That looks like a fun one. Is that a yew tree growing in the background there? You should get it cut and split so it can start seasoning.  >:D

Keenan you sure have an eye for those character staves.  I will find one of those dreamy wavy yew trees one of these days.  That looks like a beauty.

 ;D ;D

Glad you like it Steve  ;)

Weylin that gave me an idea. Do you think they will allow a yew Christmass tree. You are allowed five Christmass tree permits per family. I could see the officers face already when I have a Christmass tree permit wrapped around a pole in the back of the truck >:D

Bryce we will have to get out for a gathering sometime

Roy,,,Roy,,, Roy ::)

Carson, thank yew ;D

That looks real nice Keenan. I like the way you and some of the others on here can handle the wavy, knarly pieces of wood and come out with a beautiful, functional bow. I'm watching and hopefully learning cause I have some staves like that begging to become bows
one day. ;D

Roller coaster for sure :o What is your method of  tillering such limbs? I usually use my thumb and index finger and run it down the limb feeling for a constant limb taper.  I know this is going to be a nice one! :D

Amen to that... all the measurements with vernier calipers can't beat your finger and thumb. (Cant pick your nose with verniers either ::))

Yep that is the best method.
Yep Del them verniers can really hurt up the nose, :o

good video Keenan.i was out on my stavemaster today chasing a ring on a osage stave.i am still loving the stavemaster.it really shines on the fine detail sanding.it's nice to be able to hold the wood in any position.being short or vertically challenged, other shave horses are just to long and i can't get enough pressure to hold the stave.i just have to lay one foot on the pedal of the stavemaster and the wood is held firmly.it helps my back out a bunch.thanks brother.

Here in the midwest out snake bows go back and forth, NOT up and down. You left coasters are just strange.

I like the image of hauling out Christmas trees that look like yew staves with a tuft of branches at the end.

Great video Keenan. Thats pretty much how I work character staves. Thats going to be a very nice bow I can tell now!!

Post by: Weylin on December 09, 2012, 11:17:03 pm
Looking good, Keenan. Loved your plug for the stavemaster there.  ;D It's the truth though. I was just helping a new bowyer today on his first bow and it is a wild and crazy yew stave. He had it clamped down to the table for a bit to do some rasping and sure enough he crushed a little dent into one of the protruding lumps. I put him back on the stavemaster after that.
Title: Re: Sneak peak of the "Sister" (Update)
Post by: Keenan on December 10, 2012, 11:18:09 am
Thanks guys, didn't want to make a commercial but did feel it necessary to point out that as soft as yew is you need to be a little more cautious with the back and sides and how you clamp or hold when scraping
Title: Re: Sneak peak of the "Sister" (Update)
Post by: Weylin on December 10, 2012, 11:28:59 am
I was just teasing you a little.  :P I didn't think you were making a commercial. The stave master is really good for that issue, and many others. My only complaint with my stavemaster is that sometimes I fall asleep in it while I'm deciding what to do next on my bow.
Title: Re: Sneak peak of the "Sister" (Update)
Post by: blackhawk on December 10, 2012, 11:36:39 am
All hail king Keenan upon his yew throne .....Long live the king  ;D

Nice teaser..and I'm sure it helps some folks as well, and that's applicable to all woods and bows...when someone shows me a bow the first thing I do is run my greasy fingers across it checking for tiller by guaging its thickness and side to side thickness...and most times you can tell if its tillered right by that test alone.

Thanks Guys.

Cody What I've noticed is it tends to be in the larger and older trees that are in good snow elevation. I think what happens is the small branches try to start growing and the snow pack and ice breaks them of each year when they are small twigs. You will often see 6-8 feet of branchless trunk  But not always the case I have cut some that was smooth and consistant and another 100 feet away that was roller a coaster surface

You did a nice job of working around those pin knots. That can be tricky work especially when they are as numerous as with your bow.

Steve, I'll let you do the final count. There are multiple pins in each cluster and about 14 small clusters.
 Thank you  Greg
 Thank you  Matt
 Thank you  Weylin
 Thank you  Jon
Thank you  Pat   as Steve said She is 58# @ 26  Guess why he knows this ;D
 Thank you  Kip
Thank you  John, and yes it's a bit cold out but after a couple weeks of mornings that were in the minus range. The recent warm-up to the twenties feels real nice. :o
Thank you  Hammer, get out this way and I would be happy to take you out for some wood.
 Thank you Bub
 Thank you Clint
Thank you Carson,  Sorry my friend, this one ships out in the morning for her new home in Ohio, so she won't be at the COBG
 Thank you Gordon

 Thanks again everyone,
Even though it was challenging this was a very fun build as it was made specifically for a guy with a great heart! I am continually impressed with the generosity of so many great people on this site. From rendezvous gatherings to trades done on the forum people are always stepping up to the plate to help any who need. One of those that top the list is Steve AKA (Seabass)  I have seen him go out of his way to find something for total strangers and give expecting nothing in return. I have heard of many speaking the same about him as well.

As some of you may have already figured out from the hints this one is for SEABASS. You certainly deserve it my friend

thank you for all the nice words guys.there are plenty of giving people on this site.i usually give things to people that i have seen being nice to others.one example is during the bow trade some people didn't recieve a bow.two people that i know of,stepped up to the plate and made bows for those that didn't recieve one.that was very generous of them,so i made them something for being so kind to others.i think that there is many generous people on here.this is what draws me here, the people.thank you all,you are a great bunch of folks.

Awesome job and gesture.  Steve is a class act for sure.  You did make it only 48" long didn't you?  So the bottom limb will not drag in the ground???

Dwardo, That was good! ;D

Got me thinking about how we learn from each other and how awesome it is to be able to share different ways of doing things.  I had to do some serious digging to see how this design came about and was enlightening to see the progression. Here were some of the first ventures into the developing of that wrap.

Weylin that gave me an idea. Do you think they will allow a yew Christmass tree. You are allowed five Christmass tree permits per family. I could see the officers face already when I have a Christmass tree permit wrapped around a pole in the back of the truck >:D

im curently making a bow from a christmas tree we had last year! and sadly it wasen't yew :-[ it's some kind of conifer but i think if it works it will have some good character in it.

Druid, You have no idea how humbling that is to hear coming from a guy who builds bows that I just droll over. Every one of your bows are works of art my friend.  I think your friends have seen some of the best Craftsmanship through your work. I would be honered to have you share the bow on your site.
