we are not a formal "club" tho we are thinking of a name and logo-for fun!
but we meet every wed and work on bows, and shoot.
we meet at 5p to shoot then inside to whittle wood round 6 or so.
its a very informal group.
everyone is on a different stage of their bow at any given time. no "rules"
dont have to show up "on time"
folks have different work schedules that dictate when they can get there which is fine.
have plenty of tools and benches if you dont have your own.
seasoned osage orange staves for sale very reasonable if you dont have wood.
our "instructor" has been making bows about 13 yrs.
periodically we have others from pa and elsewhere who show up.
many with yrs of bowmaking experience
the class is held in the "west bottoms" area due west of downtown kcmo.
1524 st louis.
if ya get there after 6p bang on the door loudly(we are in the back of the bldg)
or come around to back door and bang there(more likely to hear you)
we can also exchange phone numbers and i can give ya detailed directions.
and i usually send out a text every wed am as a reminder.
you can also call when you arrive and i will be sure to let ya in.
just a ragtag bunch of artists hippies and rednecks who love to make and shoot bows
anyone who wants to make bows is welcome!
-
I was there last week and had a great time visiting with everybody. I even had the privilege of watching a beginner take is first few passes with a drawknife on his first Osage bow. Under the knowing eye of Wayne (a very knowledgeable bowyer IMHO) I'm sure the fellow will be flinging arrows in no time. Sadie does some very fine work as well and is a joy to talk with. If you are in the area, it is worth you're time to visit. I know that I sure will when I can. Thanx for the invite and warm welcome Sadie, Josh
-
well shucks..thanks josh!
it was pleasure to meet you too.
and i sure do hope you can make it back again soon.
we got lots more to talk about and i know i'm gonna learn lots from you.
be safe out there
-
Where does everyone meet at? I've been working on a few bows with no guidance other than some books. They are shootable, but not what my goal was. I'm presently trying heat tempering, not sure about the results yet. I need to let it re hydrate before shooting, but I'm afraid I made a shootable bow into scrap wood.

if ya pm me yr phone number and a name to attach to it, i will gladly text ya on wed as a reminder
some of us arrive around 5p to shoot bows in the woodlot before going in to whittle on osage
-
ok, that's not far from where I work.
-
occupant -glad you were able to make it by last wed. come on by anytime and bring a bow to shoot or work on!
-
greetings folks-
posted this in the flintknapping forum but thought is toss out here in case anyone misses it.
we sure would like to add this to our classes.
wanted to see if any yall are or know any knappers in the kc area?
we have out little bow making group on wed nite near downtown kcmo,
and were thinking it sure would be great if a local knapper would be willing to come periodically
and teach some of us a few things.
we have ample space outside but that would have to commence once it gets a bit warmer(tho we do have fire capabilities)
and the light stays later. we could also work in the shop but would have to take care not to leave a mess.
the outdoor area is graveled and unless it really got outta hand, "new" gravel could be left there.
it would not need to be on wed nite. it could be bout any nite of the week(tho i think most folks have commitments on weekends)
it wouldnt have to be every week either.
once a month, twice a month, whatever works for the person(s) who would be willing to teach.
please shoot me a pm if you r in kc or know someone who is.
sure appreciate any leads yall can provide.
we can either provide our own rock(ive a pretty good pile of missouri and arkansas chert)
or buy from anyone who would like to teach knapping
thanks

i forgot to ask the person that i mentioned a month ago, have to work tonight i can hopefully remember to ask him then.

