Title: Deer hunting update.
Post by: Ryano on October 04, 2007, 10:42:00 am
I was thinking it would be cool to start a thread were every one could post there story's of there most recent hunt. I'll start, anyone feel free to join in.  :) Equipment: 54@28" 64"ntn osage selfbow, cedar arrow's tipped with magnus 125 grain broadheads.

Last evening 10/3  I left work early and got out to my stand about 5:00 PM. I hunted at the back corner of a cornfield about 80 to 100 yards in the woods at the top side of a ravine at a good beat in deer crossing. I hung my climber in a maple tree and trimmed some limbs for a clear shot. I sat down and watched some squirrels play until about a half hour before dark, with no deer activity. Then all of a sudden I heard some movement up to my left farther up the ravine. I got ready for a shot just in case. It was definitely a deer I could tell by the movement noises. It ended up going down into the ravine behind me with out being seen, so I tried a deer bleat call to see if I could draw it in for a closer look. I got no responce from that deer, but there was another one comming right from where the first had come from that heard my call and decided to investigate. By this point it was starting to get dark. I saw legs comming in under the tree branches and all of the sudden he popped out right at the bottum of my tree, at first I thought it was a doe which I would have shot, but no luck it was just a small 4 or 6 point, not a legally harvestable deer in this area of Pennsylvania. Still not a bad nights hunt got my heart pumping a bit. I cant wait to get back out tonight!

You can leave as detailed a description as you would like, it could be more detailed then mine or less its up to you.  ;D

Haven't made it out in a couple nights. Sat monday in a ladder stand on a oak ridge. Saw squirrels, chippies, blue jays and a partridge but no deer.
The area I'm hunting is big woods and swamp no farm fields and no acorns this year. Not many deer in this area. I jsy got access to this property a week before
season so haven't had much time to learn it. I need to get back in the swamp and do some exploring with all the rain we've had I will need hip boots but could be well worth it. I did have a nice buck cross the road in front of me on the way in so I know there is at least one deer around. Planning on going tonite if I can manage.
Even a bad day in the woods is better than a good day at work ;D

The date on the photo shows the 25th of Sept, but it is actually Oct 2. Guess I will reset it tonight when I charge the batteries. If you look close you can see one of my ground blinds on the left side between the two trees. Photos are from my ground camera and show three Does. There were five of them there. I could have shot the closest one, but sometimes I have so much fun looking at them. They romp and play and chase each other. They are eating clover which I watered for a month. My wife sits in a tent blind off to the left of the photo. The wind direction is just as the camera is looking. I have ample opportunity to get deer and "usually" wait till the last week in October. I will post photos of any I get.

Dana, are there any beech or hickory tree's with nuts on them ? I would search for a alternate food source. They have to be eating something. Good luck tonight!

Dick, nice picture! Did you take the picture? or is a trail cam photo? Is your wife a hunter?

Hillbilly, Good luck on your hunt. Can't wait to hear how you did.  ;D

No beech in my huntin area, and hickory don't grow this far north. There is lots of browse, forbs and mushrooms everywhere right now.
I know deer eat shrooms because I've seen em do it and the partridge I shot were full of them also.
Luck to you also.

Ryano, it is a digital trail camera. Most of the time the deer come  in the afternoon. I position the camera looking a little NE so the afternoon sun does not bleach out the photos. The deer are so curious about everything that they even come over and lick the camera housing. It is too cool to see them do stuff like that. I will have to start using my digital movie camera soon.

Ryano, sorry but to answer your other question, is Amy a hunter? No she is not. She shoots a long bow once in a while with me. She is a good rifle and Pistol shot. On the qualifying target for a Conceal Carry she out shot 18 of 20 guys there at the range. She also did it with a S&W Chief's special, a stub nose .38, and no I don't mess with her.  ;)

Went this morning before work for a couple hours. Watched 2 does or fawns??  for about 20 min. but they never came closer than 50 yards.  Did shoot at a squirrel but missed.

Was really looking for a family of turkeys that have been hanging aroung close to the house. My wife saw the from our bathroom window yesterday morning.

So darn hot here, would have to butcher the same day if I were to get one.  Upper 80's through the weekend here (northern Il.)

Thursday 10/4 (3:00pm) I hunted the same piece off property last night but in a different location. I'm trying to locate one of three nice bucks we've been spotting in a field near the land owners house. I had a thought that maybe they were comming from across the road afterdark so I decided to check it out. As soon as I crossed the road it was bank that dropped off about 50 feet or so , I climbed down into the brushy bottum, where theres a large stream. (French creek) I got down to the creek and found a spot were it looked like the deer were crossing. I had to take my rubber boots and socks off and roll up my pants so I wouldn't get wet as I crossed the stream. As I was about half ways across the stream I looked up stream a ways and saw three doe's crossing in the same direction as me, I froze and watched them, it seemed that the didn't even notice me. I got over to the other side of the creek and only to find willow brush up over my head, ever try to carry a longbow and a climbing tree stand threw this stuff? I hope not, that sucked! Well I found a little open spot over there with a good trail comming out to cross the creek so I climbed up a old willow tree and hung my climbing stand on a branch and settled in for the afternoon. No deer movement spotted until about 6:00, the same three deer I saw on the way in crossed back to the other side of the creek at the same spot and started feeding around on apples. unfortunately for me they were about 250+ yards away. Then about 6:30 I saw three more pop up over in the same spot, and from there on out it seemed like there was one every couple minutes until dark. I watched them feed along the other side right up to where I had suspected they were crossing the road, so even though I didn't have any close encounters it was a good night and I know where to put my stand tonight!  8)

I haven't been since last Sunday morning, and didn't see any deer. The morning before was very exciting when Keith got his 11 pt, but I've already told that story.

I'd like to tell one though that happened at least 20 years ago...I was hunting Fort Campbell in an area called Clarksville Base which at one time during the 60's was an extremely high security electric fenced in area where I've heard nuclear weapons were worked on.

I was using my Bighorn Recurve then which was 65#@28". I had hunted during the morning without seeing deer, and after getting down and doing some scouting I had found a couple of white oaks that were dropping acorns with heavy feeding sign around the trees. I selected a tree and planned to return for the evening hunt. It rained some during the day, and had just finished as I was heading in. I attached my climber to the tree, and tied a string to my bow and climber in order to pull the bow up after me. After reaching 18' or so, I turned around, folded out my seat, and set down. Just as soon as I was seated and kind of looked out over my surroundings, I immediately saw several big does trotting toward the white oaks I was hunting next to. That was good news, but the bad news was my bow was still laying on the ground! I watched the does feed for a few minutes and wondered what to do. Finally I decided I could either enjoy the evening watching the does eat their fill and hope they might leave long enough to allow me to pull up my bow, or...attempt to pull up my bow while they were feeding. Well I probably should have waited, but I was much younger and not nearly as wise then as I am now... ;D  ...so I decided to attempt to pull up my bow. Thus was the beginning of what has ended up to be one of my favorite hunting memories! :)

I slowly started taking up the slack on the string, and even was getting away with the bow slowly dragging into a vertical position. The does were so intent on gorging themselves on sweet white oak acorns that they didn't seem to notice. But just as soon as my Bighorn cleared the ground and commenced to spin on the end of my twisted string, that tended to really get their attention! It was all eyes and ears alert, and I'm sure they had never seen anything quite like that before. Well I hurriedly eased the bow back down the inch or so needed to get it back to mother earth and stop that SPINNING! It took a few minutes for those does to settle back down, and I'm sure if not for those tastey acorns they would have normally been in the next county by now!  ;)

As I've already mentioned, I was much younger and not nearly as wise as now... so I decided to go for broke and try and get that bow in my hands so I could do what I came there for! As before, as soon as the bow cleared the ground it started spinning again and those does went back on defcon 2 alert! ;D  This time I continued slowly pulling the bow up, and my anticipation could not overcome the humor at the sight of those alert does eyes and upward turning heads following my Bighorn on its journey. I couldn't help but smile, and barely suppressed laughing at the sight of those does immitating a rocket about to launch off the pad.  My bow was still a foot or so from my grasp when the does realised what was behind the strange force causing that ugly stick on the end of a vine to rise to the heavens! ;D  I was entertained by a chorus of does snorting and hoofs kicking up dirt and acorns as they left with their new found lesson learned and tucked away in their memory banks. After that day I had several hunters comment to me about how the deer in Clarksville Base seemed to aways be looking up in the trees... ;)

