Title: Tenn Classic
Post by: jignfrog on May 06, 2007, 11:46:52 pm
I wanted to let everyone involved that the Tenn Classic was great. You all done a great job. And enjoyed meeting everyone down there. The food was great and everyone made me feel right at home. My family had a great time. Especially my girl who brought home a disc from the bird shoot she is happy to have gotten something and wants it hung in her room. I can't wait tilll next year to come down.

Oh and I will be expecting some of you to come up to MOJAM in July. : - )

I agree it was my first event and I had a great time. Everyone made me feel like a friend from the word hello. The food was great. The entertainment was excellent. Thanks to all who gave of their time to make this a great event. A special thanks to Pappy for helping me start my first bow.

From the minute Dick Bernier and I pulled down the drive past Pappy's cabin I knew this is gonna become one of my favorite shoots.  :o :D ;D. Pappy, Greg and all the Twin Oaks folks did a spectacular job. The facilities are perfect, the 3D courses were setup well, the weather was ...well, weather! and the warm friendly Southern hospitality made me feel at home...it was like I've known all these folks for a long while...and I had only just met most of them.  And, my compliments to the chef(s). The evening meals were very good and just what we all needed after the days activities and to prepare the the evenings activities. The egg, ham and cheese casserole and a few cups of coffee got me going each morning. ;).
I was thrilled to see all the bows being built and the hands-on help given. Greg, especially was constantly working with one beginning bowyer or another...from morning to well after dark. This event is a CLASS ACT!!! The thought came to me that this event could rival that "other" bow building event in the July heat of Missouri 8). I can just see it now...The Twin Oaks Tennessee Classic(TOJAM)! ;D
It was wonderful to put faces and shake the hand of folks I've enjoyed here on PA and new folks I met this weekend. Marius traveled the farthest, coming from Germany, and returning there with a bundle of loot :). But Justin was a solid second! He hauled 1000# of beautiful obsidian to the classic from S.W. Utah and 2000# of large :o hack berry, black walnut logs(and other odds and ends) and a couple of Missourians ;) back west. Meeting Munroe, Marie(and Susannah) and the princess ;)(Sarah) was my pleasure. You guys are the best!!!
Wait till ya'll see some pics of all the great folks and beautiful self made bows. This is a fine example of PASSING IT ON!     Pat

ps. If anyone found a dig camera(HP 400 series) in a small, black zippered case with 2 lithium batteries stuck under the belt loop of the case, please contact me.  :'(

Thanks Pat! Probably will take a couple of days to recover, but it was a good type of tired. ;)

I really enjoyed meeting everyone that showed up from PA, that was the highlight of the event for me. I also enjoyed meeting Sarah, Monroe, Maries daughter Susannah, and getting to visit with Marie again. Thanks again for the corkscrew Marie! ;)

I don't know about calling the event TOJAM though...the mental image of that just doesn't quite work for me! ;D

What Pat said........he expressed it perfectly and saved me a lot of typing :) We had a GREAT time (although in retrospect I probably should have slept sometime during the weekend), and met some of the finest folks that I've ever had the pleasure of encountering. I'll try to post some pics when I get home from work this afternoon-just made it home last night in time to wash off the mud, pick off the ticks, and fall into bed. Didn't take as many pics as I should have, so much interesting stuff going on that I forget to pull the camera out sometimes.

Yeah, the TN Classic was a hellova good time. Got to meet all kinds of people from around the country and world(Marius).  It was especially nice to meet the PA Forum folks for the first time. Got some great advice and instructions on bow building, arrows, flintknapping, beer drinking, beer drinking and flinktknapping :D, etc......

The courses were well layed out and great fun to shoot; although it seems like I/we were doin more searchin for arras then hitting the target ;D The facilities were top-notch and everyone who wanted to make a bow was doin it, and like Pat said, with the help of all kinds of people.  The only complaint I have, is that during one of the nightly announcements, some "local" was speakin some ancient european language and I couldn't understand a lick of it :D.....at least he looked like a local with that huge beard and all.
Well, to sum up, it was a great event and look forward to goin next year.
Thanks Pappy et al... :)

I'll add my thanks to the great folks who put on this shindig.  Looked like a lot of work.  The family and I had a great time and I enjoyed meeting you all.  Ate too much, drank too much, talked too much and came home with a nice piece of Alabama hedge as a memento.

The highlight of my weekend was hitting one of the aerial targets using a selfbow.  Granted it was on my last arrow but hey I am slow to warm up and the arrows were carbon.  Might've hit 8/10 with cane.  Yeah, thats the story.

