Title: The Heretic Bow, 50" osage, edge grain stave
Post by: half eye on April 21, 2012, 03:34:18 pm
I was gifted some osage a long time ago, this was the last stave....51" with some pretty knarly "wind checks" on both ends, and a very healthy dog leg for about a fourth of the length. It was 1-1/4" square and chased to one ring.

Well I allreadfy got me a couple short osage stave bows and was lookin at this stave, and while wondering if I really wanted to glue up the cracks and make a third one......well the devil jumped right up and bit me. Sawed the stave in half, longwise right down the center of the "back", flipped that baby up on a side and started smoothin her out. I know ya yeller wood lovers is gonna want to skin the old dude but I'm gettin 2 bows from one small stave and this little dude is QUICK for it's draw weight.

Here it is .....50" ntn osage, edge grain, bend through with a set of 6" ears draws 42# @ 26" and just around 46# @ 28. The full draw tiller looks odd, but it shoots so hard I'm not gonna do anymore to the little darlin. The bow is 7/8" wide and just under 3/8" thick....enjoy the pics......my sincerest apologies to all you osage lovers out there.....just couldn't help my bad self.

Heritic?!?!  I missed the part where you added effing-glass.   >:D

Anymore, I am of the opinion that you can do no wrong to a piece of wood, half eye.  Well done, sir.

You made the most out of what you had, 2 bows from what some might have only gotten one, and a nice looking bow to boot.

Fantastic Sir, I love it. The "ears" make this bow IMO.

Post by: half eye on April 21, 2012, 07:22:09 pm
Thank you again, fellas
Dwardo, the "ears" are about like a recurve but they are straight for their length and just bent-up some......dont really add any draw weight but the string angle has the advantage of a recurve without the string noise so it does give ya extra speed.

Thanks rps and arrowwind

thanks Pearly, means a bunch

Jon, the ears do help and if ya look at the braced shot I probably could of brought them forward more, and still had the string clear (string lift-off) makes the bow noticably quicker.

Still trying to figure out what's odd about it rich??? ..... looks like a half eye shooter to me!! Don't anybody get that kind of bend from a sliver better than you :)

Thanks for the kind words, and not gettin after me for goin "board" on a perfectly good stave.

k-hat, lesken, erik thanks again.....coaster the tiller is a long ways from symetrical, but it shoots way out of proportion to it's draw weight, I guess it can just be bent like the oldman, eh?

Not a thing wrong with that!  It's amazing to me what an experienced bowyer can do with just a little osage.  Thanks for the inspiration!

Howdy Rich
You dang ole Heretic!
Get ME near a band or table saw and I'll carve up anything. I haven't been around for a while, been meaning to give you a call. Damn glad to see that you are still crankin em out! Nice job, as always.
Really good to see that your still shooting those telephone poles that I shoot. Kinda like shooting an elephant gun with the right bow. Mine may not be that perdy, but they do make a nice...THUD sound when your hunting meat.

OK, I'm rambling.

God bless

Ron

Another sweet bow Rich!! I've got a few chunks of that yellow stuff now. I'm aiming to get something like that out of at least one of them. I've got one really twisted up stave that I'm not sure what to do with, but you may have just given me an idea. Thanks again for the inspiration my friend!! ;)

Thanks Rich for the kind thoughts. Mean old farts like me don't go away easily.
Almost finished with a new hunting knife. Not the best looking thing in the world, but exactly what I want on my hip. All I got left is decorating. Can't wait to send you a pic. It's a heavy beast...This weekend I will PM you some "mostly finished" pics.

Looks great Rich. I'm sure some might cringe, but if it works for the kind of bows that a person like to build, and the end product is pleasing to you, who cares?  Often it is breaking out of the norm, that teaches us the most

Most tribes from the great plains belt from the Kiowa Apaches through the Northern Cheyenne built, basically, those bows, I think they'd agree with you Rich.

Half Eye,
You should be ashamed of yourself!  Using imagination and creativity is not permitted.   Not to mention having a little nerve to try something different. ;)
I think the full draw picture looks pretty nice.  She shoots quick, eh?
I have been building backed bows with the same grain orientation for both backing and core.  I like.

Love the curves, and wouldn't have guessed the shape at brace and draw. Great, just great!
