush to be able to make the shot. Sometimes being a lefty or ambidextrous is a big plus on some shots. Pat
-
Hunting situation?? 30 yards?? :o Boy you guys shoot better than me. Justin
-
Thanks Pat, I just so happen to be a lefty shooter that righty ;D Now I need to make abow
I can shoot either way. Probably won't help as I can't hit the broadside of a barn when I'm inside
the barn :(
DanaM
-
...within 30 yds! ;) Pat
-
Oh I see Pat, that is completely different. I can do 29 yards. Justin
-
With our bows 1 yard can make a big differance! ;) Pat
-
Pat, you're pretty accurate at describing our coarse distances. Thirty yard shot might be a charging grisley bear, of course the selfbow stake would probably be around 25 yards...so your only slim chance of surviving this encounter would be to kill that sucker! ;D
Hunting situation example would be...lay down on your back to shoot between the ground and a log at a gobbler sticking his head out from behind a tree for instance...simple! ;)
I'm sorry...what can I say, it's Friday and I just can't seem to be serious. More fun to as Justin said..."convince a bull to buy back his own BS and make him think he got a good deal!". That was a good one! ;D
-
So what yer saying is folks need to bring lots of arra's eh ;)
DanaM
-
Greg, Your example sounds fun. I hope you have one of those shots...only 1 ;D
When I go to 3-D shoots I always buy a score card to support the sponcers but I very rarely keep score. What I'm doing is practicing for hunting. The scoring on most 3-D targets don't always equate to a kill just because you hit the 12 ring. I shoot for a kill, not a score. So, I like shots that would be simular to hunting conditions and like in hunting situations, some shots are a piece of cake and others require heavy concentration to be able to make an effective kill shot.
Now after saying that, I hope I can open my eyes and can controll my aching head in Friday morning when I start shooting! ;D Pat
-
Pat, I havn't seen the course yet this year, but I'm sure you'll like it. :)
-
I'm already likin' everything about the Classic and I ain't been there yet!!! ;D I'm sure the course will be fun and sporting. ;) If I have a bad time, it's my own fault...but that will never happen! ;D Pat
-
Who cares right Pat. I'm comming for the company. Well that and Pappy promissed to teach me how to rough out a stave with a band saw. Justin
-
Yeah the archery thing is what we tell our wives. ;D Pat
-
greg, i just found out i draw 25-26" (i always thought it was 27", must be a man thing ;D )
knothead, it is the flight i posted before: flight number 3795, arriving on 2 may 07 at 6:39 PM from philly. us air executed by canadair. i depart on 6 may at 1:46 PM. if somebody could drop me off, i would very much appreciate it.
let me use this opportunity and say it one more time: the selfless way you help others and give a foreigner a sense of belonging makes y'all the finest group of people out there. i feel privileged to know you (even if it's only in a virtual world, but we're fixin' to rectify that ;D). by the way, was that the right usage of "fixin' to"?
on the tournament: i haven't seen the discussions for last place yet, so let me start them. as a guest from overseas, having gone thru all the trials and tribulations to make it to this event, i expect a certain preferential treatment. i reckon southern courtesy would dictate to reserve the last place for me. ;D
-
Marius, you keep using the term "fixin' to" just like you did and you will fit in with the good ol' boys. As for last place, you might have to fight me for it. ;D You may be a foreigner, but you are flying in. I am driving 1800 miles, (26 hours) so I think I will have earned it before I even pick up a bow. ;) Justin
-
Gosh, He ain't even got here yet and already Marius is lookin' for sympathy and makin' excuses. ::) Sounds like a hustler to me! ;) ...and he's trying to butter us up with the compliments. Wonder what he's "fixin' to" do? ??? Pat
-
man you guys are tough on a lonely soul, far away from home. ;D pat, i'll tell ya what i'm fixin' to do: i'm fixin to have loads of fun, meet a bunch a great folks in person, drink a lot of beer, make a bow and some arras, try every weird recipe you guys can come up with....and then get my behind whooped in the tournament ;D
justin, i'll happily pick up that gauntlet ;D
-
See as how I'm not going I expect tons of pictures, so make sure to to pack yer cameras guys.
DanaM
-
Everybody better hide your gauntlets too. He's already going after Justin's. ;D
Marius we all can show the rest of the world how to achieve good international relationships. ;) They should take note! Pat
-
pat, i think if we could get our political leaders to get together once in a while, drink some beer around a campfire, while they're making (one-fletched) arrows, decide political issues while sweating in the ultimate bow challenge, and then munch on an animal they jointly hunted this would be a better world. ;D
-
As long as Cheney don't show everyone would be safe ;D
-
:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D...bob
-
Marius, I like your philosophy.... I think you are just an old southern boy at heart ;)
Beer, fire, bows...that is the cure to many problems, my friend!