My other memorable event was finding the scoop on that busload of Michiganders with the funky horn.  Anybody hear that horn?  Anybody NOT hear that horn (what are ye deef?!)?  I walked by and they didn't blow it, so I stepped up on the bus and asked if they only blowed it for women or something.  They said they'd honk if I took my shirt off, so I did and they did by golly.  Men of their word.  Manly men.  Then they gave me a beer, and some bacon-wrapped BBQ chicken the next day.  Fine bunch, though I hear there were mascot kidnappers amongst them.

We had good neighbors at the campgrounds too, Jonathon and his hot salsa and the fellow who does re-enactments at Martin's Crossing in VA (gotta check that out someday).

That is a little of my experiences.  Lennie

Lennie, Your beer was excellent. I'm usually not a dark beer drinker but that slight taste of cherry gave it a wonderful flavor. I enjoyed meeting you and your wife.
I heard the horn from that bus also quite a bit was didn't take my shirt off for them...not even for a beer. ::)
I think we all ate too much, drank too much and definitely talked to much but besides laughing too much and shooting what else was there.  ;D Pat

It was good to see you nare-do-wells, some for the first time.  Like it always seems to happen, I met people I wasn't expecting to meet but missed some I'd hoped to.

Hate I missed tasting Lennie's home brew.  You gonna brang a taste to the Jam, ain't ya ole buddy, ole pal?

Got to handle the Southern community bow.  Ya'll did a great job.

Our trip was very enjoyable as usual, even though my priorities are conflicted between entertaining my loverly wife off site and feeding my bowyer/archer obsession by hangin and yackin at Pappy's place.

Pappy and his crew did a great job again.  Having been to the last five, at least, I can tell you this shoot has really grown.  I fear a little bit that one of my favorite Yogi-isms may come to pass ie. "nobody goes there anymore, it's just too crowded."  I think Pappy still has a couple of notches left in his belt, but I can only imagine just how much time and money it costs to host a deal like this.  To our hosts I'd like to extend a most sincere and heart felt thank you.

I hope to see ya'll, and perhaps some who didn't make it, again next year.

I have no idea how you managed to corral such a lovely filly Mims.  There must be a real shortage of good-looking men in Memphis.  Or you're stinkin' rich and just don't flash it around like some.  I'll bring a little more beer to MOJAM, get there early or it'll evaporate from the heat.

Pat I forgot shooting, my family did the whole course even the 7-yr-old.  We did a family contest, shot for score and then subtracted our ages to even things up.  Even though I"m the elder, I still won.  The 7-yr-old came in second though, my lovely wife sort of brought up the rear.  Nobody tease her about that though, she just had a bad day.  She made some good fried cabbage though, anybody get a little of that?  Spicy and greasy, two of the four food groups here in MO (the other two being beer and hard liquor).

I didn't touch a rasp or a bandsaw, but it was good to see so many making shavings.  Looked like Santa's workshop a week before Christmas, and not just because 3/4 of the people were short and had big ears.  No shortage of Santa look-alikes either.  Needs to be a beard contest next year.

It sure was great to finally meet y'all I only wish I could of got to shoot a round with everyone and spend some more time talking with every one. Time just seemed to fly by down there. I will most definitely make the trip back next year lord willing, and maybe Greg will have a little time to himself next year so we can get him one of the recurves shootin. I have to compliment everyone at the twin oaks club, it is a top notch facility and you wont find more friendly people any where. Thank you Pappy and Greg for all your hard work and dedication to make this shoot happen. Here's a quick picture of our very own primitive archer family.

Here's some better hints.

I think Marius has the best overall spot in the group.  I think thats Marius anyway.

Pappy's better half is to the left, but its not Pappy hugging up on her.  But its someone's pappy.

And I was arguably the most popular person in the group at that moment in time.  In a "pork chop around the neck" sort of way.

Thanks D. Tiller ;)  Mullet we would have loved to have met you.  Next year You NEED to mark it on your calendar.  Pappy's wife is the woman on the left.  Sarah is more forward in that pic. we have several group shots so check out the thread on the event page too...I have the longer of the brown hair I am the farthest right in that pic. Next to DustyBaer I believe.  Kind of dark...Monroe, the publisher, is next to JoanieB, Pappy's wfe. Pat is the one who had not shaved yet, this year.... ;) I know some people got left out of each set of pics.  We had to take the group pic 2x and still people got left out.  Everyone sure was kind to the Primitive Archer Mag. crew.  and Dustybaer despite his ramblings in German, seemed so loveable people were just giving things to him! He socked away quite a few goodies.   :)  the home made beer was fabulous and I am still enjoying the home made wine! ;D

