Title: What's Your Day Job?
Post by: osage outlaw on February 14, 2012, 01:55:56 am
I've noticed that we have a lot of interesting people on this site.  I think most of us are evening bowyers and have to work a normal job.  I was just curious as to what kind of different jobs everyone has here.  Just from reading posts I know we have teachers, truck drivers, museum staff, and more.  I'm not sure what exactly Mullet does, but I know I want to apply  ;D  Any job where you get to run down wild hogs sounds good to me.

You don't have to name a specific company or anything.  I will go first.  I work night shift at a large wastewater treatment plant.  We treat 36 million gallons a day.  It's an easy job, but when things go bad, they go really bad  :o

I'm also the Senior Driller so I'm always in exotic countries teaching local drillers to do it our way. Mostly Brazil and Canada. I'll be heading back to Brazil and going to Mozambique this year.

Good thread- I wondered what some other people on here do.  I am an account manager for a chemical company.  We sell chemicals to refineries, personal care companies (soaps, shampoos, lotions, etc), pharmaceuticals, coatings (paints) among other industries.  I've been doing this about half my life now, started when I was 16.  Like Clint/Bear, had very different plans, but it pays the bills so I can't complain.  ;)

He had a sercurety companty bissness and I got to go to alot of different countrys and we worked for big companys as well as goverments. And made some major money now I don't get rich  but liveing like this lets me live at my own leisure with out fear of dieing. I end joy the slower life.

I manage an interpretive center in a state park at the mouth of the Columbia river. I do tons of maintenance work, but the fun part is interpretation- Talks, guided hikes, demonstrations, etc... The place focuses on history, especially lewis and clark, but i slip in primitive skills whenever possible. Later this week i am doing a one hour primitive skills demo in a local brewpub.
I have also held the following jobs: Deconstructionist, street juggler, door-to-door salesman, after dinner speaker.

Thanks for the offer, but I like my little crap hole job.  I think I have one of the most secure jobs out there.  As long as indoor plumbing remains popular, I'll have a job.  Also, we are tied in with the state retirement system.  Only 19 more years to go.  :(    And I would miss out on all the fun stuff like watching a boiler explode, seeing a 20' geyser of sludge, and watching a guy take apart a pressurized pipe and instantly turn brown  >:D

I'm a professional writer (though my many typos in various postings, and questionable grammar seems contrary to the idea a bit, perhaps). I'm a part-time life drawing model a few times a year for fun and very casual wardrobe requirements.

Past careers have included the US Army (infantryman, then chaplain's assistant and oboist) for a total of 9 years between RA, NG and AR, messenger, and some other not so fun dead-end jobs. I can't forget my first job as paperboy growing up in LA.

Great thread!  I started with AT&T Bell Labs at the lowest possible position in 1978 and worked there until Bell Labs ceased to be in one of the spin-offs.  Took an early retirement and then worked as a contractor before being hired back into the same job when the company was purchased by somebody else.  Most of that time I was a UNIX system administrator.  For the last few years I've been a CAD data manager and now I maintain and write web code, and do SAP administration and Pro Engineer CAD administration.  That was a big mouthful to say that I basically  do what they ask me to so afterwards I can go home, spend time with the lovely wife, sing at church, build bows, knapp flint and hunt deer and hogs.  It's been a good life.

Drying beds grow BIG tomatoes  ;D

One thing I forgot to mention about my job is the location.  The plant is in a big valley that is surrounded by housing and an intersate.  It is like a little nature preserve.  I see turkeys and deer on a daily basis while I'm working.  During the spring, the turkeys will chase our cars and us as we walk through the parking lot.  I watched a coyote trail a doe across a hillside the other evening.  A fox stopped and dropped a pile right underneath one of our security cameras one day.  I walk the property on slow evenings and find sheds.  I found a primitive drill point at one of our smaller plants.  I even got permission to remove a nuisance hickory tree a couple of years ago.  Its nice to enjoy nature while you work.

I'm a welding instructor, 14 years, pressure vessels before that.  Laid off from a sweet high school welding teacher position in 2010, work part time @ two different community college campus. Right now I am qualifying welds for an AWS D1.1 certification.  One of my jobs is going into factories and evaluating welders and developing a program to get them certified in what they need.  I been married 11 years and have two boys, 7 and 4, and I have a septic tank that was installed in 1991, but I live on a dead end road and have a state forest @ my back door and very few neighbors, but the ones I have I know.  Makes for a fine upbringing for my two little hillbilly boys.  ;) derik gratz

Clint this is an awesome thread.

