Title: TX Get-Together?
Post by: gstoneberg on January 25, 2013, 12:09:17 pm
Guys,

The landowner, Hugh, has put the property we held our 2 north Texas knapping get-togethers on up for sale.  It hasn't sold yet, but somebody was over when I was on my last deer hunt Saturday to look at it (for the 2nd time).  We could probably sneak in a get-together before it sells.

Or...

I also know a farmer down near Temple in Burlington.  I rifle hog hunt there a couple times a year with a group of guys and he lets us sleep in the volunteer fire department building for a donation to the fire department.  Good people!  It comes with a kitchen too.  They're also interested in flint knapping.  The last time I was there hog hunting I made a point I left with them.  There is a local chert there, light brown and very hard.  It heat treats to a much darker brown and gets a little easier to work.  I picked up a small bucket of it in the dirt road by the fire department.

Both of those properties are available for a Texas Knapp-In.  I personally think the Burlington location is more centrally located but I like both spots and they're each 3 hours from me so it doesn't matter to me.   I need to check with my social chairperson on dates, but I'd like to  hold the get-together in late February or early March.  If you have a preference on location or dates, please post it up.  Let me know if there are other knapp-ins to be sure not to collide with.

Of course, we could do one at each farm a couple months apart. :)  Looking forward to seeing y'all again.

George

Either location is good for me.

Sure liked that last years location...
But Temple would be Half the distance for me... :)

Either way I plan to come, good Lord willing and the Creek don't Rise.
Planning on bringing some Fresh Tuna this year...  :)

Hey Sasquatch,

If George holds a Knapp In in the Temple area that would be just around the corner from you in Colledge Station... :)

At the moment I'm living on the West side of Houston.
And though we haven't had a Houston Get Together in a while we have a few folks active in the Primitive Arts around town and we will
definitely have another Get Together Soon, Good Lord Willing. Here is a Thread about it:

I'm in Houston and new to the primitive archery world but eager to learn. Temple would be best for me and I would like to attend.

Well, Temple is a longer drive for me by about 2 hours but I don't care. ;D  Besides, Temple is smack dab inside some of the best flint country this side of the Mississippi.

I will be there, regardless of location.

The temple one would be a bit father drive for me considering i live about 20 miles from the one in cross plains.  Things are slow at work maybe I could make it this year.

Have we talked about times and dates yet?    I would love for it to be in Temple.

We haven't yet, but I am thinking that Temple (actually Burlington) is the right place for the knapp-in.  The reason I haven't chosen a date is that my hog hunting friends are also looking at dates for the next big hunt there and I've been distracted with that. I expect the hunt to be in the next 6 weeks.  I'm leaning towards going a little later with the knapp-in to try and hit nicer weather.  I'm open to suggestions though.

I'd like to make this one too guys and either place would suit me just fine. If there's rocks to be had at this Burlington location then all the better. Need more rocks like I need a hole in my head ::). Y'all just plan it up and I'll try to make it :).

Well, I haven't chimed in yet, because I wasn't sure if I was gonna be able to make it. However, my wife and I are talking about making a trip to TX land again over our spring break (first week of April.) Don't plan around me, but if it worked out I shore would like to meet up with y'all!

As far as I know, there's no issue waiting until April for the knapp-in.  If people wanted, I could host one at Cross Plains in Feb for those who could make it...and then we could meet again in early April in Temple.

Where do you intend to stay when you're down here?  We have plenty of space if you're going to spend any time in the Dallas area.

Hey Shaun, good to hear from you.  If you can't make the get-together but can get down to Dallas sometime let me know.  We can do a mini-knapp-in in the shop.  Tell Cody we're pulling for him and his team.

Everyone's invited!  Now I need to choose dates.  What I'm going to do is plan a Cross Plains date in Feb.  I need to get some fancy sensors off that lease for some mt. lion hunting I'm doing here by Dallas.  I'll also bring home a feeder and lots of other stuff.  O, and break some rock.  We'll try to set the Burlington (Temple) date in early April to let Scott join us from the frozen north.

I probably hog hunted not that far from you last night Knapper.  We were just a couple miles from the Red River on the Texas side NE of Paris.  4 of us got 3 hogs with ARs and night vision, 75-275lbs.