Hello folks ! I never knew this site existed until this weekend.  The TN Classic is the first traditional event i've ever attended and I now see what i've been missing.  Nothing like anything i've ever seen before!  The people were top notch, everyone just seemed happy to be there and the place was as pretty as they come. I just wish I could have put more faces with names. I guess that just gives me one more good reason to be there next year!!
RyanO, i'm glad to see you made it home OK it was a pleasure meeting you and your better half as well as everyone else. I think i've found my new favorite site.  wsm coyote

I'm afraid to start mentioning some of the great PA folks I met because I know I'll leave out most of them due to forgetfulness on my part. But I did get to have more then a brief conversation with a few. I really enjoyed getting to know Marius and discussing differences and similiarities between our two countries. Justin and I spent some time around some good bow wood, some of which is responsible for my stiff back I'm sure! ;D

Working on a recurve late Friday night with Ryan was definitely a learning experience...I'll try and have a little better piece of wood to try out next year. Would have liked to shoot some with Ryan, although I'm sure he would have humbled me...yes I spied him shooting at the practice bale! :)
Pat is just as giving of himself in person as he is here. I wish I could have spent more time talkin' bow making with him. Thanks again Pat for the birch bark! I enjoyed talking with Hillbilly and also talking wine making with his charming wife! His son also seemed to be a fine young man.

I also enjoyed some of the dark homemade beer, even if it was already at the bottom of that gallon jug! ;)  And of course Sarah, Marie and Monroe were all a pleasure to spend time with! Glad to hear everyone got home safely...time to plan for next year! :)

This was my second year attending the TN Classic. The folks at Twin Oaks sure go out of there way to make you feel at home. I enjoyed myself more this year despite the weather. I even finished my bow in plenty of time to shoot the self bow challenge. That was a personal goal of mine that I didn't get to do last year. :) From the looks of the numbers on my scorecard I need to raise the goals on my shooting. :-[

Well if you ever "git" your computer fixed and post the pics minus the "latrine exhibit" make sure you photoshop it so I look like a movie star! ;) Or at least as young as "Princess" SarahAnne! ;D  (Don't forget I was the one that donated to/enabled your addiction by giving you just a wee bit of lumber) :)

Pat I thought maybe your camera got lost in that beard! :o  Glad Dick found it.  Did you find the cooler?  It is a shame that my artistic photgraphic talents weren't allowed to be shown to all.  But I guess Pappy is right, it all must stay there (except of course the forest Justin snagged and dragged back to Utah) Poor Koan and who else was in your cab?  I am sure they had good excuses when it came to loadin time. ;D.    Knothead not only picked up Marius at the airport, but he hauled lumber for Justin. Maybe he is called Knothead for a reason... ;)  But I think it is becuase he is just plumb nice!  :)

Yes Marie that (Koan) is exactly what that smell was.  He almost rode in the back of the truck.  ;D
Also, don't worry about the whole story getting out.  You and I are the only ones that know or can prove anything. Everybody else is going by hearsay, and we know that is not admissible in court. Justin

OK before you guys start making up stories, I will tell the truth.  The truth is there is no story.  Marie picked up my camera while I was helping on bows, and took a picture of the inside of the outhouse.  The joke was on all of you that thought there was a story.  Justin

THat is the truth and the bummer was Pappy had just had the trucks out there to clean them.  SO I couldn't even really gross him out! Justin said "here's my camera go get some pics for me."  I thought this will be funny when he gets home.  All it did was prove that Pappy keeps a clean ship when it comes to latrines...so like I said we maybe country and barefooted but the latrines are clean...unless Koan is in there after a Pappy Burger :o

Pappy, the burgers great. I think Brian just has a weak stomach.  I ate it and never had issues. In my book, the spicier the better.  ;) Justin

I just wanted everyone to know that we are so proud of all the guys who came to the Tenn. Classic and made all of us feel like we did something good.  It was so much fun meeting the guys that Pappy talks about all the time ??? Putting a face with a name is fun.  I just don't understand how Primitive Archer Magazine can put out such a neat Magazine with all the folks I met. It looks like to me that everyone is having so much fun together.  How do you get any work done?  Sarah and Marie look like College Students!!
Monroe looks like the Professor. Boy, do all of you have us fooled.  I talked to a lot of folks and they said the same things.  Keep up the good work. Just remember all of you have special friends in Tennessee!!!!!

Just want to let everyone know that my son Forrest and I made it home OK.  We were home by 3:15 Sunday afternoon.
We left Pappy's farm at 12:00 noon so it is not all that far up there. ;D  Yea that means I can go back more often.