I teach 1st grade in Dublin, Texas. I love teaching and I have fun everyday. I laugh at my own jokes and the kids make me smile all day long. My wife teaches on the 2nd grade hall and during Diego's recess time I can look out my window and watch him playing.

In March of my senior year I dropped out of school. I already had my cap and gown and invitations. I never set out to become a teacher. I set out to become "well off." when I was hong I thought that meant having a job that made lots of money. I'm hard headed and it took me a while to realize that being "well off" is being happy and content with what God has blessed me with. I didn't pick teaching and I sure didn't pick teaching the little guys. It picked me. Best thing that's happened to me in a while. I have been married going on 17 years. I have two daughters 13 and 11 and then I have a Mini Me by the name of Diego.

I live in town, drive a 94 Camry and haven't owned a truck since 99. I bring Primitive Archery and primitive skills into my classroom every chance I get.

I guess that's enough. That's all I have to say about that  ;)

Grew up in a metal fabrication shop and started welding at twelve. On my own and millwrighting at 16, went to PSU to be an engineer but decided I didn't like that. Worked as a boiler maker for years doing allot of Ex-ray welding.  Then had my own fab shop for years, doing mill maintanace and  Hi end railings and creative art. Also had a crane and was operator/owner of that for years.  Now I'm wore out and tired, just do what I can when I can. ::)

I was looking through the posts and notice Pappy and I have similar backgrounds. truck mechanic most of the last 44 years spent about 10 years of that as a fleet manager and the majority of that as a working foreman. Next week I retire!!!! 9 days from now!
CONGRATULATIONS, a couple days early.

I have been a roofing contractor for a lot of years. Spent four years working at the local PD, but was still making more roofing so I gave that up. I am still roofing to pay the bills, but am finishing up my bachelors degree in Computer Information and Technology, doing websites and networking. Being a full time student plus having a full time job has seriously cut into my bow building time.

I get paid to be an NDN! I am an Indian Cultural Demonstrator/Park Ranger at Yosemite National Park in California. I have been here for 18 years. Before that I worked for the US Forest Circus. Anything that gives me a lot of outside time.  My wife and I occassionally teach for primitive skills groups and other similar groups.  For those of you who have attended either Rabbit stick or Winter count there is another PSC in California the first week in May called the Buckeye Gathering.  Most recently I performed on stage and demonstrated knapping at Casa Grande Ruins in Arizona. We are currently court ordered placement for two of our three grandchildren. Between two hours of commuting, chores around the house and grandkids I do not have much time for anything else!

I am a psychologist.  Work with people who live with effects of brain injury.  Did bridge construction to get through school.  I used to to run a fairly large residential facility, but that took too much time from God, the family and the field so now I work private practice and decide for myself how much work is too much.  I count my blessings every day and some days 2, 3, 4 times.  God willing, 11 more years and I can scrape bows and make arrows all I want.

My background includes working as an actor in a professional theater company, a country and western AM radio dj, back to college chasing a biology degree, then running the hatchery in the world's largest (at that time) indoor tilapia farm, heavy machinery, telephone call center crap, and half a dozen other odd jobs as the mood struck me.

Nowadays I piece together a living working part time at a friend's upscale liquor and wine store (sigghhhhh), plus owning one small business of my own (Singing String Archery...Functional Museum Quality Replicas), partner in another small business (Avian Research and Consulting...field research and data gathering, consulting, and other tasks as assigned), plus working for the occasional movie/tv/documentary/commercial film crew that passes thru the area, oh-almost forgot, I also model for any number of artists (Wayne Justus, Corrin Hollenbeek, and a few others).  *grin*

