Title: Patty's camp-o-rama and primitive skills weekend And Birthday Bash
Post by: Pat B on June 19, 2007, 12:04:27 pm
I've talked to a few folks about having a primitive skills/ bow and arrow building weekend at my property. So, now I am looking at the end of July for this. How does that sound to anyone that can come?
I have 25ac, mostly wooded but in what was my native plant nursery area is a 20x20 open barn and enough open area for all sorts of things. We have a stream that comes through the property and a small waterfall that is just right for bathing, if you don't mind cold water :o....and an outhouse(if you don't mind sharing with the field mice).
Let me know what you guys think and if this would be a good time for you all.   Thanks,   Pat ;D

Hey Pat I'll be there no matter what date it is. We can talk about this other Thorn in our sides here in Mebane. I'll bring my shaving horse and one of those Osage pieces I got at Pappy's.

Post by: Calendargirl on June 19, 2007, 04:48:12 pm
Dana, you actually going to shoot a deer for my presentation?  It is a moving target you know, you have to hit it, with your arrow, it maybe moving, and your arrow actually has to hit it or hit somehting, maybe I can field dress the bushes your arrow goes into... ;D  Oh what to do? ;D

Dana, pick up some road kill for her to mess with. It wont be edible when she is done anyway.  In fact if it is like her bow at the Classic, it wont even get started.   ;D Justin

Naaaah, Koan, they are just blowin' steam... ;) trying to buy time while they see if they can find their arrows. :o  I think we can attach one of those beeping things like Sharper Image sells for keys to Dana's arrows.  ;D  Or the like the "clapper"  just clap your hands and you can find your arrows ;D.  Then, Dana, show me which bush to field dress.  ;)  Notice how kind Pat is, no biting comments? :)  Suthun' gentleman that he is, plus I  have his respect and admiration and I ain't givin it back! ;D

Marie I just shot a great big trophy POISON IVY bush still wanna demonstrate ;) ;D While yer cleaning it maybe you can
get my arra back fer me.

I like the clapper idea Marie it would save on lost arra's fer sure, think ya might want to patent that idear.

Holy wuh eh guess I'm  just a hick Yooper with no manners. Marie do ya know what a Yooper is?

Title: Re: Patty's camp-o-rama and primitive skills weekend
Post by: Calendargirl on June 19, 2007, 07:22:16 pm
a "hick Yooper"  webster says it is the "anti-suthun' gentleman" ;D  Is that right?
Title: Re: Patty's camp-o-rama and primitive skills weekend
Post by: Calendargirl on June 19, 2007, 07:25:27 pm
After great thought, I realized that "beeping" isn't very primitive  >:(
so how 'bout ,Dana, you "clap" once and then your arrow responds with a caveman like "ugh!"  :D or if you want to be fancy  8) and scare off any game (if there is any left) it can say "ooga booga!"   ;D
Dana, you would have your own tribal dance going just looking for all your arrows! ;) "clap" "ooga! booga!" "clap" "ooga! booga!" :o (of course the "ooga booga" noise is a chorus of arrows)  ;D  ;D
Title: Re: Patty's camp-o-rama and primitive skills weekend

Nope not anti southern not at all. Ya never know I might retire down thar.
I like the "UGH Me a Yooper"

You do a pretty good job of keeping our egos in line Marie, I guess everyone has a mission in life eh. ;)
Title: Re: Patty's camp-o-rama and primitive skills weekend
Post by: Calendargirl on June 19, 2007, 08:46:05 pm
I am not opposed to gutting road kill...as long as you boys will eat it! ;D  "clap" "ooga booga"  ;D
Dana, it is the oddest thing, but you aren't the first person to tell me that   :P   ;D  It is a very hard job, but somebody has to do it! 8)