Well, this happened on Monday, the 1st.  I went out to hang my deer camera with my brother out at my cousin's place.  He was curious as to what is eating all their corn.  I drove up to the field opening and set up the camera, and we went back to the car and were talking.  When we went to get back into the car there was a cow horn buck about 15 yards from us.  He went into the woods after about 20 seconds of staring at us.  I got in the car and coasted it backwards out of the field.  Then I noticed I had committed the sin of all sins: I left my bow at home.  :o :'( The deer circled around and came back out right at my camera.  I took my brother's camera phone and decided to practice my stalking skills.  The deer was eating corn so I decided to move as he was chewing and had his head behing a fallen cedar branch.  He was putting his head down and then pulling it back up trying to catch me moving.  But I've been busted on that one before.  I had gotten to @8-10 yards from him when my cousin called my brother on the camera I was holding to get a picture. >:(  Oh well, that ended that stalk.  He needs to be culled, bad genetics, and stupid probably.  I'm not that good at stalking. :-\
The kids are at home on intercession (year round school) and wifey's working so I won't get to go out until tomorrow, if my honey do's are caught up :P

Just been a long week thinking about that deer.  If I get one it will be my first with a bow and first one in about 4 years with anything. :'( :'(

Good story's guys keep em comming!  ;D  I saw about 5 doe's this morning almost got a shot a big one but she knew some thing wasn't right and turned around and walked back the way she came in. It was miserable tonight a balmy 83 degrees whew thats to hot for this kind of stuff. I saw a small buck chasing another unidentified deer, I grunted and bleated but got no responce. I'll be back out first thing tomarrow, hopefully it will cool off a little. Supposed to be in the mid 80's again during the day though. :P

I've been out for the last three evening's, and workin on bows during the day. The first eve was my first time in the woods with all my homeade equip. Went around and checked the stands and headed back for mine. on the way a doe and two fawns jumped and ran - while I was driving by. Got to my parking spot, camoed up and started still hunting in the direction I thought they'd wind up. The wind was in my face and the sun was at my back.
Got about 100 yards from the truck and saw movement through the brush - antlers! looked like he was working a scrape or nibbling at some acorns or something. I eased down where I was to survey the situation (no concealment). No sooner had I kneeled down than a car went by and spooked the buck my direction, through the thick stuff. He was a big boddied deer with eight points, I watched him ease back down then continue to travel my direction (no concealment) I couldn't move or I'd be busted.
guess I had buck fever and was waiting on that perfect shot - when he cleared the big tree his head dropped almost to the ground and those big black eyes bore in to me for a second - then BAM! he was gone. Didn't wind me, didn't hear me, didn't see me till that moment of truth - what a rush ;D. I did draw on him but didn't let fly  - would have prolly only wounded him. Next time!!

First morning of the season for me....warm, muggy and foggy when I left home. Wasn't so bad once I got in my stand as it seemed a little cooler, though no breeze blowing.
I didn't see anything other than squirrels but did keep hearing a turkey gobble. Pretty sure it was a jake trying to get the hang of it as it wasn't a complete gobble- sorta squeak, then partial gobble, like a teenager whose voice is changing. Couple of hens yelping a bit too, trying to get the flock together I suppose.
May not go back out this afternoon as it's supposed to be upper 80s....never know I might change my mind. Ain't particularly enjoyable when it's that hot !!

I heard a turkey gobbling yesterday morning too. I thought that was strange, never hear one gobble in the fall. I didnt make it out this morning, had to take the wife to the airport. I'm going to head out here in a bit though and fight the heat and skeeters..... :P

I went out this morning.Hot and drizzling rain, and left my Thermacell at home :( Didn't see any deer.Did have 7 big gobblers fly down about a hundred yards in front of the blind.I think I educated them last Sat,as they weren't having any part of the decoys today. They hung up about 50yds and wouldn't come any closer. We have a Tropical low moving in so I guess the rain will not quit, but I'm heading back out in the morning.See if the 8 point and spike and does come back that I saw last weekend and no decoy's for the turkeys this time.

i went out this morning. it was HOT.  I saw one walking in but it was WAY before legal light time. Other than that we saw nothing.  MY big brother nailed a coyote.  It was pouring blood. it was hard to track in mud and wet grass. we finally got on the trail we found pools of blood and pices of organs it threw up something to. coyotes are one tough animal.  we traked it into the woods for a long time but we didnt recover the animal. it was thick underbrush so we were probably within 20 yards of the coyote and didnt know it.   if it was a deer we would of kept on looking but it was a coyote and the landowen and us dont like them. but they are one beautiful animal.

...................................David, Ya need ta find the animals yer wound , period. Dont matter whether its a deer or coyote or what. Personal likes and dislikes have nothing ta do with it and the landowner has nothing ta do with it. You owe it to the animal, beautiful er not in yer eyes. It shows respect fer the animal and yourself. Ifn ya dont know how ta track an animal learn BEFORE you go out next time and wound or kill something......bob

Any thought's on tracking? I was wondering about that the other day - I have followed sign to a dead animal before, and a lot of that was knowing what direction they were headed (which helps a lot), and blood. But what if thier is no blood, what do ya look for - other than tracks, broken twigs, bent over foliage, and what not?
Suppose you could do the ever broadening circle thing till you find it or don't - what works for everyone?
Title: Re: Deer hunting update.
Post by: mullet on October 06, 2007, 11:09:31 pm
I caught some flak on PP for the  three hogs that we didn't recover.I pride myself on good blood trailing and tracking. We were trying to blood trail in rain coming straight down and crawling along hog trails in thorn and palmetto thickets. In those kind of conditions I try to find an established trail that the animal seems to want to be on.Then I try to leap ahead after dropping a piece of toliet paper at the last blood spot so I have a reference point.I always carry paper with me so when the blood trail gets weak .Then I drop a small piece at every spot so I can get a pattern. The time Chris and I were hunting,we had to push them fast and not give them a chance to lay down,as the rain was washing the blood away. And with one,as soon as it bit the arrow off,The fat closed the hole and the blood trail quit.Normally,if I had time,I would put a dog on it.

Tryin' ya best is all that anyone can do . Some foks are better at this than others. Ya need ta know the difference between deer an hawg tracks here down south as well as others canine, etc. Givin' up because ya tired and dont like the animal bothers me. Too bad dont shoot next time. Huntin' is NOT killin' they are too different things. This is a public forum and hunters dont need this nor is it indictative of the large majority  of traditional hunters. That being said, I blood trail. Ifn theres is no blood I use tracks. Palmetto thickets, thorn bushes, sometimes rattlers, heat and bugs are part of it. Smell plays a big part fer me. Have tracked fer 4 hours many times in the past. I dont give up until I cant see in the dark. In am it starts over until I find the animal er figure I have exhausted all possibilities. Many times I have started over from the shot site and did it again and again. Fortunately most times I have been rewarded. I dont care ifn its hot, rainy , buggy er whatever. Ifn ya kill it ya gonna eat it end of story. Think about that before ya shoot.....bob

I agree with Bob.You have to do everything possible to find your game.Nothing worse than some hiker finding it at the picnic table with your arrow stuck in it.Unfortunatly on pay hunts ,when your time is up,it's up.

Sounds like I need to come huntin with ya Eddie - crawlin around in tha mud, searchin fer tha animals. Right up my alley ;D.
I'm with ya Bob - don't kill unless your gonna eat it, or it's a pest on the farm (so's ta speak). I saw a show one time on these guys in Africa (native people's) that used little bitty poision arras - they'd stick a big ole Kudu or something and trail it fer days (till it died) then take home the rewards. Wish I could track like that!

