Title: Cherry Barked Vinemaple Bow (more pics added)
Post by: Bryce on September 25, 2012, 09:44:13 pm
Well a friend of mine has been waiting a year for me to make him a bow, so heres what i came up with.
this is a sister to another stave, and is also the compression side.
NtN 53"
Max Width 1 5/8"
bends completely through the handle, built up with rawhide
black on black John Strunk style grip
chokecherry bark
Ebony stained tips, finished with 6 coats of Tru-Oil
42#@26" tillered to 28"

Thank you Greg, hes not really into archery so im hoping this will give him the sickness. :D

ionicmuffin, i know youve been waiting for me to to post this for a few weeks now. im glad you like it, thank you for the compliment

Hunter, i used 6 coats of Tru-Oil, and lightly used steel wool on the 3rd and 5th coat.

Thanks Sharp, cant wait to see your salt cedar bow :D

Thank you Dave, he wanted something that would blend in well and these colors seemed to flow together well.

dmenzies1950, i really appreciate the very kind compliment but an expert bowmaker iam not lol just a kid in his basement :D 8)

Thank you Pat B, im getting antzie about that peach bow of yours.

Coaster500, he hasnt seen the bow yet, but all of our mutual friends have. told him about it, he keeps texting me wondering when he can come and pick it up, its rather cruel  8)

Randman, good ol'viney never seems to disappoint.

JonW, thank you. It stays full width, then tapers the last 12''.

Blackchicken, usually dont have time to snap pictures before a bow flies out the door to some happy camper, work, school, not a whole lot of time to work on bows for myself :( oh you Osage guys kill me ;) 8) if i draw your name in the Christmas trade, ill send you something that screams PNW pride. dont worry i dont take anything too serious :D

Thank you Pappy

Thank you Donald, it shoots pretty smooth, feels nice. my father in law stared at it for a solid 15 mins.

Thanks Dwardo, the look on his face is going to be worth it.

Thank you Eric, i love the way the bark in broken up.

Thanks Brian, :)

Danny, i too love this bow, little bit of my soul is in everyone that get carved, glad you like it.

Thank you Zion, im glad i have enough to put on a few more bows.

ive never seen a VM bow with cherry bark backing so i thought i would do it.
thank you all for the kind words and compliments. thank you for looking.

Keep making and giving away bows like this and you will lose that Pinecone nickname.  Pinecones aren't that nice!

She's a beaut'!

JW, thank you for the compliment. If that's all I gotta to, shoot! I'll do my best;)

John, thank you. We do have a wide variety up here. Where you located?

Thanks Keenan! I've really enjoyed looking at the bows on your website. One of these days I'll invest in the stavemaster. Very useful looking tool.

Thank you Soy:D I'm glad you like it!

Wow, that is a really sweet bow. It takes some talent to be able to back an uneven surface like vine maple with cherry bark and make it look that good. That's just excellent.

Fantastic job. This bow has adorned my desktop as wallpaper since you posted it. I love the rough cherry and how it transitions into the Vinemaple. I thought this was one piece of wood at first and you just decided to leave the bark on.

Limlover, you are far too kind lol thank you for the compliment. Cherry bark can be scattered and filled holes and it looks patchy and has a natural beauty I've loved since day 1. I get my bark from an old half rotten fallen down cherry tree on the backside of the property. Easy to remove. But the back is harder to clean up, but doesn't take to long.

Thanks wicki!
Druid, I agree with yah there buddy. She shoots theough the center on the bow. Couple things happend with this bow. There is a knot in each limb ...about midlimb on both sides. The one on the bottom is significantly smaller. On the tree the tiller was perfect, came in on weight everything was good, but after the first 50 or so arrows the bottom limb loosened up a bit, and after that she didn't move, didn't take any set, came in on top of the requested 40#.....so I left it alone.
Shoots smooth and hits good :)
I'm surprised someone finally noticed lol , or maybe they did and didn't say anything lol I appreciate, you honesty, and compliments. Thank you :)

Mr.Cameroo that means a lot to me since it was my first JS grip. John lives not to far from me maybe one of these days I'll go say hi :) but from what I hear he's hard to get off the golf course lol