We both had a blast.  It was great to meet all of you folks and put faces to names.  I must say I learned a whole lot about making quality all wood bows.  The plan is to put some it to use real soon.

Pappy, GergB and the rest of the Twin Oaks Folks sure put on a first class event.
I will also say that the folks there proved them selves to be of very high character.

David

Glad you had a good time with us characters, hope you come back to visit us characters soon! ;)

Greg:

We were all a bunch of charactres!!!! ;D
But, that is not what I am saying.  You Twin Oaks folks and ALL of your guest are top notch people.
I have to return to Nashville on the 21st for another week of training due to work.  I will talk to Pappy and see if I can drive up for another visit then.  If not, I definitely plan to attend the 2nt annual TOJAM. ;D  It is going to be hard to get that cat back in the bag.

I've been fattening up a couple of cats for some time now, but if the cats got grilled ...I'd be in the dog house. And since we havn't got a dog, there's no dog house...and I couldn't fit in the cathouse...well, depending on what type of cathouse you're referring to I guess! ;D

I just got rid of one rouge,I don't need another,Just kidding Greg ;D ;D you know you would be welcome,Anthony came down Sat. and got a lot of slats cut down for Boo backed bows and other than the scouts wasn't much going on.I did get Wayne Baggett's cut down some weight and re tillered and put him on some horn tips.It is the one he bought at the auction for Keith Brake
that I had donated and he said it was to heavy. At the time I built it it was 53@26 and when I weighted it to start taking it down some it was 60@26 what's up with that it picked up 7/8 lbs.I built it in 2003.I thought selfbows were supposed to loose weight in time, guess it just dried out or something, anyone else had this happen.I have see it some with Wight wood but this is Osage.

Pappy, saw that dark cloud your way...but it pretty much missed us. Had no idea you got as much rain as you did. Bought a new chain saw, spent the weekend cutting up tops from where my lot was just timbered. Got a lot done, but so far just have barely started to scratch the surface. Stiff this morning! :)

Maybe the RH Pappy, combined with a bit of a inaccurate scale to begin with....8 pounds is a lot.

That is what I was thinking Ryan,I have some new scales for my main tillering board, that one has been there a while.Did your bow you built at the Classic check the same on your scale?or have you checked it.I didn't know you needed to ajust the scale the way I have mine set up to account for the weight of the scale but I do now, just don't remember when I ajusted it it has been a few years but I don't know if it has been that long.

Hi Pappy
I have found that timber can dry to a stable MC and exhibit a certain strength but after a few years especially if stored in hot conditions the lignin's in the cells age and cause an increase in strength. So it is an ageing rarther than drying thing and I have had as much as a 10% increase. Does seem to vary quite a bit with different timbers.

I read a post by Tim Baker on paleoplanet that said "Every 10-degrees temperature chance alters wood strength by 2% to 5%."

I replied:

80 degrees vs. 70 degrees 3.5% change per 10 degrees
60# * 103.5% = 62.1#

90 degrees vs. 30 degrees (typical crafting vs. hunting temp change for me)
60# * 121% = 72.6#

Throw in a some moisture content changes and you see a wood bow really does have a mind of it's own.  I've had whitewood bows behave remarkably different from one time to the next.

Pappy, I havent checked it on my scale yet. In fact, I havent touched it since I got back. Im running around like a chicken with his head cut off getting ready for our shoot now like you guys were a couple weeks ago! :o I'll let you know where it comes in at on my scale, but yours said 53#@28" and it felt heavier than that to me....

Ya David I have had Hickory do that after it had been put up for a while just haven't had Osage change that much.It was close to 5 years ago since I built this one so I may have just stopped tillering it and called it that.I can't remember I have slept since then. ;D

Even though wood is dry doesn't necessarily mean it is cured. The tiller and weight can change over a couple of years as the wood does cure. I have noticed this especially with shoot arrows as well as some stave woods. Once it has cured the wood is more stable and less apt to change unless it is affected by moisture.   Pat

Badger's mass thingy would tell you if the bow dropped moisture content, but I never write stuff down anyway and definately would not remember 5 yrs later.

That's me I should keep better records,All I can usually tell you about one of my bow is when I finished it and what the weight and draw was at that time cause I put it on the bow.I wished now I had done more like Badger and kept up with it a little better.O well live and learn. :)

Heck Pappy you got me beat.  I don't even mark nothing on the bows.  With an all wood bow, hard to say what the exact poundage is at any point in time, given changes in humidity and temperature.