I saw a small doe tonight couldnt get a shot at her, and not sure I would have anyways she was pretty small. Another hunter(compounder) who hunts the same farm as me hit a big 8 pointer tonight and couldnt find it.  :-\ I helped him look for several hours and it only bled for like 30 yards after he shot it and we lost the blood in the hemlock needles.  :P He was going to go back in the morning to look some more, I dont think it was a very good hit, the deer will probally survive it I hope. :(

Turns out he did have a descent hit on that deer. He went back this morning and found it near the creek a couple hundred yards away. He hit it kinda high just barely caught the top of the lungs and had no exit hole, the arrow stayed in the deer the whole time. It didnt bleed hardley at all with the high enterance wound. I went over to the property where he shot him this afternoon to move my stand and decided to look to see where he found him.(the gut pile) To my suprize I walked up on a large (4 or 500 pound) black bear feeding on the fresh gut pile. Good thing he found that deer when he did or the bear would have eatin it all up! :o

Yes and no. Legally, yes I can hunt them here, but bear season is only three days long here, and the land owner were I've been seeing them won't let me shoot them. He thinks there his pets, they come eat out of his bird feeders all the time. Two years ago on the same piece of land I had one try to crawl up the tree with me.....lol. I had to tell him Get! :o

I hear you guys on the heat Here in the U.P. its been in the high 70's with 100% humidity, rain and fog miserable hunting weather.
The deer have their winter coats and just aren't moving much, it would be like me going jogging with a parka on. Good news the heats supposed to
break tommow highs in the 50's. Went to spend the weekend at my brother-in-laws he has forty acres mostly pasture but a nice strip of woods and its in farm country.
Didn't hunt the first night because of a thunderstorm, went sneaking in the morning down a 4 wheeler trai he has in the woods. Well I'm sneaking and hear a deer coming towards me down the trail so I freeze and get ready and this little nubber comes around the corner looking sad as all hell, its only about 10' from me when it realizes I'm there. you should have seen his paniced look and then he decides to run and it was like he coundn't figure which way to go it was hilarious I laughed so hard I almost pissed myself ;D Didn't hunt that night had to visit family and the next morning was so foggy ya couldn't see 10'. Probably won't go until tommow when the heat breaks. Working 10 day shift so will only be able to hunt nights. I agree with bob if ya shoot it every effort needs to be expended to find the animal even if by the time you find it the meats no good or coyotes been at it you might be able to salvage some tendons or bones. It why I generally won't hunt in the rain washes the blood and sign away. Good hunting guys.

Didn't see crap today. It was another recorder breaker today's high was 88 degree's!  :P Nothing like siting in your stand sweating your a$$ off. :P My brother missed a doe tonight, guess it was to close cause he shot right over her back. lol. :D He also saw a big bear tonight, I cant believe how many bears are around here now. A few years ago we had none in this part of the state, now it seems like there going to be more bears than deer.

Well. I got busted by ... FLIES!! >:(  Sittin there in a ground blind all still and everything and then these flies start in.  Now, they could land on my shirt, pants shoes, whatever... but no, they have to land on my nose, around my eyes, anywhere that will make me twitch.  Then I hear what sounds like a stomp.  Slowly turn my head and, yep, a doe staring at me trying to get me to move... again.  She saw me twitch. :-\  She was like 5 yards from me with a friend maybe 3-3 yards from here.  I was here to get a doe and this one woulda gone right by me if the flies weren't around.  Oh well.
What do ya use for fly control that don't stink to high heaven?

Pretty much the same here. Too hot. Way too hot. Skeeters whining in my ears. Yellowjackets landing on my nose. Deer doing almost all their moving at night. Not many deer here anyway. We need some frost.

No bob its not about comfort, its my tracking skills that suck the rain will wash blood away and I don't want to lose a deer that way.

Finally got out here in the Hoosier state this past weekend. It was extremely hot (90's) in the afternoons and in the low 70's before sunrise. I'm not telling you guys anything you haven't already experienced from the sounds of it. Had deer around me but out of range Sat. AM. I'm chomping at the bit to harvest my first selfbow deer. Bypassed SAT PM and waited for SUN AM. I had five deer within 14-18 yards feeding on Bur oak acorns for about an hour but couldn't get a good clean shot on one of the adult does. Had an absolute blast. Good luck hunting to everyone and be safe!

There's a nice coolness to the air this morning. Wish I was in a stand right now and not at work! Might have to take a vacation day Friday and start the weekend off early.

Keith is off this week...he's a teacher and is off for falll break. He missed a doe yesterday afternoon...he said it was a perfect shot opportunity, he just wasn't focused. He ruffled some hair on the top of her back. I'm sure he's hunting this morning as well.  :)

I hunt with heavey arras so that even in the rain I have two holes to bleed from. Lots of people want speed, I want two holes, pass through. Want that exit hole to help with tracking. In rain I will start trailing right away so that I have something to see. Rain will make you quieter, more silent, just move slow and keep looking for that animal while looking for the blood. Have had to track in a snow storm befor and that was also tough. Would see a dimple in the snow and dig down to see if it was blood. Most times it was as I was also following the tracks. But there were an awful lot of track from other deer. Found it after about 4 hours. I have also tracked a deer for 4 or 5 hours and seen it get up and run away. Sometimes our shots are not killer and the animal lives.

Any story if its a good one.  ;D I'm Just trying to see what other hunters are experiencing around other parts of the world.
Its finally cooling off here too. A high in the 50's today but Rainy. I saw three does last night but couldn't get one close enough for a shot. Then I saw three deer this morning to but they were running circles around my stand. Two adult doe and a fawn. Seemed like the one doe was chasing the other doe with the fawn.  ::)

Deer 1 Dana 0, Went out last night blowing wind and rain so didn't sit the treestand, decide to still hunt up a oak ridge into the wind.
I had been at it an hour I found a nice big spruce tree so I about 10 yards off a trail so I took shelter under its branches to watch the
trail. Well after about 15 min along come a nice fat doe I gave her a little urp to stop her which she did gave me a nice broadside shot,
came to full draw released and witched my arrow sail a foot over her back ::) Needless to say she vacated the premises in a hurry.
First time I drew on a deer in 8 years and let me tell the excitement was back, adreline pumping heart beating like mad, haven't felt like
that since I shot my first deer 30 some years ago. What I did wrong is I shot at the deer, I didn't aim or pick a spot I just drew and released!
BTW it was one of bob's tonkin shafts and it flew real nice but that one is gone to the god of lost arras. Sorry bob.
Oh well their is always tonight ;D

Hunted yesterday afternoon for a few hours. My buddy put me in a white oak (that's dropping acorns) overlooking a big field.
Just before dark a couple of beagles ran through and when the deer came out into the field they were spooked. Right at dark one of the deer came to the tree but too late. If she had been there ten minutes earlier I'd have had a shot.

Well before the deer showed up a hawk landed up in that tree about 12 feet from me. Apparently didn't like the look of me and took off soon after.

I have had the same problem with dogs this year, but I plan on remedying that this
weekend,Wonder how dog meat taste. >:D ;)I have no problem with hunting dog
that get out or away from there owner or even yard dogs that come through on occasion but when they are there every day I have a big problem. :)I usually give yard dogs 1 reprieve
if they have a collar after that they are fair game.Tn. has a leash law so the owner should keep
them at home.City folks by a 5 acre piece of land out here in the country and the first thing they do is buy a horse and 2 or 3 big dogs, they say I brought them to the country where they have room to run.I tell them ,do you want a bunch of dogs running through your yard, this is my yard onlybigger. Now I will get off my soap box it is just one of my pet peeves. :) And by the way
ant seeing many deer ,better weather now so maybe I will have a hunting story after the weekend. :)

Yesterday afternoon when I got home there were 11 turkeys in my back yard. So I slowly opened my truck door and stalked quietly into my basement to get my bow, and quietly stalked back out onto my driveway careful to keep cover (my truck) between me and where the turkeys last were. Slowly with arrow on string and bow at ready I eased around the corner of my cover only to see that the turkeys had fed out of range. ;D  ;)

I got out late after work tonight, and decided to try a spot that I hunted last year, but didnt look so hot this year. Anyways its close to the road and I didnt have much time, so I sliped in quietly(it rained all day and just cleared off) hung my climber on a tree and settled in. To my suprise I saw a deer moving down below me right away, couldnt tell what it was(buck or doe) just could see movement. Then about 15 minutes later a doe came running down the hill, but got down wind of me and kinda spooked. Of course I forgot my grunter because I was in a hurry so I had no way to try to call to them....lol. Then right at dark another deer came down the hill from behind me and stood there until pitch dark and then walked through 15 yards away but it was so dark I couldnt even see it just heared it. lol.... ::)

Went out yesterday, the weather finely cooled off.Went in about 3 and ran a couple of deer
out when I went in and figured I had messed the day up.It was so nice I decided to just set anyway.Nothing much was going on till around 6.I hit my bleat call about twice and all of the
sudden deer came running into my area from everywhere,The calls don't work all the time but I have never seen it hurt so I use them from time to time. This time it worked. They were all doe
7 in all so after they settled down I picked the biggest and took the shot.I don't always hit right where I look but this time I did.She was down in 40 yards.I checked when I dressed her and
hit the right lobe then through the heart and out in the left lobe low.The arrow didn't shoot all
the way through but it went in to the fletching. She broke the broad head and about 14 in.of arrow off when she took off on the other side.It was a 107 lb. doe.I took it with Twin Sister1.
Now sister 2 turn in the woods. :)

Finally cooling down here too. Supposed to frost tonight. This week is muzzleloader season here, no bowhunting, so I'm gonna take the smokepole out tomorrow morning. Not many deer here, and a disease has been going through them this summer killing a lot of the herd, not too optimistic about this season.