Well, let's see, my first jobs were with my Dad, when I was around ten or so, and it consisted of scraping concrete off of floor slabs, on the houses my Dad was plastering, and mixing plaster for my Dad, any of the other plasters.  Nope no mixer. I was the mixer.  Mixed it in a mortar board.  Which was basically a boat, with 2 X 12 boards for sides and ends, and a sheet metal bottom.  Then after I had it mixed, I would shovel it into a wheelbarrow, and push that through deep sand, to the outside wall where they were working, or inside, when they finished the outside, and then I would shovel it onto the mortar stand, and then go back and load up again, and push it back to them, and start loading up the mortar boards, and then go and mix more.  Quite a workout for a kid. :P  Hell, it would kill me now. :o  Then after high school, I went with a friend of mine whose family worked the packing house circuit, and worked in packing houses, and the fields, and decided I liked the packing house better. ;)  Then I  worked at Lion Country Safari, west of West Palm Beach, as a Short order cook, then I was drafted, and went into the Army, and only had two years to do.  Well I and a bunch of other guys took some tests, and then some more, and as the tests continued, there were less and less of us, till it was just me and a couple of others.  Well were then herded into a room, and were told that we were exceptional, and as such, we were going to get to choose our MOS (military occupation symbol), and as we all knew all US's (draftees) went to Nam! :o  But being as we were so extraordinary, we would get to choose our job, and it would only cost us an extra year. Hell you can do a year standing on your head!  Well, that hook, line, and sinker went down pretty slick! ::)  Well I ended up in Italy as a Cryptographic clerk, and then after using a little child psychology, on the battallion commander against the base commander, I was able to get into the mail room.  Had it made!  Everyone treated the Mail Clerks well.  The cooks would bring us treats, and we would give them their mail early, the supply room guys would let us slide on stuff, etc.  I got to go to Berlin on an orientation tour, and got to go on both sides of the wall.  Very interesting and a real eye opener.  Especially since with my clearances, I was not supposed to be within 60 miles of any communist countries, and here I was 90 miles inside of one! :o  Myself and another guy were wondering around and saw this lady with a bunch of grade school aged kids, in little blue uniforms, with a clip board and some paper on it, and they saw us and came up to us, and said "your Name?" and pointed to the form, and there were a bunch of names on there, and I asked the lady what it was for, and she didn't speak English, and my German was practically non existent, anyhow we signed, after all they were cute kids, and polite. ::)  When we got back on the bus we told our guide about it, and he went ballistic, :o and told us to show him where this happened and we did, and we found the woman and the kids, and he started talking to her, and then he comes back to us, and escorts us back to the bus, and told us NEVER sign anything over there!  Turns out we signed a protest for a political prisoner. ;D I also got to deliver equipment and paper work to the colonel at the NATO Communication cave called West Star. That is after I got out of the communication biz, and got in the Mail room. Only the great part was I had a Sgt. drive me, and I was only an e4.  He did not like that, especially when he could not go into the cave, which was pretty neat, like a James Bond place. All tiled, and mess halls, with various countries, etc. I would have to wait sometimes for a reply, and I would be told to go get something to eat, while they got the replies ready.  The Sgt. didn't like that either.  Sometimes I already had the replies, and I was just cooling my heels, and enjoying annoying the Sgt. because he was somewhat of a Jerk.  He would get all upset and ask what the heck took me so long, and I would tell him it was a long way to where the communication center was, and then I had to wait for the Colonel to get the replies, and requests he had.  I told him, what do you want me to do, tell a full bird colonel to hurry it up!?  The Colonel wasn't the sharpest tack in the box, he had the communication center all screwed up.  It was not entirely his fault, though, it was dumped in his lap.  His initials were D.I.M.  We called him uncle Dim. ;D  Then I was supposed to go to Nam, but I had appendicitis at Ft. Lewis, Washington, and got sent to Ft. Lee, where I again used child psychology against a battallion commander, who had the rep for being an A@@@! and it was justly deserved, and to boot, his command Sgt Major, and first Sgt, were doozies also!  The command Sgt. major had spent time in the brig in Germany, for beating a man to death, :o and the First Sgt. had spent time in the brig in NC for stealing office equipment from the supply pool, and selling it on the outside.  ::), well he heard I was a office clerk at the other company, and wanted me for his own!  I thought nope ain't gonna happen! ;)  So when I went for my interview, he asked me how many words a minute I could type, and I told him 30-35 a minute.  He said that wasn't very good.  I told him I thought it was for me.  Actually I could type 70-80 a minute, and even more on a teletype, so he got on the phone, and said to send the other guy over for an interview, this guy can't even type, I acted hurt, ;) and then he asked whoever was on the other end, if they still needed a mail clerk, and they did, so there I was back in the mail room. ;)  Then I got out, and went to school to be a Dental Lab Tech, and after working at that for a few years, I decided I needed something that would afford me the ability to eat better.  So I worked as a Security Guard for a Buddy of mine in the Virgin Islands, which is a misnomer, and then came back and worked for the Fed, on the Citrus Black Fly program, and then worked at a Buddy's Concrete plant, for a few years, and then worked as an electrician's helper, and was going to get my Journeyman's license, but then the job would run out, so I decided to look for a career, and ended up working for the Fire Dept. dispatch center for 2 1/2 yrs. and finally got hired on for combat.
I also became a professional clown, and then an instructor for public education through clowning to teach fire safety to children, at the Fla. State fire College.  We now teach it at the Elks Youth Camp, because we could not depend on getting the classes, or the auditorium, even though we put in for it almost a year ahead.  If some Mucky Muck from Tallahassee decided he wanted to do a class presentation for some PR or whatever, we were tossed aside, and the students from around the country, were out of a class, and they had to get vacation time off a year in advance, and so did myself and the other instructors.  So the class at the Elks Youth Camp, works out great, and it is entirely free, including food, and rooms, they pay for their make up, and the outfits, we help them pick out at the Good Will.  The only meal they pay for is when we take them out to get their feet wet at Ryan's Restaurant in Character, the night before they do their skits at the elementary school.  Any who, I am now retired from the Fire dept. and my schedule is ....... well, there isn't a schedule. 8)  I basically go to bed late, and get up late. ;)  I have done other various jobs in between real jobs, scraping 50 yrs. of paint layers, off of clapboard houses, and then painting them, in August, for $6.00 an hour, and digging ditches, and cutting and hauling trees away, and basically anything I could do for a few bucks.  But back then a dollar went a lot further.  I remember when I was a kid, my Mother would give me two dollars, and I would walk down to the store, and come back with two pounds of hamburger, a loaf of bread, a pack of hamburger buns, a box of crackers, and a box of cookies, and a half gallon of milk! :o  You can't do that today! :(  Too darn many cameras!  >:(::) ;D ;D