-
chad, we'll drink to that in tennessee, yeeehaaaw ;D
dana, you're killing me ;D
-
Hello fellar's, been restin' up after a long day of preparation for the Classic, and I'm "fixin' to" go to bed here in a few minutes. Didn't sleep well last night, to excited about next weeks events! ;D
We got a lot done today, tents raised for vendor's to use, straightened and reflexed the last of the bow blanks, sharpened scrappers, finished setting the course, mowing, bushhogging, weed-eating... we even found time to split and seal a hornbeam log I cut this week. Everything is really coming together, I hope you all will enjoy yourselfs. We really appreciate all of you taking the time to come and visit us and share in this tradition we all enjoy. ;)
For those of you coming Wednesday and Thursday...we're planning some good cookin'! Some of the highlights will be: chicken & dumplings, turnip-greens, brown-beans, cornbread, stuffed porkchops, banana foster served over french toast, apple and peach cobblers! I can't remember what else, but you can be sure it's good.
Marius, glad you got your flight finalized. Ron will pick you up at the airport, and I hope you have a safe trip over. I have a bottle of blueberry schnapps I bought in Austria over a year ago on a business trip, havn't opened it...you interested? Of course I'm going to have some of my homemade yellow plum wine on hand, and maybe a couple of other types. I know which bow I'm bringing for you to practice with before you finish yours. No excuses with this bow, I've trained it already through a season of hunting during 2005 where it accounted for two deer. ;D
Yall all drive carefully on your way! ;)
-
thanks greg, i appreciate it. i hope i won't ruin the training you invested in that bow. ;D
well, it's 4:30 AM here in germany and i just got back from a gig my band played. my taxi will be here in 3 hours and i haven't packed yet, so i guess, no sleep tonight.
i'll try to touch base once i get to the office in edgewood, MD.
y'all can't imagine how much this means to me and how grateful i am to all those fine people out there who made this happen for me.
-
Dustybaer, The offer of the air cot and sleeping bag/pillow etc. is still good. Problem is PatB and I will not be there until Thursday mid morning or so. Depending on weather Pat sleeps in the camper or his tent you have the option of the camper or tent. I am sure there will be room and a host of people able to accommodate you. I have to go and drive some full size tanks today at the museum for a public demo, you know, crush a few cars etc. ;D See you soon.

-
Greg, What is the tick situation in your neck of the woods :o. Should I bring my Permanone spray? ???
Pat
-
Might want to bring two cans ;)
-
Yeah Pat and everyone else, might bring some tick spray if you can. There is a Walmart 15 minutes away that sales Permanone if you don't have any. I havn't got a tick on me yet this year, but some of the guys were setting targets yesterday and got into a few. :)
-
I guess that is another good thing about the desert. We don't see many ticks. If you shoot a deer, you will see a few on it. Other than that I haven't ween a tick in 10 years. Justin
-
Justin, did you get my reply to your camping question? Also, a fellow Utah guy new to archery posted about making a bow. If you don't mind, could you carry a stave or maybe a roughed in bow back for him if I have time to get it that far along? I told him he would have to take you up on your offer for him to come to your place and get him started. If you can, could you also remind me so I don't forget...gettin' old an forgetful! :)
When are yall planning to arrive?
-
I tried to get him to come to Tennessee with me. He said he couldn't make it. I am planning to be to Brian's house at around 10:00 PM on Wednesday. I talked to him about getting up early Thursday and heading down so we could be there in the early AM. Justin
-
If the weather is good I may be riding my motorcycle down from Ohio just to visit you folks. Is the driveway motorcycle friendly?
-
hi y'all,
made it safely to edgewood. will see you on wednesday. greg, i might need a cot and a bag for wednesday night, until dick and pat arrive. thanks in advance. can't wait to meet you guys.
-
Welcome to the US, Marius. We will see you mid day Thursday. ;D Pat
-
Mickey, yes your motorcycle won't have any trouble with our drive...it's gravel.
Marius, will do...I think Knothead (Ron, the guy picking u up from the airport) has room in his camper. If not, we can squeeze you into the cabin with us. ;) I'll bring a cot and bag for you just in case.;D I think Knothead wanted to pm you and see if you had a cell phone. His work is within 10 minutes of the airport, he might have you call him when you arrive, or else he will be there at the planned arrival.
If any of you guys have any questions, please post them within the next couple of days. Pappy is already at the club, and unable to get on line. I'm taking off Wed. through the end of the week and will be out of pocket also. Knothead might be able to check for messages until Wednesday afternoon. We have had a laptop down at the club, but reception isn't the best. We got to figure out how to vote for BOM for April! ;D
-
Greg, Do ya'll have a spine tester and fletching jig at the club? If not I will bring mine. I'm trying to get all my chickens in a row so I don't forget anything. I already have your birch bark loaded. ;) Pat
-
Pat, I think we have a spine tester, but I havn't used it so you might bring yours. We have the multi-fletcher, and I'm sure there are probably a couple of bitzenbergers around as well. So yes, bring your spine tester...can leave the fletcher at home.