I wish I lived closer to you all. I'd be there every Wednesday. Maybe one of these days though.
Sadie, I put together a bow building workshop every year and get about 12-15 people every year and would love to have more. I'd like to invite you all out this time around. Normally I have it here in ofallon, mo, but I have been thinking about moving it to my farm in mid mo. and make it a weekend thing. I try to have it in Feb, but maybe march would be better weather wise. Anyway, I'm glad to hear about your club, and wish there was something like that around here. I've always wanted to start something like that.
-
Would love to join y'all sometime. Im near Columbia so I'll hafta wait till I have a Thursday off to recover, lol
-
Its well worth the trip! I make sure to stop in when I'm in the area on wednesdays. Sometimes I stop in when I'm not supposed to be in the area! >:D Don't tell my boss :-X Josh

That was a lot of fun last night. Being, for the most part, city locked I actually got to see and touch tree stave. It was quite exciting and I really look forward to future meets. I'm also glad I got to share the city wonder of a basic board bow that went from backed "1 by" to almost floor tillered in the roughly 2 hours I was there. I think next time I go, it might even be ready for a trial shoot. I will also have to bring out some of my earlier board bows.
It. May be the first Wed of the new year before I make it back, but I do plan on coming back and will try to post when I plan on heading back. Look forward to seeing you all again.
-
thanks for coming Tshank
look forward to shooting that bow
-
KC is about 3 hours for me one way.So are you Dvshunter.I'll try to get there though sometime.

Sadie,
is there anyone attending the Wednesday evening meetings from KC MO or from east of KC? I live about an hour southeast of the city and was just wondering if there is anyone else working on bows in this part of MO.
-
My place borders the prairie home conservation area near prairie home, mo ed and patches.
Sadie, ks might be an option for me. I was going to try for Tenn. And mojam this year. I haven't missed a mojam sincei started making bows.

most every one who comes regularly is from kc. and others from various burbs. cant think of anyone who comes from the southeast part of the city tho. one fella comes up from louisburg, another from north of cameron(like a 75 mile drive one way!). of course gun doc is from farther west of kc but drives a truck and when he's near kc he stops by. tshank who came for the first time last week is from south joco ks area. the core group lives in the heart of kcmo. another list member who comes periodically lives north of the airport. no, i do not think there is one person coming from yr area right now.

we are not trying to replace mojam or any other event.
never intend to compete nor we will ever be as big.
the farm is too small for hundreds but we could easily have dozens....
prairie rattler will always be word of mouth and by invitation
and of course, all the good folks on pa are on the invitation list :)
-
I'll have to add it to my to do list. 8)
If I'm going to three, why not four right. >:D
-
Dvshunter, I am kinda familiar with your area. I currently live in Warrensburg, but used to live in Columbia. I still hunt around Boonville. Sadie, does your group meet every Wed. Night? If so I may have to run up there on evening.
-
yes, we meet every wed around 5 or 6
we will NOT be mtg next wed, the day after xmas, and we may not be mtg the wed following new years
tho im not sure about that one yet
we WILL be there tomorrow nite(wed dec 19th)
other than that we rarely miss a wed.
the wed of the week of mojam, the wed of the week of bois d arc
wayne and i are both gone
and we have missed a couple two yrs ago count of snow.
-
Dang..... Was plannin on comin day after Christmas...to far from Columbia when i gotta work next day... I'll get there someday

My thanks to Wayne and his son Luke for sharing their knowledge with me. It was good to meet you and everyone at the gathering this evening. I'll be back; I'm hooked. If there are any hoodies left to buy, I'm interested.

Are you guys still meeting every Wednesday? I would love to stop by and check it out. I have just recently gotten into this wonderful and fulfilling art.
-
Falcon, send Sadie a PM or Email. I'm sure you'd be welcome to join in.
-
Yea, I got ahold of Sadie already, but thank you.
-
any teens in this club or is it all adults? Are there any events in the KC/Topeka area coming up (bow-making, flintknapping, or the like)?
-
Ms SadieJane has not posted in some time now. Send her a private message and introduce yourself, tell her we all sent you and give her our best! They are a great bunch of folks and I am sure you would be welcome.

Yes, there are kids of all ages there from time to time. I was there this last Wednesday and had a great time. It was mostly adults this time, but many times the age group consisted of folks from 6 to there 60's. As far as events go, MOJAM is next month in Marshall Missouri. Its about an hr and a half drive east and a little North from Kansas city. I would highly recommend that event. There's a thread about it in the events section. Josh

do you guys ever meet up on fridays or weekend nights?
