I was tired of paying 35$ for PO arrows that lack the duribility that I need. I mean I am not that great of a shot. I saw George's pine arrow link on his website. I took his advice. Straight grain white pine boards from Lowes 6$ and it yeilded 15 1/2x1/2 in blanks. I ran them through the Veratos dowell cutter. with alittle tapering and some sanding i now have 40-50 arrows. They are 3/8 in and spine from 40-60 #. I found that the pine with more rings/inch would spine higher. I had to taper them so they would fit the 11/32 points and nocks. The cresting paint is Testers and the orange is some engine spray paint. I cut the feathers with a feather chopper. I really liked the process, and the price is right. Enjoy

Just in case you cant turn your head :D

Wow! nice set of arrows! great job on them!
-
A little work and you can get some excellent results!
I'm sure even with your "labor costs" you came out way ahead!
-
They look nice. I am curious, how does their durability compare to POC?
-
Thanks Guys. I think that they are more durable. I always hit the steel post in my 3D deer target leg. The PO break all the time. I haven't had one pine break yet. But let me do more research this is the first set.
-
Nice arrows.Where did you get your dowel cutter at.
Rob
-
Veritos tools they are like 30$.
-
I was checking out those cutters , do you cut them by hand or drill ?
-
A drill is needed. I have one of the veritas dowel cutters; they work well and created a lot of "pencil" shavings. My suggestion is to wear a mask during production. The dust created by cutting the blanks, as well as when you make the blanks into dowels, is enough to chock a cow!
One question for you Sasquatch. How did you taper the shafts? I'm very interested to find out how you tapered them, especially since I need to make a set of arrows myself. Would you consider doing a build along?
-
Nice.
I like them. I use a scroll saw to cut 1/2 inch pine boards into 1/2x1/2 blanks... but my arrows do not look that good.
-
I use a vacuum set up above the cutter . No mess. I catch the arrow at the outfeed with fine sandpaper .Two birds with one stone.
-
Very nice ..............One of these days I'm going to invest in a dowel cutter. What is your thoughts on the Veritas? Pros and Cons.
Thanks

I like it. Cheap, quick, easy, small and easy to store, what's not to like? The initial set up took a little tweaking ,but once that was done, on problems. Works well on hardwoods as well. Good way to use up the off cuts from cabinetmaking.
-
Thanks for all the great comments! I really like the dowel cutter. Muffin man, I simply used a hand plane and role it as I plane. Then sand the shaft. Thanks for looking

That one is a couple hundred bucks Tom - Sasquatch, you said you got yours for $30 - is that the "Veritas Dowel and Tenon Cutter"?
-
no, the one pictured is 30$
if you only get one of them. its not a tenon cutter either. the picture of the dowel cutter should be exactly as shown. but they do offer a package at the top of the list for around 120 or something.
-
If you really wanted to get into it in a big way, you could buy the one with changeable bushings for a few hundred. They have specific inserts for 11/32" 23/64" and 5/16" .It would take a lot of arrows to pay for that one! around 10-12 dozen I figure. Even I don't loose that many arrows ;)
-
I just recently bought the one with changable bushings and got the 11/32 adapter. For the 11/32 bushing and the main veritas it will run about 250.00, I have not had the chance to use it but I build alot of arrows and just got tired of spending 35+ dollars for arrows. I will let you all know how it works! :)

Cool that sounds great, keep us updated. 8)

Man Sasquatch you took all the good boards from our lowes. Now how am I supposed to try and make some? :P

Brilliant arrows! Very pretty. I would shed tears of blood if I lost or broke one of those!
-
Great craftsmanship! These look factory made. You must have a very steady hand to do the paint like that.
-
Those are some sweet looking arrows. Great job and thanks for the info on the cutter.
-
Sasquatch . Maybe you said and I mist it but do know how they [pine] came out for weight before paint and fletching?
I may have to get a Veritas tools and give it a go.
-
Here's a link to a great video showing how to make tapered shafts and make the jig to do it. I would modify it a bit by adding a bottom channel to the jig and hooking the shop vac to the end to suck the dust through the holes and away from the shaft and paper. It's on my to do list it just hasn't gotten to the top yet.

Thanks every body. i have made more arrows since then. Don the fine ring boards, will yield 45-60lbs. and the wide ring boards will yield less on average 40-50
-
Sqwatch , dont listen to jason,, hes just jealous he didnt get to Lowes first!
-
Sasquatch . Sorry to take so long to get back to you. Thank you.
