I've being meaning to do this test for a while,...here we go ;D
My 3rd bow is a selfbow, immediatly developed huge compression fractures on both limbs,
I really shot the bow a lot, even hunted it a few times taking a few mongoose,contrary to what should be expected the bow never suffered, so I'll try bend it to the end and see how much it can take,, this should be fun :D :D
The other one, my 5th, is a bamboo backed Guava, In those days I had no idea, and left the boo really thick, it developed a huge compression fracture on the lower limb. I'm not exagerating when I say it looks like a crust displacement after a big quake, and goes from boo edge to boo edge, glued a few layers of coconut fiber than wrapped with artificial sinew, and shot the bow a lot, but not hunted it.

Sounds like a good test Manny. I have always wondered how long a chrysal would last? I had bamboo backed walnut that a deep fracture like yours edge to edge, never did get it to completely fail, bamboo is some tough stuff. ;) I hoged off the belly and noticed the crack went all the down to the backing.

It would be more interesting seeing how far a perfect bow would bend. One that has already failed on the belly is no longer trying to pull the back fibers apart when it is bent.

It is very hard to break Guava, thinner branches of the guava were used by caribbean indiand to make loops and used as basket supports , so it can be bend 360 degrees.

You're string angle is past 90 degrees now, so you're pulling the limbs back/down without the tips moving together much. In other words, you did about all you can do to break that bow. I was sort of cheering for a break, just for the excitement. Cool test, thanks for sharing.

Did the chrysal change any? Develop any new ones? had you fixed the rpoblem with tiller that caused the chrysal to begin with? Yikes that is drawn a long way.

Lennie, no extra frets, no change in the original one from what I can guess under the wrap, and no I never fixed the tiller

Finally! that's quite a bend. I don't think vine maple is that strong in tension. I broke the bow pictured at just about 32".

Very interesting. You could tell it was going to break where it did. If you could have made the outer limb bend some it would have gone further

Awesome.
Just think how overbuilt your bows are. You could probably make them significantly skinnier and/or shorter, knowing what you now know. Your bows were certainly not "90% broke" at full draw.

It surely makes me feel good as a hunter knowing that the equipment I take in the woods is just about bombproof ;D
yeah Marc, that's where the 2 big fractures where.
almost makes me want to try one of my good bows :)......better not think about it ;D

Manny, can you make a English Warbow from Guava wood? Have you tried? If so let us know how it went we may be hitting you up for staves if it can bend like that in a warbow with good cast!

Manny, did you ever unstring the bow and check for set as you were progressing to longer draws? It would be interesting to know what kind of set it was taking at 40+".

D tiller, never tryed a warbow, but my best results are with narrow deep desings, Got a heavy ELB in the works

How much for a stave Manny? I LIKE IT!!! If you can supply in bulk I am part of the archery troop for the Camlann medieval villlage in Carnation. Dave Tinsley and I are building bows there and we will probably be buying in the boat load if you can supply them....errr maybe not that much but in quantity! ;D

Can ya send us a stave to try? If ya can supply us we may be able to create a new carrier for ya! ;D How fast does it grow? If its grows fast enough maybe you can plant it like a crop and grow some premo straight staves for longbows! Save you from having to go trampsing through the jungle tangle over there.
Yew is getting harder and harder to get ahold of. Seems like they treated it like a weed for so many years in the longing industry and so much is protected that the price of a stave or finding one is tough.

well I couldn't get it to 45", hit a wall at 43, plus the string just about came of

D tiller it grows like a weed, DLNR has being trying to contain it but no luck.
It wants to grow like a bush, that's why I have to go in deep, narrow dark valleys to harvest.
I know I promised seed in the past ::) ::), I'll get you some ;D
curing time is over a year for this wood ::) ::)

How about a stave instead? I think the stuff wont grow up hear in WA. Just too cold in the winter. Think about a troop of medieval archers all armed with Mannie's guava warbows!!! ;D

I can look for a stave for you,.......but remember that strait Guava is an utopia ;D, how long ya need it to be ??

Mannie, I nead to draw 30" to 31" draw at arround 80-120# maybe 74 - 77" long? Maybe a bit longer but if the bend is as good as whats shown then arround 74" would be fine.

Yeah Pat, I knew it was a tough to brake, but now I feel even better about the durability, and as a hunter to me it's real important, I know my bows gave me most of the time pass thru on pigs, so even if not the fastest, there's plenty there,...now I know that in normal conditions there's no way they break, what more can you ask ?? ;D ;D
This experiment validates what I've being sayng for years, ...I don't really know much about bowmaking, but I've just got lucky to find a wood that let me get away with murder ;) ;)

LOL Manny that was something else to see. That's some tough stuff for sure. I'm suprised though that the BG outlasted the selfbow. I would have expected the bamboo to splinter way before a good self back.

Remember me also north shore I want to buy a stave, I have two guava bows now ,but I need one with less LBS, Getting old you know, Built my first guava bow in 1962.
Need a stave about 68" for a #50 Bow.

Mickey, after I heard that tick as I was bracing the BBG, I didn't even expected it to get to 28"...what a surprise, ...but most of all the fact that the boo even if it was so thick that in some places was about the same size of the belly, never overpowered The Guava, this gives me a total new outlook on the compression capability of this wood ;D

the first BBO I made was like that..I .called it an OBB....osage bellied bamboo bow LOL .It's 10 years old and still shooting BTW although it doesn't get shot much.

I am novice at building bows. Last week me & my friend while discussing the various woods that were
available to us for making bows; I rejected gauva (on the basis that it has lots of splits while drying....)
as a useful bow wood... I could'nt have been off the mark!
