I`m only about 10 minutes south of the line... any chance you`d care to get together this comming weekend? I`ll be at a "get outta the house" camp in Fremont, IN, with a group of living history re-enactors... just taking a weekend off to enjoy a little camplife, woodsmoke & friendship. We camp at a place called Wildwinds Buffalo Ranch there in Fremont a couple times a year & have started a winter camp to clear the cobwebs of the mind & get away from the flatlanders for a while... ::) PM me if you`d like directions & bring your knapping kit, I`ll have mine there to pass some of the time.

-
Mullet,
Searching my memory for the place you mention but am coming up blank.
Is it on I-10 proper?
I'd be happy to track it down.
If its on the north side of town, are you thinking of the 610 loop?
Or maybe I-10 just north of Downtown?

Im from Puget Sound Washington. Stared knapping, and getting there, but much slower, i think, than if i were to gain instruction
-
I thought there were flint knappers in that area.
-
ionicmuffin,
There are a number of knappers in the Puget Sound area. Check out the Puget Sound Knappers web site at http://pugetsoundknappers.com/ for more info. If you email the Web Master with your info he can hook you up with knapper local to you. This weekend, November 3 & 4, there is a knapin at Millersylvania State Park, a little south of Olympia. If you can make it, I'll see you there. One-on-one instruction, rock and tools are freely available. Info on the knapin is here: http://pugetsoundknappers.com/events/Millersylvaina_Knap-in_2012_Announcement.html

Quesnel, British Columbia, Canada here. Just a newbie. Have a bin of obsidian that I've been staring at for a couple of years. Watch lots of YouTube videos, made some tools, but still just staring at these round rocks trying to figure out the first strike. Should get started now that I finally retired and have the time.
Any knappers in British Columbia want to take on training a rookie?
-
Used to go there with my jet boat and fish for those beautiful rainbows and you really do live in a fantastic place! Joe
-
Thanks Joe. Yes, this is a great place to live and play. Great fishing for rainbows, brookies and browns. Also very good hunting for bear, Mule deer and moose. Starting to see more whitetails around here as well. I'm looking forward to archery season opening up September 1st.
Cheers.

I'm just getting started my close friend Bob Walden help me get some basic beginner tools together.
I've been watching knapping videos on YouTube for months now.
This is the very first point I ever made it was a scrap of flint Bob gave me that he knew wouldn't make a good point but it gave me some good practice. I have about 25 or 30

Here's the tool kit we put together I know I'll have to get a bunch more but for now at least I can break some rock!
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v478/Huntinfool7/Bowhuntin/Knappingpoints1res_zps81f995bc.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Huntinfool7/media/Bowhuntin/Knappingpoints1res_zps81f995bc.jpg.html)
Those points you see there are some cast aways Bob gave me to see if I could sharpen them and in general make them legal to hunt with in WV (no barbs mainly).
Of course I've been burnin' the midnight oil reading all I can here!
We are planning to make a trip up to the Flint Ridge Knap-in in Ohio Aug 31!! Really looking forward to seeing in person all the demonstrations and perusing all the stuff the venders will have for sale, especially the flint!
~CHF~
-
I remember when i started knapping about 14 years ago. The next year i made it up to the ridge, I still remember that trip.
Be sure to bring some $$ because the rocks add up. Find Eric Morris aka Morris rocks ask him about a bargain bucket. Basically its a 5 gal bucket full of flint for a good price. not top shelf stuff by any means but still knappable rock and good practice.

Hello everyone, I' m in Kingston, Ontario. Middling Knapper. Not far from Marc, but a ways from New Liskerd and T'under Bay! Closer to you upstate New Yorkers, I bet! My current quest is to locate some local rock called Trent Chert. Also on the lookout for some Ongwanada, but it's at the other end of the lake.

Thought I had posted here but I guess not. Knapper, knife maker, and bowyer living in the middle of Delaware (lower slower Delaware) I don't know of any other knappers or knap ins in the area except for Oregon ridge in Maryland in May.
-
Brian from Harbor Beach,MI. Not much knappable rock here but I have found enough to make 3 arrow heads with from my farm. Best stuff I've found is chert balls from the limestone quarry really hard to work but supper durable points
-
Kenny from SE of Kansas City MO. I just began knapping since spring. I'd like to meet other knappers in my area. I met a couple guys at our traditional bow club shoot this weekend. Sure is nice to visit with and learn from fellow knappers.
-
I'm from east-central Wisconsin, halfway between Milwaukee and Green Bay. I just started knapping last spring. Been practicing on bottle bottoms, porcelain tiles from the Habitat for Humanity store, and a box of novaculite I eventually ordered online when I got sick of the glass and tiles. A Californian twitter acquaintance also sent me some obsidian, but the're mostly round balls about the size of baseballs, and I don't know how to get into them.
My points aren't much to look at yet, but I'm learning a ton as I go, and slowly managing to hinge less often and get em skinnier.

A friend who studies such sites also gave me some samples of rocks taken from actual paleolithic quarry sites he was working at in the driftless area of Wisconsin. The Hixton sandstone is very grainy and the others (I can't remember what they are) are very irregular and full of nodules. All are well beyond my paltry knapping abilities at this point.

Flakescarred4Life glad to have you here. I learned almost everything I know about knapping from Patrick and a few others on you tube to. I actually really like bu hunter to. He helped me a lot. He has a way of explaining things that works for me and a pretty good since of humor to. Now I mostly learn from my failures and successes. Still learn something every time I make or break a point.

Hello everyone,
I live in central NC and I have just begun my primitive journey. After doing some research I have pretty much found out that NC is a bit slack in the materials needed for Knapping. But then again from what I have found so far every thing I have read is from 5 years ago or more. Which leads me to my Question does anyone have a good source for material on free land?

Good initiative this thread. I want to eventually knap points for arrows, I have the TBVs 1-4 and just order bows and arrows of the Native Americans of J Hamm for starting it up a bit. Any other recommendations for literature? Eventually I want to use the skill to make arrow in Geronimo style to give back a bit to the club were I started, as a gift together with a lil recreation of his bow, as that hero archer of old is our clubs namesake.
I'm located in a the Netherlands, in the center province Utrecht. Does anyone know good Knapping material for Benelux? Seems to be allot of info for US but not much for us europe side
