This is a D/R Bamboo backed Santos Rosewood bow I recently made. The bow is 62" N to N with 1 1/8" wide limbs that taper to 1/4" nocks, the limbs have a slight D section to them. It pulls 55# @ 28" and even though I haven't chronographed the bow I can tell from shooting it that it's fast. I glued in about 1 1/2" of reflex and it holds about 1/2" after shooting it several times. You can see from the picture of the limbs that the Rosewood has a very attractive grain to it. t's a very oily wood and does not seem to be bothered by moisture. Here's some pics

hey mark! - nice bow, sure looks fast!
frank
-
that is beautiful!
-
Marc, your bows have a look all there own. 8) Thats a beauty and I'm sure it is a good performer with those dimensions. ;D
-
Blows me away Marc, awesome bow and beautiful.
-
Thats a beauty as usual mark, I really like how you deflex them right through the handle, gives the bow some awesome lines. Steve
-
Great looking bow. What did you use for tip overlays? It looks like a real smooth transition from overlays to limbs, thats the detailed stuff I need to learn.tradrick
-
That is absolutely gorgeous not only for wood but for your D/R profile. Got anybody around to crank it back?
-
Wow, that bow is drop dead gorgeous!
-
The rosewood definitely has a beautiful grain to it. The bow looks wonderful. What is the white in the riser? Justin
-
Thanks guys.
Steve. I believe that there's more performance in a bow when the deflex is in the handle. I would have tried more reflex and most likely a gain in performance in the process but there was to much grain runoff for me to be comfortable doing it.
The overlays are Buff horn, Tradrick
One last coat of finish drying, Don. Then I can do a full draw
Justin. The riser is built up of White Ash, Bubinga then Rosewood.
I'll most likely use this bow for hunting this Fall, unless I sell it first :)
-
Now that is a beautiful bow! Can't wait to see it at full draw. Btw, what finish did you use on that bow Marc? Just out of curiosity.
-
Thank you Justin. The same finish I use on all my bows. Alternating layers of tung oil and shellac with a final coat of paste wax
-
Can I be nosy and ask why you alternate between them. I just used tung oil for my last selfbow and really liked it, went on real easy, dried fast and looked dynamite. Thanks Marc.
-
thats a pretty bow
-
That is the kind of finish I want to get. Any certain brands or application tips your willing to share? That bow is very thin wow I think I would be asking for trouble trying to make one with those dimentions. Nice work.

Well the way I see it. All 3 are different from each other. The tung oil comes from a nut, the shellac is alcohol based with a beetle extract and the wax is well wax :). The tung oil by itself is a mediocre moisture repellant and so is the shellac but the wax is excellent. I figure that alternating layers of the tung and shellac must surely be better than each by itself and the wax is like icing on the cake. For me moisture protection comes first but I also like my bows to look good.
Jesse. I use a 2# cut of shellac and a good name brand tung oil. The paste wax is by Johnson and is recommended for furniture and floors

In any case here is a full draw picture

Thanks Marc, makes good sense to me. Your full draw is impeccable as usual. Superb job!
-
You're a real inspiration, Marc. That bow's a beauty, and the tiller looks perfect to me.
-
terrific design, tiller, and wood. I have learned some things and gotten plenty of ideas from seeing your bows. I see that it is Dalbergia nigra, in the Leguminoseae family. Seems to be a good family for bow wood doesn't it.
Dave
-
Wow, you're right, the grain is stunning. That's a beauty!
Sean

Thanks for the full draw, Marc. This bow has got to be one of your best.
-
Beautiful bow Marc, don't see anything I don't like on that one.Beautiful wood and tiller is dead on
it should be a real shooter. :)

Thats a very nice bow Marc bettcha will hunt good.............bob
-
You really need to work on your tillering skills. ;D ;D ;D Perfect as usual. What a beautiful bow. I hope you have a chance to chronograph it sometime. Graceful lines and beautiful wood. What a treat.

Thanks guys. I haven't been making many bows for myself lately. I was actually thinking of auctioning this one as a blank on paleo initially but changed my mind. I'm glad I did :).
It is indeed Dave. Expensive though. It's like $25 a board ft.
Sometimes I get lucky with the tiller, Josh :)
-
Great full draw pic. I think I will keep that one for a reference when I'm tillering the next one. I think its easier to find mistakes when I have something to compare it to.

Beautiful work, I'd say a work of art as well as a fine weapon. Say, my brother also spells his name with a c. I probably said that before.
Dane

Marc, I like the profile on that bow. Looks good.
-
Nice looking bow, the grain of the wood is exceptional.

-
Thanks again guys.
Dane. The English spell my name with a K. You must have French in you
-
That full draw is pretty sick ;D
-
There ought to be a law against one person having so much talent. :)
As always your work is exceptional.
-
Thanks again guys.
Dane. The English spell my name with a K. You must have French in you
Yes, some French ancestry. But no Danish, so my first name doesn't make sense in that respect.
Dane
-
You are a funny guy, Matt, but thanks
-
I don't usually like R/D bows, but this one is admirable.
-
Great Bow!
;)
-
I was just looking at that full draw pic, bow has great string angles. That same design is even taing over the modern bow community.
-
I shot a Bamboo backed BL bow today that I made a few years ago, this bow here to be precise.
It's very similar to this Rosewood bow but it has some string contact, also the limbs are wider. Length is about the same, draw weight and draw length the same but there is a noticeable difference in performance. It's easy to tell the Rosewood bow is quite a bit faster.
-
Mark, on the bbl, do you remeber what the starting profile was before tillering as opposed to after tillering? Steve
-
Steve
It's been 3 years since I made this bow. I'll have to have a look in some older pictures to see if I have some of this bow before tillering. I'm not home right now and it's going to be a few days before I get back. I will let you know
-
I love the BBR R/D, Mark, as I said on another forum and was happy to add the FD to my TBD pages already.

Beautiful bow Marc, you are a master!
-
Sweet bow Mark, and the tiller looks awsome!....Brian
-
Thanks guys.
I've heard that Santos Rosewood is no longer available as it's illegal to cut it now.