I'm doing my best to talk the wife into making this trip a reality. So far I think she's about 65% game. If we do go I'll probably just be able to hang out for a day, so what Im saying is dont make any special plans around me. I'll keep workin on her and wear her down hopefully!  ::)

OK guys, I've done a little more checking on dates in Burlington.  I've tentatively set the date for March 8-10.  We wouldn't be able to get started until late afternoon on the 8th and would need to be cleaned up around noon on Sunday.  I'm still waiting on the final commitment from the VFD, but thought I'd see if there were conflicts here while I could still make a date change with them if I had to.  I didn't see any other knapp-in conflicts in the little bit of googling I did, but could have missed something.  I'll check with the farmer there as to whether there would be a place we could look for flint on his land.  I will also bring my night vision hog gun if anybody wants to try that.  We might be able to rustle up some pork for Saturday's meal.  Of course, Gus brought enough food last year to feed twice as many people as we had.  Dang, that was good eats.

EDIT, sorry Knapper, I missed your post.  I haven't met a pig yet I haven't liked over a fire.  Come on down and join the fun.

Hope to see y'all soon.

Well shucks, there's nothing magic about that date.  The dates that are out from the VFD perspective are Mar 23-24 and Apr 13-14.  I can try for  Mar 15-16, Mar 29-30 or Apr 6-7 if that works better for everybody.  Of course, I'd have to check with my social chairperson as well.  Of course, the odds for hitting everybody's schedule are close to 0. ;)

Hey Sir,

I can make March 8-10.
Or possibly another date in March or Early April.
But we'll be prepping for "The Classic" in Mid to Late April so I'll be out for the second half of April.
Should I bring the Spud Guns to this one?

I'll be bringing Tuna for Burlington Knapp In...
Caught a few on a charter out of Venice, LA the end of 2012.
Here's a photo of the small one.

Yes Sir,

One of my favorite fish to Fight and Eat...
This one took about an hour and a half to get to the boat.
The bigger one took about two hours to land.

The real question will be whether to serve it Grilled it or Chicken Fried with Mashed Potatoes and Gravy...
It is Outstanding either way.  :)

In a situation like that, I usually recommend doing it both ways. :)  That way we can assist you in the decision of which way is better. ;D  Nice fish, pictures of the larger one??

I haven't asked the VFD yet, but could you guys (Gus, Knapper and Seider) make it on Mar 15-17?  Don, I'm assuming you can make either date and I think I can as well.  Hoping Patrick can make it too and I haven't talked to Paul yet.

I wonder if strips of wahoo skin taken high off the back would maintain that lovely striped pattern.  I know you would lose the gorgeous colors, but they could be reproduced with a little help from a taxidermist's airbrush work.

You are lucky I wasn't in that boat when the toony-fish were landed.  I'd been in there with a filet knife, chopsticks, pickled ginger and a dab of soysauce!  You'da lost about half that first fish before the deckhands clubbed me senseless!

I hear ha JW...

Normally I cut up the first Tuna that hits the deck for just such a purpose.
But in this case the Captain, "Brandon Ballay" kept me so busy on the fish we barely had time take a breather while icing the fish down.
If my buddy Vern hadn't had presence of mind to make sure his camera was charged up we wouldn't have had any photos to prove our boasts.
My camera died after the second photo.

Unfortunately the colors and patterns fade FAST on these fish.
Unless there is a way you could skin them immediately and put the skins into some sort of preservative that I don't know of...
They Grey out as soon as they die and hit the ice.

The colors Change and Brighten and Fade and Undulate on the fish as they Posture on the Attack.
They come in on the baits "All Lit Up" and "Aggressive"... P!ssed Off.  :)
Its a Joy to Behold.

A friend has video of a sailfish coming in to the bait.  Looks like a blue neon sign on the side of a torpedo at warp speed.  These fish use their color patterns to flash their moods and attitudes.  What beauties.  Thanks for sharing the pics Gus...wish I was there to get a seared tuna steak!

Wahoo, cut into steaks and grilled, is about as good as it gets.  That raw tuna doesn't appeal much to me.  Cook it up about any way and I'm all over it though.  Gus those are beauties.  I have got to come down and fish some time.  We talked last year but I just never got it done.  I did come down and shoot a small pig though.