Congrats Mark! ;)

Took off from work today and went hunting! This morning I carried my climbing stand into an area of woods that I've been wanting to check out. Spooked some deer going in prior to finding a tree to climb. I saw several turkeys after daylight and one deer running 80-100 yards away. Found out later that Keith had taken a shot at it. We scouted during the middle of the day looking for acorns and found very few. One tree had some fresh feeding sign under it, but not a lot of acorns on the ground. I'll probably hunt it in the morning as it was the best sign I saw.

This afternoon I decided to hunt the foodplot behind my house. About 30 minutes before dark, a really nice 8-pt came walking and feeding down the roadway leading into the plot. He got to where my trail I cut from my back yard to my stand crosses the roadway, and he turned and headed up the trail toward my backyard. I didn't expect that! He got within 25 yards or so of my back yard, and turned around and came back down to the roadway. He continued walking in the original direction he had been traveling, and never dropped down into the plot where I could get a shot at him. He got within 20 yards at the closest point, but was behind me with branches between us, and I wasn't going to chance a poor shot at him. I enjoyed watching him, and plan to reposition my stand. He never knew I was there, so maybe there will be another time... :)

Timing is eveything!! :(

Had made a hook that would hold my bow on my lap so I didn't have to have a hand on it all the time.   Figured it needed a little adjustment... don't get ahead of me now!! ;D

The 2 minutes I messed with it, a nice 1 1/2 year old buck had gotten to within 15 yards and was watching me make my new invention perfect.

Oh well it will be ready for the next one!! 8)

Just getting back to my truck from a quick check of the trail on the other side of the road I look up the road to see a doe crossing the road. I snuck up there- didn't have my bow (illegal to shoot from/ near the roadway, blah, blah) to discover there's two of 'em feeding on acorns under a big oak. They let me sneak along until I crouched to get a better look, then they took off...not much chance of a stalk of those deer as it's THICK in the direction they were headed.

Had a close encounter with a spike buck this afternoon (but won't elaborate, unless I kill one  :-\ )

Then 30 minutes before dark I hear two or three deer feeding in front of me but only clearly see one. Surprising how thick the foliage still is, though I reckon it's to be expected since it's been hot up 'til now.

Walking back to my truck I jumped several turkeys from different trees. Seemed to be 8 or 10 but may have jumped a couple of them more than once.

Yes, today was an exciting day..well, this afternoon was!

Ran one out going in and didn't see anything else but squirrel's.Always a good hunt to me if I can see deer and really good if I have a close encounter. :)

Beautiful weather yesterday, had to work but finally made it out around 5PM, seeing as it was late start I decided to sit in a portable
blind I have setup overlooking a trail. About 6PM I saw a big deer thru the brush after watching it for a few minutes I gave a few bleats,
his head swung around and I saw a rack to far away in brush to count points but it was a big un. I gave a few more bleats but nothing doing.
He finally ambled off. Around 30 min later here he is again but only 20 yards out this time, now I could see the rack high, wide 8 or ten pointer,
He knew something was up kept staring at my blind, this went on for about 20 mins, when he turned his head away I grunted softly a few times, I didn't have a call
just my throat. well that got his attention. He started to move in a circle so I gave him a couple more urrrppps, He was coming now I got ready for the shot at about 12yds, then he just hung up wouldn't take the last 2 steps to enter my shooting lane. Finally he just turned and walked away, didn't snort or flag just strolled.
I think his sixth sense saved him, talk about nerve wracking man I am so pumped, the area I'm in has low deer numbers and no crops makes for some tough huntin.
Oh well, maybe next time eh! IMO these deer are well into the pre-rut already and their on the look out for the first hot doe, or a fight, this bucks neck was swollen
and he looked like he was ready to fight or #$*^ ;D ;D ;D

Hey guys!

NY's season just opened this past Saturday.  The weather finally cooled down into the mid 50's during the day and 40's at night.  Week before the season it was in the mid 80's.  Our leaves are a week behind peak colors and the canopy is very full.  Visibility is minimal.  The first deer of the season that I saw was a 140 class monster.  He winded me at 60yds.  I had 2 does come in last night and were interested in my decoy, but hung up 10 yds out of range in the thick brush.  I tell you those new photo realistic decoys are awesome.  I was watching a trail behind me yesterday, I turned around and was given a start when there was a deer (decoy) 15 yds from me.  I almost shot the decoy on a reflex!

Dave R has seen does, but no shots.  Haven't heard from Chuck or John.  A few of us are making plans again this year to come to LBL at Christmas.  My wife insists I go because I was a pain last year when I stayed home.

I'll be out tonight after work.

I sat for 3.5 hrs after work.  I heard the farmer was chopping corn once I got into the stand.  GREAT!  Nothing came around all night except for a squirrel that I did manage to cut a few hairs off of his tail.

Pappy ,

Don't worry John won't be coming this year The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Southerns has filed a restraining order to keep him out of states further south then PA.  He decided to use his vacation time to hunt the PA gun season this year.

Hey Glenn, nice to hear from ya.
I saw a sow and three cubs night before last. Our bear population seems to be exploding hear in Erie county. Ive seen almost as many bears this year as deer.
I could have shot a small buck last night. I was hunting on the ground and he came in about ten yards broad side, but it was to dark to see if he was legal (4 on one side), and its still kinda early in the season to shoot a small one anyways. I was actually hoping it was a doe. Exciting anyways, I love getting that close on the ground. :)

I saw a doe and a fawn last night, could have hammered the fawn but didnt feel like it. Them big doe sure are smart, seems like they have a sixth scence or something she just hung out for like a hour just out of range in the brush acting like she knew some thing wasnt quite right. :P They never spooked but she just wouldnt give me the shot I needed. :-\ Oh well thats huntin. :)

I had 3 bucks come in the other morning....5 minutes after it started pouring rain. I couldn't to risk a shot.

Last night, I hunted a spot that I just put a stand in 2 days ago. A young 6 point came in behind me and caught me off guard. I slowly stood up and as I pushed my seat back it squeaked. He went on alert and walked around me. He stopped broadside at 15 yards, and I tried a shot. As I knew would happen, he ducked the arrow...

I watched 2 little bucks sparring the other morning at 45 yards, and I had a monster come by my stand last week before it was light enough to ethically shoot due to overcast. I could just make out his silouette and those big, shiny horns....

I have seen more bucks so far this year than all of last year, and I am having a big old time!!---without the work of gutting or dragging!!!

I am really bummed out about this. Was out back in the lower 40, (two acers in back of the house) and in my ground blind. Two does came out to feed at about 5:45. That is about 1 hr and 30 min before total darkness. Well the smaller one was  in at about 15 yards and I popped up and took an instinctive  broadside shot. I thought it looked like a good hit, little low, but there. She jumped and did a 180 and went down toward the creek. I waited about 20 min. and went to get my arrow. The tip was missing a very small piece of it and there was a very small amount of blood on the white cock feather.  I looked for blood and found a small amount and trailed it for about 40 yards and it stopped. I did a search pattern all the way down the hill, about 100 yards, and could not find any trace of the deer. I retraced my steps and did another search and keep it up with lights till 9:10 pm. Of course it rained last night and we have not had rain in over 10 months. Well me and the boys, my two dogs went out this morning and looked for another 3 1/2 hours. No luck. All I can guess is the hit was not fatal and hope she is not laying out there some where. I sure do not want to come across her in a few months as a carcass. This is the first deer in 50 years of hunting I could not recover. I am bummed out.  :'( There are plenty of deer here and I have a lot of time to get some, but ----------------!!!!!!!!!!

Dick if you did your best to recover the deer that is all anyone can expect.
Bound to happen sooner or later, sad when it does though.
If she is lying dead somewhere she will feed the birds and beasts so not a complete waste.