I'm having some timber cut on my place today, so I might have bark aplenty...just not the right type. I have a bow in mine for the birch bark you're bringing. Thanks!
-
Dustybaer I have room in the camper for you Wed. night and when you get a chance call me on the cell no. I sent you and we will make final pick up plans
Pat if you don't want to bring tester and jig I know where we can get one
Ron
-
I just got finished bottling two cases of yellow plum wine...I really need to free up the space it's takin' up in my basement. Got another case of assorted types for a third case. Might have to ask for some help disposing of it. I really hate to have to ask a favor of a bunch of guys I havn't even met yet, but do ya think??? ;D
-
If it's that big of a hardship on you to find storage space for it, I reckon we can do the neighborly thing and help you out ;D
-
...if I gotta. ;D Pat
-
Ron, That would be great. A spine tester isn't really critical but nice to have...and difficult
to transport. ;D...and I'm already bringing a bunch of stuff...and will it all fit in Dick's truck!!! ;) Pat
-
Hope you guys all have a great time at the Classic ;D Partake of Pappy and Gregs hospitality. Eat, drink and make merry.
I'm depressed I can't be there to share the good times, Instead I have to go to 2 day seminar on waterworks and get
my continuing education, would so much rather be doing the selfbow challenge and learning from you guys. Oh well make the best of the
hand yer dealt eh. Someone buy Dustybaer a beer for me. Remember lots of pics.
Shoot Straight!!!
Dana
ps. did I mention to take lots of pictures ;D
-
Thanks for the offer to help me out guys, I really do appreciate it! ;D
Sorry you can't make it Dana...maybe next year. It's ashame we have to maintain that chain around our necks called work that gets in the way of the important stuff, just for the sake of paying bills and putting food on the table! ;) You reminded me to carry my camera. :)
-
Hey PatB, its a 4 door truck with a cap on the back. Yea we got room. The back seat is for our personal stuff and what ever. The back will have your horse (shaving) our bows, arrows, ice chest and what ever. We got room. I even have my spine tester and fletching jig in there.
Dick
-
Hey, any body know the weather forecast for Thurs- on?
-
Chance of showers. :( but all of the sunny personalities will overcome that ;D Pat
Dick. I really don't have all that much. Mostly bulky stuff.
As you said in the other thread, at $300 per gal, we may all go broke just trying to have a little fun. Pat
-
Anything even remotely related to fun is expensive these days. But I guess thats why memories of good times are priceless. And Im sue Ill have a ton this weekend rain or shine! Auggie
-
Thought this might be helpful to some of you folks traveling.

-
Ralph, I was getting ready to mail you a couple points. If you're coming to the classic, I'll just bring 'em down to you.
-
I think kids 12 and under are free, but I'm not sure of the age being 12, so don't hold me to it. :)
There will be a lot of kids shooting and playing, so feel free to bring all you can haul. ;D
-
thanks hillbilly
So you got a few points out of that old cracked rock anyway,Cool.
I got a few more but I don't have any idea if they any good or not.
Ralph
-
OH my heck. I was going to get ready to leave today. Well my work computer crashed. Motherboard and CD drive are both shot. I have everything backed up, but I didn't get anything done today. I better get to bed. I'm leaving on my marathon drive in 5 hours. ;D
Brian, I will call you tomarrow. Justin

Everyone have a safe journey! ;) Dick will pick me up in Asheville Thursday about 8am. We should be there by 1 or so. ;D ;D ;D ;D Pat
-
Pat, I'll be there between 7 and 8. I'm always early. See you in the morning.
Dick
-
Durnit, ya'll have fun tomorrow. I'll see you late Friday afternoon.
-
Pappy posted his cell on the life is good thread (I think) if you all have any problems. You all drive safe. Send me a p.m. if you need anything/questions and can get the internet on the road. Sarah and Monroe arrive here tomorrow from the p.a. office. I have boxes and boxes on my porch Sarah shipped from the office shipped here for you all. They are getting there on Thursday. I am bringing my daughter on Friday. She is so excited she can hardly stand it. Pray for good weather, we already know we will have good hospitality!
-
Dick, I'll get there early also. ;) I'm trying to get all loose ends buttoned up today. Pat
-
I'll see ya'll thursday afternoon! :) We are leaving this afternoon and driving half way, staying at a hotel and driving again in the morning! Save me a spot to camp! ;D
-
Slight change of plans for me.
I found out that Friday is going to be a goof-off day at school for my son.
He will be finished with all of his test by noon on Thursday.
The plan is to check him out at noon and head North.
We should have no trouble arriving by 5pm Thursday afternoon.
Save me a camping spot next to Ryano. I plan to study those recurves of his. ;D

Leaving out early in the morning. Should be there sometime before noon. ;D
-
ttt
-
I'm heading out! I'll be back Sunday PM and should have plenty of pics. ;) Pat
-
well I'm betting that since they predicted thunderstorms here (they still are) and thunderstorms in Tenn causing me to cancel the bike trip down to the Tenn Classic that the sun is shining down there , as it is here. I HATE WEATHERMEN (when they are wrong)
Hope you all are having a grand time. Maybe next year for me.