Since everyone is putting previous jobs, I'll add mine in as well.  Before I became a licensed turd herder, I worked at a casket company.  I started out painting them and moved up to an inspector before I left for browner pastures  ;D  I've also worked at a machine shop, lumber yard, construction, and a clothing warehouse.  I worked part time second jobs at a farm supply store and a grocery store when I first got married so the wife could stay home with the little ones.

Sort of a side issue, but I have a neighbor who is painting his house.   He's got a couple of kids in high school age kids that helped him for a while but then dropped out of the project.  I asked him "Why aren't they helping?" and he replied that "I work hard so my kids don't have to."
I won't say that is a totally unreasonable idea, but it sure wasn't on my dad's mind.  I know I learned to use a shovel, rake, paint brush or broom long before I learned to read a bicycle.
I have since made money doing paper routes, lawn mowing, summer farm labor, evening circulation (subscription) crew at a newspaper, warehouseman, apartment manager, and lab animal tech.  Once I received my DVM degree I've worked in general practice, emergency practice,  filled in at spay/neuter clinics and now have a practice restricted to surgery ( mainly orthopedics.)   I've gotten paid for a few of my music gigs, but not enough to seriously endanger my amateur status.

M-P, my dad was the same way.  At 13 I was mowing the neighbors lawns and had a gig where I would wash all the cars at the used car lot down the street.  I think I got paid 5 bucks a car or somthing like that, which werent bad for 13 years old.  My junior year of highschool, one of the guys in my church offered me a summer job at his plumbing company making 7/hr.  and the following summer hired me on at 10/hr until I left for basic training.

Interesting thread. I'm a teacher in a federal prison. Actually, I'm not in the classroom anymore. I'm the GED tester for our place and do a bunch of other testing. I'm also the literacy coordinator who puts people in class. I do a bunch of testing and a bunch of computer/paperwork. I'm still officially a teacher, though. I asked for a snappy new title, but my supervisor vetoed the idea.