You should move down here...Koan thinks it could be heaven and Pappy and Greg know that it is! ;)  Justin even drove, I dont' know how many hours just to spend a weekend here! :D
so what is  Yooper?
Title: Re: Patty's camp-o-rama and primitive skills weekend
Post by: DanaM on June 19, 2007, 09:07:39 pm
Marie a Yooper is some one who lives above the bridge in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan(UP). Michigan is divided by a 5 mile suspension bridge us that live above it are Yoopers
those that live under the bridge are Trolls ;D Were a mixed bunch of nationalities up here but very proud of our heritage. The largest town up here is about 40, 000
with many if ya blink ya missed um towns. I think we may be more hillbilly then many of you southern folks. as to road kill I've stopped and picked it up and yes ate it why
waste good meat eh. From here to Nashville is 853 miles according to Google, not to bad I'm hoping to make the Classic at Pappy's next year ifin I come I will bring ya bottle of Yooper wine ok. And I'm sure its tough keeping us all in line but ya luv it dont ya?

Hey Dana,Is that bridge the one I heard about that is so high some people are afraid to drive over?My wife worked with a guy from there, and he said there were locals that would drive the tourist cars over the bridge for them.

I think I could make that date, if nothing don't happen. I could use some help getting started on another bow and picking up some primative knowledge. Who ever said it was so easy a caveman could do it! ;D

Eddie its pretty dang tall, I've never heard of tourists afraid to drive over it but wouldn't surprise me. When the wind is blowin
you can see it swaying back and forth. Some of the lanes are just metal grates ya should try riding a motorcycle across it ;D
Quite a while back a Yugo got blown offin it a gust wind picked it up and tossed it over the side. Here's a pic

I apologize Pat for getting yer thread of topic,

Looks like we have about 12 folks coming, as of now.  ;D  My wife and I will prepare supper(chicken spegetti) for Friday night but if everyone would bring something (venison, taters, onions, carrots, etc) for Saturday night we will try a pot luck like what Pappy had at the Tenn. Classic. ;D   Other than that, please bring what you will want to eat in the mornings and for lunch. We can always do a community breakfast if ya'll want to. I will have plenty of good old mountain water for drinking (branch water when needed ;D) but please BYOB et al.
I have dispatched 2 copperheads(small but mean) and 1 yellow jacket nest where the camp-o-rama will be so come prepared for such things. Also, this has been an unusually tick-ful year for us. Permanone spray or other insect repellants are recommended.
Looking forward to seeing all of you guys there. It is gonna be a fun filled weekend! ;)    Pat

Dick has offered to make a chicken and sausage casserole for Friday nights supper so those of you coming won't have to think about what to eat when you get here. Kitchen will be open all night if needed...of course you may have to help yourselves if you're too late getting there. ;D   Saturday night is still up for grabs. Are ya'll up for a pot luck?
For those interested in bow building, please bring what tools you may have and if possible a shaving(bow building) horse. If you don't have any of these things don't worry, we will have tools and a work bench for you to use.      Pat

TJ, Here are directions...Take I-40W to Asheville and exit on I-26 towards Hendersonville.  Exit I-26 at the Asheville Regional Airport on to Hwy 280(4 lane). Follow 280 to Brevard where it ends and becomes  Hwy64/276 near Wal-mart. Keep going straight into Brevard and at the center of town, at the Courthouse, turn left on Hwy 276S and go out of town about 4 or so miles to a right turn onto Island Ford Rd(Look for Rockbrook camp and Mud Dabbers pottery). Go about 3 miles on Island Ford to a left on Walnut Hollow Rd. Then follow Walnut Hollow for 3 miles to a left on Carson Creek Rd and 1.3 miles to a right on Calico Lake Dr. We are the 2nd drive on the left(gravel) on Calico Lake Dr.  Look for the signs.  My home phone # is  828-884-6205 if needed.     Pat

Scott, You can follow these directions from Asheville.

Mole, quickest way from Sylva is tho take 23/74 E through Waynesville to I-40 E at Clyde. At Asheville, get off exit 46 onto I-26 E toward Spartanburg, and then get off the Asheville airport exit (old exit 9) onto 280 toward Brevard.