Well DanaM, I'm with you on that but it is still hard. The photo shows the two Does. The one furthest away is the one I shot at. The blind is between the two trees with the netting. It's 6:45am and I guess the boys and I will give it another try. I will do a little still hunting. The ground is very quiet right now. Maybe if we find her I can still save the hide and feet if she is out there. I was so looking forward to those steaks etc. Well there is always tonight and tomorrow morning. Got permission, he actually begged me to hunt the area, to get a few off of his property. Nice area and great for bows. Lot of hard wood and wide open. Next shot I will aim a "little" higher.  ;)

The deer moved earlier than expected tonight.... 'round 4:45 had a spike and a button buck come down the river bank on the opposite side from me, just behind my stand. They drank from the river and acted as if they'd cross 60 yards upriver from me but next thing I knew they were back on the sandbar across the river.
Just after those two disappeared three does (two mature and this years) came through in front of me, close enough to shoot but moving along a little too quickly. I whistled  and saw the lead deer stop but didn't have a shot as she was behind some branches. Still pretty darned exciting !!

There was about a 20" wide 8 pointer making a scrape in the old womans yard across the road from where I park my truck when Im hunting. He just stood there and went on about his business like we couldnt see him....neet. 8)

Had a good weekend,no deer but several close encounters.Shot right under a spike buck Friday evening and to add insult to the miss he ran over my arrow as he left and broke it.Had a nice little 6 point come in Sat. morning to about 15 yards but he was facing me,when he turned broad side I had the sun at my back and he was right in the sun spot and my shadow was also in it so I couldn't move.He finely turned and walked away just like he came in.I had a good friend hunt with
me Sat. and Sunday and he killed a big doe Sunday morning, wasn't with a self bow but was with a re curve. It was his first Trad. kill and only the second deer with a bow so he was excited and I
was to for him.Youth hunt this coming weekend so we can't hunt, guess I will do some scouting. :)

I had a very exciting weekend starting out Friday evening, but ended with some bad luck like what Dick experienced unfortunately. After work Friday afternoon, I hunted behind my house and saw the first sign of some rut activity. Two does and a fawn were being chased by what looked like a 6 point. Later saw a spike, none of them got within range. Saturday morning I hunted over at a Keiths farm, I passed up about a 12 yard shot at a 4 point. I've been seeing some larger bucks, and decided to hold off on him since I've already got a couple in the freezer. Got into the woods kind of late Saturday evening, but went behind my house and used a climber instead of getting in my lock-on stand. Had some excitement early on with our cat chasing a dozen or so turkeys in my back yard, they sure can make some racket. Then saw a couple of does just off my property, they never came into range. The next deer I saw was a 8 point buck about 50 yards in front of me. I watched him make a scrape, pee in it and mess around with the low hanging branch above the scrape. He then walked with his tail extended directly under my lock-on stand and into my food plot. He ate oats for a while, and I saw him get alert and then ran and chased some deer out of the plot that I hadn't seen. These deer ran up into my back yard, I could see them walking around in the yard. Then the buck came back and really started putting on a show. He horned and fought a small diameter tree that had partially broke off at the base and was laying on the ground. He at one point had the branches of the tree in his antlers and reared up on his hind legs snorting and twisting his head. I had never seen anything quite like it in real life. He then made a couple of more scrapes, I could see him digging up buck oats and rape and flinging it behind him while making the scrape. He then passed back under my lock-on and headed up toward me through the woods. He came out on the trail that I have winter wheat on, and started eating about 12 yards away. There was several branches in the way, and I had to watch him for several minutes. I could hear his teeth grinding he was so close. It was getting fairly dark, but I could still easily make out his full body. He turned and took a couple of steps giving me a broadside open shot. I took the shot but was unable to see my arrow in flight or where I hit. I was concentrating on a behind the shoulder shot. He took off down toward my lockon and beyond into the bottom and across a spring. I waited about 15 minutes before getting down, and then took my stand off the tree and up into my yard before looking for blood. I found my arrow broken off about 10 yards or so down his trail. I only had 3-4" of penetration... :(  I was pretty sure then that I had hit him in the shoulder, and hadn't gotten but little penetration.

I couldn't find any blood at all on the ground, and tracked him about 100 yards by his tracks into the bottom. I decided to back off of him and come back later. After about 1-1/2 hours I went looking again, making a long sweep in the direction he had run, and never did find any blood at all other then the one small spot on the end of my broken arrow. I looked all through the bottom and up into a thicket that night, and went back looking Sunday morning. I never found any blood at all even from trying to follow his tracks as far as I could and closely examining the ground. I hated to lose him, but I know it happens. Hopefully he will survive the shot...

Exciting story Greg but you need to work on the ending some more ;) Sorry to hear about your bad luck, he will probably live if hit in the shoulder I hope.
Deer are tough critters. Going out after work tonite, I have a feeling its going to be a good nite. Cold front moving in, overcast with a stiff breeze.
I think the temperature change is going to liven things up ;D 68 yesterday and 50 as of now and most likely will be in low 40's after work.

Best of luck to you! I like to tell my hunting buddies to..."shoot straight through both lungs!". I wish I could have followed my own advice Saturday, really hated putting a bad hit on him! I was mentally talking to myself leading up to the shot, and thought I was on target, must have hit slightly right of where I wanted too.

Crap, that sucks Greg.  :(  Maybe you just nicked him....did you find the whole arrow or is part still in the deer?
Deer activity here is almost 100% nocturnal now after this stinkin early muzzle loader season....Can't wait for the rut to start.

Ryan, I found all of the fletching end of the arrow except for 3-4". There was a spot of blood on the broken very end of the arrow, that is the ONLY blood I ever found. With a forecast of rain all week, and our state gun youth hunt this coming weekend, looks like probably next week before I'll get to hunt again. The bucks are definitely showing signs of beginning rut here. :)

I screwed up on a doe this morning. It rained all day yesterday and all last night, so the leaves where super quiet. Any ways I decided to try out my bleet call about 8:00 this morning and when I did I heard something behind me spook. lol. There was a doe and fawn comming down then trail right behind my stand about 15 yards and they heard me call  and took off. They did eventual pass by me but just out of shooting range..... :-\ Oh well at least I broke my dry spell. :) I hadnt seen a deer on stand in three or 4 days....

Had  a good after noon ,seen 7 deer all does,I got to the tree at around 3 pm and the wind was out of the n/w at about 20 to 30 and no rain.I figured I could handle the wind so I got set up.Well about 4 the rain came in in waves. After about 30 min. of that I decided to go home.I got out of the stand and was easing along the edge of a cut corn field and up ahead I saw 2 doe feeding along the edge so I backed into the thicket and got set up .It took them about 30 min. to feed close to me,I thought the wind had settled down I guess because I was backed in between some heavy cover. One of the doe was I guess 18/20 yards  broad side so I took the shot. When the arrow hit open air it flew like an arrow dose without a point.Miss by feet,it was wild as a bat.I
missed so far it didn't even spook her.I waited till they feed on and slipped out. When I got to the truck the wind had settled and the rain had almost stopped so I decided to ease over to another stand I had about 45 min. of light left so no sooner than I got in the stand had 2 small doe come
into the food plot,I let them go[maybe another day] and didn't see anything else.Needless to say when I got home Joanie thinks I am crazy and she is probably right I was chilled to the bone, don't know what I will do when it really gets cold. All in all it was a good evening [Now looking back]
Didn't seem that good while it was happening. ;) ;D

