This is a bow I made a few months back. I waited to post it until after I skinned it. I waited to skin it until I had shot a couple thousand arrows thru it and I was sure it was worthy of the only two real nice copperhead skins I had. I did'nt want to waste them on just any bow. I wanted them to go on a bow I knew I would use alot and would last a long time.
I harvested the wood near the Shoo fly creek in southern Sumner county Kansas, about 3 yrs ago.
The skins were harvested very near my house by two different neighbors that know I am always on the lookout for nice copperhead skins.
The tools used were chainsaw, sledge and wedge, drawknife, bowyers rasp, cabinet scrapper, chainsaw file and sandpaper. The finish is 5 coats of tru oil. The skins are glued on with TBII.
The dimensions are 52#@27". It is 60" tip to tip. approx 1 3/8" at the fades with a taper to the tips that are a little less than 3/8" at the shoulders of the nocks. The tips are very mildly flipped with zebra wood overlays.
Although it has around 3/4" of set when unstrung, its well balanced in the hand. It shoots smooth and really spits an arrow. I'm pleased to share it with you all and hope you like it. Danny

Wow!!! Looks great, the slightly stiffer outers on that makes me believe it would hammer an arra home...any hand shock?
-
Not much handshock just a gentle little bump .Outer third is minimal mass. Its a dandy to shoot. Whisper quiet and plenty fast. It will definitely be my hunting bow this season. Danny
-
I enjoy it very much ;)job well done
-
Thanks. Its time for bed. took me darn near 3 hrs to figure out how to get the pictures from my computer to photobucket and then to post em. Good thing I don't have any early appts in the morning or I would be dragging my butt for sure. Danny

Very nice bow,I like that style till,it's what I use most times.Skins look very nice also.Hard to come by copper heads that size around here. :)

Very sharp bow Sidewinder. Those skins are awesome. Great job on it.
-
Sweet hunting rig ya got there Danny ;)
-
Functional and pretty! Nice bow!

Very nice Danny. The ultimate combo of wood and skins IMO.
-
Beautiful bow. Did you split the two skins and apply them in halves? That looks cool.
I've had one copperhead for about three years and am still looking for another, apparently not hard enough!
-
Nice job, SW. That combination is purdy for sure. Sweet bend, too!! :)
-
Thanks fellas. I have been wanting to get around to posting it for a month or two but just so little time so much to do.
Tom Sawyer....those are two skins. One I've had for about 3yrs and the other we finally got about 4mths ago. They grow big around here. Theres more where that came from. Its just a littel hard getting neighbors trained on how to properly kill one without them blasting it to smitherins or beating it to a pulp.
Everybody knows I like skins now so its just a matter of if what they bring me is still usable for bow limbs. I've told everybody here to leave the little ones alone. Let em grow up to be bow skins I say. Danny

Danny, thats a fine job on that bow! I love that combination and you nailed it. From the tips to the tiller that bow is gonna be a great huntin partner!

That's a beauty! Those skins are fantastic. After looking at your bow, finding some copperhead skins are on my to-do list. Congrats
-
At-a-boy Dan! I've seen her in action and she's a beaut. I hope you can put it to action in the woods this fall. Another fine south Kansas osage bow from the few and the proud around these parts!
-
I must admit that I'm not much a fan of snake or fish skin backing but those copperhead skins on that osage is beautiful! Nice work sir! I just hope to be able to make something half that nice someday. :)
-
That Sir, is a deer killin machine right there. Weight and draw are perfect >:D

Love it!! Them copperheads are SWEET!

Nice bow Danny. Mike Smyth

Thanks guys. I've got a few more copperheads but they are smaller and more of a grayish and brown and not in as good a shape due to improper killin. It seems we have two types around here ( if there is such a thing). The big ones are always this color and they are close to 3 footers. I found one on the road the other day that would have worked out ok but it had too many buzzard marks on it to be worth anything.
I really like the fact that it not only dolls up the bow limbs but it is natural camo as well. Most of my bows are barebacked and look beautiful in their own right, but there is something about skinning em that just takes it to the next level.
-
Very nice!!!
That should launch a heavy arrow real well :)
Copperheads look great!!!
-
Great classic look on the tiller. I think that'd do the job.
Gabe

Real nice sage bow there Sidewinder, like the skins and that tiller looks spot on to me. Bet that bow spits a mean arrow.
Greg

Osage -n Copperheads.... like 'peas - n - carrots! Well Done.
-
You sure know how to "book'em, Dan-o!"
Don't leave that bow where the locals can get at it! They'll have it smashed to kindling in no time!
-
Thanks again guys. It does spit a mean arra, the thing I like about it is its so quiet and is well balanced in the hand, almost like its not there when your walking along.
BlueGill.... yeah like peas and carrots. I like the darker color of the osage when it has been well exposed to the sun for a while. Takes the neon light syndrom out of it and it matches the copperhead colors perfectly..
JW yeah, I been teachin em how to kill em with out destroying em. That way the snake is not a wasted kill and it can finish its presence on this earth as eye candy and natural camo on my bow backs.

I don't know how I missed this one, but I did. That is gorgeous tiller! I love everything about it as a matter of fact. Josh
