Title: Sinew Question.
Post by: BowJunkie on August 01, 2011, 12:56:01 am
Once you have acquired sinew.
Dried it out.
Pounded it with a rock
Then pull it apart into long shreds.
Their really isn't a need to chew it correct?
I mean,,, one could just dip it into water or glue and proceed as normal?
The reason I ask, I tried chewing about 6 nice strands and twisting them together end to end.
This stuff isn't very tasty. Just wanted to make sure that chewing doesn't somehow magically realign properties in the sinew.  ::)

You can soak sinew in water to soften it but have to use glue to make it stick. You can soak it in hide glue and it will soften and stick. I prefer to chew it until it is soft and make the wrap. Your saliva and the sinew makes it's own glue. I don't chew sinew for it's flavor. I chew it to make it soft and to make it stick without using glue. Also, I only chew a small strand at a time so I can keep it from tangleing. While I'm wrapping one piece I am chewing another.

Thank you for the response Pat, I was not aware that saliva and sinew would make it's own glue.  :-[
LOL Triggerfinger, maybe I should soak the sinew in bacon grease before I gnaw on it next time.

I chew my sinew when makin' arrows cause i'm usin' smaller quantities but when i sinew back a bow i soak the sinew in a pan of warm water then squeegee with fingers and dip in hide glue......too much sinew to chew for me !

I chew sinew only for arrow wraps or other small diameter wraps. Anything larger or for backing a bow I use hide glue with the sinew.

When I sinewed bows I just soak it in a glass of warm water for 10 mins or so then wipe dry. I do chew it for arrows sometimes.

If ya don't like the flavor then you probably didn't clean it enough. The sinew I use in the museum has no flavor that I can detect. I usually put a few strands in my mouth while I am talkin to visitors and watch their faces when they ask what I am doin!

I chew my arrow wrap sinew and soak my bow backing sinew.

I'm not patient enough to leave the sinew in my mouth until it's soft.  And I use a lot of fish glue.  Sinew tastes pretty good compared to fish glue.  Not sayin' I've put fish glue in my mouth... it was an accident. ;D

very true, im actually not sure there is anything that can make me loose my apatite, the only thing i can think of is possibly instant coffee(bad experience last summer where i made coffee the night before for a early morning fishing trip on a very warm night, waking up to spoiled milk and coffee at4 am is not fun :'( still went fishing though, almost chummed the water ::))