-
All I have to say is DOG tired! Total blast! Pics coming soon hope you all enjoy them. The rain was horrendous last night for just a bit and even this morning..but today was beautiful! Lots of people all very nice. I am back home and going to climb in my own bed tonight. My daughter sure enjoyed herself. She is on top of the world getting to shoot a bow she made herself...with a lot of help from very nice people! :)
-
We just got back in tonight. This was Becky and myselfs first time there and sure had a good time. You folks sure have a heck of a place there. We will be back next year. :)
-
Thanks every body we had a great time,it was Duncan's first shoot.

It was a good time Bob. I felt like I was visitin' an uncle's place kinda . Felt very welcome and had a great time. You oughtta come up next year. I suggest comin' on Thursday though, only one full day isn't near enough.
Chris
-
Bob ,we had a blast. And Duncan did great. Real nice folks up there.
Ralph
-
Great time! Thanks everyone for comin'...very tired, but in a good kind of way! ;)
Oh yeah, I'll sleep good tonight! ;D
-
Thanks to everyone on PA who came out to TN. It was a pleasure meeting all of you. I am still trying to process all the tips I picked up this weekend!
I hope everyone has a safe trip back. Pappy is right....Life is Good in Tennessee.

The real test is going to see who can name whom off the pics! Any one brave enough? Tip #1. PatB looks a bit like Rip Van Winkle ;)....Who can take a stab...double points if you know their given name as well as the P.A. name.
We sure had fun! ;D
-
Here is my stab at posting some pics. Tom Sawyer had to resize them for me because I seem to be a bit inept! ::) Thanks Lennie

One more we can't forget Rip Van Winkle...I mean PatB All of these wonderful Bowyers have won B.O.M. at least once. What a motley looking crew!
-
Me, Hillbilly, Dick Bernier, RyanO, Pappy and Greg. Not a motley crew in the bunch! ;D
Looks like the Princess, in the first pic, gatta go! ;D She never did take out her tierra. :( Pat
ps. Mickey, you would have been miserable on your bike. Maybe next time!
-
Handsome bunch of fellers if you ask me ;D
-
I had a ball. ;DlBy the way, I'm the shorter of the two bald headed fellers in the back on the right in one of the first coupla pics, kinda behind Pappy. The taller baldy is Justin Shnyder,
I've been to mojam a few times and this get together is way better IMO. The weather is better for camping, the location is prettier, and the folks are nicer too. I gotta get there earlier next year so I can camp in the valley not up top. Its no fun to have to walk 200 yards to use the porta john . They'll need one up on top next year Pappy!
Missed hanging out with a buncha folks too most of the first day. Did take a stave from rough split to near bow dims though. A buddy I took with me got a truly snakey bow chased to a ring and layed out while we were there. Its gonna make an impressive site if he can pull it off.Worked from 8am to 8 pm on the same osage stick. Got the hik backed cherry out and fiddled with that some saturday night late. It was awful late though and you know the saying" friends don't let friend tiller drunk". So I put it up. Discretion being the better part of valor and all. Besides I can mess 'em up just fine completely sober .
Great time and great company for the most part.Pappy said somethin about not knowing what to do if it got too much bigger , well its prolly gonna get bigger! The really good ones seem to anyway.
Chris
-
I just wanted to say thank you to Pappy, Joanie, Mike S, Greg, and all the rest of you for making us feel so welcomed!!
We had so much fun and learned a lot...
It was great to meet all of you... ;D
-
hi, y'all. made it back to edgewood in one piece. got to my hotel around 10:00 last night. i felt kinda sorry for the people sitting next to me on the planes, (five days without a shower, you know ;D ). i'll just say a brief thank you to everybody who made this possible for me. i had the time of my life. there will be more, once i write the article for PA magazine. and i won't even start thanking you for all the wonderful presents i got. that'll be in the article as well. the only thing i regret is having been deprived of the opportunity to try some PBR ;D
-
On the PBR, you didn't miss a thing! ;D
-
Thanks to Pappy, Mike, Greg, Justin and all who treated the PA team so very well. You all are fabulous!
Thanks to to all who read Primitive Archer and support it in so may ways. Your words of encouragement and acts of kindness while we were there were really appreciated.
My granddaughter, Susannah, had a great time and I got to walk the course with her while she shot the bow she made. Big time memory!
Thanks again.
monroe
-
Marius. I promise you PBR next time! ;) It was really great to finally meet you. You will have to come back next year...but don't expect more bootie! ;D Have a safe trip back across the pond.