I've done a bunch of stuff through the years: infantryman in the Army, Storekeeper/Master at Arms in the Naval Reserves, private security, high school history teacher, corrections officer (state and feds), and taught juvenile delinquents for the state.

Good thread. Went to college and got a degree for conservation law enforcement and spent a few years trying to get a job with little luck- low turnover. Went back to college and got a degree in wildlife science and spent the next 15 years working with just about every wildlife species in the states. I specialized in nuisance wildlife issues, mostly whitetail deer, Canada geese, coyotes, and beavers. Kicking myself for not collecting rock to knap in may travels. Most of my time was spent removing whitetails in urban areas in the Northeast and upper Midwest. I still do some nuisance work for landowners for fun and hunting access. Four years ago I decided to become a Science Teacher and wish I would have done it 20 years ago! I really enjoy working with middle and high school students on a daily basis. I think I learn as much from my students as they do from me. Like others, I have worked a variety of factory jobs, landscaping, arborists, and even pizza delivery.

I'm a Montessori teacher for 3-6 year olds. I just started my own classroom this fall at a great little school here in Portland. I love my job, I know I'm not going to get rich doing it but it's amazing being able to have such a huge positive impact on people at such a critical time in their lives. There is so much going on in these kids heads, it's amazing. My wife's a public school teacher but she will be taking the Montessori teacher training for the elementary level so she can earn her master's degree too. I have a 2 1/2 year old son who just started going to the school where I teach. When I 'm not working or spending time with my family I practice Aikido and make a mess of our kitchen trying to make bows.

Tiller, do you make any soap with "Dragon's Blood" in it?  It is made from the sap from a Palm, in Brazil, call "Draco".  It is fantastic smelling, and is like an aroma therapy oil.  I get the soap, locally, but it is made in New Mexico, by the Cherokee soap company.  Problem, is it is very expensive, and they make it when they feel like it. : )  Also do you make any soap with sandalwood?  thanks, and keep your eye on the Mainland, they might try to cross over! ;)

I have had a few, but the latest job is coding for emergency department accounts.  I code it so it can be be billed out to the insurance.

Have been coding for 6 years or so, was also in billing for awhile, and have worked some other crap end jobs.

Nothing that I had planned on after high school.  I was looking at military but they didn't want me, was going to do cooking school, but couldn't afford the tuition without help, and no help.  So I moved away from home, moved half way across the country, now married, have a son and another child due in under 2 months.

I'm an Armament Systems Maintenance Warrant Officer (how's that for a mouthful?) for the US Army.  What that translates to is that I used to work on guns and tanks, but now I'm a "Technical Resource" for Soldiers that actually work for a living.  When I went home for leave last month, my wife commented on how smooth and soft my hands are these days.  Gonna have to do something about that.  When she met me, I was a carpenter and before that, I was a farmer, so this is the first time since 1978 or so that I haven't had calluses.

I do construction.  I work with my dad and brother. We do it all from the dig to finish. Commercial and residential.  I enjoy the concrete end of things most of all.  Had my own business until the housing industry colapsed.  Maybe someday it will come back? :-\ I hope.

It was just east of Idaho Falls, past Iona.

I spent some time writing about the badger fight this morning, but it is going to be a long story, so I will post it in another thread and paste the link here.  The story will be in installments, since I can't get a solid chunk of time to write it all. Since I lost my job over the deal, I feel like there are lots of details that would be better included.

Dang!  Ya big Tease!  You're being like the old Saturday Matinee's when I was a kid, and the movie theaters would have these serials, and just at the most exciting part, it would end, and you had to come back next week, to see the ending.  Usually, it was, changed from the hero falling off a cliff, to a pile of jagged rocks a hundred feet below, to a nice deep river, ten to twenty feet below.  We always caught that, but we kept going back! :P ;)

Wow, there seems to be a lot of variety here! Most of us seem to be traditional blue collar skilled trade workers!

I'm a Telecom Tech that works in Transport for a long distance company. Basicly the telecom field can be broken down into two general areas. If you pick up your phone and call you friend accross town, that's all handled by a Local Exchange Carrier (your local phone company) equipment and maintained by your LEC techs. I did that work for the Coast Guard after they put me through an Associats degree worth of training in 6 months. It's fun work. Now lets say you pick up your phone and call your friend in the next town, county, state or accross country, that's handled by a long distance company's equipment and maintained by people like me. We transport more than just phone calls, but that's a service that most people can relate to.