OK guys, I just finalized the dates for us as March 15-17 at the VFD in Burlington, TX.  There's a decent sized parking area where a small trailer could be parked.  However, they will open the VFD meeting room to us and there are a few army cots there.  Last year the some of us slept on cots and some brought air mattresses and slept on the floor.  Plan on making a donation to the VFD for their hospitality and the utilities we use.  They're very nice people so I try to be very generous.  There is a small kitchen there, though I'd hate to see Gus not bring that awesome camp setup he has.  We'll need to bring a fire pit of some kind, as we're right at the edge of town and it is the fire department.  I believe Gene will have wood there, but I'll make sure of that as the time approaches.  If you have tarps we can use to contain most of the debitage like we did in Cross Plains, please bring them.  I'm sure there'll be more to talk about and get set up as the time approaches.

Hopefully we'll get some good weather.  I'm looking forward to seeing y'all again.

That's great David.  We'll talk more about it as the time approaches, but you need to cover what you will drink while you're there as well as a chair to sit in, flint if you have it, and of course knapping tools.  You'll need a sleeping bag and an air mattress, unless you're quick enough to snare one of the army cots, or like to sleep on the floor or in your vehicle.  If you or anybody else really wants to sleep right, there are a couple motels about 10 miles away in Cameron.  I've stayed there once.  Anybody who wants to cook is welcome, though I'm sure Gus is planning at least 1 tuna meal.  I cooked breakfast one day last year but I can't remember what I made, probably biscuits and gravy.  We'll plan out the food later.

I'm hoping somebody has one of those steel firepits we can use to have our campfire in.  The grandson of the couple who are hosting us will probably come and sit with us.  There's also a hog hunter from down there that will come and join us as well.  Should be a good time.

Ill be there, anybody want to trade stuff? I will bring some staves of ERC(clean) Elm wingged, Mescal Bean, and some cool petrified coral/agate?   I wont be able to respond much for the next week.  Ill be in hill country collecting supplies :).  There is no internet access there.  But i might be able to respond using iphone.  When it comes to food i have lots of cat fish, but with Gus's tuna that might be to much fish in one weekend.  I have some ground turkey meat, deer meat.  I could bring that.  Here is a pic of rock( it is knappable).

Not sure I'll be deep frying this trip.

I'm at CP now. There is a stainless pot here in the shed. If nobody claims it I'll take it home with me and bring it next weekend.

We're pulling feeders and blinds today. Sad times. I did a last hog hunt last night and killed a 205# black boar with the 6.8. Kept me up half the night.

As for trading, all I have is osage staves. I'm assuming we'll all bring flint if we have it.

See you next weekend.

OK Gus, I laughed a bunch over your pot.  There were 2 stainless pots out there I knew of and Johnny said they were his.  I went over to clean my knives and spotted a third stainless pot sitting by the water barrel we use to wash hands and dishes.  Opened it up and it still had the oil and leftover mix on the bottom from when you used it out there.  Amazingly, it was not spoiled or rancid and appeared to be good enough to use again. :o  I'll have it all cleaned up for you for next weekend.

Here are pictures of the boar:

That's my young friend Jayden behind the pig.  It should have had nice tusks, but had broken off both sides and one had grown back to about 1".  The whetters were nice.  205lbs on the hoof.

I'll probably take a half day off and try to get down there about 4-4:30pm.  When are you planning on coming?  Also, which meals do you need me to cover?  I need to go back through the thread and see how many we're looking at.  One of my internet friends from the hog forum who lives down there is planning on attending.  Also, I think the grandson of our hosts is planning on being there if he can.  I did hear from Paul and he can't make it.  I was hoping he'd be able to come.  Should be fun anyway.

I beat my favorite bopper to death and haven't replaced it yet. :( Should have ordered a new one yesterday but I forgot.  May give you a call later this week to finalize things.  Thanks for cooking.

Here's who I show coming so far:

Tower
Sasquatch
Knapper
Gus
Jackcrafty
and me.

Seider was thinking about it.  Paul told me he can't make it.

Anybody else?  Let me know so I can PM you a map.

EDIT: Also, do any of you that are coming have a metal fire ring, or one of the small fire pits we could use to have our campfire in?  Gene asked that we keep the fire in a ring or some other fire pit.

Thanks,
George

Whew George, that sounds like it was Tasty for Sure...  :)

I was thinking I might cover the two evening meals, Friday and Saturday.
At this point I'm thinking Venison Chili for Friday and Grilled/Fried Tuna for Saturday.
If that sounds good I'll whip up the Chili tomorrow so it'll have time to Rest before Friday.

Also, I have a mid size metal wash tub that I use for a fire pit that I can bring unless someone
has a Real Fire Pit.