Minuteman, Is drunk backseat tillering OK? ;D Pat
-
PatB, after what he stuffed into his suitcase, I would like to be the fly on the wall when customs opens that bag ??? Marius, good meeting you. You have a place to stay, tent or camper, anytime. ;D It was so nice to "put the face" with so many of you. Pappy, your hospitality rivels the Ritz. Thanks. Hey BTW the course was nice. Will shoot it twice next year.
Dick
-
Thanks Pat, feel a little better now althoguh I must admit I was cussing the weatherman all day Saturday as the sun was shining and it was 70+ degrees. I was looking forward to the trip down and meeting a bunch of you fine folk.
-
I just got in and thought i would drop you guys a note to tell you all I made it. I'm to tired to read everything so I will check in later. Imagine me tired? 19 1/2 hours of sleep since last Tuesday. Justin
-
You said you don't get tired... ;D I bet people looked at you funny with all those trees in the back of your truck!
-
I don't think it matters Pat if the tillering advice is coming from an impaired back seat sitter or not when the driver can't find his butt with both hands! :o
It was a long day Saturday and its been a long time since I've seen 2 AM! I appreciate the help though. I just wasn't up to it at the time.
Glad to hear ya made it home Justin.
He had lossed so much sleep when we got there that he told me the same story twice ??? It got better the second time he told it too. Somethin about an alarm going off at 4 AM and 1000's of pounds of obsidian , someone with a slipped disc and him havin to heave all that wood into his truck by himself... Only peed three times on the way out.. I dunno... I'm thinkin' them folks from Utah just ain't right.! ;D Whattya call a feller from Utah anyway, a Utahan? Utahian?
He sure did get his money's worth in wood and thats no lie.
Chris
-
They look at him funny anyway!...Thanks for the ride Justin
Tenn.(aka Tenn.)
-
Hows the ol'noggin there Chris? ;)....Brian
-
I got all these lumps on my head and can't seem to remember any thing since Friday evening, Brian. ;D Hmmmmm How many times did I hit that thing anyway? You'd think I'da just moved down to the other end wouldn't ya?
That string stretch out yet? Can't remember if ya said you learned how to make a string yet or not . Next year I'll show ya how, it ain't hard.
Chris
-
I had to travel 750 miles miles to meet a couple of fellows who work with my cousin about 70 miles away from where I live. Small world, go figure.
Justin I only heard you hit your head one time, sounded like a gong. Made me glad to be short.
One more glass of beer and Monroe would've made ME the new editor of PA. Ya'll are real lucky he knows his limits, I edit with a machete.
-
The round trip wound up to be 3825.6 miles for me. ;D I left Pappy's Sunday at 12:00 and got home at 5:30 today. With the exception of a little nap from 2:00 to 5:00 AM I drove that entire time. I thought I was going to get killed by a tornado in Kansas, (flooding, wind and hail everywhere) and it was snowing and 26* in Colorado. It was well worth it though. The hospitality was incredible. Greg taught me a few things too. He must be one heck of a teacher if I learned something.
Minuteman, You got a bladder controll problem already? ;D You are kind of young for that don't you think. Justin
-
I think you mean 3,825? unless you took one hell of a detour......lol. sleep deprivation will do that to ya....Glad to hear you made it back safely Justin.... :)
-
Justin, How many times did you circumnavigate the globe? ::) That tornado in Kansas was a biggy! Glad you missed it. Did you get a pic of your truck loaded? :o
-
Justin, you didn't think we'd let that mileage error go without a little ribbing did you? I know you don't miss to many opportunities when they present themselves. ;D You know what I'm talkin' about. ;)
-
When Dick did a final clean up of his truck and camper trailer at home he found my camera and bow stringer. ;D Wonder how it could have gotten misplaced. ::)
He's mailing it to me so I'll post pics when it comes in. ;D Pat
-
Did he find Monroe's cooler? :)
-
Greg, are you insinuating that I deserved that? Well maybe a little. I actually realized I did it, but I had already turned the computer off and was to tired to care. I fixed it now. 3825.6 Decimal not comma... :-[
The first picture is Ron helping me to get the wood the hard way.
Then the way it left Marie's house.
Then a couple after I got home. Justin

-
Heres the Utah feller's truck and a few other pics. I was like Hillbilly in that I forgot I had the dern camera with me until about ten minutes before I was leaving.
No Justin, I don't have a bladder problem just thought it was wierd fer a guy to talk about how often he had to pee is all. Course tornadoes tend to make a feller feel like he has to pee more than he really does so I assume you stopped a bit more often on the way back. You can tell us the story again a little later if ya want. ;)
But hey I'm not one to get in a peein' contest ;D with somebody so I'll just move on. I hope ya'll enjoy the pics.
-
You got all confused Chris, I was just pointing out I only stopped for gas, no extra stops. When it started to hail, I wasn't stopping for anything. I heard them say you cant outrun a tornado. But you don't have to sit and wait for it either. Justin
-
The last one with Pat and Dustybaer smiling... those are two of the most honest smiles I'd seen in quite a while. :)Them kinda smiles are the main reason I'll be headin' back next year.
