Title: Sinewed Juniperus Virginiana
Post by: blackhawk on February 09, 2012, 09:01:41 pm
This is a pyramid sinewed ERC that was sinewed last july if ya'll remember. Well here she is finally all finished up. Its 54"ntn, 1.900" at fades and straight tapers to 3/8" nocks. Rabbit fur under a black leather handle wrap. Tillered to 25". Its in the upper 50's draw weight. I never weighed it. It only lost an inch of its setback and is still setback an inch after unstringing. I am very impressed with this combo...its fantastic, and has excellent cast. thanks for peeking...Chris  :)

Absolutely gorgeous... Wish it were mine....  >:D >:D Awesome bow... It would be cool if you could do a chrono comparison between that guy and your mighty mouse... I'd be interested to see the results.

Sweet, I'm working on another ERC myself.  I hope it turns out half as good as that.  Josh

Couple of questions...

De-crowned stave before sinewing?
flipped tips?

Looks great, I bet it is a snappy shooter.

thanks peacebow...she is snappy ;)
thanks hammer...its a very comfy warm grip
thanks ifrit..i might chrono these, but i dont really need to,to know that they are both excellent shooters.
thanks gun doc...cant wait to see your ERC...this was my last stave...i need to go get some more and make another sinew joby out of one...i think sinew is the best backer for ERC
thanks bevan...yes it was decrowned some so i wood have some of that pretty heartwood in it.decrowning isnt as bad as a lot of folks make it out to be. i think it was best in this case and it wasnt that hard to do...and yes the tips were flipped by boiling and putting over a form...it bent very easy like yew does
thanks sadie
thanks seabass
thanks soy...just tying up some lil odds n ends.

Fine lookin' bow. I love those short ones. How long do you think you would've had to make to get a 27" draw?

Howdy,   That's a very nice looking bow!   Sinew and juniper is a great combination.

I'll step in with a reply to lesken2011 ( feel free to tell me I'm wrong)   I would suggest an additional 2 inches for every additional inch of draw.

Nice Chris!  I've often wondered about sinew on ERC.  Hey, what kinda paint did you use?  I've been wanting to paint one but am stuck on what to get.

woah, I like the handle wrap, it complements the bow very well, I mean the fur and all. Very cool blackhawk!

That is a very impressive bow. Great profile and great tiller. Perfect tip flips to help with string angle as well. Congratulations on a very well made bow.

Pyramid profile is really pretty efficient, even though it might get thrown to the side to make way for molly or basic flatbow profile alot of the time. I bet that bow is wicked fast. I am really starting to loose my love for denser woods. Really nice job on that one. I like your paint job.

Thanks Clint...go for it... ;)
thanks lesken...yeah id go at least a couple inches longer for the safety margin with this finicky wood...altho a lot of woods n sinew will easily pull that far at this length of bow
thanks mp
thanks matt..I first dyed the whole back(sinew)red, and then just used some black paint i picked up at a craft store for the designs and side edging
thanks cesar
thanks patb...im awaiting to see yours in the future...n yes a beautiful marriage indeed if treated with love and respect
thanks keenan

That's pretty sweet man!  I love the design and the fur.  I'd definitely like to get into painting/dying my bows in the future.  Time to get some sleep, there's bows to be built tomorrow!!

Beautiful!  I love ERC myself, but I've never had any luck bending it with steam or dry heat.  How long did you boil the tips?

Great looking bow. Awesome finish job, and I love the looks of a pyramid bow.
I do have a question. I have a two stave of ERC that are 80" long and clear end to end but the have only a small amount of heartwood. It it necessary to keep some heart wood in the belly to handle compression or do you think all sapwood would do? I love the look of a heartwood belly but ther just isn't enough on these two. They were both split from the same 4" diam log and have been seasoniony for almost two years.
Mark

Thanks Dazv

Thanks Mark..I hear the heartwood is a lil better in compression than the sapwood, but an all sapwood belly is fine as well. But one of the reasons for making a bow with this stuff is because of the beautiful heartwood. I think you wood be able to reduce some of the sapwood down and at least keep a strip of heartwood down the belly. For future reference when harvesting ERC try to cut n find a bigger diameter tree because a lot of the times the sapwood is an inch to almost two inches thick depending on the tree. Cutting larger diameter will ensure you have enough heartwood to have in your belly. This stave if I remember correctly was 84" long to begin with. Make a short wide sinewed bow n you might keep some heartwood, because the shorter and wider you go the thinner it'll be. You'll just have to reduce enough sapwood to ensure you'll keep some.

THanks Blackhawk, I'll see what I can do with them. I had planned on sinew for one and maybe rawhide for the other.
I might try a short western na bow with the sinew like you suggest.

Anything special on bending it?
Does ERC bend easy??
Can the curve be a bit bigger???

Really beautiful bow you have made there!

Thanks guys  :)

Medecinewheel..nothing special for bending it,as said i boiled for an hour, and bent it over a form with a metal strap over the belly and zero splinters or cracks. It bent like a noodle and very similar to yew when boiled. Id imagine you could easily bend a bigger curve with no problem. This was from a stave from a tree i cut myself. Thanks