Planning to head out of Houston Early Friday.
Can't wait to see this blasted city in my rear view.
But I don't have to hurry along the way...
Kinda like to do some wood hunting on the way up.
See if I can spot any Osage or Dogwood.   :)

Yes sir, those were tasty ribs.  Had the sweet italian sausage in spaghetti too.  Excellent!  I picked up some polish sausage seasoning and casings at lunchtime and will do some of that too.

Sounds good.  I'll cover the 2 breakfasts for sure.  Does anybody have anything they'd like to have us cook for lunch on Saturday?

Good idea on the tub.  If somebody has a real fire pit that'd be even better.

If you leave early Friday you'll beat me there by 4 or 5 hours.  I'll have to let Gene and Ellen know you'll be early.  How much osage do you want?  Maybe I could be convinced to drive the pickup down and bring you a load.  Most of what we cut together last year is still sitting unsplit in my driveway.  You might as well have it.  I can extract some future favor from you.  >:D  And, Thomas has another straight osage tree he wants taken off his place.  Does anybody else want osage?

Heck George, I'd be happy with any Osage you'd be willing to bring down to Burlington.
And more than happy to come cut Future Osage with you...
 :)

And I don't have to get there early... Really.
Was thinking to do some Wood Scouting on my way up...
Thinking the Dogwoods should be blooming right about now...
Might run across a place to cut some shafts or staves...

Also bringing my Trade Bow stave for viewing and discussion/guidance.
And an Osage Molly I'm working on/shooting in.

I'll be coming in the pickup.  So, I should be able to get quite a bit of osage in the bed.  Too bad they aren't even making the beds 6' long anymore.  What a pain for hauling bow wood??!!  Anyway, leave some room to haul wood back.  Thomas said we could cut wood any time we wanted, I just need to let him know in advance so let me know when you feel like cutting.  We could even do it on an evening after work now that the time has changed.

As far as when you get there, I'll call you when I get enroute.  Then you'll know about when I'm going to arrive.

Hope you can make it seider, but I'll understand if you can't.

Does anybody have any good Georgetown?  I don't know what I have to trade for it, osage for sure, but other than that I'll have to work on it.  A friend is looking for some.

Only a couple days left.  I'm starting to get excited.  Will be good to see friends I haven't seen in awhile...and make new ones.  I talked to Gene and Ellen today and they're planning on us.  I have an internet friend from the hog forum that's interested in knapping who is going to join us there.  Should be a lot of fun.

I wish I could have mad it but the airospace industry is pretty demanding.. When the goverment wants something you stay at work and make it.. I have been working from 7am to 7pm to try and finish up some things I was going to leave work at noon on sat and head that way with my boy he is 5 and loves to play with flint and chase rocks. But I ended up having to work late did not get off work until 9pm.  Maybe one of these days i can make it and meet everyone face to face..

I wish you could have made it too.  We did have a good time and once again, Gus' cooking was wonderful.  That grilled tuna was awesome.  The fresh boar loin was great too, I'm eating leftovers of it as I type.  I'm sorry I didn't make more of the hog hunting before you got there Gus, I wasn't sure we'd have time to do it.  I was wrong on that.  How bout some pictures?

To help you put faces with their handles, starting front left and going clockwise, I am first, then Sasquatch, then Knapper and back left is Knapper's friend Alan; back right is Tower and Gus is front right. We're in about the only shade available as the trees still didn't have their leaves.  Man did I get sunburned!   Many rocks were harmed in the making of the next picture. ;)   A couple more points were finished after that picture was taken.  Knapper has one and the other is out in my truck, I'll get a picture of it later.  Don will chuckle when he sees how small a knife point I got out of that big tab he let me reduce to rubble.

A pig did meet an unfortunate end on Friday night, becoming the main course for dinner Saturday night.  He was a big old ugly boar, the only pig knapper and I saw while we were out.  I got video of the shot and if anybody's interested I'll post a link to it once I've condensed it.  It'll be short.

I had a great time and I thought  Gene and Ellen were great hosts.  They ate with us Saturday night as did a friend of mine and his wife from the hog forum who lives down there.  Hope to do it again.

It was a great time, wish y'all had been there.

I had a riot too.  And, you are so welcome my friend.  If you get a chance, post a picture of that little point.  It isn't particularly good knapping, but it is some of the prettiest stone I've ever seen.  I think the guys would like to see that snake you found...or at least the skin from it.