Done a lot of different things in my time but for the last 15 years worked as a technical project manager and then an as an application architect for A major bank. That is just a term they put on grunt. I go where they point and pick up the crap when necessary. :)
Basically I do technology project integration. Hardware and software stuff. Fitting new apps and hardware into a tangled nightmare of old applications, software, servers and mainframes that is enough to drive you nutz.
It's a pretty good job though keeps me busy and entertained.

I am a full time free-lance writer, and a professional musician. I play 8 instruments, write songs, articles, and ghost write books. I am self-employed and work online at Elance.com. Life is good.

I have been a US Marine, US Navy Diver, a lumberjack, 3rd Mate on a fishing boat, and a Crop Duster. I have a Doctorate in Holistic Health (ND). My B.S., and Masters was in Biology (minored in physics). I am also a Licensed Massage Therapist and Naturopath, although I seldom practice, except once in a while to help my friend, who is a chiropractor. After my Residency was done, I seldom practiced medicine, even though I have kept my license. I do Reiki, Herbology, Massage, Acupressure, Acupuncture, Hypnotherapy, and Reflexology by special referral, only.

I have been a pro-musician for most of my life. Music is my life. My guitars have always been my best friends. I have also worked as a cook in the past, and am a fair hand in the kitchen. I grind wheat and corn fresh for flour and cornmeal as I use it, and bake all of our bread, rolls, biscuits, cornbread, etc...

I also have a passion for Primitive skills. I shoot muzzleloaders, and make bows, slingshots, slings, bolas, and atlatls. I also do flint-knapping.

Other than that, I fish, kayak and explore. Someday, I want to look for Bigfoot, and Nessie. I also occasionally do local Paranormal Investigations for some organizations like SUFON (Southern UFO Network), NICAP, G.H.O.S.T. (Ghost Hunters of Southern Tennessee), and the American Society for Cryptozoology. I lean towards the skeptical side, but I still keep looking for proof.......

Like I said....Life is good. I ain't rich, but I am comfortable, free and happy.

Was pretty lazy in my youth , my folks wouldn't let me just "hang out" and strongly encouraged me to take any job I could find. I worked in hay fields, caught chickens and loaded them on trucks(worst job ever), lived in an $8 a week rooming house in Gatlinburg  during the summer when I was 16, bussed tables and washed dishes. Joined the Army at 19, got out and went to work in a power plant in the operations side.  Worked almost 30 years in various power plants, ended up as a mid level manager. Was sent home at age 52 when the company downsized. I had an adequate pension from working those 30 years so I abandoned power plants and shift work.

Been retired for 12 years, made a lot of bows, shoot a lot of traditional tournaments, learning to build flintlock rifles, garden and hunt. Like Pappy says" life is good".

I build huge crates to ship freight elevator doors in (occasionally do work on them also). We're the largest freight elevator door company in the world, we have doors in every military or government building that needs them in the US (including the pentagon [i remember doing a repair for that job a few years ago]) white house,  military bases, new WTC, airports, post offices, all the way down to walmarts and grocery stores.

We also do work world wide, the United Arab Eremites seems to like building new building and buying our doors. Also places like Petronas Towers and thousands of building throughout the world.

Theres usually 2 parts to a door, right now we have a job that one piece weighs 1250lbs. All doors are fire rated to I believe 1.5 hours at least (should see them be tested, these thousand pound doors warping, twisting and melting in an extreme heat oven  :)

I go through litterally tonnes of wood a week, sadly, it is all economy crap, I think one day if I happen to stumble across a long piece with straight grain I'll see if I can't make a bow out of it, Most likely will end in failure, but fun none the less!

