Title: Deer kill off
Post by: Pappy on September 11, 2007, 01:04:50 pm
Just wondered if anyone else around the country was having this problem,we have some kind of disease going around,we thought it was BlueTong but the TWRA says it is something else.It is
caused by the flies and nats. They say we could loose up to 50% of the herd.I have only found
2 on my farm so far but it won't stop till it comes a frost and around here that is sometime in Nov. most years. They also say we have to many deer but I have never had to shoo them away to get to the stand so I would say we don't. :)

Something happened to the deer here in my neck of the Smokies several years ago. Used to be quite a few deer around, and it seemed like then all of a sudden they were mostly gone. There were I believe, only fifty-some deer killed in my county last year, including gun, bow, and muzzleloader season. Compare that to 1,000-2000 in most NC counties.

Hillbilly, I have only seen about two dozen in the past two months. There is a 6 point and an 8 point in this area. It is only about 5 miles from your spot.  None in the last week and that is unusual. I have not seen any in the area you will be hunting in. I usually see them at the far end of that field. Offer still goes to film your hunt for a day or so. Maybe we can catch something nice on film.  ;)

Like Dana said. The winters of 95/96 and 96/97 killed off about 50 to 75% of our deer. winters kill off some deer most years. :'( :'( :'(