I have the truck unloaded and things are going back to normal.  Sure was nice to spend a couple days away doing one of the things I love. :)  I did get a picture of the knife blade.  It should have been 2" longer, but while it was still a rock I broke a couple inches off it. :-[

Hope to haft it to a chunk of cholla and the Christian Care Center will auction it off next month.  I hope it helps them.  I should notch it but I'm too chicken...

Well, Mary and I had leftover tuna tonight for supper and it was still awesome.  Tomorrow for lunch I'll finish up the boar loin.

I think it's fair to say that there was a lot of broken rock at all of our feet my friend. I kept repeating "Until it's a point, it's just a rock."  I learned that from Tower and repeat it often.  It's OK to break a rock...thank goodness.

I do hope you're able to get to a knapp-in.  I learn so much watching other people work stone.

looks like I missed this one. Maybe on the next one.....

I'm in the Austin area and willing to get together if anyone is interested. I have some material that I can bring, but I think it may need to be heat treated, which I'm not familiar with at this point. I'm very much a beginner at knapping and have a big pile of rocks at this time and not much finished work to brag about.

Don, I just wish you'd have had a little more time.  We'll do it again for sure and everybody is always welcome.  The Klein's enjoyed having everybody there.

Tim, if I'd have known...I was back down there this past Saturday again and broke up a bunch of rock.  Only finished 2 points, both from heat treated stone I picked up in the yard there in front of the fire station.  Here's the better one.

Sadly, somebody came by and stepped on the point when I had it beside me on the ground and broke off an ear. :'(  I remade the base into a pedernales and gave it to Miss Ellen.  The other point wasn't as good, a simple stemmed point, that I didn't get a picture of.  Then I had a nice big point going from a thin perd spall until I broke the tip off it...twice.  And finally, I broke a beautiful piece of Burlington up, but not before I ran a shard of it into my pointer finger about a quarter inch deep.  Could not stop the bleeding for a long time.  I quit after that.  So, it was a tough day of knapping.   It would have been better with some company.  The hog hunting was terrible too.  The cold north wind really messed us up.  Still, better than working... :)

Title: Re: TX Get-Together?
Post by: gstoneberg on March 25, 2013, 09:07:46 pm
Thanks you guys.  I would have too Scott, it was pretty stone.  It had a huge turtleback on one side.  When I tried to get a little aggressive with the indirect, I blew out a semicircle of stone instead of driving longer flakes.  The Burlington just won't take what I tried to do.  It happened twice.  If I hadn't stabbed my finger and bled so much I'd have finished it into something, but I was going to lose a lot of length bringing the base up to where I could knock that high spot off.  I really need to stop with the indirect and move to the ishi on that Burlington earlier.

Howdy Leslie, good to hear from you again.  I like to see the pro's in action too.  I've been taking a break as well, but it was nice to get back at it.

I'm off to go smoke the last of the bacon meat.

Dang it George I feel your pain...

When I shot that flake into my wrist last weekend I pulled out the obvious piece of rock at the time then CA glued it closed.
Last Tuesday I peeled the glue off to give it a good cleaning and found that the Dark spot that I thought was dried blood was a second flake that was buried
below the first flake I pulled out at Burlington...  ::)

With a little touch up I think I'll be able to haft this flake and hunt with it in the Fall...   8)

Already looking forward to next Get Together!  :)

hollar at me next time you're in the area and hopefully I'll be able to break away for a bit. I forgot to mention that aside from my pile of broken rocks, I have a nice bruise on my leg to show for my efforts. haven't had any quarter inch deep cuts yet but I'd almost welcome one for a really nice finished point.  ;D

i have to get some better tools i think also. i'm wondering if that's not the reason most of my stuff is not working out very well.

nice looking point you turned out there!

what kind of material is that and what area where you hog hunting? i need to sit with some folks and take some notes.

I'm going to resurrect this old thread as I have some bad news.  Those of you that were there should remember Miss Ellen (as she liked to be called) and her husband Gene that were our hosts.  She passed away the day before yesterday.  I received word on Friday that she was in the hospital with stage 4 lung cancer and she passed Saturday morning before I could get down and see her one last time.  I'm sure this is weighing hard on Gene.  They're good people.  The funeral is this Wed afternoon and I plan to drive down for it.  If you think of it, send up a prayer for Gene and the family.

Thanks,
George