Hey, Justin when ya gonna send me my hickory?
Oohhhh boy!
Chris
-
Hey , I saw a lot of genuine smiles while I was there, glad somebody caught them on film.Glad Justin made it home, have to thank him again for the ride and for gettin Slow talkin Jones stuck in my head.Justin dont sing too bad, butglad for satalite radio too. Cant say enough good about Pappy and the Twin oaks gang! Ive got one piece of osage Im gonna sacrafice to the weather spirits before I come next year, maybe it will bring sun and no rain. Anyway glad I got to meet everyone, put faces with names, and found out what a great bunch you are! Auggie.
-
Chris, You are as anxious as me. Maybe tomorrow. Ill let you know.
Here are a couple of more pictures now that I have the truck unloaded. Justin
[attachment deleted by admin]
-
Hey Lennie, not editor, brewmaster! You do brew a very good beer. Think about it. We would have the only magazine with it's own brewmaster. I'll bet it wouldn't be long before you'd have a contest going with "Brew of the Month" hats and all. Course you would have to send samples to everyone before the vote.
Justin, those are great pics of the logs. Glad you didn't have a flat tire on the way home. Sorta hard to unload and reload I would think. Again thanks for all the help. It was a very good gathering. By the way the next issue of PA is now being mailed and its major theme is Flight Shooting out your way in the Bonneviile Salt Flats out by you. The cover has a photo of Dr. Charles Grayson participating at age 94.

So who is going to host the "self brew challenge" Can GregB enter his wine?
-
Hows your head this morning Marie? ::) Pat
-
Just fine, Pat so KIND of you to ask! :P
-
PA Brewmaster. Now there's a job I could really dive into.
Lets consult Pappy on the possibility of a selfbrew challenge for next year. And selfwine would certainly be allowed.
-
Lennie,
Self Brew Challenge sounds like a good plan to me. Hey, I really would like you to write an article about "Self Brewing" for the magazine...a key primitive skill if there ever was one. I think it would be a popular subject. No kidding.
monroe
-
Oddly enough, I just put pen to paper and came up with a short article on that very topic. I'll send it your way.
-
After that runs I'll write something on self-soap. I make a heck of an oatmeal/milk/honey lye soap, my kids practically cuss on purpose just to get a taste.
-
Sounds like the making of several articles. Don't forget to add some pictures or diagrams.
monroe
-
Marius, with all the different brews around during the "Classic", did you ever get to try and PBR? ;D
-
Alright Greg. Don't be stirring up no hornets nest! >:( Pat
-
I'm gonna try this again. We just had a thunder storm as I sent out the pics and they didn't go anywhere. These are some pics I took(remember, I lost my camera). I'll post more later. I also have a disc of pics from Dick so I'll post them too. Pat

I wanna know about the self bow challege who won, pictures etc. Justin was the stave Greg saved for ya as
good as promised? come on guys yer killin me. Marius too bad ya didn't get yer PBR not that ya missed much
Strohs is much better ;)
DanaM
-
EEEEEERRRRRRR--------error!!!!!..............--PBR is better than Strohs !.........bob
-
Dana, Greg and Pappy are such gracious hosts that they would have given you the best stave they had. In fact I think they did. Just don't mess with Greg's copperhead bow.
Bob, when you have drank as many beers as some of these guys did, I don't think you taste anything anymore. ;D Justin
-
Injuns cant drink dont yer know that, burp ! ;D..bob
-
I actually drink Miller Lite when I drink Less Filling...
Justin I'm sure that Pappy and Greg are great hosts with luck I will be there next year.
Dana
-
Dana, I have to say we put Justin to work for a while helping out with tillering bows for some folks. So he actually earned that stave if the truth were known. We really appreciate his and several other of the PA members for their help giving direction to some newbies. :)
-
DanaM you make it and I will have the Lite and a good stave,Might even take you to our stash
and let you pick.We tried to send everyone away with something even if it was just memories.
Pappy
Pappy
-
Dana, Bring your smelling salts if you go see their stash :o When I blinked and thought I had gone to bowyer heaven. ;D...or in Greg's case BBQ heaven! ;) Pat
-
Dang guys ya got me salivating ;D How am I to get anywork done now ::)(i'm at work)
Going shooting tonight and most likely have a few Lite's when done.
Dana
ps a stave would be great but its only a bonus just meeting you folks would a reward in itself!
Dana
-
Dana,
Meeting them was the highlight of the trip...You cant find more gracious, kind hearted people then these guys....I promise you all if you can make it out next year..You will not be disappointed!!!!!! the scenery is almost as beautiful as the bows they make.