I've been playing in the mud (digging clay and making handmade pottery)  for a living full time since '84. I've always worked with my hands.(wasn't as good with academics)
payed my way through 3 years of college doing leather work and selling the pottery made in ceramics classes and lived on a food budget of 35.00 a month.
My wife and i started together 34 years ago, homeless and migrant working, living out of the back of an old chevy luv pick-up with hoops over the bed, where we'd put a canvas over for the night. We worked orchards to ranch jobs and simply camped out winter months in the desert making small pots to sell for grocery money. Still making pottery by coil method and firing in wood fired adobe kiln, though I use electric kiln now the most for work that is more colorful. I'm care-taking our 120 acres, volunteer Wyandot language teaching adults and in the public school for 7 years and pre-school at the Wyandotte Nation pre-school as well. Involved in Wyandot cultural revitalization, and active in Longhouse ceremonies. I'm actually a loner and enjoy it, don't socialize THAT much...I write Wyandot songs for children, and learning the old social dance songs, to sing at traditional social dance gatherings when i venture off the property.
The challenge for me is to be completely at home on the land, make things from gathered materials close by, trying not to use resources that are too far off.

I go through litterally tonnes of wood a week, sadly, it is all economy crap, I think one day if I happen to stumble across a long piece with straight grain I'll see if I can't make a bow out of it, Most likely will end in failure, but fun none the less!

update: I now assemble the doors after they are welded and painted ie. install windows, company logo, protecting rubber strip and other labels

I don't know Rob, my in-laws were dairy farmers.  They worked harder than anyone I've ever known and only very rarely got a day off from it.  I will say that the fresh cream sure made great tasting homemade ice cream. :)  I'm glad you're in a great spot.  Hunting and fishing would make it much more bearable.

I'm a stay-at-home dad. I have 3 awesome kids and a fantastic wife who works as a nurse. I take my kids swimming in the creek and stump shooting all summer long. I get to know all their friends and I know what's going on at school. Of course the housework is never-ending, but that's a given. Never saw my life heading this direction, but I can't complain a bit.

Yeah, I'm glad I never had to do the 31E job!  I was always on the law and order side of it.  The closest I came was deserter apprehensions.  THAT was a blast.  I drove all over NC and to KY a couple of times, I also got to escort a prisoner out to the confinement facility in San Diego.  We ended up having a free day in San Diego, that was pretty cool.

I'm a wildlife biologist.  I trapped and commercial fished to pay my way through college in the early 80's. I felt like I needed to give back to the things that meant so much to me as a kid.  I have 8 counties I'm responsible for and primarily meet with private landowners offering technical guidance for wildlife habitat improvement.  I also deal with nuisance wildlife problems as well.

I trap and band waterfowl and doves.

I'm an official measurer for Pope and Young and Boone and Crockett.

Upon retirement I plan to freelance write outdoor articles and wildlife photography, I dabble in both currently anyway...

I'm a newbie to the bow making arena, I hope to complete my first this summer...

I also pay part of my way thru this world with a very small company I own called Avian Research and Consulting, LLP (ARC).  I recently inked a deal with our Game, Fish, & Parks Department to do nest success rate monitoring on osprey in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

Of course, 98% of osprey diet is fish, so they tend to nest fairly close to water that the GF&P stocks with trout.  In order for me to "blend in" and not look like I am stalking some unsuspecting osprey couple's children, I usually dress and act like a fisherman.

So in effect, I am getting paid to go canoeing, flyfish for trout, and watch birds.

(Didja all feel that...Ol' Roy suddenly hates retirement and wants to apply for a job with me!)

Way too many jobs to list, but I have been in management for most of them.  Then I found my passion, in beating people up every day as a Massage Therapist.

I flew UH-1N's in the Marine corps until 2010. Got out so I could see my kids grow up. I took a night job as Law Enforcement/911 dispatcher and realized I still wasn't around my kids as much as I like so I quit.

Now I am full time stay at home Dad, the best and most important job I have ever had.

On the weekends I have been building a log home for my family. You can see some picks at:

Also whittle sticks that ever once in a great while look like a bow (kinda)

I work a collection of odd jobs throughout the year. 24/7 I'm a ranch hand on the property where I live, 7 months out of the year I'm a pinsetter Mechanic at the National Bowling Stadium here in Reno Nevada. I also do free-lance leather working, free lance metal fabrication, a bit of this a bit of that, and attend college. Honestly I dabble in a little bit of everything!

I teach science and math at a Southside of Chicago Suburban High School.  Mostly physics, but I've taught Statistics, Chemistry, and Forensic Science as well.  I also served in the Army as an Armor and Signal Corps officer and did my penance in the litter box during Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.
