Title: Selfbow Challenge Buckthorn character bow (pic heavy)

I know I'm a little slow, but I finally got it done! A lot of you guys saw me building this and I figured I would post the finished product. Its buckthorn (I love it!!), about 55# @ 27". 59" NTN. 1 1/8" at the handle, 1 1/2" at mid limb, tapering to 1/2" nocks. She stands dead flat after shooting a bunch, and holds 1" reflex at rest. I was surprised how much wood I had to remove in order to get it down to poundage! It only weighs 15oz.!! Tips are bloodwood. This is my first attemt at a Strunk style handle wrap, it turned out OK. This bow shoots a fast arrow(I'm surprised at how tight the string is at brace!) and is quiet. In the braced photo, there appears to be a hinge just below the handle. I was worried when I first got a string on her!! Its simply a natural deflexthat is actually a little thicker there. 8 coats of oil and a coat of wax. enjoy,

Great character in that one, real nice bend and top notch workmanship on tips and handle, way to tame that rugged wood. I love it. Still have some buckthorn in my shop, it scares me, not quite up to the challenge yet.

Post by: Weylin on September 24, 2012, 01:16:39 am: Sweet bow, man! Nice job on the Strunk wrap too, looks better than my first attempt. One thing that Mr. Strunk did on the wrap that he showed me was tamp down the lace so that it sinks into the leather a little bit. I use the flat side of our wooden meat tenderizer to whack it down and it makes for a smoother, more comfortable grip, especially on the back where all the lacing happens.

You really mastered that piece of Chittamwood Wood. It's very interesting wood but tough and resilient.... I love it !!!!

Buckthorn! It's a "'junk wood" in that it's an aggressive, invasive specie that is taking over large areas of public and wooded lands.

'European Buckthorn; Problem for Ecosystems,...'
"...tests showed European buckthorn to have approximately the same values as hard maple in bending strength, stiffness, and hardness. Specific gravity was also similar to that of hard maple, although additional samples should be tested to confirm this."

I like to see that the stave had problems and how you delt with those challenges. And, those curves, well done. It'll make meat for sure.

It's a beautiful bow! I can't wait to get out there and get me some Buckthorn.

I cut a tree on my place that was nice and straight , split it in three staves , I gave one to Ksbow in Kansas and one to the president of the Oklahoma Self Bow Society. Hope to see a bow out of one of them next year.