Good afternoon hunt I'd say Pappy! I was cleaning up over at my mothers house yesterday across town from where I live. We have 12 acres of mostly field behind her house. Everytime I looked back in the field there were several deer feeding. Maybe I should give it a try before we sell it...took my first deer with a bow back there I think 27 years ago. :)

hey guys! wednesday night i went out to the stand and had a quiet evening till bout 6ish. footsteps were coming in behind me but i couldnt turn or she would have busted me. then i see a skipper come from across the street. the made there way to my stand but at 30 yards must have cought my scent and she blew at me 8 times! she bounded of a ways and then stopped. so i fugured it wouldnt do any hurt to flif over my can call and to my surprise, she was headed straight at me. she had me tied in a pretzel trying to guess what side of the tree to get ready to aim at. i must have positioned back and forth the maple 5 times!! by the time she was 20 yards, she was behind a brush pile. the skipper was standing right under the tree! at this point three other deer had made there way in but i was focusing on this big doe. all of a sudden, she let her gaurd down, walked around the brush pile and at 10 yards, she put her front foot foreward and streched looking back over herself. perfect! i drew and released my rivercane arrow. smack! she ran off crashing and then it was silent. i waited a while before i climbed down and then i went to the house to put my bow away and grab a better flashlite. i went to were i hit her and found a big clump of dark hair. no blood. i followd the tracks to were i heard he crash and found a little blood. so i backed out and waited till morning. for you guys who leave deer overnight you must get as little sleep as i did. 7a.m. in the morn i found my arrow, it pulled outhe other side apparently while she was booking it through the woods. completely drenched in blood! i was pretty excited. then i found a few leaves completely puddled with blood but as i followed i found less and less blood. 40 yards from the arrow there was no blood at all. my dad and i searched for 5 hours without coming across blood or finding my deer. i let my neighbors know about it so they could keep an eye and ear out for vultures and coyotes. i have been completely bumbed out for the last couple of days and feel like crap. the shot was perfect looking so im completely stumped. i listened from the porch last night for coyotes but there was nothing. i feel really bad but i looked Everywher for her. the coyotes will eventually find her and i hope i hear them so i can find were she ended up. at least then ill know were she ran to. -whitewood

i met with failure also white wood.  i shot a spike last night at twelve yards, and the arrow went right behind the shoulder, about four inches back, centered up and down.  believe it or not, the arrow BOUNCED off!   i am shopoting a dag gone 65 lb bow.  the arrow bounced off!  stone point, that was pretty dang sharp, must have hit a rib, and caught the arrow in the worst possible wobble it has ever done.  they shoot good - i have no ide what happened.  did not even draw blood.  he stuckl around for about 30 minutes after.  no wound no blood started feeding after about 15 minutes out in the field.  i have no idea.  i am going to the store for some steel broadheads.  they fly nicer for me anyway

I missed a doe this morning, it was just getting light and 4 doe came right under my tree. I should have just waited and seen what happened but no I just had to shoot.....the arrow went right under her and took a little white hair off, she then proceeded to run and snap off my arrow which was sticking out of the ground.  >:( Dang it you'd think I'd know better by now, you cant force a shot!  :P Well it was a good morning out in the woods anyways, I ended up seeing 5 does and a small buck all before 8:00am :)

i went out last night and had anonthe quiet evening except for the two or three racoon running around under my stand. then all of a sudden, the stopped and ran off. i looked up and saw a doe and two skippers walking straight to me at a steady pace. i had already been standing up because of the coons racket i figured they were deer at first. kinda weird they were playing around i always thought they came out after dark? anyways, the two little ones were side by side with the doe behind them as the crept in by me. i let them pass by a little waiting for a quartering away shot. i wanted to shoot the doe but the 2nd little one gave me the best shot. as i slowly raised my bow and bent my knees(to keep the top limb of my bow from hitting a branch i kept for cover) i drew and released. its pretty awesome to wathc an arrow find its mark. the deer high tailed it for about 40 yards and i heard it crash. i waited a good half hour and was confident with the shot so i climbed down. actually i almost fell down i was shaking so hard. i stayed nice and calm the whole time but as soon as i released that arrow i got the crazy shakes. i think both because it was cold and i had blocking it out with all the adrenaline and the actual excitement from the hunt. when i got to where i hit the deer (a mere 10 yards from the base of my tree, there was no blood or hair. this made me very nervous and brought back the bad memories from the deer i couldnt find earlier in the week. with no blood i then started questioning myself of my what looked to be perfect shot. i headed to where i last saw it and out of no whete there was a awesome blood trail. the kind of blood trail you hope to find on any game. sure enough there was my deer maybe 50 yards from were i shot it. the little bugger never even know what hit him. i cant even explain the excitement i felt when i was holding my primitivly killed deer. i didnt weigh him this morning but im guessing he weight about 80 pounds. im 6'3 and weigh 250 if that makes it look any bigger. im not a trophy hunter i hunt for meat and this will be very good eating. im plannin on having tenderloin for supper!!! yeah baby!

The deer are really starting to move with this weather change,I saw 13 yesterday, bumped 4 on the way in along with 8 Turkey and seen 9 more from the stand. They were all does as far as I could tell.I haven't seen a good buck so far this year but the way the does are moving it is just a mater of time, now seeing them and getting a shot is 2 different thing but you never know.
Just need to spend as much time in the Woods this time of year as you can.You can go from

I decided to try something different yesterday and it was a hoot.I set up behind the house
where I have been seeing a good buck the last few days.No buck but at about 6pm I had a big doe and button buck come in,I wasn't planning on shooting them so I just set still. The button
just feed around in front of me at about 10 yards as did the doe. After a few minuets the big
doe seen something she didn't like and came right in on me looking, she was no more than 3 yards
facing me and I just set still she looked for a minute and went back to feeding. It was so cool.I had on a sent loc leafy suite  and the wind was out of the west so she didn't smell me.They
finely feed on off,no buck yesterday but I may give it another try today. The wind is supposed to be from the N/W today so that should also be good.I haven't hunted there in years or on the ground in years at least not on purpose so it was fun for a change.I thought I would give the farm a break from the kids last weekend and get ready for next week.I am off all week so I will stay there wit 3 buddies from Ohio. :)

Went yesterday afternoon, and saw the same two does and a fawn as Wednesday. This time I was in the right stand though. I shot at the doe without a fawn at about 12 yards or so. I don't know if I shot high or the doe ducked, but I ended up cutting her across the top of the back. A second arrow at 18 yards fared no better, she ducked and I only had some hair on the shaft. Agony of defeat!

My bow is making a sound like the shaft slapping up against the handle, but I can't see how...I've got a piece of leather that the arrow should be against during the shot.

i picked up a new property last week. scouted it this morning. didnt have the slips signed yet so i left the bow in the truck and just scouted it. stalked over a rise and saw a nice 6 pointer. decided to stalk closer to see what i could see. got within 20yards of the bugger and he started walking to me. took my knife off my hip incase he got to close. he was so close i thought about sticking him if he came closer cause i figured he would of kicked the crap out of me if he realised i was there.  ;D

I hunted Saturday morning and passed up about a 10 yard shot at a spike. Went over to the club after hunting Saturday morning with a hornbeam stave in hand. Laid the bow out and roughed it in with bandsaw. Saturday evening back home hunting behind my house was uneventful...no sightings. Laid in Sunday morning, then went back to the club. Got the hornbeam bow thinned down and Pappy and I put it on a form to reflex and remove some minor propellor. Pappy was tillering on another osage bow, he was past brace with it. I laid out another bow from the remnants of the hornbeam stave I had which was a good size one. Used Pappy's dimensions he wanted, and then roughed it in and gave it to him. He's never made a hornbeam, always gave the staves away before he had a chance. I told him I wanted him to finish this one. It should make a good bow...the tree was cut in May of 2005. :)

Seen a nice 8 pointer tonight but he winded me about 30 yards out.....then later I saw 2 spikes and several does all running around like mad, no shot opportunity but it was fun!  ;D

Killed a smaller 8 pointer this morning, there was a larger one with him but I couldnt get a clear shot at him. We got our first snow of the year last night and today and these deer were both chasing a hot doe. He not huge but probally one of the nicer bucks Ive killed with a bow and only my second buck with a selfbow. I will post a picture here in a minute...still got skin him and get him hanging.

Thanks guys. ;D I'd say he's a 2 1/2 year old deer, weighed about 150 pounds Field dressed thats pretty common around here. The bigest buck that Ive killed up here weighed about 200 pounds field dressed. Now he was a big deer. I shot him with my 50 cal flintlock a few years ago. ;D

That is a big bodied deer. 150# field dressed is a big deer for us.      I've hardly hunted and only seen a doe and 2 fawns early this season. I'm heading out Thursday am for my club in GA. The rut ought to be close. We'll see.      Pat

Outstanding Ryan! I'm really glad you got one! Looks like a good buck to me, I'd definitely have flung an arrow at him if given the opportunity. How long of a shot, and were you on the ground or from a stand? ;)
Title: Re: Deer hunting update.
Post by: Ryano on November 07, 2007, 06:19:56 pm
Greg, I shot him at about 8 yards slightly quarting towards me. The arrow went clean threw him and stuck in the dirt on the other side. The arrow entered perfectly behind his right shoulder and came out just behing the last rib on the other side. I got both lungs the diaphram and liver, he only went about 30 yards. It always amazes me how deadly a good sharp broad head is when its put in the right spot.

