Title: You never know 'til you ask
Post by: jonathan creason on December 02, 2011, 05:29:49 pm
A while back my mom said she'd like a piece of stained glass for the new cabin they're building.  I told dad I'd check at a place here in the county I work that makes stained glass window, but just never did make the time to run up there.  Finally today I was in the area and I decided to stop by.  Unfortunately all they did was custom work for churches and stuff, but I got to chatting with the owner for several minutes and finally asked if he had any glass scraps he was going to throw out.  He took me to a big tub out back that was full of thick glass in all sorts of colors.  Then he went back inside, got a box, and told me to fill it up and come back if I ever wanted any more.  I got blues, greens, purples, reds, oranges, and some clear.  The only downside is I can't knap worth a crap so I'm probably going to ruin all of it.

Think of all the practice you'll get and at NO cost in materials!  Plus, I'm betting some of that glass will turn out to be better than what you give yourself credit for.  Congrats!

I've knapped it and as thin as it was I did get a few points out of it. It is very brittle and thin, but pretty.

This stuff is actually about an inch thick, Eddie.  I was actually looking for something thin to pressure flake, but the guy said he had something much better than that.  I'll try to post a pic or two this weekend.

Lucky!  The last time I was in glass shop, they used EVERY piece down to the size of grains of sand.  The scraps were broken down into mosaic-size chunks and the smaller stuff was ground into "sand" for one of the art classes they taught there.

Here's a couple of pics I snapped quickly when I finally got the stuff out of my truck this weekend.  I turned it so you could see the thickness, but it makes the pieces look much smaller than they really are.
