Title: Bow of the Month
Post by: beau on February 16, 2012, 01:35:42 pm
Always look forward to BOM in Primitive Archer. Would like to enter one of mine .Bow is 66" tip to tip, #46@28". It's a backed bow made with a bamboo back, ipe core, osage belly and tiger maple riser with deer antler tips . I love making bows . A few years ago I started playing around with wood and bamboo , laminating it .Came up with one that shoots really well .    beau

I thought a self bow was one peice of wood? I love that handle/riser, don't know why more bowyers don't make handles like it. If you don't mind, I'll be asking you questions about it when I get to mine.
Really nice bow by the way. Can't wait til mine look that good.

A self bow is one piece of wood, thats where the "self" part comes in to play. Beau you will need to send a link to Cipriano to enter. Have read in the bow section to rules and such.

So, is beau's bow a self bow or laminate or something even different?

"...It's a backed bow..."  Beau's bow is a backed bow like he said in his post.
Beau, read the rules pertaining to BOM submissions. If you have a PA Magazine subscription you can submit you bow for BOM consideration. If not, you can't!
Very nice bow, none the less. Well done!  8)

Pat, either I'm mistaken or Beau's post was modified. I thought he'd said selfbow. Nevertheless, why don't more bowyers make handles of this shape? Can a selfbow be fashioned with this style handle? I really like it.

Yes Gary you can do handles like this on self bows
They add a bit of length to your bow
I think Rangerb did one similar winged cherub or something he called , it it was from winged elm