Im not saying its not a nice buck (you cant eat the horns anyways) but Ive been seeing much bigger ones, I just didnt have the will power to pass him up with only 4 more days of archery left here and I can hardley bare the thought of dawning the high powered rifle anymore.... :-\

I was able to sit my stand for about the last 1-1/2 hours of day light yesterday afternoon. Had three does come in straight down wind of me, and although they never spooked and got within about 15 yards, I didn't try drawing the bow and risking a shot on very alert deer. A little while after they left, I saw a doe and two fawns enter my food plot about 60 yards or so from where I was. I had to wait until well after dark to get down because they wouldn't leave. :)

hey nice buck you shot ryan! a short track is the best aint it?!  are you allowed more than one deer in PA? i remember my uncle and some friends used to drive down to PA because they were allowed to shoot like 5 deer with a rifle? is it split up into different zones in the state? any ways good luck to the rest of ya! i havnt been back out with the bow since i scored on my little button buck. i can still get another one with my bow and one with my muzzleloader. for archery, you can actually buy as many tags as you want in the expanded archery zones in maine! one of the zones is practicly across the street for me! its 12$ for a doe and 35$ for a buck. i got home from up north yesterday from deer camp. i was still hunting in the rain walking the edge of a swamp when something stood up about 100 yards away and walked up the bank. i thought it was a cow moose because of the size and of course with fogged up scope and glasses i couldnt see the head but then it flipped its tail back and forth and i saw a white butt then in two bounds it was gone. that deer was well over 250 and if it hadnt been for seeing the white on its tail and butt id have believed it was a moose. if i could have seen clearly through my glasses, i probably would have seen that monster buck and could have had an easy shot at him. i guess if i hadnt gone out in the rain i wouldnt have seen him at all. next year i already have my spot picked out for that area! theres so much woods in northern maine its hard to find were the deer stay. good luck every body!

Jesse, one buck per year through out the entire state. Doe tags very from management unit to management unit. They are all by drawing. In my unit your lucky to get one doe tag. Pennsylvania is different from any other state, it has more hunters than deer.

Had a great week and seen a lot of deer. My buddies that was in from Ohio missed 6 shots
4 by one and 2 by the other.Seen 2 nice buck Sat. evening and thought I was going to get a shot at a big 10 point ,had him clear at 28 steps but that is a little much for me.He just wouldn't come any closer.Did take a doe so the week was fine.Had good weather and the rut just seems to come and go around here.Nice buck Ryan and beautiful picture with the snow.Grant[castIron] took a 6 point and even tho it was with a custom long bow I thought it would be ok here. ;) The muzzler loader season was open so there were some nice buck taken around here.

Well the week is over and Steve (Hillbilly) and his buddy J.T. are home, back in western NC. I had invited them up here because they lost their area to hunt in down the road a bit from me. Too close to civilization etc. I have a selection (That means a ton) of deer that come thru here and did not pressure them for a week till they came.  It was M.L. season, (OK, OK its not with a bow), starting on the 3ed of Nov. and they scouted and set up their stands and started hunting on the 5th. All told they got 4 deer, two apeice. One 4 point, one button and two Doe. I was real glad they could do it. I will give the deer a week or so to calm down and then go out with the long bow and see what is up. Steve probably could have gotton one with the bow because at one point he said there were so many deer below him he could not figure out which one to shoot. I do believe the deer did not know they were in the area because they kept comming in on the virtual same pattern. Below is a selection of photos of what kept comming in at all hours of the day and night. The area is directly in back of my house and the food plot is clover and some soy bean. I feed them a lot of corn also. We "do not" hunt this area but put the stands up a ways away. There is a passel of trails comming thru the south portion of the property, about 300 yards away,  and that is where the guys got them.

Hunted only behind my house this weekend. Even though I can get into the stand really quietly, I think they've scented me to often over the last couple of weeks.  Only saw two does across the hollow Saturday morning, and nothing during the evening hunt. I don't know where the deer are likely to come from, and also the wind changes so much it is hard to try and hunt the wind.

Well no deer this year, but on this past Monday morning I had one of the biggest whitetail bucks 4x5 standing about 40 yards from me for about 40 seconds. I couldn't draw back the string without scaring him off. Boy how fast my heart got going for that brief time. I saw him again the next morning, good hunting, just no meat in the freezer. I'm waiting for a friend to call so I can go help him cut up his elk.

Good job guys.  The weather here in Oklahoma has been goofy.  Record high Tuesday of 82 degrees.  The temperature dropped that evening and fell over 40 degrees with 25 mph winds.  Today I don't think it got above 40.

I've hunted pretty hard this week both from the ground and from a stand and got flagged by a nice buck on the way to one of the trees.  Everything else I've seen have been does and none offered any kind of shot.

I'm going to try again in the morning while my wife joins in the shopping frenzy to save 50% on foot bath/massager  ::)  Geeezz, who want to get up at 0400 and sit out in the cold, unless it's for deer  ;D.

Happy Thanksgiving.

Nice deer.I had a good week.Started the week off with a 89 lb doe and seen a lot of deer through
the week, can't seem to get close enough to anything with horns.Seen 3 good bucks but they
had other ideas.Miss another big doe Friday .The rut is winding down here so the bucks will
probably be a little harder to see at least for a few weeks till the second rut comes in.I have high hopes for that.I have seen more young deer this year than I ever remember. :)This was with
my Black Locust bow ,The shot was a little far back but it shot through and she only went about 150 yards so not sure what but got something good.GregB helped track her. :)

Last day of rifle season here, bow reopens on Dec 1st, Have a cold spell going, highs maybe to 20 degrees,
Have a couple inches of snow in my hunting area now. Went out this morning with the rifle but only saw does, no doe tag in this area.
Hope the cold holds for a bit the swamp will freeze up and make getting around much easier.

Went out for a quick hunt after work Friday, and had two does show up. I waited 15-20 minutes with the smaller doe in front of me hoping the larger doe would come in range. Finally approaching darkness forced the issue and I shot the smaller doe. She still probably would dress out between 85-90 lbs. It was a sharp angling away shot, arrow entered just behind the last rib and lodged in the opposite shoulder. Very little blood,... couldn't find any that evening. Went back and found the doe the next day. She had traveled just over 100 yards.  :)

Well I guess I got skunked this year.  I was hunting cow elk not deer.  I saw plenty of huge bulls, but no cows.  I was headed out today and tomarrow for the end of the hunt but we got hit by a huge winter storm.  The canyon I go up was flooded out and the road washed away and the entire area has flash flood warnings/alerts.  The snow and mud was almost impassible before, but with all this and expecting another 2-3 feet of snow today and Saturday, so I think Ill stay home this time.  I don't really want to get stranded 30 miles from the nearest plowed road with temps expected to be in the teens.  Call me a sissy if you like, but I don't like the cold that much.  ;D Justin

Well, my season is probably over for 2007 without a kill.  :'( I only saw one deer this weekend and it was Sunday morning. I was in a ladder stand on the edge of one of our food plots and had "Flossy" the decoy out. A nub buck came out with the sun and when he saw Flossy he bowed up. ;D He would put his head down to eat a little but raise it quickly, always looking at Flossy. He moved along the edge of the food plot , eating as he went but he kept looking at her. When he got to where he was looking end on at the decoy she disappeared to him and he relaxed and eat comfortably until he walked out of site.  It was very interesting and humorous to see his reactions to Flossy the 2d decoy.
Another unsuccessful season for me. :( I only saw 2 deer while on stand this year. Opening weekend I had a doe fawn walk out and present me with 5 or 6 shot opportunities but she was too small and quite scrawny. For my last sit I was entertained by the button buck yesterday. I invited a friend to hunt with us this past weekend and he took a nice 90# doe. Eric gave me a backstrap so I have some meat.
THAT'S HUNTIN'!!!      Pat

You are right Pat that is why they call it hunting not killing. We still have about a month
left in our season but it really gets tough this time of year,no cover and the deer have been hunted hard all around my place, but I still have high hopes of maybe one more shot.We are
going to L.B.L.the week after Christmas where I meet Gary Davis and several guys from N.Y.
to hunt and camp for a week.It is tough hunting but the fellowship is great and that is
what matters to me most of all. :) Pat you should try and make it down to Tn. next year before they get all stirred up and hunt with us for a few days.I would love to have you. :)Good luck
to all.Shoot straight. :)

Just got home last night from a four day business trip...saw lots of dead deer along the interstate and a few live ones. Hope to hunt some this weekend weather permitting. Finished my hornbeam bow before I left, but havn't had a chance to shoot it much yet. May try and hunt with it some over Christmas vacation. :)

Was gonna post pics and a pretty good story---BUT--all three deer I've killed this season were with my 4-lam osage longbow---didn't want to offend anyone here by  posting a bow I didn't make myself----one of my friends made it for me. Thought I'd be up front-------if you want to see them I'll post them later.     Glenn.