-
...and the scenery was even better with Sarah, Marie and Susannah there! ;) Pat
-
;D ::) ;D ;)
Dana
-
well, the day has finally arrived and i have to leave this hospitable country, but i'll be back ;D (if nothing else, to at least try PBR)
dana, if you make it next year, i promise to try stroh's as well ;D
pat, you sure took a lot of pictures of me ;D
next week i'll be heading to neubrunn where i will tell everybody how y'all treat germans at your shoots ;D
i can't even start thanking you for your hospitality and generosity, but most importantly for your friendship.
talk at you later.
dustybaer, the traveller between worlds ;D
-
Dustybare it was our pleasure, hope you can make it back next year and also have a good trip home.
You can pass the words that Americans aren't all that bad of people. Most are just like us. :) :)Well
you don't have to tell them that ;D ;D
Pappy
-
Have a safe trip home Dusty
Dana
-
This is Hillbilly's wife Tina. I had a wonderful time meeting all yall. Joanie(Pappy's wife) great to meet you, look forward to seeing you next year.
Nice to meet others from different locatations, like Marius from Germany, Justin from Utah, and if I named everyone I could be here all night...It was a great shoot, and a very good time to meet and gather with people with the same interests. I really had a blast shooting with Pat, Dick, Jonathan, Colleen, Marius, Cody and my hillbilly hubby. Looking for arrows in the leaves is a wonderful treat...Where is the lost and found arrow bucket? Cody would like to know Thanks everyone for a great time, we will be back next year!
PS- Loved the gravy and sausage biscuits.
-
Marius, I have others too! ;D Pat
-
Marius, I second Pappy's comment...it trully was a pleasure to meet you and to now have a new friendship that bridges the Atlantic! :)
This world is definitely getting a lot smaller when we can all come together from different parts of the US and other countries as happened last weekend. Good that we can stay in touch here on PA. ;)
-
Amazing what can happen when you chase a few growth rings, huh....
It was great to meet all of you. If we get a few more folks together for next year, we may just have a movement on our hands!
Tennessee is a good place for it. We still haven't made peace with the "No Moonshine" thing... ;)
-
chad that sounds like a song waiting to be born ;D "There Ain't No Moonshine At Pappy's"
or somethin like dat. perhaps the ladies could be back up singers ;D
Ok I'm off to shoot and......
DanaM
-
Marius, it was a pleasure having you share my camp with Pat and I. Have a safe trip home and good luck with your new toys. Hope you can come again next year.

wow it looks like you had a blast. wish it wasnt during my busy season so i could of been there. its funny lookin at the pics aside from pappy and pat i couldnt name a single person cause im always lookin at the bows . lol
-
just hit the ground in good ole germany and guess what, it's raining.
pat, don't you dare ;D
pappy and greg, you guys have re-defined hospitality. please extend my greetings to jeff (i think that was his name) as well.
dick and ron, thanks for letting me sleep in your trailers. it feels good to be trailer trash with that kind of company ;D
-
Dustybaer,
when you pass the word along to your wonderful German buddies and they log on etc...make sure they introduce themselves to the crew over here that met you.
Glad your back safe and sound. We had another gulley washer last night (FRI) made me think of everyone making their bows last Fri rain or shine. today was nice....just like last Sat. Susannah has been using her new "knowlege" of string making to make necklaces for her friends. :)
-
Glad to hear you made it back safely, Marius.
-
Pappy, I've figured out how to send Pic's but the size are over the 200 KB. maybe someone could tell me how to reduce the size. Thanks The Hawk
-
Hawk, It depends on what photo image software you have on your computer. Most of them you can just go to edit and scroll down to image size. Change it to around 600X400 and it will work. Justin
-
I went and had a great time there. Mike helped me a LOT and everyone was SO nice. I've been staining my bow and I'm almost done :) .
I'm planning to come back next year and I can't wait :D. It was soooo much fun.
minicalendergirl
-
Hawk don't feel bad. I had to get Tom Sawyer to resize my pics for me. I kept trying and trying. Following everyone's instructions etc... ::)I still have a few more to post but i need to send them to him and get him to help me with it.
-
Hawk--------you need to set the camera pixels at 640 x 480. This is the small size for most cameras. Then do as Justin said. If you dont have that option and you have" paint" you can go into it and go to attributes and change the size to 640 x 480. Pics cant go over 200 kb or forum will tell you file is too large. Clear as mud, huh !...............bob
-
Thanks, With your help and advice I will go to a program that will allow me to downsize to 640 X 480 I've got a lot of nice pic's of the Tennessee Classic, so thanks again and I'll start working on that.. The Hawk
-
Everybody, By Jove I Think I've Got It ? I'll try one picture first. The Hawk
[attachment deleted by admin]
-
Everybody, OK so what did I do wrong?? It's twice the size that it should be !! you'll probabley make me stop posting. The Hawk.
-
Hawk-If camera pixels were set larger than 640 x 480 then pics will come out larger. Pic you posted was 73 kb so its under 200 kb, thats why it posted. Make sure you have camera at 640 x 480 on future shots. Nice pic of Pappy...................bob
-
Hawk that is EXACTLY what happened to my pics...I would get a corner of my picture...I thought i had it and the bam! 3/4 of my pic is gone. That is why Lennie had to do it for me... maybe he can explain it to you. He goes by Tom Sawyer..