Chris Cade and Chad Q. Take Hwy 25 from Greenwood towards Greenville, exit Hwy 276(Travelers Rest) towards Cesar's Head, not far past Furman U. Up the mountain past Cesar's Head State Park, through Cedar Mountain, past the entrance to Connestee Falls(a gated community). A mile or so past Connestee Falls look for Connestee Rd on your left. Turn there and follow it until you dead end at Island Ford Rd and take a left. If you miss Connestee Rd, your next road on the left is Island Ford, after you come to the bottom of the hill. Follow Island Ford to just past the body shop(on RT) to Walnut Hollow on your left. Turn left on Walnut Hollow and go about 3to4 miles to Carson Creek Rd on your left. Follow Carson Creek Rd to the end(little over a mile) and turn rt on Calico Lake Dr. We are the second driveway on the left(gravel).   I'll have signs.    Pat

This past weekend we had temps in the mid to low 50s and highs in the 70s so you low country guys come prepared.  ;D Not bad for mid July! ;D    They are calling for afternoon showers(scattered) and temps in the 50s to upper 70s. I'll be mowing tomorrow. I'm having to rent a mower because my 2 year old mower blew out the rear end. >:(   A little shifting stuff around and a dump run will get me where I need to be to greet Dick on Thursday and everyone else on Friday and Saturday.
If any of you have and play musical instruments and its convenient to bring them please do so.  8) Looks like about 15 to 20 folks will be here to play. Most will be camping but a few will be day folks.

I see that we won't need to bring any firewood. All those candles will provide plenty of heat and light, and we can probably roast us a pig or two over the cake. My only worry is that when we light that sucker, the fire lookout tower on Mt. Pisgah will see it and send one of those big tanker planes over and drop a load of water on us........................... :o

OK everyone interested, a weather report.  Mid 80s during the days and low 60s at night. Chance of afternoon and evening thundershowers. Better chance of rain showers on Sunday...just in time to pack up. Nothing like wet camping stuff to deal with later. >:(  Oh well! that ain't never stopped me before. ;)
I'll put up some signs for you as you get close. Dick will be here sometime tomorrow so he and I will start setting things up. I do a dump run first thing in the morning then set up the 3D targets and other shooting areas. Knapping area ready, I added a 12x 24 tarp out from the open barn so we will have lots of cover from the sun or whatever ::). Tiller tree set up and all work table tops are clear of things. ;D
Anyone have any questions or need directions please let me know.

Alan, Come to Asheville on I-40 then exit on to I-26 towards Spartenburg. Take the exit off of I-26 at the Asheville airport(Hwy 280, towards Brevard) Stay on 280 into downtown Brevard and turn left at the Courthouse(Hwy 267). Go out 276 for 4 to 5 miles to a right on Island Ford Rd(look for Mud Dobber Pottery shop). Go on Island ford Rd about 3 miles to a left on Walnut Hollow Rd.(look for a white sign with a bow and arrow drawn on it) out Walnut Hollow about 3 miles to a left on Carson Creek Rd(look for another sign), follow Carson Creek Rd for a little over a mile(you will go under an underpass) and shortly after take a right on Calico Lake Dr on your right(another sign). We will be the second drive on your left(gravel, and another sign) and you are there.    Pat

here is a few more...Barry McCall working on a soap stone bowl with a primitive adz. Scott working on his first osage bow, Tina "Hillbilly" Parker, Tom B and Kathy "Mullet" Parker, Bob McMinn working on his first bow. Bob worked all weekend chasing a ring only to find out on Sunday that there was a fatal wind shake buried in his stave. He was a good sport about it, learned a lot and I sent him home with 2 osage staves and a locust bow ;D.  Needless to say, he was satisfied. The last pic is another one of the knappers.
I will post a few more later.     Pat

ps. Oh, by the way...Cody "Hillbilly" Parker, Steve and Tina's son walked away with the PA "t" shirt, signed by all that attended, that Marie donated in PA's name. Cody won because he asked more times than anyone else..."when is the drawing for the shirt gonna be". ;D