Keith took a young buck last evening...I hunted behind my house and didn't see any. Sunday evening a saw one small buck about 80 yards away while hunting behind my house. I think he spoted me, even though the only movement I could have made was rotating my head. I was down wind of him...

Ok, here we go. Oct.29th I killed this nice fat 6 pointer from one of my favorite ladder stands in a honeysuckle thicket. The shot was 21 feet and the deer didn't travel far. Nov. 2nd I took this doe from the same stand only quartering away and at 18 feet, short recovery again. You cant see the bow very well, its a 4-lam osage longbow made by my friend Chuck Jones in Vandalia. He used to make these custom bows as a hobby until recently--couple years ago he bought and operates 'Black Rhino' specilaizing in youth, womens bows up to 40#.  My bow is 59#@28" and I had him build me one 75#@29"

I also included one of my stands I've killed several deer from--I love hunting with osage bows, love hunting osage thickets, but especially like osage tree stands----check out the hedge tree that my stand is in.

Nov. 12th I grabbed the rattling horns and went stillhunting---was slowly sneaking through this old hedge fence line (behind me) that seperates pasture from corn field. Got closer to a another pocket of timber and rattled aggressively. layed my horns down and grabbed my bow. Here comes this 8 pointer running down through the hedges towards me. I lean in tight against one of the trunks and when his head goes behind a tree I raise my bow and hit full draw. He comes running out from the other side though not quite as fast and I 'm focusing on his shoulder---he's looking my way--all of a sudden I see my arrow bury into the shoulder right where I'm looking. He breaks to the right, runs into the corn field 50 yards and turnd aroung----going what happened? His legs buckle and down he goes. I can't believe it, who was that guy that shot that deer---It was wierd like I watched the whole thing from farther back. I look at where my buck was standing--I take 5 regular steps--he was closer than 15 feet. This is the first deer I've taken from the ground--I know he isn't huge but I'm absolutely tickled with this hunt.ONLY allowed 2 bucks in Illinois so I'm gonna finish out the season with my selfbow (Jan.17)

Well done!!! I would have a hard time concentrating on deer hunting from your stands though, I'd be siting there wondering which tree I was gonna make a bow from next instead of keeping my eyes peeled for deer.

Haven't been out for a while but got out tonight.  What a nice hunt!!

About 10 inches of snow on the ground and snowed the whole time I hunted.  Saw a couple deer but too far and didn't come my way.

Had maybe 25 turkeys filter by me on there way to roost but not close enough.  Had one within 30 yards but didn't have bow in hand when I saw it.  Too far anyway!!  Able to get bow in hand and draw on bird at 45 yards just to see if I could!!

Had a single bird out in field and he seeemed like he was hunting for the rest so made a few sounds on call and he came running.  Thought I was in for some action but he took a left turn before he got to me and went where the others had gone.

It was a great night!!! ;D

Well there is one more weekend here in Tn. so if it is going to happen again it better hurry up. It is pretty tough hunting here this time of year. The cover is all gone and the deer have been chased around for 3 months but you never know.I plan to get after them one more time then it is back to the shop and start thinking about the past season and of course next year.Good luck to all. :)

Well I closed my season yesterday with some excitement. The morning hunt I had three does in front of me at about 25 yards. The wind was swirling and they had gotten a scent of me but they couldn't figure out where I was. I kept hoping they would drop down the ridge into range, but finally my hunting partner ended the situation when he came walking up from behind me and spooked them off.

The afternoon hunt was even better and turned out to be one of the most exciting hunts of the season even though it ended with a missed shot. About an hour before dark I spot two or three deer running about hundred yards away through the woods. I kept trying to see where they had run to, and finally zeroed in on some noise in that direction. It turned out to be two bucks sparring with each other. I could distinctly hear their racks hitting together. This went on for maybe 10 minutes when I saw a deer headed my way. It was a spike buck and there was a small six point following. Then the two larger bucks I had been watching also started heading my way behind the first two. I was hunting about fifty yards off a food plot with the hopes of catching deer milling around inside the woods waiting until dark to enter the food plot. It had been raining off and on during the afternoon and now it started raining again. The first two smaller bucks passed by me at around 18 to 20 yards, and I had my concentration on the two larger 8 points bringing up the rear.  One of them had probably around a 16" inside spread ivory rack with the other one slightly narrower yet taller dark rack. The two larger bucks got within 20 yards or so and looked like I could expect them to pass by broadside at around 15 yards. I was in my climbing stand about 18-20' off the ground. The lead buck passed through a narrow lane before I could get drawn. They had been feeding I hopedone would stop in an opening and give me a still shot. Suddenly the two bucks got alert and I could hear one of the smaller bucks stomping his hoof and I knew the smaller bucks had gotten down wind of me. I quickly checked out both larger bucks and saw they were both behind cover. The lead one and closest to me had an open lane just behind him and I knew he would pass through it, but hopefully it wouldn't be to quickly when he spooked. He turned to leave and I drew quickly lined up and let fly as he passed into the opening. I watched my arrow fly over his back and knew my season had just ended. ;) When I found my arrow, one of the feathers was laying on the ground next to the shaft. I don't know what happened for it to fall off and be laying where it was next to the arrow. Oh well, they will be even nicer bucks next year and maybe ours paths will cross again... :)

Dana, I was using the HHB bow that I had entered for the December competition...not the one entered for Jan. 08.

I ended the season with a 6pt, a spike, and a doe. We won't talk about the "missed" opportunities... ;D

Hunted this morning... probably the last time this season. Was hunting on the ground and enjoying myself.  Was about 40 yards from one of my tree stands.

Saw 3 deer walk under that stand and every one looked up at the stand just as if they were taught to look both directions before they crossed a street, they were also taught to look up at a tree stand before they went under it!! ;D

Hopefully we'll (or she'll) connect with something....

I went this evening and killed my first deer with a selfbow. I never had much trouble killing a deer with my other recurves and longbows but with my selfbow, man it's been tough! It seems like every time i've had deer in range they've always been facing me or some odd angle besides broadside. I've even had a few too close to shoot.
Since our rifle season has been over, i've had a lot of trouble just seeing deer, much less getting a shot. The one I got this evening was just a yearling doe but i'm just as proud of her as I would be a nice buck.  It was about a 10 yard shot through her liver and the back of her left lung. I waited 30 min. and checked the trail for about 10 yards. I had good blood right off so I kept following it and found her about 50 yards from where I shot her. ;D ;D ;D
I just started making bows this past spring and since then have made four bows from one particular log and 3 of them have taken a deer this fall.  That tree had some good mojo in it!  I'm sending wvflintknapper a stave from it, maybe it will be lucky for him too.
Our season is over next Monday and I still have one more doe tag so who knows, maybe i'll get lucky again. :)

Way to go Shannon. I've been hunting with my stuff for 3 years now and just haven't had a decent shot opportunity. I slung an arrow at a small doe last year but it was in frustration :-[ and she was too far out anyway.  >:D  Maybe next year will be my year.

Way to go Shannon, nothing like your first.Had the kids down this weekend the regular season is over here so we let the get after them. They took 2 does ,of course it was with guns but they are only 7-10 so that is fine with me.They had several more chances but just couldn't make it happen.
That is what the youth hunt is all about, teaching them what to do and not to do. :)Now back to
bow building. :)

Ok fellas, as requested here are some pictures. Now I don't want to hear anything about the milk stains around it's mouth ;D Everybody knows them little ones are harder to hit!  Really, I almost hit her too far back. The arrow went in high on her right side and came out about 4" farther forward and right on the edge of the white belly hair on the left side. If I had hit her any farthe back, I still would have found her, I would have just waited till the next day. As it was, she only went about 50 yards and was dead in minutes... Just the way I like it.
Pat, I know where you live, I have diehard bowhunting friends that live in Haywood and Buncomb Co. bowhunting them mountain is tough!!!  People go to Cades cove or up on Cataloochi and see all the deer and leave thinking that there's plenty of deer there. WRONG, one antlered buck per 6 square miles is pretty slim.  I envy the man that consistently kills any deer over there. Your time will come, and when it does, you will have definitely earned it!