-
I don't know about the nice pic. of Pappy.Minicalendagirl you done a fine job and have some real tallant, just like you mom said you did. When you get it finished be sure and post some pictures
of it along with some full draw so it can go in for BOM everyone would enjoy seeing it.Keep up the good work.Mike said you were a pleasure to work with and a very fast learner.
Pappy
-
Calendargirl, I'm using a different program to edit the pic's. if this doesn't work I'll try to contact Tom Sawer and thanks for the info. this pic will be the same one that got cut off before. The Hawk
[attachment deleted by admin]
-
Now that is a much better Picture,I like that alot ;D :D ;)
Pappy
-
Pappy, with some help I think I can post a few Pic's The Hawk
[attachment deleted by admin]
-
Dang you got a picture of old Tri pod there ;D.Nice pictures thanks for sharing.
Pappy
-
Hello Hawk,
Very nice pictures...thanks for posting them! Looking forward to visiting with you and your wife again next year. :)
-
greg, you look kinda bored on the last picture ;D but you sure have a nice bow in your hands.
-
I think Greg was just worn out! :P I never seen anyone work so hard to please everyone...... ;)
-
Thanks Marius and Ryan...I think we were probably all tired by that time. I think they took that picture Sunday. ;)
-
CalendarGirl, I'm kinda out of town and out of state, and not anywhere near my laptop that I used to post the pic's, and can't remember what program that I used to downsize the Pic's. But I will get back with ya. The Hawk
-
Pappy & Greg, I need the practice, so I sent a couple more pic's.

I watched that little white dog walk up to a truck tire, sniff it, hoist his right rear leg and pee on the tire!
Couldn't believe he could stand there using two legs on the same side of his body! Guess it is the size of the fight in the dog after all.
-
We was wondering how he would do that,we figured he would hike his leg and fall on his face. ;D
adapt and overcome. ;D
Pappy
-
Pappy...to quote from "The Outlaw Josey Wells"..."endeavor to persevere"!
Hawk, that first picture Steve looks like the cat that swallowed the canary...what's up with that?
-
Greg he is eating, imagine that. ;D
Pappy
-
I would say from the glazed over stare, he got into your stash Greg. Justin
-
Ok! I have it pencilled in on the callender. I will be at the Classic next year for the 11th Anuall Tennessee Classic. Hmmm! My favorite style of bow is English Warbow. Can I build one of these at the Classic next year? Say arround 100#'s draw weight? ;D
-
You can build whatever you want, its your wood. The question is, can you draw it to shoot in the competition. ;D Justin
-
Good point justin,he says he can,we will see. ;D
Pappy
-
Maybe! ;D
-
justin, thanks for shipping the bows. they have arrived safely. the string on the "two deer" bow is missing (which is no problem, i'll just make a new one, even if it's not as "fine" as pat's), but what i really wanted to thank you for are those "fine" bow-socks that protected my "fine" bows so well. thanks for all the trials and tribulations you went thru (especially the sewer pipe ;D). i really appreciate it.
-
;) You like my sewing? :o Glad they got there Marius. Did you check the bottom of the bow sock for the string? I'm sure they were all there when I started packing. I did find an extra string the other day, but I thought Brian had left it in the truck. I told him I had an extra. He didn't say it was or wasn't his. Maybe he was still distracted by the Pappy burger. Was the string yellow and brown, with a grey serving and string nocking point? Justin
-
yep, i turned the socks inside out. maybe customs lost it. i think it had a metal nockpoint, but i'm not sure. greg, do you recall? anyway, why don't you just keep it and make a bow for it ;D
-
Dont think im missing a string Justin, it must be Marius's.....still not sure what I did and didnt make it home with ;).....Brian
-
well, "two deer" is 58" ntn, so if the string is 55"-56" it might be the one. ;D
-
I'm pretty sure it was yellow and brown, don't remember the nocking point...but usually use waxed dental floss.
Maybe a "fine" string is in order...wonder who could make one??? ;D
-
i just went ahead and made a new string for "two deer", so justin i suggest you make a new bow for the string ;D i made it black and brown. greg, i hope that's OK with you.
by the way, i shortened the signature bow by 4", re-tillered it and flipped the tips. it should be about 53#@25". i'll narrow the tips some more and then give it a water-based lacquer finish (so i don't mess up the signatures). as soon as it's done, i'll post some pictures.
-
Well Marius, I was going to quit making bows, since I have enough. ;D But if I need to make a bow for this string, I guess I will. But just out of necessity. ;D ;D ;) Justin
-
just don't use yew ;D it's because of the colors of the string, nothing else, really. ;D
-
The string is a little short for a warbow anyway. I'm sure it is the string you are missing. It has a dental floss nocking point. Justin