And finally, here's what we all felt like after a long weekend of not enough sleeping, too much food, too much liquid refreshment, too much scraping on wood and beating on rocks, telling too many stories of questionable veracity, and pretty much having a helluva big ol' time (In other words, when are we doin' it again?  ;D )

Well, there's the Tn. Classic in May...not quite a year away! :)

Pappy and a bunch of us hunt usually the last week in December at LBL (TVA's Land Between the Lakes) in Tennessee. The hunting is difficult due to lots of woods, acorns usually gone by then, and a short time to pattern deer...but the company and eating is always good! ;D

Got it shooting yet, Scott?  ::)
Scott and Bob spent hours chasing rings and getting their staves in shape. Scott got his bow to floor tiller before he left but poor Bob found a fatal wind shake that only really showed itself after hours of hard work. Thats why I sent him home with 2 staves and a bow. He earned them and I didn't want him to go home frustrated.  ;)      Pat

I'm squinting :D Actually, about 10 or 15 feet away the arrow disappears.Even though you can see it coming almost all the way,you have to just reach for air when you hear, see it leave the bow.It is moving faster than it looks. That was early in the morning and I just wasn't in the mood to get hit with a blunt. We had stayed up till 3 a.m. the night before. :(

Dang guys don't you know the secrets. Make a really inefficient bow out of something like willow.  Use a 800 grain arrow.  If the arrow gets to you, it ought to be going about 4 fps and real easy to catch.  If it smacks you in the chest, it ought to bounce off nicely.   ;D Justin
Title: Re: Patty's camp-o-rama and primitive skills weekend And Birthday Bash
Post by: mullet on August 03, 2007, 08:14:42 pm
Justin, now that you said that.Another buddy at a karate cook out with lots of liquid refreshments got so frustrated not being able to hold on ;Let the blunt tip arrow hit him in the chest and then caught it on the bounce. ::) I used to let it hit the forarm and then grab it before it fell.Cades bow had the arrow in the picture really moving and I didn't feel like any pain that early in the morning. ;)The feathers were burning little white streaks across my hand as I tried to grab it.
But being serious, stand down range while somebody you trust shoots at a target and you will be surprised at the way an arrow flies.Low fletching and field points are really hauling butt.I've only tried catching them with flu-flu's and blunts.Except once with a compound set about 55# and regular fletching. That was a big mistake.Lots of bruises.

Missed meeting Allen and seeing some of the "action" shots. That photo of Cody trying to drill a hole in the coconut (Almost my knee) is really funny. I was on a very strict diet the week before but the food we had was on it. Thank god. Things are looking good, I feel good, had a great time and as Pappy says, Life is good.   ;D

Thank you all for the nice comments. Its funny how just a few days with nice people can energise you for weeks, months. Hillbilly, I'll bring a "bag" of pineapple back for you after Thanksgiving. Even deliver it as I have to pick up some "stuff" from Pats. We usually spend the week with my son down there in Florida.  I love raw pineapple. BTW Eddie, Thanks for the point----- again.

Dick, I'm glad to hear your surgery went well and wish you the best of luck in reaching your goal! I didn't really get to meet you at the Tn. Classic, I didn't know who you were until after the fact and Pappy told me. I was so busy that I missed out meeting and getting to know folks unless they were making a bow. Again, I'm glad you're doing well...and yes, "Life is Good!". :)

Dick give me a shout when you come down this way.I wish the point had been one of my better ones, but I'm proud to have it in your case. Now offering to give BAGS of pineapples to hill people for free I take offence. The man was talking about a chainsaw and trading the sacred Osage  :o. I will send SEMI trucks, loaded with pineapples for SEMI trucks loaded with Osage all day long. The hill people's mouth will be raw from eating that lovely, succulent fruit. And all they need is OSAGE. ;D
